https://www.marketingwords.com/blog/write-copy-future-pacing/?ref=cathy_goodwin I recently came across a workshop on writing creative nonfiction. And that made me ask the question: What is the difference between creative writing and business writing? What about a course in film script writing? ? Of course the more writing you do, the better you get. And you'll get better a storytelling. But sometimes we're tempted to share a story works as a creative story but doesn't work as a business story. Boundaries are blurred for big companies. They tell stories that could qualify as purely creative. Think of the Budweiser puppies or the Christmas story of an old man dining alone. Solopreneurs do not use stories like these...and they shouldn't. So I want to set the record straight on business vs creative...a business vs a literary story. And let's remember that memoir is more like fiction than business. This episode discusses... ...3 differences between literary fiction and business stories. ...the hidden plot in memoir ...how the purpose of the book influences the way people read it (and specifically, the differences in reading business books vs. creative books RESOURCES: Do you want to take a creative story and translate it to business? Casey Ebro is a veteran editor who has significantly contributed to the publishing world. She formerly served as an Executive Editor with the Business Group at McGraw Hill Professional. In this role, she was responsible for acquiring, editing, and publishing business books in various subjects such as leadership, workplace culture, entrepreneurship, and innovation. She has been responsible for bestsellers and notable titles, including “Madoff Talks” by Jim Campbell, which inspired a Netflix documentary series, and the Wall Street Journal bestsellers “Connect First” by Melanie Katzman and “Zero to IPO” by Frederic Kerrest. Casey played a pivotal role at McGraw Hill in establishing the healthcare category into a robust multi-million dollar program, which featured prominent titles like the New York Times Science bestseller “The Digital Doctor” and “The Cleveland Clinic Way”.Starting Up and Striking OutCasey's journey into the world of editing began in her formative years as a passionate bookworm. In high school, she took a significant step toward her publishing dreams by becoming the English editor for her school's literary publication called “Facets”. She reveled in the collaborative process with other editors and took pleasure in discovering the literary talents of her peers. Her passion further intensified in university, where she joined the literary publication named “Heights”, participating in deeper, more advanced discussions about submitted works. These university experiences exposed her to diverse opinions and debates, making the editing environment incredibly stimulating and enriching for her.A Book is a Business“Writing a book is like starting a business,” according to Casey. Authors are entrepreneurs introducing a unique product to the market. In essence, the book is a reflection of the author's ideas and beliefs, and its promotion doesn't end post-publication. Some successful books keep selling years or even decades after their release, and this continued success comes from the author's dedication to the ideas and ensuring they reach as many readers as possible. Publishing a book is a long-term commitment that requires careful execution, planning, and motivation. “A lot of people think about it in terms of the first three months or the first six months or first year or first three years after a book is published. I think that's really short sighted because if the ideas are good, they're good from now till kingdom come,” Casey shares. A book, like a product, needs to find its audience, establish product-market fit, and receive investment for growth, Barry agrees. “It never ends.”Investing in IdeasBarry and Casey discuss the challenges of book publishing. Barry remarks that the journey isn't just about having a great idea; it's about putting in the necessary work to present the idea, penning an entire chapter about it, and then devising a plan on how to maximize its potential. Likening this to the startup experience, Barry notes, “It's almost like I had to have a pitch deck. What's the problem I'm solving? Who's the target customer? What's my go-to-market plan? How am I going to generate sales and then also write a chapter to exemplify the idea?” Casey comments that selecting a manuscript is similar to venture capitalists choosing a startup to invest in.Looking AheadCasey wants authors to confidently claim their space, believing they are uniquely positioned to address a topic due to their specific experiences, inventions, or groundbreaking insights. This individuality becomes crucial when competing against established names in the industry, given that readers will be investing both money and time in their book.Read full show notes at BarryOReilly.comResourcesCasey Ebro on LinkedIn

HERE ARE TIPS TO GET STARTED WRITING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PLAN: Research. Start by doing your research and know what you're getting into. Make sure you understand the market your company is entering, as well as the competition. Consider using a business plan template. This type of document can help you organize your thoughts and set forth measurable objectives for your business. There are many different templates available online or you can download the Simple Steps Business Plan Workbook to get started now. Just start! Starting your business can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and information, it can be easier than you think. A well-written plan can help you avoid common mistakes and ensure success. Welcome to the latest episode of Starting a Business Simplified! Today, we're discussing an essential aspect of starting and growing a business: writing a business plan. A business plan is a document that outlines the goals, strategies, and financial projections for your business. It serves as a roadmap for your company and is an essential tool for securing funding and attracting investors. In this episode, we'll be discussing why writing a business plan is important and how to get started. First and foremost, a business plan is important because it helps you to clearly define your business's goals and objectives. By taking the time to sit down and write out your plans, you can ensure that you are thinking through all aspects of your business, including your target market, competition, and financial projections. This can help you to identify any potential challenges or weaknesses in your business model, and to develop strategies to overcome them. Furthermore, a business plan can also serve as a guide for your business as it grows. It can help you to stay focused on your goals, and to track your progress over time. By regularly reviewing your business plan, you can make adjustments as needed and ensure that your business stays on track. When it comes to writing a business plan, there are a few key elements to include. The first is an executive summary, which provides an overview of your business and its goals. Next, you'll want to include a description of your products or services, as well as an analysis of your target market and competition. A marketing and sales plan should also be included, as well as financial projections and an overview of your management team. In conclusion, writing a business plan is an essential aspect of starting and growing a business. It helps you to clearly define your goals and objectives and can guide your business as it grows.

Rev. Caffie Risher is a Christian pastor and grief counselor who is deeply aware of the presence of toxic theology in scripture and in the teachings of the church. She infuses her ministry for the bereaved with clear, critical thinking and a non-dogmatic approach to spirituality in the process of grief and mourning. Caffie has early recollections of walking dirt roads in the south with her grandmother Jessie Mae where they would take care of relatives and community members when there was a death in the family or if someone was sick and needed help. Both her mother, Earlene Williams Risher, and grandmother taught her Christ-care, compassion, and pastoral concern for others at an early age. For Caffie, it is life's experiences, her own mortality, death of loved ones, personal loss, grief, educational experiences, and certifications that have all shaped and equipped her for this journey to minister hope and healing to those who are hurting. In 2002 she was appointed to the position of “Minority Scholar” teaching public speaking and introduction to business courses at Passaic County Community College. Eighteen years later she holds the position of a tenured Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator of Public Speaking in the Fine and Performing Arts Department. She teaches Public Speaking, Business Communication, Business Writing, and Death and Dying courses. She also serves as chair of the Distinguished Lecturer Series and faculty advisor to the Power in Christ Christian Club who won the Emerging Club Award for excellent campus involvement and exceptional leadership.Prior to this, she held a post at New York Theological Seminary where she taught for several years in the Certificate of Ministry program. You write all the time. Texts, memos, presentation headers, tweets, posts on LinkedIn. And emails. So many emails. But experience doesn't beget effectiveness; even the best writers make mistakes. And writing is high stakes–how we convey our ideas, concerns, questions, and feedback will determine how others see us as professionals and as people. In this episode, we hear from Erin Lebacqz, the founder of High Value Writing, where she helps workplace writers achieve their professional and personal potential. With over 25 years of experience teaching writing, Erin understands that writing is difficult because writing is complicated. How do you connect with your reader? What information do you include, and what do you exclude? How do you communicate clearly, without compromising relationships? Writing is grueling work. But when we write well, we're more likely to apply for (and get) that internship or dream job. We feel more confident about asking questions or sharing a concern. We build trust with our colleagues, and we earn respect from others. When we write well, we optimize our ability to be effective, both professionally and personally. Leadership requires clarity of thought, speech and writing. But all too often business executives fall into the trap of using (and overusing) corporate buzzwords – ‘deep dive', ‘move the needle', ‘outside the box' – and filling their emails and documents with obfuscating jargon. Former speechwriter to Tony Blair, Philip Collins argues that ‘business is a simple enterprise made complex by people who do it badly'. His new book, To Be Clear: A Style Guide for Business Writing, is a call to arms, urging businesses to stop using the language of nonsense and start communicating with clarity, simplicity and meaning. In this episode of the No Bullsh*t Leadership podcast, hosted by CEO of Havas Creative Chris Hirst, we explored how business writing has changed over time, how business executives can practically cut through the bullsh*t that has become orthodox, and how we can all wield language to become better leaders. Ask any copywriter: Clients want their content to "sound like me." But online writing doesn't get read like a literary classic. Readers skim and scan. They notice phrases and expressions. They remember stories. Owners of small businesses and online entrepreneurs will be most productive when they focus on message - not voice. Today is January 1, so happy New Year! It's a great time for a fresh start. I don't know what your 2019 was like but mine was honestly pretty bumpy. But I wouldn't frame it as a bad year — in fact, I'd say it was a very good year in that it was a year of major growth, clarity, and learning. It's also appropriate because this is a fresh start for this podcast. This is the introductory episode to the Smart Business Writing podcast, and I thought it would be good to take a few minutes and give you an overview of what the show is all about. I want to cover several things such as who the show is for, what you'll learn, the show format, what this show is NOT, and some guiding principles that form the foundation of the show.
