In 2016, Marc Lafleur started truLOCAL, a subscription business allowing people to buy locally-raised meats online. To ignite sales, Lafleur and his co-founder pitched the company on the popular Canadian TV show Dragon's Den (similar to Shark Tank). The presentation was a hit as they received an investment of $100,000 from Dragon's, Michele Romanow and Joe Mimran for 10% of the business. As a result of their new partners and the free marketing that came from the show, revenues soared. By 2020 truLOCAL had reached sales of eight figures when Lafleur began receiving interest from acquirers. A few months later, the company was acquired by EMERGE in a deal valued at $16.8 million.

This week we have a recharged episode for you because we’re in the process of recording season 7 So for this week, we have recharged an episode from Season 5. In this episode I sit down with Marc LaFleur who is the co-founder of TruLocal, a subscription service that delivers high quality frozen meats to your doorstep. I decided to recharge this episode because just a few weeks ago, truLOCAL was acquired by a company called EMERGE for over 16 million dollars. What a milestone! Here’s a comment from Newswire, made by the Founder and CEO of EMERGE. "In truLOCAL, we have acquired a profitable market leader in the lucrative food tech space that happens to be one of the fastest growing companies in Canada," (Source) Rest assured, the founding team as well as Marc seem to be staying in place so not much will shift from an outsider's perspective. Dave and I have a truLOCAL box shipped to our home each 6 weeks, for the past 3 years, and we’ve been blown away by the quality and customer service since day one. Congrats Marc and congrats truLOCAL team, you deserve all the success. Let’s get into my chat, recorded back in April of 2020, with Marc LaFleur. Today on the program, a conversation with an entrepreneur i've known for a while now, truLOCAL Co-Founder and CEO Marc Lafleur. truLOCAL is a sustainable monthly meat subscription service operating across Canada. I got introduced to the company when I was. 14 years old, at a truLOCAL popup booth at a random Lululemon in Toronto. 4 years later, truLOCAL is very much a success story; the company employs over 30 people from coast to coast and was recently named number 14 out of 100 of Canada's Top 100 Businesses by The Globe And Mail. From a booth in Lululemon to the cover of The Globe And Mail's Report On Business, Marc's story is inspiring and his insights are thoughtful. As a result, Marc, based in Waterloo, Ontario, joined this program via Zoom to discuss his origin story, the subscription food wars and, of course, how to build a company that ranks number 14 out of 100 of Canada's Top 100 Businesses. This conversation was recorded on October 22nd, 2020, thanks for listening!
Marc Lafleur, CEO of TruLocal, works really hard. He doesn't apologize for the sweat that's needed to be a first-time founder, but that doesn't mean he's a fan of the #hustleculture that's big in the startup community. In this episode, he shares with Sarah how his goal of improving the food supply in Canada through his quality meat-delivery company doesn't leave time for much else, and why he still thinks its worth it.

Marc Lafleur was just featured on the cover of The Report on Business this month and we couldn't be happier for him. We brought him back for another chat on The Your Life! Your Terms! TruLocal is a consumer platform that started four years ago. Their main objective is to get consumers consuming value-added meat, meaning meat that's 100 percent grass fed, pasture raised, and most importantly locally sourced. That means there are strict criteria for farmers and suppliers wanting to join the network. Marc unpacks what the expectations are for everyone joining the marketplace.COVID-19 has changes this, but TruLocal is fortunate to be positioned as a DTC brand doing almost all of their business online. They also have the ability to fill boxes in closed-off fulfillment centres. Because operations continue, they've been able to hire as many people as possible. Pricing is always an interesting conversation. With a lot of brands cutting, slashing, and offering discounts, Marc shares his approach and plan with truLOCAL. He also shares his approach to expanding his business. Not just new products, but also his approach to moving into new territories. You might not know this, but Marc started in door-to-door sales. He opens up about his journey to founder of this fast-growing business operating in multiple countries. To learn more about truLOCAL, go to trulocal.ca. This is the DTC Growth Show by #paid.

There’s a word everyone uses when they talk about a great entrepreneur. The thing that helps them pull through the long days, the rejection and self-doubt. The thing that keeps them going when others might give up. That word is “hustle,” and for Marc Lafleur, it’s a way of life. Marc joins us in studio to share how he made the leap from hustling for a company to hustling for himself. He gives advice you can use to build your dream career, no matter what it is. Mentioned in this episode: Beyond the Bulletin Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/beyond-the-bulletin

I’ve also created a link and have put in the show notes. Here is the link to join: http://www.sapnamalhotra.io/birthday Someone asked me recently, if Podcasting has changed my life. It really got me thinking, was this a game changer for me? The answer was YES! Podcasting has made me courageous and more adventurous. I get inspired everytime I do a podcast episode. I love being surrounded by people that are challenging the Status Quo. I’m doing more things than I ever would have done. I’m trying new things and constantly thinking ‘WHY NOT’, instead of ‘BUT’. A new fresh take on things. At the end of 2018, I had made six month goals (instead of yearly goals), because I wanted the flexibility to add to things. So, my 3 goals were Publishing my Networking book - NAILED IT!!! In fact, I ended up on the Amazon Best Sellers list, which totally took me by surprise. First of all, I need to thank everyone for their amazing support for my book launch, Connect the Dots, turning strangers into meaningful network relationships. I have to say, I love all the emails and notes. I’m glad that many people are finding the book and the companion workbook so useful! One listener, said the book had the ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ type of feeling and they loved all the stories! I’m sooo glad. This has definitely been a labour of love! The best was when my niece that named the book, was reading it. I was telling my brother in law, that we shouldn’t let her read it because she’s too clever to begin with and will learn how to build relationships so that she always stays ahead.. She’ll negotiate and win like no tomorrow! And she’s only 10! Goal #2 was to conduct a free sales webinar. Which I did. I discussed common sales proposal mistakes and best practices. I’ve added the webinar information in the shownotes. I love teaching and sharing best practices. My goal #3 was to finalize the volunteer partnership, so that we can start to make an impact on the world. I truly believe that education and awareness is instrumental in overcoming any challenges and obstacles. If children start teaching their uneducated parents, then we have a hope for the future. We need to provide opportunities for those that don’t have that privilege. And I found a charity that does just that. I’ve partnered with Food for Life Vrindavan (FFLV) . In fact, a portion of the proceeds of the book is going to them. Primarily, FFLV runs schools providing free education, meals, skill training and medical help to over 1500 girls in Vrindavan, India. This also includes free Meal Distribution, Cleaning and Tree planting, Paper Recycling , Organic farming, Sewing and Embroidery Centre (providing training & employment opportunity for village women). Over the past 25 years of working at grassroots, they saw the intense hardships a girl faces without an education, Child Marriage being the most common one, where she is forced into an adult role at an early age. FFLV aims to keep the girl in school until she is 18 to prevent early marriage. We also encourage & support the girl to pursue university education if she wants. I can’t believe that we’ve been producing podcasts for a year and a half! It’s been amazing and lots of fun! It’s been incredibly inspirational to highlight Canadian Innovators. In fact, One of the little shifts that has been happening is that not only highlighting Canadian Innovators so that we can be inspired to run our areas of our lives or careers better. We are also having additional global innovators talk about innovation best practices. Along with, having episodes about essential business lifeskills! I’ve been getting a lot of questions from some of the listeners being concerned about how all this Automation/Outsourcing/Mergers & Acquisitions and so on is going to impact their careers and industries. The truth is, it is not a question of “IF”, it’s a question of WHEN. We are on the slow side of the rate of change and it’s only going to accelerate. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I have an online digital course #FUTURE PROOF that helps people navigate towards this to get ahead, get noticed and even promoted! I’ve put a link in the show notes ! What are my goals for the next 6 months Do group coaching calls to help people #FUTURE PROOF themselves. I’m going to share some timeless management consulting secrets to help individuals become disruptors. I’m so excited for this online course - 8 hours of pure GOLD!!! Write my 2nd book - did I tell you that writing this book was literally the hardest thing that I’ve ever done! Well, going to do it again! But, I have definitely learned a few lessons! I have about 5 different topics, so I need to sit down and do some prioritization I’m going to do some workshops & webinars from discussing innovation trends to how to network effectively. 2019 is going to be awesome! This 6 months planning & goal setting has really lived up to the challenge. In 2018, I had set goals for the entire year and only did 2/3rd of them. I set up my 6 months goal and did all of them 100%, plus I launched a virtual book club that I adore! You can join the BrainFood Book Club! You don’t need to read the book to get the value from it! Now, it’s my birthday and I have some things to give away. Just a few of my favorite things! You know I absolutely adore truLOCAL!
