The pasuk says in Shir HaShirim, לסוסתי ברכבי פרעה דמיתיך רעיתי – we, Hashem's beloved, are being compared in some way to the horses that Hashem used to drive the Egyptian riders of Pharaoh's army into the Yam Suf . Rav Chaim Volozhiner explained the comparison as follows, just like at that time, instead of the normal way of a rider controlling the horse, it was the horses who controlled the riders, as Chazal teach us, Hashem made the waves of the Yam Suf appear to be female horses and the male horses, with the riders upon them, charged forward, against the rider's will. So too it says about Hashem. He is the רוכב שמים , he is called the Rider of Heaven. Yet, He gives us, His beloved People, the ability kavayachol to be in control of how He acts. How do we exercise this control? Through our good deeds and prayers. We have the ability to shorten the length of a decree, to change a certain destiny, or to bring down an abundance of undeserved blessing. And this is the explanation of the pasuk רוכב שמים בעזרך– Hashem rides the Heavens, but He does it with our help. We help Him determine how He is going to act. This is also the meaning of the pasuk תנו עוז לאלוקים – we give Hashem strength, through our tefilot and good deeds, to overturn decrees and bring blessings upon us. Our deeds are so precious and Hashem uses them as the catalysts to give us beracha. A man told me that he has a daughter who has been dating for several years and still has not found the zivug that Hashem has in store for her. A couple of months ago, a friend of his lost a child who was not well and they did not have a place to sit shiva , as their apartment was way too small. They didn't have any immediate relatives either with bigger homes available to them. It was a very sad situation and this man was discussing it with his wife. His wife suggested that they open their home to host the shiva there. The man was very happy to call his friend and tell him that he would be able to use his house. The friend and his wife were overcome with gratitude for this very heartwarming gesture, willing to open their home for an entire week, around the clock, to have total strangers walk in and out at all hours of the day. During the shiva , the bereaved parents made a point of telling every visitor of how much hakarat hatov they have to their hosts who opened their home to them. The mother who was sitting knew how hard her hosts were trying to find a shidduch for their daughter, and so she also made a point to tell the visitors about how special a girl she was and what an outstanding family she came from. One of the days, a woman from another city about an hour and a half drive from them came to visit and she was told about this wonderful girl looking for a shidduch . She was very pleased with the report she was hearing about her and she was also impressed seeing her in action at the shiva home. This woman has a son of marriageable age and after some investigating on both sides, a meeting was set up between the two. About a week ago, this couple became engaged. The parents of the girl had no idea this boy even existed. How were they going to find him? We don't know the plans of Hashem and when He was going to allow them to discover him, but it is clear that through their great act of chesed , they gave strength kavayachol to Hahsem to bring them their salvation immediately. Our deeds are so powerful and the harder they are to perform, the more valuable they become. Hashem gives us the ability kavayachol to control what He does. The more tefilot and ma'asim tovim that we do, the more strength we give Hashem to help us.

If that's the case, what's the secret to taming our tongue? How do we do it? The answer he gives is startling, yet freeing: "No person can tame the tongue", in other words, we can't- but "every good and perfect gift comes from above." So, even though you can't tame your tongue, when God has the reins, HE CAN!

Enjoy!     *     *    * A horse suddenly came galloping quickly down the road. It seemed as though the man had somewhere important to go. Another man, who was standing alongside the road, shouted, “Where are you going?” and the man on the horse replied, “I don't know! Ask the horse!” This is a Zen story that points to our powerful our habit-energy. We have done it this way all of our lives, so that's how we continue. We are busy and we hurry because that's the way life is. We have to be perfect, not accepting our humanity, because that's how we grew up. We threaten our kids with punishment because that's how our parents did it. The horse of our habitual living is taking us places that we don't want to go – busy-ness, feeling never good-enough, having hostile relationships with our kids. If you stopped to ask from time to time why, sometimes you might have an answer, but it's never a very good one. You're just used to it, it's how we're taught to live. But as much as we run, it gets us nowhere.
