On this week's podcast Eve Harow takes a break from fresh grief over the murder of a young shepherd and continuous grief over the hostages and injured and fallen soldiers. She's filled with gratitude to the Israeli Air Force and defenses who in tandem with Hashem pulled off an incredible event in the wee hours of Sunday, a night she'll never forget. In advance of the Jerusalem book launch, Tuvia Tenenbom joins her to speak about his year with the ultra-Orthodox which he documented in his newly released English version of 'Careful, Beauties Ahead'. Raised in the Chareidi world and hence fluent in Yiddish, the best selling author shares his thoughts on the warm and welcoming atmosphere and the charm, humor and caring that he experienced while based out of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem. And the food? Much better than in the Bnai Brak of his youth. And the shtreimels? He's still not convinced that's what Moses wore.

Step into the whirlwind life of Rabbi Mordechai Yosef Ben Avraham, a man whose past is as rich and colorful as his present is devout and dedicated. From rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities to the sacred streets of Jerusalem, Rabbi Mordechai shares firsthand accounts of his unique experiences, reflecting on the role of Jews in the entertainment industry, the state of African American-Jewish relations, and his own profound spiritual awakening.A public speaker, Jewish diversity advocate, 2016 Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in California's 37th congressional district – a long-running Democratic stronghold – and the author of Mind of a Black Jew: The Oldest New Way of Thinking, Rabbi Mordechai candidly shares reflections and tales from his journey. This rich tapestry is woven with threads of culture, religion, and identity, and stories of the deeply personal evolution of a man seeking truth and connection.Rabbi Mordechai challenges listeners to consider the complexities of Jewish identity, exploring moral responsibilities within the music industry and dynamics of African American-Jewish relations. His urgent insights on rising anti-Semitism, along with candid thoughts on Kanye West's controversial comments, provide a thought-provoking examination of current issues.Believing in the power of Jewish diversity to dispel mistruths about Israel, Rabbi Mordechai invites listeners to consider the many shades of Jewish identity and Zera Yisrael, the descendants of Israel. Despite the polarized and tense nature of some conversations, he advocates for dialogue as a necessity in overcoming challenges. As Rabbi Mordechai recounts his spiritual odyssey, listeners are encouraged to reflect on their own paths and transformations. From being born Sharif Hassan, a Sufi Muslim, to immersion in a yeshiva in Mea Shearim, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem, his story serves as a powerful reminder that embracing change is never too late.Join us for a profound journey through the mind of a man who has traversed multiple worlds, emerging with a message of hope, unity, and the power of diversity to shape a more inclusive Jewish narrative. In an era marked by misinformation and materialism, this episode is a testament to the enduring quest for meaning and the transformative power of change.Recorded on January 30 (Day 116).  Thanks for tuning in!

Mark 2:27-28 Jesus said to them: “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” Some years ago, I spent a couple of months living in Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, which is home to a very large number of ultra-orthodox Jews. I very soon learnt, to my surprise, that the Sabbath begins late afternoon on Friday. It begins when the first star is seen in the sky and, from that moment, the shops shut and people go home to begin the rituals that mark the start of the Sabbath. There is something incredibly special about setting aside one day in seven as a day of rest. This was the example that God set when he created the world, and the law of Moses protected the day with a penalty of death for anyone who worked on the Sabbath. Over the centuries, the laws of the Sabbath were developed extensively. By the time of Jesus, there were scores of laws which regulated people's activities on the day. There were, essentially, 39 forms of work which ranged from burning, writing and erasing to washing, sewing and cooking. The Pharisees were strict observers of the Sabbath and, in their eagerness to trip Jesus up, they carefully observed the activities of Jesus and his disciples. When they spotted them walking through a field and breaking off the heads of grain to eat, they had their moment. The disciples were caught red-handed, and were guilty of a number of Sabbath violations, including walking and reaping. Jesus' response was to indicate that they had completely missed the point. God had given the gift of the Sabbath in order to be a blessing to people, not to tie them up in legal tangles. In a society that is busy seven days a week, we have a real challenge to keep the Sabbath special but, in doing so, we will receive many blessings. We need to work hard at ensuring that it doesn't get squeezed into the mould of the other six days. Question: What more could you do to make your Sabbath special? Prayer: Lord God, I thank you for the gift of the Sabbath. Help me to use it in order to get to know you better. Amen

By móc spokojnie zwiedzić to miejsce polecamy przyjść o świcie, zanim do Jerozolimy dotrą zorganizowane wycieczki. As we celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, host Marcela Sulak reads an extract from a story about the mitzvah of the etrog, by Israeli Nobel laureate S.Y. Agnon. It starts with the narrator making a trip to the Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim to purchase his own etrog: "I pushed my way into the shop of a seller of old books, who abandons book selling during the month or so before Sukkot in order to sell etrogs. The shop was full of customers, aside from the usual scholars and the types that crowd about wherever crowds are gathered. A beautiful scent arose from the etrogs and hadasim, which masked the smell of old books, most of which had come from the apartments of poor folk, forced to sell off their libraries to buy Sabbath provisions or to marry off their daughters." During his trip the narrator is plunged into a world of over-eager sellers, beleaguered customers, and, most importantly, old rabbinical tales about etrogs. Text:“The Etrog,” by S. Y. Agnon.
