When former transplant surgeon Paolo Macchiarini first implanted a synthetic trachea into a patient more than a decade ago, it was hailed as a breakthrough. But the person he operated on died, as did subsequent patients. NBC producer Benita Alexander was working on a story for a 2 hour television special focused on regenerative medicine. The subject of her documentary was the world renowned, yet controversial super surgeon, Paolo Macchiarini. Dr. Macchiarini was making waves in the medical world with his 3D printed tracheas and he'd already had a couple transplants under his belt. When Benita met Paolo for their first interview, sparks flew and Benita soon finds herself crossing professional lines. As the relationship progresses Benita learns that not everything is as it seems. These revelations won't just affect her, but countless patients and their families as well. Ten years ago, the Italian surgeon Paolo Machiarini's ground-breaking surgery, transplanting the world's first synthetic windpipe won him praise and fame around the world. But it all went terribly wrong. This week, he went on trial for aggravated assault, with the prosecutor arguing that what he did was not healthcare, not research, but experiments on humans, without ethical clearance. Macchiarini himself denies any wrongdoing, his lawyer says he was trying to save people's lives. We also hear about the new Ukrainian news service at Radio Sweden, police reaction to the Easter riots, and a longer interview with the Nobel Prize laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah. The famous star surgeon Paolo Macchiarini was recruited to Karolinska hospital and institute in 2010.  He had successfully performed transplantations of tracheas from dead donors to living patients and his method was going to revolutionize the medical field.
