This episode - our second in a row to delve into the weird world of Number Ones - is all about connections. Two of our chart-toppers have roots in the 18th century; three of them were originally written in another language, the same people translated two of them into English, and two of them feature misheard lyrics; two of them gave their performers record-breaking tenth Number Ones; the keyboardist on one was the producer on another; two of them introduce second vocalists halfway through, who shift the meanings of the songs. Everything connects, and we are here to talk you through the connections!YouTube playlist // Spotify playlist // bonus tracks & extra bitsTo join in with the voting, please submit your 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourites, plus your "most bad and hated" selection, to:Twitter: @whichdecadetops // Facebook // whichdecadeistops@gmail.comThe voting deadline for this episode is 6pm UK time, Wednesday 15th March 2023. Die Literal Video Version von Meat Loafs "I'd Do Anything For Love" findet ihr hier. She co-wrote the 1977 Eric Clapton hit "Lay Down Sally" and released her debut album Marcella in 1982. She joined Shakespears Sister in 1988 with ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Their first two albums, Sacred Heart (1989), and Hormonally Yours (1992), both reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. We all know what its like. You record a smash hit song but accidentally mention a brand name leading to a ban from the BBC so you have to fly 6,000 miles across the Atlantic to record two words then fly back again. To celebrate Ray Davies from the Kinks' marathon jaunt for a minor act, its a Lola-tastic week of charts this week as Ben and Phil ogle unusual things that have been banned, test the worst product ideas of all time and there's a right and proper BBC-approved quiz which isnt just an excuse for Ben to bellow non-sequiturs. Honest. Plus: Kinder madness, Canadian baby chaos, the car defined, vinaigrette panic, naughty Coke, the cigarette of the nineties, no Valentine's Day for God, TV dinners by Domestos, Martha is eaten up, the Delorean - was it all bad?, cheese lips, why Salisbury is the erotic capital of England, the carrot Twix, our new murder-based stretch goals on Patreon and Shakespears Sister are banned for fannying about on a table. It's been a month since Lyra McKee was killed in Londonderry. She was 29 and was already making waves in journalism as well as being an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. The night she was shot she had been watching rioting in Creggan, a housing estate on the outskirts of the city. The New IRA said its members carried out the murder. At her funeral politicians were urged to find solutions to Northern Ireland's problems and Lyra's partner, Sara Canning, addressed them personally, seizing the opportunity to speak to them candidly. From the very start, she faced the TV cameras to pay her own tributes to her girlfriend. This weekend she's been speaking at an equal marriage rally in Belfast. She talks to Jane Garvey.Ashton Applewhite is calling for a movement to end ageism in her book 'This Chair Rocks'. Maggy Pigott's twitter account @AgeingBetter, about the unexpected joys of aging, picked up huge numbers of followers overnight; Her upcoming book is called How To Age Joyfully. So why is the conversation around aging so negative? And how much could our lives, health and economy improve if it changed? In 2018 over 100,000 online images of child sexual abuse were taken down by the Internet Watch Foundation. The UK-based organisation is seeing a sharp increase in self-generated content, particularly girls aged 11 to 13, who are filming themselves on webcams in their own bedrooms. Chief Executive Susie Hargreaves discusses what can be done.Shakespears Sister. The nineties pop duo have reunited as a band after not talking to each other for 26 years. In this episode Gearoid chats to singer songwriter Marcella Detroit who is well-known for her solo records and her time in Shakespears Sister (sic). Before she was a recording artist in her own right she was also a respected songwriter, session singer and backing vocalist working with greats such as Aretha Franklin, Better Midler, Burt Bacharach, Belinda Carlisle and many more. She toured extensively with Eric Clapton and was responsible for some of his best loved songs (she co-wrote “Lay Down Sally” and more with him). Marcella chats about the highs and lows of Shakespears Sister. The heady period where they attained the longest-running number one for a female artist, a record still unbroken today, to the awards ceremony where it all imploded as they picked up a best album award. She ruminates on the changes in the music industry and her pride at producing her own records in her home studio and constantly reinventing her sound. She recalls the heady glamour days of lear-jets, live-aid and Elton John. The constant in all of that is her consistently brilliant music. It's really serious. well it's not really, he isn't but Shakespears Sister is stuck in his mind, as is Shirley Bassey, Frankie, the one gone to hollywood, not the friend of Sister Sledge and SuBo rushes through on a wild horse, leaving us in tears. It's the Shirley Bassey special and there's news on Jill Gascoigne who is now Glynis Barber, (how to lose a job and 20 years overnight), and some Chihuahua smuggling.
