"Sounds of '91: Jerry Garcia Band Live and Marijuana News Unveiled"Larry Mishkin  focuses on Jerry Garcia music and breaking stories related to marijuana. He introduces a Jerry Garcia Band performance from November 15, 1991, at Madison Square Garden and delves into the details of the songs performed, particularly highlighting "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate." Amidst the music commentary, Larry also addresses significant marijuana-related news, emphasizing recent studies suggesting a potential connection between marijuana use and heart issues. He, however, points out limitations in the studies and emphasizes the need for a more comprehensive examination of the subject..Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast   Jerry Garcia BandNovember 15, 1991MSGNY, NYJerry Garcia Band 1991-11-15 FOB Schoeps Brotman Metchick Anon Noel t-flac1648 : Joe Noel : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive  INTRO:               How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You                           Track No. 2                           0:00 – 1:30 How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" is a song recorded by American soul singer Marvin Gaye from his fifth studio album of the same name (1965). It was written in 1964 by the Motown songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. The song title was inspired by one of the actor and comedian Jackie Gleason's signature phrases, "How Sweet It Is!"  Released on Nov. 4, 1964 with Forever on the B-side. Cash Box described it as "a medium-paced, rollicking chorus-backed ode about a fella who's on top of the world since he met up with Miss Right."[4]AllMusic critic Jason Ankeny described the song as a "radiant pop confection," noting that it was unusual for Gaye in being a "straightforward love song" that doesn't reflect Gaye's usual demons.[5] Ankeny commented on the soulfulness of the song, and particularly noted the piano riff. James Taylor released his version of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" as the lead single from his album Gorilla (1975).[11]Taylor's 1975 single has been the most successful remake of the song to date, hitting number one on the Easy Listening chart and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Long a staple of the JGB's set lists, First played on September 18, 1975 a Sophie's in Palo AltoLast played on April 23, 1995 at the Warfield Theater in S.F.Total played 373 times, by far the JGB's most played tune (Midnight Moonlight is 2d at 344) Usually a show opener.   There are three Dead shows on Nov. 13 and six JGB shows.  Of those six, none are available on Archivd.org.  So I am dong a JGB show two days later on Nov. 15, 1991 from MSG.  The standard JGB lineup for that time: Jerry Garcia; guitar, vocals- John Kahn; bass- Melvin Seals; keyboards- David Kemper; drums- Jaclyn LaBranch; backing vocals- Gloria Jones; backing vocals Great musicians, great vocals, its 1991, but Jerry is rocking. A fun night with Blues Traveler as the opening act. This show was released as Garcia Live Vol. 16 SHOW #1:                        Simple Twist of Fate                                         Track No. 5                                         3:00 – 4:40               In 1975, Bob Dylan released his album Blood on the Tracks, which included the song “Simple Twist of Fate.” The song is a haunting ballad about a failed relationship, and many fans have speculated about who Dylan wrote it about. While Dylan has never confirmed the identity of the song's subject, many believe that he wrote it about his former girlfriend, Joan Baez. Bob Dylan's message is one of hope and change. He speaks of a world that is better than the one we currently live in and urges people to work together to make it a reality. He also advocates for peace and love, and has said that these are the only things that can truly change the world. Always a big fan of Dylan, Garcia played this song 217 times, the first on July 4, 1976 at the Great American Music Hall in S.F. and the last on April 23, 1995 at the Warfield in S.F.  If you are wondering why that April 23, 1995 dates keeps popping up, that was the last JGB show. SHOW #2:                        Lay Down Sally                                         Track No. 6                                         1:40 – 3:15 "Lay Down Sally" is a song performed by Eric Clapton, and written by Clapton, Marcy Levy, and George Terry. It appeared on his November 1977 album Slowhand, and reached No. 3 on the BillboardHot 100 chart.  It was released as a single with Cocaine on the B-side, quite the heavy hitting release.  It was the song of the summer of 1978 and always one of Slow Hand's favorite songs. "Lay Down Sally" is a country blues song performed in the style of J. J. Cale. Clapton explained, "It's as close as I can get, being English, but the band being a Tulsa band, they play like that naturally. You couldn't get them to do an English rock sound, no way. Their idea of a driving beat isn't being loud or anything. It's subtle."Billboard magazine described Clapton's vocal as "low key but earthy" and also praised Marcy Levy's backing vocals.[5]Cash Box praised Clapton's "guitar finesse."JGB covered the tune 54 timesFirst: November 20, 1990 Warfield, SFLast: March 4, 1995 Warfield, SF Gets a great crowd reaction and Jerry loves jamming on Clapton tunes. Link to picture of Garcia and Clapton from back in the day:  Jerry Garcia & Eric Clapton Pose | Grateful Dead Clapton interviewed on the Dead in 1968:Have you heard the Grateful Dead record?A:  “Yeah, it's great.” Peter Townshend said he saw the Dead at the Pop Festival, and called them “one of the original ropeys.” A:   “Ropey! That means a drag. I don't think the quality of their music is as high as a lot of other good recording bands. People are more concerned with live music, maybe, than with recording. I'm not sure of that. I'm guessing. If the Grateful Dead are one of the best, they're not doing a very good job on record.”What do you think of the guitar playing? Jerry Garcia's synthesis of blues, jazz and country and western, with a little jug band thrown in?A:   “It's very good, and very tight, but it's not really my bag.” SHOW #3:       Deal                        Track No. 9                        2:46 – 4:15 Finally, a Garcia tune!  And one of his best. One of the Grateful Dead's live staples, and many gambling songs is the Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia collaboration, “Deal”. First performed on February 19th, 1971, the song was in regular rotation until the end, both for the Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band.“Deal” saw studio release as the opening track to Jerry Garcia's 1972 debut solo album, Garcia, which also contained several other classic Grateful Dead live songs including “Sugaree”, “Bird Song”, “Loser”, and “The Wheel”. It's also worth noting that the classic folk song, “Don't Let Your Deal Go Down”, first recorded in 1925 by Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers contains many similarities to the Grateful Dead song. Hunter was known to pull references from a wide variety of sources in his songwriting, and it is highly likely he was familiar with the tune. JGB played it 291 times in concert.  First on March 4, 1978 at the Keystone in Palo Alto, CALast time on April 23, 1995 at the Warfield Grateful Dead played it 422 timesFirst on Feb. 19, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NYLast on June 18, 1995 at Giant's Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.Longest absence from the rotation was 29 shows from Oct. 2, 1988 at Shoreline in lovely Mountain View, CA and then not again until April 11, 1989 at the Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont, IL You had to be trying really hard, or just be really unlucky to never catch this tune during those days.  I still say it is the best Garcia tune, great music, great tempo, Jerry loved to jam on this tune and his voice really made the song.  Almost always a first set closer.  SHOW #4:               Ain't No Bread In The Breadbox                                Track No. 14                                1:22 – 3:02 Written by Phillip Jackson (September 28, 1951[1] – October 30, 2009),[2] best known as Norton Buffalo, was an American singer-songwriter, countryand blues harmonica player, record producer, bandleader and recording artist who was a versatile proponent of the harmonica, including chromatic[3] and diatonic. In early 1976 Buffalo joined the "farewell" European tour of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, and was recorded on the band's final live album We've Got a Live One Here!,[5] which included Buffalo's song "Eighteen Wheels." After the tour, Buffalo returned to California, briefly played with a number of local bands, and later in 1976 he joined the Steve Miller Band's Fly Like an Eagle Tour. He also played harmonica on the band's hit follow-up album Book of Dreams, released in May 1977. Buffalo appeared on the tracks "Winter Time" and "The Stake." By the late 1970s Buffalo had formed his own band, The Stampede, and recorded two Capitol Records albums: Lovin' in the Valley of the Moon and Desert Horizon. In 1977 his harmonica work appeared on Bonnie Raitt's Sweet Forgiveness and The Doobie Brothers' Livin' on the Fault Line albums. He was a member of the Mickey Hart band High Noon in the late 70s and early 80s with Merl Saunders, Mike Hinton, Jim McPhearson, Vicki Randle, and Bobby Vega, and played with Saunders on the Rainforest Band album It's in the Air in 1993. Ain't No Bread In The Breadbox was performed 65 times by the Jerry Garcia Band.First time on Nov. 6, 1991at the Cap Center in Landover, MD (just 9 days earlier but this was already the band's 7th performance of the tune.  Jerry really liked it. The song was played by Phil Lesh with Norton Buffalo, Boz Scaggs and others in 2004. The song was also played by Billy & The Kids in 2021.                        OUTRO:                  What A Wonderful World                                Track No. 19                                1:55 – 3:37 "What a Wonderful World" is a song written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single. In April 1968, it topped the pop chart in the United Kingdom,[2] but performed poorly in the United States because Larry Newton, the president of ABC Records, disliked the song and refused to promote it.After it was heard in the film Good Morning, Vietnam, it was reissued as a single in 1988, and rose to number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.[3] Armstrong's recording was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.In Graham Nash's book Off the Record: Songwriters on Songwriting, George Weiss says he wrote the song specifically for Louis Armstrong, as he was inspired by Armstrong's ability to bring together people of different races. JGB played the song 12 times in concertFirst was on Nov. 6. 1991 at the Cap Centre in Maryland (again, just 9 days before this show, this was the band's 4th performance of the tuneLast Oct. 31, 1992 at Oakland Alameda County Colisium.Just in the rotation for one year. But who can't love Jerry channeling his inner Louis Armstrong and harmonizing the Jackie and Gloria.  A great way to end a show and send everyone home with a smile and warm fuzzy feeling.A perfect night with Jerry.  Mishkin Law, LLC500 Skokie Blvd.Suite 325Northbrook, IL  60062Cell: (847) 812-1298Office Direct: (847) 504-1480lmishkin@mishkin.law

Great to catch up with a lady who's more than making up for her late start in racing. Connie dabbled with show horses during the decade in which she worked as Bakery Manager at Woolworths Emu Plains. She later gained a job with a Hawkesbury thoroughbred trainer and her life changed dramatically. Connie talks about her frantically busy lifestyle at Dubbo. She explains that she and business partner Michelle Jones own most of the horses in the stable. The trainer says she rides many of her horses in trackwork but is ably assisted by jockey Ken Dunbar. Connie talks of her commitment to keeping her horses outdoors. She talks of recent wins at professional race meetings in the west. Connie explains her move to the picnic circuit and comes up with some interesting statistics. She acknowledges the welcome increase in amateur prize money in recent years. She talks of the one anomaly confronting picnic racing- a worrying shortage of jockeys. Connie acknowledges the successful partnership she's formed with Brazilian born Liandro Ribeiro who's in huge demand on the picnic circuit. She talks of Liandro's full time job with Sydney trainer Gary Portelli. The trainer acknowledges the talents of Ribeiro's partner, fellow jockey Julia Presits. Connie talks of her exciting win in last year's Picnic Championship Final on her home track at Dubbo. She makes special mention of Sally Faulks who only recently joined the ranks of picnic jockeys. Sally rode her first winner at Tullibigeal in March, and made it a double later in the day. Connie says she enjoys the relaxed atmosphere of picnic racing and talks of one venue where all participants are treated to a sumptuous feast. She talks of her trusty Mercedes truck and the long hours she spends on the road. Horse loving Connie looks back on her job at the Hawkesbury Valley stables of David Keegan and her scary introduction to trackwork. She recalls with affection her association with 8 time Gr 1 winner Apache Cat. Simply by being in the right place at the right time she got to ride him trackwork on his first Sydney campaign. She later accompanied the legendary sprinter to Brisbane. Connie talks of the $1000 mare who launched her solo training career. That mare was called Lay Down Sally for very good reason. She says she combined racehorse training with the pre-training of young horses for trainers like Graeme Begg and Gerald Ryan during the Hawkesbury years. Connie endorses the Inglis Digital On Line Sale which has brought her some surprise results. She speaks with great affection about an evergreen member of the team who races under the curious name of Billy Bent Ear. The trainer makes no apology to the western race callers who have to work hard to cope with multiple runners in her spectacular yellow and purple stable colours. Connie talks of the talented galloper Deel Street and the brilliant apprentice Anna Roper who will resume shortly from injury. Anna rides regularly for the Greig stable.

The supergroup U.K. was founded by former King Crimson percussionist Bill Bruford (also a former founder of Yes) and bassist and vocalist John Wetton (also a former member of Uriah Heep, and Roxy Music).  After failing to reform King Crimson, each of the two brought in a musician they thought would work well in the group.  Wetton brought in Eddie Jobson, violinist and keyboardist from Frank Zappa's band.  Bruford brought in Allan Holdsworth on guitars (who had worked on Bruford's prior solo project.  Their self titled debut album was released in May, 1978.  Although a couple of songs were edited for single release, the album U.K. is best known as a prog rock masterpiece, and is cited as inspirational to many musicians who followed in the prog rock genre. After an extensive tour supporting the album, Wetton and Jobson had a falling out with Holdsworth and fired him.  Bill Bruford left at that time and was replaced by Terry Bozzio, another alumnus of Frank Zappa's band and a future founding member of Missing Persons.  John Wetton would go on in the days after U.K. to be the front man for Asia.Rob brings us the prog rock monster-piece.   In the Dead of NightThe track that leads off the album was one of two songs to be edited for release as a single.  On the album it is the first of three songs which form a continuous suite on the first album side.  The 7/4 time and the synthesizer - the Yamaha CS-80 had just been released - are prog rock hallmarks.  The electric violin is an unusual addition.By the Light of DayThis track is the second movement of the "In the Dead of Night" suite.  Rather than have a clear change in tracks, there is a slow transition via a "spacey" interlude into the new song of the suite.  "Black clouds moving gray skies to thunder.  Kinetic sunrise fever and flood.  Fire and water element anger horizon melting to blood."Presto Vivace and RepriseThis is the third movement of the "In the Dead of Night suite.  This is a much faster piece (as the term Vivace would suggest) before transitioning back into a reprise of "In the Dead of Night."Time to KillThe abrupt start to this song is due to the way the tracks drift into each other.  The concept is that of boredom, of being stuck in a place.  "Time to kill, going nowhere, killing time, staying where there's time to kill, going nowhere..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly (from the motion picture "The Buddy Holly Story") Gary Busey was nominated for the Oscar for his portrayal of early rocker Buddy Holly in this film.  Busey would sing and play for the part. STAFF PICKS:Goodbye Girl by David Gates Bruce leads off the staff picks with a soft rock solo from former Bread front man David Gates.  The song is from the Neil Simon movie "The Goodbye Girl," which would lead to Richard Dreyfuss becoming the youngest man to win an Oscar for Best Actor at the time.    Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton  Brian presents a pop hit from Clapton's album Slowhand.  It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was written by Clapton, George Terry (guitar), and Marcy Levy (who sings the female parts on the song).  It was written in the country blues style of J.J. Cale, and hit number 26 on the Hot Country Songs chart, Clapton's best showing on that chart as a crossover.Ain't It Fun by Dead BoysWayne features a song from Cleveland's own Dead Boys.  This song appears on their second studio album, "We Have Come for Your Children."  They were known as one of the rowdiest bands on the punk scene.  It hit number 8 on the Mainstream Rock charts, and is an ode to the punk rock lifestyle. With a Little Luck by WingsRob brings us Paul McCartney with a song recorded largely in the Virgin Islands on a yacht equipped with a 24-track mobile recording studio installed on it.  This single from the album "London Town" hit number 1 on the pop charts.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Alaska by U.K. This instrumental lets us do some double dipping with the track that leads off side 2 of the U.K. album.

In Shakespear's Sister she was known as Marcella Detroit, but for most of her career, she has gone under the name Marcy Levy. It may surprise you to hear that Marcella, who sang lead vocals on their biggest hit 'Stay', was already a successful songwriter before teaming up with Siobhan Fahey. She co-wrote the Eric Clapton classic ‘Lay Down Sally' with George Terry in 1977, and sang backing vocals on ‘Wonderful Tonight' amongst other tracks. Her early work includes touring with Bob Seeger in the band Julia, singing backup vocals on his ‘Back in '72' album, and even playing support with her band Julia at a David Bowie gig. She has worked with numerous artists over the years, and after the success of Shakespear's Sister, who eventually, and not on the best of terms, split, she continued with a solo career. In 2019, Shakespear's sister reformed, and Marcella and Siobhan were able to make peace again. The interview is wide-ranging and provides a fascinating insight into a prolific songwriter and artist, who continues to make great music today.Connect with me on Instagram; steve.blame Thanks to POP; The History Makers insanely wonderful talent booker: #ArchieCMichaelSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. When Shakespeare's Sister struck gold with their #1 hit "Stay" in 1992, what listeners may not have known is that singer Marcella Detroit had already put in 20 years of professional singing by then. Marcy Levy starts out in the early 70s singing with Bob Seger, then moves on to Leon Russell, and then Eric Clapton where she even co-wrote several of his songs including "Lay Down Sally". She eventually joins up with Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey for SS, but that's really a short chapter of her long career which includes several solo albums, session singing (Hall & Oates, Aretha Franklin, Alice Cooper) and songwriting (Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Philip Bailey). Sally Robbins was a gifted athlete who managed to show so much promise, she was selected for the Australian Olympic rowing team. Although they were outsiders to medal at the Athen's games, the team had got themselves within half a second of the leaders. However, by the end of the race, the Australian boat dragged through the water over ten seconds after all the other teams had finished. What had happened? Why had they thrown away the lead? Who or what was responsible? This is the story of Lay Down Sally, Athens 2004. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Marcella Levy, known professionally as Marcella Detroit, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist.  She co-wrote the 1977 Eric Clapton hit "Lay Down Sally" and released her debut album Marcella in 1982. She joined Shakespears Sister in 1988 with ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Their first two albums, Sacred Heart (1989), and Hormonally Yours (1992), both reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. Detroit sang the lead vocals on their biggest hit, "Stay", which spent eight consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1992.  Detroit left the band in 1993 and had a UK top 20 hit with "I Believe" in 1994. She formed the Marcy Levy Band in 2002, and finished third in the 2010 ITV series Popstar to Operastar. We talk about growing up in Detroit, the Beatles, Eric Clapton, performing at Live Aid, Elton John, Shakespears Sister, her next album, and more!   COPYRIGHT CLAIM: the songs THE CORE, LAY DOWN SALLY & STAY were used with permission from Marcy Levy.

Thanks so much to Jennifer Hamilton for the suggestion! Anish talks about the spooky Sallie House and its chilling child ghost. Emma finished Hollywood this week, and has mixed feelings. In addition, the whole family watched the hilarious movie Extra Ordinary, the slightly depressing movie Chasing Coral, season two of Ricky Gervais’ After Life, and binged Solar Opposites (more or less together). Anish also watched the movie The Bookshop, and Emma watched Tucker and Dale vs. Evil on Netflix. The Intelligence Community as Enemy of the People. Realizing Chuck Schumer's "Six Ways From Sunday" crowd has become the real adversary. We share the startling conclusions of Professor Angelo Codevilla, from his latest essay in American Greatness. A long-time intelligence hand himself, Codevilla demystifies the ignorance and incompetence of the CIA, describing unelected "bureaucrats" running "a political scam" in search of absolute power. Our notes on the film The Good Shepherd and its portrayal of original spook James Jesus Angleton. Picasso and the MSM Mirror. The lessons of The Matrix. The joys of breaking through the relentless propaganda machine. Setting our minds free. Meanwhile, Lindsey Graham calls for a DOJ investigation into all things Ukraine. Regarding the alleged whistleblower, Devin Nunes says "the scheme has backfired" and probably marks "the end of Biden's campaign." After college she joined her father, Sherwood Schwartz (famed creator of Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch), as a writer. Hope’s musical It’s The Housewives! enjoyed a very successful L.A.run, as did A Very Brady Musical, for which she co-wrote both book and score and which earned her the “Best Author” ADA award. Hope’s innovative play Without Annette had extended runs at The Whitefire Theatre and Theatre West and is published by Playscripts. In 2017, she reinvented The Housewives as The Nasty Housewives for RESisters, an album of protest songs inspired by the madness of the current political scene. It also features Marcella Detroit, singer and, co-writer of Eric Clapton’s mega-hit ‘Lay Down Sally.’ We’ll also talk about how Hope is connected to her favorite group of all times, the Beatles.

By Spencer Hadlow, Andrew White & Taylen Furness StageArtXposed Australia’s sport-obsessed culture is on full display in Lay Down Sally: An Oarsome New Musical Robbin’ Hearts All Around the World!, an original musical comedy. Picking up right after she infamously laid down and stopped rowing during the women’s eight rowing final at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Sally Robbins is on a road to redemption. Her friends, family and teammates have turned their back on her but she has a plan to win back Australia’s hearts – by snagging a gold medal in cycling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sally quickly realises that there is one man perfectly suited to help her escape her past as ‘Lay Down Sally’ who is non-other than Australia’s most unexpected gold medal winner, Steven Bradbury. Together they train to take on the world’s best in Beijing, coming across a number of Australian sporting heroes and pop culture icons in the process (Rex Hunt, Margaret Court & Nick Giannopoulos to name a few). After being detoured by love triangles, fierce media scrutiny and her own plaguing self doubt, Sally learns that believing in herself is what will ultimately bring her sporting glory. Lay Down Sally is a satirical look at Australia’s obsession with sport and the harsh media spotlight faced by some of our top athletes. Nominated for ‘Outstanding New Work’ at the 2015 Union House Theatre Awards during its original run, Lay Down Sally is back bringing a snapshot of mid 2000s Australian culture to life on stage. Lay Down Sally is Australia’s answer to Book of Mormon. Laugh out loud, side splittingly, leave your face sore funny. Playing at Chapel off Chapel, the show opened last Tuesday Night to a sold out theatre. The audience and was not to be disappointed.  Written by Spencer Hadlow, Andrew White and Taylen Furness, The show starts directly after Sally Robbins (played by Nicola Guzzardi) 2004 Olympic lay down incident. It follows on to explore Sally’s determined comeback into Australia’s heart as she battles to win Gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in cycling! With the help of Steven Bradbury and Nick Giannopolis the Australian trio sing their way into our hearts, if not to glory.  The musical opens on a mostly bare stage with the cast already positioned in Olympic stances. On the screen were quotes about the incident from Australian public figures. From there it was catchy musical hit after hit beginning with the namesake "Lay Down Sally".  The set remained basic with no scene changes, this was also true of costumes with the whole cast sticking to one staple look. This allowed the audience to focus completely on the script and music which were detailed and expansive.  Behind the humour and silliness the show critiques Australias media and our almost unhealthy obsession with sport and our sporting heroes. They did this through parody with 2 media personalities commenting on Sally's struggles. By using humour to address this issue the audience is asked to consider their own role in condemning sporting losses.  The cast was outstanding. In particular their execution of the witty dialogue and with their classically trained voices they proved the Aussie accent can be appreciated in song. The songs themselves were creative and well performed.  The use of multimedia on the television was effectively utilised to add another layer of humour by incorporating previously filmed footage, maps and the 98 windows screen.  While every factor of the show was enjoyable what truly tickled my fancy was the incorporation of Aussie Humour complete with classic stereotypes and icons including just juice puns, bloody oaths, and Vegemite.  Lay Down Sally was memorable in its uniqueness and how Australian it was. A very funny and entertaining musical that everyone should take the time to see even if you don't like musicals.  It's playing at Chapel off Chapel until the 24th of October so don't miss it!   Written by Samara Barr

Janet Robin Biography “Working with Janet was an unforgettable experience. She followed her spirit – no limits. Janet’s love for her art is evident in her impassioned musicianship and inspired songwriting. The music we created together, vibrant and full of energy, encapsulates all that she is.”-John Carter Cash (Producer, owner Cash Cabin Studios) “From Randy Rhoads to Precious Metal, Lindsey Buckingham to John Carter Cash and all points in between – like a stint working with Meredith Brooks, opening for Midge Ure or appearing with Monte Montgomery – the ongoing tale of singer/guitarist/songwriter Janet Robin is a fascinating journey.” – Pollstar Janet Robin can be defined in a single word: musician. Many people attempt to make music, but few earn that illustrious title. Those in this business reserve that label for the rare individuals who consistently demonstrate a high level of talent, perseverance, taste and sensitivity over a period of time. To these people making music is not simply a pastime; it is a matter of blood and guts. That a serious addiction to making music runs through Robin’s veins is made clear from a quick review of her career. A Southern California native, Robin’s musical education began the moment she met her guitar teacher, Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne). Under Rhoads’ tutelage, Robin became an ace six-string player and, while still in high school, parlayed this education into a position as the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal. Discovered by Rodney Bingenheimer of the legendary L.A. rock radio station KROQ, Precious Metal was soon signed to Polygram Records. Later moving to Chameleon/Capitol Records, Precious Metal released several albums, wrote with Heart, Poison and Cheap Trick, toured extensively and gained accolades from both fans and critics alike. Following the demise of Precious Metal, Robin joined Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham’s band in support of his 1992 solo album, Out of the Cradle (Reprise Records). A consummate pro, working with Buckingham profoundly influenced Robin’s guitar playing, singing and songwriting, as well as her general approach to the music business. This new direction led to Robin’s 1998 debut solo album, Open the Door. Released on her own label, Little Sister Records, Buzz Weekly described the CD as “smart, savvy, fuzzy, hooky pop.” She has seen songs from this album featured in film and television; most notably on the then popular T.V. show Felicity. Ever the road warrior, she supported the disc by opening for such acts as Heart, Colin Hay, Loudon Wainwright III and the Smithereens, steadily building a wide fan base. Robin has since continued to tour heavily and averages as many as 150 dates per year. Encouraged by the warm reception of her debut, Robin released three more albums on Little Sister including the acoustic After the Flood which was recorded in Laurel Canyon and features “Beautiful Freak” which has since become a fan favorite and one of Robin’s defining songs. Also among these records is 2007’s Days of Summer. Recorded with producers David Bianco (Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, Mick Jagger) and Steve Baughman (Eminem, 50 Cent), this acoustic based EP is the work of an artist willing and able to explore the poignant emotional states of adulthood while avoiding the stereotypes brought on by most acoustic singer-songwriters. Working on the album was an experience that greatly affected her style and led Robin to many new and exciting opportunities including multiple tours in Europe. 2012 here in the USA, saw Robin release her album Everything Has Changed that bridges the gap between passionate acoustic music and gutsy rock n’ roll. With the help of her dedicated fan base, Robin was able to raise the funds ($20,000) for that studio effort. The loyal support enabled her to team up with producer John Carter Cash (Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) at Cash Cabin Studios outside of Nashville. The son of Johnny and June, Carter Cash was a producer on the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line and produced several records with his father as well as a Grammy Award winning record for June. Built by Johnny in 1979, this studio is where the country legend recorded much of his later work including his final recording, American V: A Hundred Highways, which was released posthumously and co-produced by Rick Rubin and John Carter. Robin had previously released “Everything Has Changed,” in Europe, with Hypertension Music based in Hamburg, Germany. Coupled with the strength of her growing European following and introduced to the German based label by friend and frequent touring partner Colin Hay (Men At Work), Robin signed a licensing and distribution deal with Hypertension for a Winter 2010 European release of Everything Has Changed. The company also did the booking for Robin throughout Europe and after the initial release in Europe, she secured a January 2010 tour with Midge Ure (Ultravox – co-organizer of Live Aid, Band Aid and Live 8). Janet enjoyed the experience of working with Cash so much that she returned this 2016 to record her latest studio effort "Take me as I am" again with John Carter Cash as executive producer and Chuck Turner producing and engineering: "We have talked at great length about this project and he understands my desire and vision to record an album that is representative of the energy brought out in my live performances," Robin says of John Carter Cash. "It’s just great to work with a producer that lets me be myself, yet brings out the best in my work. There weren’t many restraints working with John and the vibe and history at Cash Cabin is overwhelmingly inspiring. John seems to "get me." The official release for "Take me as I am" in the USA will be Oct. 17th, 2016 and the European/UK one will be in January 2017. She has since had several successful headlining tours in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, UK, and France where she plays solo acoustic shows, and with a her band, to sold out crowds in clubs (200-400 cap venues) and festivals (1,000's) across Europe. Janet recently finished a 34 date whirlwind summer tour in 5 countries in Europe, culminating with a featured solo performance at the renowned "Blues & Jazz Festival" in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. In addition to pursuing her solo career both in the U.S. and abroad, few musicians are able to work with the great variety of artists that Robin has been fortunate enough to be around. Besides the aforementioned Lindsey Buckingham, Robin has toured, performed with, recorded, or written songs with Tommy Emmanuel, Peppino D’Agostino, Meredith Brooks, Monty Montgomery, Michelle Shocked, Maia Sharp, Marcy Levy (co-writer with Eric Clapton on “Lay Down Sally”), Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart), Garrison Starr, Anne McCue and many more. Her most recent side-woman gig was the touring guitarist of Air Supply in 2009. In 2015, She was featured on the bill for the prestigious "All Star Guitar Night" which features some of the top guitar players in the world, during the LA NAMM convention. Touring nearly 150 dates a year with her own project, she has seen her solo career rise to higher and higher levels each year. Robin has also had songs placed in TV and films such as “One Life to Live,” “All my Children,” “Felicity,” “Free Enterprise,” and many more. She has also recently completed the original score for the short film “Traces” directed by Joseph Culp (actor Robert Culp’s son) and the film was accepted into the prestigious Palm Springs Short Film Festival and the Hollywood Film Awards, in June 2012. In January of 2015, Janet was also hand-picked to coach and consult actress Jennifer Jason Leigh for 2 months on location and in Los Angeles for a special guitar scene in the Quentin Tarantino film, "The Hateful Eight." The actress was nominated for an Academy Award. And in June/July of 2015 she was also hand picked for the guitar position in the musical "Girlfriend" to rave reviews at The Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, California. Along with Janet's busy solo career she has started a side project featuring 4 amazing guitar players- "The String Revolution." Combining 4 guitarists each with their own unique contribution to a "band" sound. They have finished their first release and it was mixed by the prestigious Matt Hyde in London who worked previously with famed guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela. The record was released Oct. 15, 2016 and touring dates to follow. However, one need not base their judgment on Robin solely on those with whom she has been associated. Only a listen to her albums or a ticket to one of her shows will prove the opening claim to be true. In this episode Gearoid chats to singer songwriter Marcella Detroit who is well-known for her solo records and her time in Shakespears Sister (sic). Before she was a recording artist in her own right she was also a respected songwriter, session singer and backing vocalist working with greats such as Aretha Franklin, Better Midler, Burt Bacharach, Belinda Carlisle and many more. She toured extensively with Eric Clapton and was responsible for some of his best loved songs (she co-wrote “Lay Down Sally” and more with him). Marcella chats about the highs and lows of Shakespears Sister. The heady period where they attained the longest-running number one for a female artist, a record still unbroken today, to the awards ceremony where it all imploded as they picked up a best album award. She ruminates on the changes in the music industry and her pride at producing her own records in her home studio and constantly reinventing her sound. She recalls the heady glamour days of lear-jets, live-aid and Elton John. The constant in all of that is her consistently brilliant music.
