Shakespeare's plays mention horses over 300 times across his works, reflecting the huge place in the every day lives of people that this animal occupied. For something that was so essential for travel and for work, it makes sense that a horse owner would want to make sure their horse received the best of care. The art of horse doctoring in the 16th century generally fell under the purview of the blacksmith, who was responsible for the horse shoeing. The word for practicing medicine on animals for the medieval period was known as “marshalcy” in English, and it comes from the word “menescalia” in Catalan. Today, they are best known as farriers. Our guest this week, Carmel Ferragud, is an expert in the history of veterinarian medicine and specifically the history of Marshalcy. Today he joins us to discuss the activities of the 16th century farrier, what kind of medical care was available for animals in the 16-17th century, and exactly what veterinarian medicine would have been like for Shakespeare's lifetime.   Get bonus episodes on Patreon Hosted on Acast. How can a horse owner/rider get all these experts working together. Why is the farrier industry in decline, and what are the problems, causes and concerns for the industry? And what are the price differences between shoeing a horse in the UK and abroad? Farriers are being forced to shoe high numbers in the UK, and this is having a detrimental effect on their bodies, and they are struggling to make ends meet. They even discuss barefoot and why this topic is so divisive, and really it should be about welfare and what is best for the horse at that point in their life given; breed, age, condition, care, sport and whether it actually benefits them or not! You'll be able to watch the interview video here on Animalweb or listen to the podcast. -----------------------------------------To find out more about becoming a member >>> AskAnimalweb.comNot a Member? Welcome, everyone.  Well, I'm about at the midpoint of my English farrier tour, had a great time at Focus and The International, and got a lot of fantastic interviews done. Stay tuned for those. As it goes at that type of event, I had a lot of fun and interesting conversations with fellow farriers, both on and off the mic. My esteemed tour guide, Danny Bennett, took me with him to Hereford College and I got to spend some time with the students in the Forge and the classroom. It's hard not to be envious of the facility and the program that they get to attend there.  As an added bonus, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, was visiting the college at the same time and I got to meet and converse with him on his tour of the Forge.  It doesn't get more British than that.  For those who haven't heard Danny's episode with me on the Lockdown Farriery podcast, I'm sticking around England for a little longer to attempt the associate exam of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. I've been prepping for it for a few years now. But this year, I've been focusing a lot of effort on it. With multiple trips down to the Heartland to get lots of help from Chris and Cody, and then attending a Jonathan Nunn clinic down there as well. I was also fortunate enough to get Danny to fly over to Canada for some of his tutelage as well. I can't emphasize enough how much going through the process of pursuing certification and higher level exams has done for me. It's the challenge, the learning, the progress, and it's the people.  I have had so many people offer me help, insights, and tools in big ways and small.  The Farrier family is a real thing, and they go out of their way to help you out when you show some effort and keenness to learn. Thank you to everyone who has helped me out on this journey. There are way too many of you to name, but all of your help has been appreciated. All of this is a great segue into my conversation with today's guest, an examiner for the AFA, David Sierra. David and I met on Vern Powell's Puerto  Vallarta trip, where many of the farriers down there in Mexico were taking their AFA exams. Ask anyone about David Sierra in the farrier world, and they all have nothing but kind words and praise. After finally getting to meet him myself, I understand why. David Gulley FWCF  On the 2nd of May 2024 we received the sad news of the passing of David Gulley FWCF.Born on the 4th of August 1939 in Plymouth Devon, David grew up with an obsession for horses, his mother once telling him of his fascination of the Shire horses working in the streets Plymouth. When David reached the age of 15 due to the lack of farriery apprenticeships being available due to mechanisation, David took on a 4-year apprenticeship in Blacksmithing and Engineering. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1960 he was called up for National Service into the British Army. As he signed up, he asked about the possibility of being an Army Farrier, of which the ill-informed Army recruiting Sergeant replied, “there was not such a thing anymore”. David then opted to become a Driver. Whilst in basic training Davids unit was visited by a recruiting officer from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC), looking for recruits. David asked the officer did they have Farriers? The officer replied “yes”. At that point David told the officer that if he could transfer to the forge, he would instantly sign up for 22 years' service, the maximum engagement you can sign up for. In late 1960 David moved to Melton Mowbray and started working at the Remount Depot, now known as the Defence Animal Training Regiment, and started his life as an Army Farrier Apprentice at the old Army School of Farriery (ASF). Coincidently David joined the school 1 day after another farriery legend and lifelong friend David “Slim” Symons FWCF (hons). David was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of Jock Green a very well-regarded Army farrier instructor who pushed David to excel through hard work and determination. David managed to achieve the uncompressible feat of becoming a B1 Army farriery instructor and the rank of full Corporal in under 2 years. After 9 years of being based at the ASF teaching and competing David took the decision to leave the army and set up his own business. These were the days pre regulation, which would not become an act of parliament for a few years. At the time there was a lack of good farriers in the Leicestershire area servicing the fledgling equine leisure industry, with many untrained farriers cold shoeing applying shoes poorly. David was lucky enough to get the opportunity to repurpose a disused cattle shed into a forge, which is where he remained for the rest of his life in Thorpe Satchville, Leicestershire with his partner Judy. It wasn't long before David had built a busy business and the requirement for more manpower, so started his long list of successful apprentices. The first of which was Andrew Speck RSS, which went on to include the likes of Cecil Swan, Gary Darlow, Kevin Green, Joe Bryan and Andrew James. He went on to train 24 apprentices in total and was always proud of the achievements of all he trained and had said countless times that his proudest achievement was training his own son Micheal. On retirement he was presented a “Family Tree”, by some of his ex-apprentices, starting with David, his apprentices, their apprentices and so on. To this date there are 5 generations of farriers with lineage back to David, over time this will grow and will remain one of Davids Legacies.  After leaving the Army David's involvement with the National Association of Farriers, Blacksmiths and Agricultural Engineers (now known as BFBA) began. Joining his local branch, Leicestershire, David became an active member and very quickly rising to the position of chairman. With the registration act looming on the horizon, David was proactive in putting on training and testing for farriers in the area to achieve their Registered Shoeing Smiths (RSS) exams. In Davids own words this was all about trying to make farriers better. David always held horse welfare as the most important part of farriery. He went on to sit t

Jonathan Nunn, FWCF, has been a good friend for a good long time. We competed against each other in farrier contests many times over the years and shared some great times in different parts of the world as we both pursued our dreams of becoming a better farrier.  When Cody was 17 years old and chasing his associateship with the Worshipful Company of Farriers, he spent quite a bit of time with Jon in England. John is now an examiner for the Worship Company of Ferriers and was in the Heartland for a few days doing a high level clinic for my son Cody, Emilio Giannotti, Brian Mullins, and several others as they pursue their fellowship or associateship exams. This week's guest can school us on a lot of things to become a successful, professional farrier- Bob Pethick. Bob has shod horses professionally for over 50 years and not only just regular type horses, high dollar, high stress, top level sport horses that compete at the highest level for the United States Equestrian Team for nearly his whole career. He had it set in his mind from day 1 of starting his career that he wanted to shoe the highest level caliber horses and made that happen for over 37 years now. That just blows my mind to be honest! I think that speaks volumes about the quality of work Bob commits to every day and also Bob's character for being able to maintain those relationships for that long. All the while he was able to do this, Bob competed at the highest level and was selected to become a member of the North American Horseshoeing Team 2 times and also earning a spot on the American Farriers Team 5 times and those years were with some of the more well known guys in our industry like Jim Poor, Craig Trnka, Shayne Carter and many other badasses! Amongst many other accolades and accomplishments Bob has earned, Bob was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2006. I think there's a lot to be gained by sitting down and listening to a guy like Bob talk and soak up the knowledge he has to share. Enjoy the episode! Shoes are fashionable, whether they're for humans or horses. And There was a time when every community had a blacksmith, and their work was focused on utility.  Today's blacksmith's still focus on utility and function, but there's also a certain art to what they do.  Farriers, the modern-day equivalent of historical blacksmiths, now focus primarily on the craft of horseshoeing. This transition from the all-encompassing role of the blacksmith to the specialized expertise of the farrier marks a significant shift in the industry. Craig Turnka, a seasoned veteran with 40 years of experience in horse shoeing, sheds light on the evolution of blacksmithing.  "The blacksmith was all-encompassing with agriculture, making plows and various tools essential for farming," says Turnka. "But with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the decline of horses as primary beasts of burden, ferriering emerged as a specialized art."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And don't forget to enter Mullins as the discount code at checkout.  This episode is being released just after hosting my good friend Cody Gregory for a one-day forging clinic at Andrew DeVisser's shop in Paris, Ontario and then a two-day whole horse dissection at the McKee-Pownall Clinic in Schomburg, Ontario. As usual, Cody knocked it out of the park with both clinics. Cody is the king of full immersion, and Equine Anatomy has been one of his deep dives. About 40 whole horse dissections later, he has teaching it down to an art. If you're interested in setting up one for your own association or group, I would highly recommend reaching out to him. Go to  www.codygregoryllc.com and send him a message through his site. Today's interview comes from my time spent at Stoneleigh this year, and we've released it first in the queue of many interviews I did there because of its topical nature. You may recognize Tom Smith's voice from the episode I did with the Farriers Registration Council last year. As the chair of the council, Tom has a unique perspective on the controversy surrounding the diploma and higher-level exams in England through the Worshipful Company of Farriers.  I would highly recommend that you listen to both the FRC and the Worshipful Company episodes. If you're not familiar with the organizations and the jobs that they fulfill for farriery in England,  then to make you do even more homework, I would point you to the BFBA's website at www.forgeandfarrier.co.uk and search for the press releases on the farriery endpoint assessment updates under the latest news tab. I feel like with this little bit of leg work, you will have a much better understanding of the situation.   Ever since meeting Tom last year, I wanted to sit down with him and understand why he took the often thankless position he has with the FRC and what his journey to become an FWCF was like. After our relatively brief first encounter, my instincts told me that he was going to be an inspiring guest and as you will hear, he did not disappoint. Thoughtful, driven, and not afraid to tackle the hard things, Tom has accomplished many impressive goals.  You'll even hear us get a little choked up about our respective truck dogs who recently passed.  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Let me proudly introduce to you Ben Benson. I knew Ben only by reputation before this interview. He and I both did clinics in Brazil for the same farriers out there, so I had heard his name and I knew of his reputation.  When I was asked to speak at the BFBA, which is the British Farrier and Blacksmith Association Annual Farrier Focus in Stoneleigh for 2023, I got the chance to know Ben a little bit better. Now, there's a lot going on in the UK farriery at the moment, and so I thought this interview would be a very timely thing. As an associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, which is AWCF, I knew before I sat down with Ben that he was going to be skilled. He is the president of the BFBA and a superbly talented, overachieving farrier. English trained, but growing up on the west coast of Wales, Ben is a second-generation farrier that shoes for Olympic riders in some of the biggest equestrian events in the world.  You're going to truly enjoy hearing about being a modern farrier in the UK and some of what is happening in our great trade as you get to know Ben Benson.  For more information about Chris Gregory CJF ASF FWCF: https://chrisgregoryauthor.com/ https://www.heartlandhorseshoeing.com/

As you will hear, it all goes to a very important cause. You will hear me say that there aren't any organizations like this in North America and that isn't completely true. The International Association of Professional Farriers has a program set up for their members, where if somebody gets hurt, a group of their members get together and help them take care of the horses on their books. It's a different program, but it has a similar end result. There may be similar programs throughout North America that I'm not familiar with, and if so, please reach out on social media and let me know about them. I know in my area, it has always been a very spontaneous thing, but there never seems to be a lack of farriers willing to help each other out, a fact that makes me very proud to be part of this profession. Anyway, this is yet another episode where Danny Bennett and I teamed up to do the interview. Welcome everyone.  I'm coming to you from down in the Heartland where I just spent a week with my fellow farriers learning all we could from Chris and Cody and a special guest, Emilio Giannotti. As always, I met so many great folks down here, made some new friends, and got to hang out with some old ones. The blacksmith workshop that we just finished attending here is a very neat and unique course where you've got students who are just starting out on their farrier journey and have never used a forge or struck a piece of steel, and then you have seasoned farriers wanting to get better in their day to day or start their certification journey. It never ceases to amaze me how Chris and Cody can teach all of those skill levels in the same place and keep it interesting and challenging for all of us. It seems every time I speak to somebody who's come here after years of me recommending it, one of the first things they say just a few days in is "I've gotta come back here".  The conversation you're about to hear took place once again across the pond on my trip over to Stoneleigh. If you're in North America, this particular organization might not be very familiar to you, and if you're from England, It might be familiar to you, but you might not completely understand what it is that they do. This was another conversation I recorded with Danny Bennett of the Lockdown Farriery Podcast, and ever since we recorded it, he has been pushing for me to release it so the folks over in his country could understand how integral the FRC is in the role of the farrier organizations over there. As you will hear, the three gentlemen that we interviewed representing The Farriers Registration Council (FRC) really take their jobs seriously and are passionate about what they do. I found it really informative and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. The Farriers Registration Council (FRC) is a corporate body established under the Farriers (Registration) Act 1975. Our vision is the "Prevention and avoidance of suffering by equines through ensuring that equine owners are able to access the equine hoof-care that best meets their needs in a timely and assured manner; this care will be delivered only by those capable and qualified to do so." https://www.farrier-reg.gov.uk/  Support the show: https://ko-fi.com/mullinsfarrierpodcast Become a sponsor: https://mullinsfarrier.com/contact/ Become a Guest: https://mullinsfarrier.com/become-a-guest/

We were fortunate to have Iain Ritchie and John Dixon come down south from Canada while we were having a team practice for the upcoming WCB contest "The Classic" to share their knowledge and criticism for us to become better prepared as a team. Top notch guys to lend their time out of their busy schedules to just to come help us! Says a lot about who they are, as respectable men. So thank you for that Iain and John. Of course since we had them here in our presence, we had to do a podcast with them. Getting to hear Iain's story about how and why he moved from Scotland to Canada was really cool to hear, amongst other topics discussed in this episode that you'll have to tune in to hear. John is a multi-generational farrier who grew up learning how to shoe horses from his dad, Steve Dixon" primarily and then also working for Iain for many years too. They've both been on the Canadian Farriers Team multiple times as well, and was neat to hear how that process is to qualify for that team. There's multiple times in this episode that we almost fell out of our chairs laughing so hard at John's sense of humor and jokes!

This week the podcast welcomes a truly inspirational man and iconic carp angler in the shape of the lovable character that is Ina “Chilly” Chillcott.WARNING! This podcast is a real emotional roller-coaster so be prepared for tears as well as plenty of laughter and epic story telling! Chilly takes us all the way back to his paratrooper days sharing funny stories and describing how he even from frankly scary young aged always wanted to jump from the sky. His para days took him all over the world into various hostile environments and in contact with some pretty menacing characters but throughout it all his love for fishing and carp angling in particular blossomed.Moving onto his incredible “early days” carp angling exploits on the likes of Horton, Yateley Car Park Lake, Wraysbury and Farriers to name but a few, which include the captures of infamous carp such as “Jack The Net Ripper”, “The Dustbin” and a host of epic big commons. Chilly shares his experiences in terms of his angling and how his friendships blossomed with fellow anglers such as Dave Lane etc. His success in his angling also led him to contribute to written angling media a lot as well as him being involved working in the industry with Fox International. Chilly talks openly about how his angling progressed overtime and how his involvement within the trade change up until one faithful day where his life changed. The life changing event was the discovery of a life threatening brain tumour. He describes in a raw unedited way how he came to undergo and pull through a very intense surgery and how his recovery has changed him as a person as well as his angling. It's a truly inspirational and confronting tale of how incredible the human mind came be but also how fragile life is. Throughout it all Chilly has always had angling to “Light His Fire” and this fire is burning away brighter than ever as he continues to chase his carp fishing dreams.Chilly rounds of his podcast by thanking significant people who have helped him recover as well as talking about his prognosis for his future and what that looks like with a very surprising but exciting development. There's one thing for sure you cannot fail but to truly admire the man, despite everything he has battled and continues to fight his drive, determination and shear stubbornness combined with his love for carp fishing means that he is still out there catching incredible carp and will continue to do so for as long as he can!

In this new series of talks, I talk to the farriers who have done real research in to farriery, whilst doing higher exams. As part of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, Fellowship (FWCF) exam you have to produce a thesis on a subject of your choice relevant to farriery. One of the biggest problems with science and farriery is when published it is hard to understand to those who have not been involved in scientific research. So in this new series I sit down with these people at the top of their game and we have a "down to earth" chat about their research and ask the questions we all want to know.Today I talk to Mark Trussler FWCF, who when he got to the end of his AWCF journey, decided to carry it on to the FWCF. Mark's Thesis looks at "Laterally Offset Hoof Capsules and their Effect Upon the Medial Hoof". A must listen for any equine body workers out there, and for horse lovers interested in learning more about how their horses bodies work. Scroll down the page for all the resources shared - I definitely have some new books on my wish list!  Tami started her equine therapy journey with the Masterson Method and worked her way through certification, and then continued her training with all four levels of Equine CranioScaral through the Upledger institute. As she finds new tools and gathers more knowledge, she feels able to better treat and help horses. She has recently started a new journey as an equine osteopath through the Vluggen Institute. From Tami: I believe that therapists need empathy, humility and an open mind. I believe it takes a village to keep our equine partners healthy and happy. I feel there is not enough collaboration in the equine world between Veterinarians, Farriers, Dentists, Chiropractors and Therapists. I believe in spreading knowledge and sharing information so that each horse can have a better life. It is important for me that each one of my clients understands that each horse I treat becomes part of my herd; each horse gives as much as it receives. Therefore they are family. In today's episode we talk to internationally acclaimed farrier and teacher, Alan Bailey of England. Alan Bailey began shoeing in 1963. He comes from a long line of farriers and blacksmiths. In 1978, he went to teach at the Hereford College. There, Alan became well-known for his teaching method; especially of anatomy and physiology. He is responsible for raising the standard of excellence in the farrier training exams at the Hereford College. Because Alan demanded such a high standard of his students, he has the unique distinction, as a teacher, of never having had a student fail. He is still affectionately remembered by many of his former students. They appreciate that he expected so much and he never gave up on them. In 1988, Alan left the school to become the liaison officer for the Farrier Registration Council of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. He went to Louisville, KY and gave a presentation at the Laminitis Symposium in January of 1989. After that, he became popular on the international lecture circuit. He has spoken at many seminars and clinics all over the world (including eastern and western Australia, Tasmania, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, etc.). He was in high demand for his outstanding teaching style. Alan retired from international lecturing having realized the limitations of his practical know-how, and returned to horse shoeing and veterinary technical consultant work. He revisited the traditional methods as taught in the United Kingdom, relearned horse shoeing to the benefit of the horse, and how not to follow a method determined by history and practiced by the indoctrinated. He suggests that 'the methods subsequently learned and used in his everyday shoeing would now raise awareness of the farriers responsibility to the functionality of the animal. Alan retired from shoeing horses in 2016. Alan shares some of his experiences with running a shoeing practice, working with veterinarians, his friendship with Dr. Doug Butler, and his experiences teaching at the Hereford College in England.     If you would like to contact us with questions relating to your business, specific cases, general horse hoof care questions, or suggestions for future podcasts, please email us at farrierfocuspodcast@gmail.com. Recently, there have been some confirmed cases of these diseases in horses in the United States. Learn more about what these and other diseases can do to horses and what can be done to prevent them. Farriers should not vaccinate or deworm horses that they trim and/or shoe. Veterinarians are responsible for administering vaccinations and dewormers. Today I’m speaking with Cody Gregory. Cody has been one of my most influential teachers since I have been attending Heartland Horseshoeing School. We have this unusual dynamic where he is considerably younger than I am, yet I very much look up to him. Just like his Father, he has become an inspiring role model for me. Cody trimmed his first pony and made his first shoe when he was four, and shod his first horse all around when he was eight. He became the youngest Certified farrier with the AFA at the age of 14 and the youngest CJF at the age of 15. Later, at the age of 19, he became an Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. An avid competitor, Cody won his first belt buckle at the age of 6. He was the alternate on the American Farrier’s Team in 2012 and won first place in the International Alternates Class in Stoneleigh that year. From 2013 to 2015 he earned a spot on the World Championship Blacksmith team where they won the world title in 2015 and he was the WCB national champion in 2014. Cody was also the top placing American at the World Championship Blacksmiths Competition in 2013. Just as you will hear him say in the interview, Cody’s brain doesn’t work the same way as other people’s do. When he says that, it’s not to be pretentious, its just a fact.  His ideas come fast and frequently, but if you can keep up with him, the insights you gain through his philosophies on shoeing and learning are fruitful. I especially liked his concept of “getting to the point that you are ready to ask the right question”. I hope you learn as much as I did in this interview. So let’s get to it…

With each accomplishment, he takes the opportunity to pass on what he has learned. Chris has been a professional horseshoer since 1987. He has been a member of the American Farrier’s Team, competed 18 times at the world championships Blacksmith Competition in Calgary and has been in the top ten at that contest. He earned his CJF from the AFA in 1991 and the title of Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers at the age of 30. He is also the first American to be an examiner for a WCF exam.  Chris is the creator of the FITS farrier exam system that has been adopted in Brazil, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and in North America as well. 1000’s of students have graduated from Heartland Horseshoeing School that Chris runs with his wife Kelly, son Cody, Cody’s wife Kirsty,  daughter Jaqueline, and her husband Cameron. I’m sure you will agree that if this whole shoeing thing doesn’t pan out, Chris could have a promising career in Radio. As we learned in Part 1, Liz Beeson-Evans grew up around horses. After splitting her childhood between Northern California and Jalisco, Mexico, Liz moved around a bit before returning to San Francisco with her now-husband. Spending time with her cousin in LA who's a farrier inspired her to get back to horses. In this episode, Liz talks about what being around horses can do for people. She founded a non-profit, Caring Cowgirl, that will offer therapeutic mini-equine visits to people in San Francisco. To that end, Liz is raising money to buy a minivan (get it?) to transport the minis—Vanessa, the mini donkey, and Shakira, her dwarf mini horse. Please visit her website and donate. For today’s show, I talk with Alan Dawson from the UK, he’s an artist blacksmith who has worked in art and architectural metalwork for over 35 years. Alan Dawson Associates have produced innovative, high quality, bespoke metalworks for all types of projects and he’s one of the founding members of BABA, the British Artist Blacksmith Association.  He’s also one of the core group of members that is organizing the Ypres 2016 International event in Belgium.  The event is a 100-year memorial commemorating all who have been affected by WW1, a 23 ft tall cenotaph surrounded by 2016 poppies and 25 panels depicting the trenches will be erected next to a German war cemetery in Belgium.  The 25 panels will be made onsite over a 6 day period by 25 Masters who will have a team of six blacksmiths each.  Alan has designed a panel in memory of a particular story from WW1 which is about the Jones brothers and he’s also made 40 poppies for the event.  We talk about the logistics it takes to pull off such a large event and about the panel competition review and winners. What We Talked About The event takes place in September 2016 to arrange the meeting of 300 to 400 blacksmiths and farriers from around the world. They will erect a 22-foot cenotaph surrounded by 2016 poppies and 25 panels to form a lasting memorial for all who were affected by WW1. There is a core group that is organizing this large international event, there are 8 in the group. The group also has help from country representatives, a group of blacksmiths in the UK and Hereford College students are also helping. The idea started in 2009 when a group of UK blacksmiths collaborated on a large sculpture called the “Pillar of Friendship” in Liverpool UK. Luc Vandacasteele, a Belgian smith, started thinking about doing another collaborative blacksmith event in Ypres, Belgium because of the importance of the Menin Gate, a memorial built in 1927 for soldiers that were never found. Luc brought the idea to the BABA Association to see if they would like to help with the organization of the event. Luc has done a tremendous amount of work in the way of organization of donated materials for the sculpture. He has coordinated the donation of services and materials for local businesses. The companies that have donated their services and materials are: A German steel supplier donated the material for the cenotaph. The raw material for the cenotaph alone costs just over 10,000 euros, its 23 ft tall, 6 ft wide, 4 inches thick and 12.5 tons. A Belgian engineering company donated their cutting services to plasma cut the positive and negative part of the poppy in the cenotaph. Another Belgian company donated their services to making the steel frame that will mount the cenotaph. A Belgian concrete company has donated the pre-cast concrete mound that will hold the 2016 poppies. Transportation of materials, structural engineering calculations, and many other services have been done free of charge. The core group is still working on raising the remaining money needed, about 80,000 pounds to cover the setup of the market with tents, forges, anvils, swage blocks, etc all in one day, also to reimburse the 25 Masters will incur for traveling to the event. A crowd funding campaign has been started to raise the funds, you can see and donate here, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ypres-2016-blacksmith-farrier-cenotaph#/ This blacksmith event is one of many in the town of Ypres happening for the centennial commemoration of the great war. Luc applied to the Ypres mayor years ago to have access to the center market for a week long blacksmith event. For the last 90 years, every night at 8 o’clock the local fire brigade provides buglers who play the last post at Menin Gate. The building is always full to capacity and for those who have applied ahead of time, there is a chance to lay a wreath in memory of a loved one. The core group has arranged for a blacksmith ceremony at Menin Gate one of the nights, it will include laying a wreath of poppies forged from children around the world. Alan recommends for us to read about the Jones Brothers, the article is on the Ypres 2016 website, http://www.ypres2016.com/category/the-great-war-stories/. A sample panel has been forged in honor of the Jones boys. The 25 panels that will surround the cenotaph will have interpretive information about each design so the half a million visitors per year can connect to WW1 and the memorial. 10 masters were invited and have accepted to design and make a panel each. 16 more blacksmiths have been chosen through a competition that was held internationally. Seven members of the core group reviewed 104 designs that were submitted for the competition. The 25 Masters that have been chosen are: SHONA JOHNSON - SCOTLAND KHEIR AKER - ISREAL TAKAYOSHI KOMINE - JAPAN PETER DE BEUS - BELGUIM WILL MAGUIRE - AUSTRALIA FRANSISCO GAZITUA - CHILI ACHIM KUHN - GERMANY VLADAMIR SOKHONEVICH - RUSSIA JEFFRY FUNK – AMERICA SANDRA DUNN - CANADA STEVEN LAURIJS – NETHERLANDS JIM WHITSON - SCOTLAND EGOR BAVYKIN - RUSSIA ONDREJ GELA – CZECHLOSLOVAKIA AMBROSE BURNE – UNITED KINGDOM IVAN KADOCHNIKOV - RUSSIA ROBERTO GIORDANI - ITALY ALEXANDER SUSHNIKOV - RUSSIA GIOVANNI SARTORI - ITALY JAMES MAKELY - AMERICA BENJAMIN KJELLMAN-CHAPIN - NORWAY JACOB HAGGERTY – UNITED KINGDOM PATRICK PELGROMS - BELGIUM PHILIP VERCAMMEN - BELGIUM PAUL MIKULA – SOUTH AFRICA There is an opportunity to register as a delegate to have the opportunity to forge with the master’s teams. The registration sign up is on the website here, http://www.ypres2016.com/delegate-registration/ An exhibition of curated forged work will also be set up next to the event called “Transitions”. Delyth Done is in charge of curating and organizing the exhibition.  The exhibition will continue to tour around Europe after the Ypres event.
