In Shakespear's Sister she was known as Marcella Detroit, but for most of her career, she has gone under the name Marcy Levy. It may surprise you to hear that Marcella, who sang lead vocals on their biggest hit 'Stay', was already a successful songwriter before teaming up with Siobhan Fahey. She co-wrote the Eric Clapton classic ‘Lay Down Sally' with George Terry in 1977, and sang backing vocals on ‘Wonderful Tonight' amongst other tracks. Her early work includes touring with Bob Seeger in the band Julia, singing backup vocals on his ‘Back in '72' album, and even playing support with her band Julia at a David Bowie gig. She has worked with numerous artists over the years, and after the success of Shakespear's Sister, who eventually, and not on the best of terms, split, she continued with a solo career. In 2019, Shakespear's sister reformed, and Marcella and Siobhan were able to make peace again. The interview is wide-ranging and provides a fascinating insight into a prolific songwriter and artist, who continues to make great music today.Connect with me on Instagram; steve.blame Thanks to POP; The History Makers insanely wonderful talent booker: #ArchieCMichaelSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. In this exclusive podcast series, returning noir-pop duo Shakespears Sister explore their beginnings as one of Britain’s most subversive duos, their iconic number one single Stay, how they eventually fell apart in the early 90s – and then came back together, with brand new music, after 26 years.  Over three episodes, released each week, Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit talk candidly about exploding female stereotypes in music, their fight for authenticity and their fight with each other, as well as how Americana and Nick Cave have helped shape their new sound.

It's been a month since Lyra McKee was killed in Londonderry. She was 29 and was already making waves in journalism as well as being an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. The night she was shot she had been watching rioting in Creggan, a housing estate on the outskirts of the city. The New IRA said its members carried out the murder. At her funeral politicians were urged to find solutions to Northern Ireland's problems and Lyra's partner, Sara Canning, addressed them personally, seizing the opportunity to speak to them candidly. From the very start, she faced the TV cameras to pay her own tributes to her girlfriend. This weekend she's been speaking at an equal marriage rally in Belfast. She talks to Jane Garvey.Ashton Applewhite is calling for a movement to end ageism in her book 'This Chair Rocks'. Maggy Pigott's twitter account @AgeingBetter, about the unexpected joys of aging, picked up huge numbers of followers overnight; Her upcoming book is called How To Age Joyfully. So why is the conversation around aging so negative? And how much could our lives, health and economy improve if it changed? In 2018 over 100,000 online images of child sexual abuse were taken down by the Internet Watch Foundation. The UK-based organisation is seeing a sharp increase in self-generated content, particularly girls aged 11 to 13, who are filming themselves on webcams in their own bedrooms. Chief Executive Susie Hargreaves discusses what can be done.Shakespears Sister. The nineties pop duo have reunited as a band after not talking to each other for 26 years. Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit look back, explain how they got back together and to perform their new single, live in the studio.Presenter: Jane Garvey Producer: Kirsty StarkeyInterviewed Guest: Sara Canning Interviewed Guest: Ashton Applewhite Interviewed Guest: Maggy Pigott Interviewed Guest: Susie Hargreaves Interviewed Guest: Marcella Detroit Interviewed Guest: Siobhan Fahey

360Karma’s Live Live Thrive Show guest this week is Hope Juber, discussing “Old Hollywood vs. New Hollywood.” Hope’s first professional entertainment experience was playing a recurring role as Greg Brady’s girlfriend, Rachel, on The Brady Bunch. After college she joined her father, Sherwood Schwartz (famed creator of Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch), as a writer. Hope’s musical It’s The Housewives! enjoyed a very successful L.A.run, as did A Very Brady Musical, for which she co-wrote both book and score and which earned her the “Best Author” ADA award. Hope’s innovative play Without Annette had extended runs at The Whitefire Theatre and Theatre West and is published by Playscripts. In 2017, she reinvented The Housewives as The Nasty Housewives for RESisters, an album of protest songs inspired by the madness of the current political scene. It also features Marcella Detroit, singer and, co-writer of Eric Clapton’s mega-hit ‘Lay Down Sally.’ We’ll also talk about how Hope is connected to her favorite group of all times, the Beatles.

In this episode Gearoid chats to singer songwriter Marcella Detroit who is well-known for her solo records and her time in Shakespears Sister (sic). Before she was a recording artist in her own right she was also a respected songwriter, session singer and backing vocalist working with greats such as Aretha Franklin, Better Midler, Burt Bacharach, Belinda Carlisle and many more. She toured extensively with Eric Clapton and was responsible for some of his best loved songs (she co-wrote “Lay Down Sally” and more with him). Marcella chats about the highs and lows of Shakespears Sister. The heady period where they attained the longest-running number one for a female artist, a record still unbroken today, to the awards ceremony where it all imploded as they picked up a best album award. She ruminates on the changes in the music industry and her pride at producing her own records in her home studio and constantly reinventing her sound. She recalls the heady glamour days of lear-jets, live-aid and Elton John. The constant in all of that is her consistently brilliant music.
