"Incident" examines the 2018 shooting of Harith "Snoop" Augustus by Chicago police officer Dillan Halley through a series of bodycam and surveillance footage montages. The film reconstructs the incident and its aftermath by piecing together perspectives from multiple sources—such as surveillance cameras, CCTV, dashboard cams, and body-worn cameras—into a synchronized split-screen presentation. Director Bill Morrison & Producer Jamie Kalven were kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film which you can listen to below. Rounding out our coverage of the 2025 Academy Award nominees, we are joined by producers Bill Morrison (“Decasia”, “The Dockworker's Dream”, Dawson City: Frozen Time) and Jamie Kalven (of the Invisible Institute) to discuss their Oscar-nominated short, “Incident,” which depicts the police shooting of Harith “Snoop” Augustus and it's immediate aftermath from several angles.     Using body camera and other footage (and only that footage) that the Chicago Police–as required by law, one that Jamie had advocated for in the wake of the coverup of the shooting of Laquan McDonald–Bill has crafted a film which draws upon editing skills built through years of working with archival material, but one which is significantly more immediate and urgent than his previously beautiful and implicitly philosophically profound works.  What we witness is two narratives being formed about what happened, and to whom:  One from the police, the other from the Southside Chicago community that witnessed the events.  And we can see at work the deep causes of what happened embedded in American gun culture and the resulting police policies and practices.   “Incident” can be seen on the New Yorker Website.   Follow: @emaexplorations on Instagram and X @topdocspod on Instagram and X    The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Longtime Simpsons Comics writer and artist Bill Morrison joins us for the show this week to talk about his new collection of The Complete Roswell Little Green Man, funding now on Zoop! We also talk about his unusual journey into comics, what he considers his art style, and much more!

Jace chats with the super talented Bill Morrison about his Zoop campaign for The Complete Adventures of Roswell, Little Green Man. You may know Bill's work from the longest running TV series of all-time, The Simpsons. He also had a hand in the creation and production of Futurama, and served as creative director for Bongo comics. It was during his time at Bongo that he created the series Roswell. A timeless series about the original Roswell alien who survived the crash, it is a humorous fish-out-of-water title with wacky supporting characters and classic art from Bill himself. For the first time ever, all the previous Roswell issues are being collected in one volume with some never before seen art from Bill and other artists. Filmmaker Bill Morrison, whose work explores found and often decayed film footage, discusses his work and the nature of memory when contained in found footage. Broadly describable as documentary films, Bill's works have a hypnotic quality (his production company is even called Hypnotic Pictures!), which feature footage both from fiction and documentary films as well as home movies, scientific documentations and more. He recently collaborated with composer David Lang on the short film Let Me Come In for LA Opera as well as the feature film The Village Detective: A Song Cycle. His feature Decasia (in collaboration with composer Michael Gordon) was the first film of the 21st century to be entered into the Library Of Congress National Film Registry and his work consistently transcends the boundaries of the term "experimental", winning over audiences around the world.

Jeepers! We're back with part TWO of our deep dive into Bongo Comics' "Radioactive Man" series. In the 1990s, at the height of "The Simpsons'" popularity, Bongo Comics decided to bring Bart Simpson's favourite superhero, Radioactive Man, to life! The series was written by Steve Vance (who also did layouts), with finished art by Bill Morrison and co-plotting/colours by Cindy Vance.  Each issue jumps around in the fictional history of Radioactive Man and in this episode we examine the last four issues:  #216 (from 1972), #412 (from 1980), #679 (from 1986) and #1,000 (from 1995). Each issue is PACKED with homages to/parodies of superhero comics, background jokes and references to "The Simpsons." There's so much thought and care put into each and every panel. This is one of Matt's all-time favourite series, but at the start of our first episode, Cale wasn't as excited about the book. Will Matt's enthusiasm lead to more appreciation from Cale? You'll have to listen to find out!  We will be back in two weeks for "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. A re-telling of Batman's origin, this graphic novel is set in the same universe as Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" (make sure you listen to our 10th episode) and re-teams him with his "Daredevil: Born Again" collaborator (so make sure you listen to our 8th episode as well)! Our comic aficionados celebrate 20 episodes with a deep dive into one of Matt's (and Bart Simpson's) favourite comic: "Radioactive Man"!  A spin-off of "The Simpsons," this six-part limited series was published from 1993 to 1994 by Bongo Comics. Radioactive Man is a love letter/parody/deconstruction/celebration of superhero comics, jumping between time periods from issue to issue. And in classic "Simpsons" style, it's hilarious! We had so much to say about this series (by Steve & Cindy Vance and Bill Morrison) that this is our second ever two-part episode!  In part one, we will discuss the characters and the first two issues in depth (Issue #1 from 1952 and Issue #88 from 1962). We were lucky enough to speak with him then about the film and its inception. This time around, Morrison has a short film called let me come in, which is having its world broadcast premiere as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival on May 7th. let me come in re-purposes footage from the lost 1928 silent film Pawns of Passion with the entrancing touch that only Morrison can employ, accompanied by a new song by composer David Lang and performed by soprano Angel Blue. We discuss the new film with Morrison, the negative review Pawns of Passion actually got from The New York Times back in 1929 (!), and his upcoming film The Village Detective: A Song Cycle, which just recently premiered at the Moscow International Film Festival. Both of the guys are huge Beatles fans, and you can tell how excited they are in discussing these texts. They begin with David Foenkinos, Corbeyran, and Horne's Lennon: The New York Years(IDW Publishing), adapted from Foenkinos prose work on John Lennon. What makes this book stand out is that it's primarily narrated in the first person through imagined therapy sessions that Lennon undergoes. In this way, the text becomes not only an insight into John Lennon's psyche, but also a broad historical overview of The Beatles as a musical phenomenon. After that they jump into Bill Morrison's recent adaptation of Yellow Submarine(Titan Comics). This is a work that is as colorful and as elaborate as the 1968 animated film, and the guys are impressed by how faithful the book is to the film's plot. The only thing you don't get in Morrison's text is the various musical interludes that you have in the animated film (of course), but even then Morrison does an affective job of implying the music as sort of a silent soundtrack. But all of the surreal visuals, the song references, and the many puns are there. Next, they look at a new book just released through NBM, The Beatles in Comics. This is a collection of short essays and comics written by Michel Mabel and Gaet's, and with illustrations by a variety of artists. Much like Lennon, this book provides a broad overview of The Beatles, and the chapters cover such topics as their time in Hamburg, Brian Epstein, when they met the queen, their playing Shea Stadium, the Ed Sullivan Show, the genesis of "Yesterday," their decision to stop touring, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, their time in India, Yoko Ono, the Paul Is Dead phenomenon, and the breakup of the band. Finally, they discuss a new book that really isn't about The Beatles, but uses the Fab Four as a significant backdrop. M. Dean's I Am Young(Fantagraphics) is a series of stories about relationships and music, and the main storyline is the one that uses The Beatles. It's the history of a relationship between Miriam and George, two young people who meet at a Beatles concert when the band first hit it big. M. Dean takes us through the course of this relationship, doing so with The Beatles as a nexus, with the two growing older and getting together, and growing apart, as The Beatles themselves mature and evolve. One book that the Sterg and Derek do not discuss, but one they nonetheless highly recommend, is Carol Tyler's Fab4 Mania(Fantagraphics). This work was released earlier this year, and the reason the guys don't include it in their comics about The Beatles coverage is that Gene and Derek interviewed Carol back in July. As such, they spent a lot of time discussing that book, so the guys already focused on that text. Still, it's another recent graphic novel about The Beatles, and it should stand alongside the other works that Sterg and Derek discuss in this episode.
