Episode 2309: Michal Kosinski on the corrosive impact of social media on democracy and freedom

Keen On Democracy

The Stanford Business School professor Michal Kosinski has spent his career warning about the corrosive impact of technology, and particularly social media, on democratic institutions and individual freedom. The Polish born academic gained notoriety for his research at Cambridge University on how social media data could predict intimate personal traits. His work became particularly relevant during the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2016, leading to significant legal consequences for Facebook, including a $50 billion fine. In this KEEN ON conversation with Kosinski, recorded in Munich at DLD, he emphasizes that Facebook wasn't inherently malicious but failed to understand the full implications of their intrusive technology. Kosinksi connects social media's rise with the growth of populism, explaining how platforms enabled figures like Trump and even Bernie Sanders to bypass traditional political gatekeepers. Kosinski also discusses his controversial 2017 research showing that AI can predict personal characteristics, including sexual orientation, from facial features. On privacy, Kosinski believes that complete privacy protection may be impossible in the modern digital age. Instead, he advocates for building social and legal systems that make privacy invasions less dangerous. Looking to the future, Kosinski expresses short-term optimism about AI's potential to improve lives but long-term concern about the risks of artificial general intelligence (AGI). He notes that while we may see increased prosperity and advancement in the near future, the exponential acceleration of technological progress means long-term risks could materialize much sooner than expected.Michal Kosinski is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. His research interests encompass both human and artificial cognition. His current work centers on examining the psychological processes in Large Language Models and leveraging Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, and computational techniques to model and predict human behavior. He co-authored Handbook of Social Psychology and Modern Psychometrics, two popular textbooks, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in prominent journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature Computational Science, Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Machine Learning, and Scientific Reports, which have been cited over 22,000 times. He is among the Top 1% of the Highly Cited Researchers according to Clarivate. His research has inspired a cover of The Economist, a 2014 theatre production titled “Privacy,” several TED talks, and a video game. It has been featured in thousands of press articles, books, podcasts, and documentaries. He received a Rising Star award from the Association of Psychological Science (2015) and an Early Achievement Award from the European Association of Personality Psychology (2023). He was behind the first press article warning against Cambridge Analytica. His research exposed the privacy risks they exploited and assessed the effectiveness of their methods. More about his role in uncovering their actions can be found in Steven Levy's insightful book Facebook: The Inside Story and Sander van der Linden's article, “Weapons of Mass Persuasion.” He earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Cambridge and two master's degrees in psychometrics and social psychology. Before his current appointment, he held positions as a post-doctoral scholar in Stanford's Computer Science Department, Deputy Director of the University of Cambridge Psychometrics Centre, and a researcher in Microsoft Research's Machine Learning Group.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On is a reader-supported publication. CCP Weapons of Mass Persuasion

This paper is part of the Andrew W. Marshall Foundation's project on Examining History to Explore the Future: France, the United States, and China. This project was made possible by a generous grant from the Richard Lounsbery Foundation. Written by Jacqueline Deal and Eleanor Harvey Narrated by Patrick Kirchner The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP's) approach to the United States today reflects the party's formative competitive experiences a century ago. Starting in the 1920s, the CCP vied with the Nationalist Party (KMT) for control over China, but the CCP was also nominally allied with the KMT in the First United Front, 1924–27. In that context, the Communists waged political warfare against the KMT at the elite and the grassroots level. Initially, the CCP's aim was to coopt the KMT. When cooption failed, the Communists turned to subversion before attacking the Nationalists kinetically. In recent decades, the CCP has used this united-front template against the United States, thanks partly to a foundation of U.S.-CCP cooperation laid during the Sino-Japanese War and reinforced in the late Cold War. This report accordingly traces the CCP's repertoire for strategic competition to the Chinese Civil War (Part 1). It then analyzes the application of this toolkit to the United States across a series of interactions beginning in the late 1930s and continuing through the present (Part 2). The report concludes with two alternative visions of how the coming decades could unfold, hinging upon Washington's ability to counter Beijing's ongoing subversion campaign (Part 3). On today’s episode of Master Your Genius, Coach Keith welcomes Bill Morrison. Bill is an author, “emotional positioning consultant,” and long time friend of Keith’s. Bill has been in real estate since the 80’s selling pre-sale condos. In the last 30 years, he said he’s really refined how the sales and marketing process works. He left ReMax after 12 years to develop his own marketing firm. His book, Lions in the Grass, is a culmination of the lessons he’s learned throughout his time in real estate and marketing. Bill explains he had to learn how to write while writing the book.  Bill explains that because everyone is so busy these days, we’ve learned to triage our priorities. He explains that in emails with multiple questions, you often get none, so he recommends putting the questions needing an answer in the subject and P.S. sections of your email. As readers, we have a lower attention span so Bill stresses the important power of the headline and what makes a headline good or bad. We have to walk the line between the thirst for positive headlines and human nature to triage priorities. He recommends balancing a negative headline with a positive subheader to grab the reader and leave them with a positive feeling.  Next, Coach Keith and Bill discuss the decision making process. The reasoning behind decision making is in part logic covering for emotional decisions. The logic we use to justify our choices hides the emotion in the back of our brain. In his book, Bill brings up manipulation from the beginning. It’s a word that brings up a lot of emotion for folks, which is why Bill says he loves it. To help illustrate his point, Bill uses a poignant example of getting a loved one to stop smoking.  If money didn’t matter, Bill says he wished his book was in everyone’s hands because he thinks it is incredibly important people know the truth. The truth is they’re making an emotional decision manipulated by marketers. The danger, Bill explains, is not in being manipulated into buying soap, or electronics, but rather in mass manipulation. He suggests we’re making critically hasty decisions. His book encourages readers to become emotional revolutionaries. Suppressed emotions, Coach Keith suggests become like caked mud in the body, and you begin making all your decisions out of that place without even realizing it.  Bill breaks down the emotional manipulation used by Donald Trump in the 2016 election. He spoke in short memorable soundbites that allowed people to rally around a common enemy and imagine Trump as the hero against that villain. Bill explains he did that largely by never giving a lot of detail, and Coach Keith agrees that this is a great sales tactic. Keith says great salespeople listen first, and ask great questions. If you understand the true core of decision making, you can make safer, more sound choices - from what you buy to how you’ll be casting your vote. As the episode ends, Coach Keith asks Bill what he learned while writing the book. Bill reiterates that he had to learn to write during the process of writing the book. He also adds that he learned that you can accomplish big goals if you set them and work toward them everyday. He and Coach Keith agree that another lesson is in learning to be comfortable in vulnerability.  Timestamps:  [:18] - Coach Keith introduces today’s guest, Bill Morrison.  [2:22] - Bill shares his background.  [9:42] - Bill explains the way we triage our priorities.  [15:38] - Bill covers the power of a good headline.  [20:54] - Coach Keith and Bill discuss decision making.  [24:43] - Bill explains the power of manipulation.  [34:25] - Coach Keith asks Bill what he hopes people get out of his book. New York University professor Mark Crispin Miller simply asked his students to do research on masking before they believed the narrative of the mainstream media. After all, he was teaching a class called "Mass Persuasion and Propaganda." The very idea of the class is to foster recognition of the tools of persuasion and propaganda that are a daily part of the students' society, culture, and news media. For this, one student reported Miller to the administration, demanding, on Twitter, that he be fired. This is not the first time Miller has been called before an NYU board, as you will hear on this episode of "The Midnight Writer News Show." Miller joins S.T. Patrick to discuss the controversy, the efficacy of masking, the devolution of the left, the failures of the media, and much more. Have you ever wondered how the art of persuasion works? In this week's episode, as we continue our series on mass movements, I am going to discuss a few techniques and tactics people use to persuade other people into taking action. To be clear, persuasion is neither good or bad, it is simply the process of convincing someone to do or believe something. However, people (both good and bad) will use the same persuasive techniques to convince others to head down a certain path (both good and bad). So in this episode, I will discuss FIVE common persuasion tactics people use so that you can better spot them in your day-to-day life. Enjoy the show Matt ________ Download your FREE Meditation

You’ve been at top of our list actually. We’ve wanted to have you on the podcast for a while. So glad you are finally here. And Bushra, a great place to start is just with your story, especially for anyone who has not heard of you before. How did you end up running your business, and copywriting, and persuasion? Bushra:  Oh, okay. So first off all, thank you so much. It’s a funny, funny note that I will tell, which I will think, it is probably... like I’m making a massive boo-boo in front of all the copywriters community, but I have to say this: you just introduced me, and you said “copywriter”, and the thing is, I don’t identify myself as a copywriter, because I have never taken any copywriter training. And, when I started my business, I wasn’t really sure which copywriting was which. So it the w-r-i-t-e, or is the r-i-g-h-t? Kira:  Laughs. Rob:  Laughs. Bushra:  And I said okay, which is which? I just knew that I’m good at using words to make a sales argument. That’s something that I’ve always done. That has always been my strength. But I never really thought there was a need for something like this,

In 2012, thousands of progressives and independents registered as Republicans to support Ron Paul and ended up becoming the largest coalition of his campaign. How in the world did that happen?? It all started with a Huffington Post article by today’s guest, Robin Koerner, who challenged people who love peace to become a “Blue Republican,” just for a year — and the rest is history. But a lot has changed since then, and if we want to get those Blue Republicans and other liberty-curious voters back on our side, we need to understand why we lost them in the first place. So here’s what you’ll learn in this episode of Leading Liberty: What a “Blue Republican” is, what they want, and why it matters   A 2-word sentence starter to help change hearts and minds in political writing   What Trump, Ron Paul, and Bernie Sanders have in common that made them so popular   How we can win back the Ron Paul supporters who defected to Donald Trump   The most important psychology fundamental we need to understand to be more persuasive communicators   And lots more! So on that note, let’s dive into the interview.
