Astrology has long been a tool of resistance, self-discovery, and connection. This week, Imara explores the power of astrology for queer and trans community and liberation. First, world-famous astrologer Chani Nicholas reads Imara's birth chart, offering insight into how we can find understanding through astrological practices during turbulent times. Then, Michael J. Morris stops by to share their journey to becoming a consulting astrologer. They explain how astrology can be used to expand our understanding of our own complexity, rather than to sort people into pre-determined categories.Subscribe to The Mess: Imara's Guide to Our Political Hellscape on Apple Podcasts.Send your trans joy recommendations to translash_podcast @ translash [dot] org Follow TransLash Media @translashmedia on TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, X, and Facebook.Follow Imara Jones on Instagram (@Imara_jones_), Threads (@imara_jones_), Bluesky (@imarajones.bsky.social), X (@ImaraJones)Follow our guests on social media:Marisol Vibración: Instagram (@marisolvibracion)Chani Nicholas: Instagram (@chaninicholas), TikTok (@chaninicholas), Bluesky (@chaninicholas)Michael J. Welcome to this edition of the EP podcast on “Astrology & Personhood” - where Michael J. Morris and I have an in-depth discourse on how astrology as a system and a tradition offers several significant possibilities for how we might understand the nature of personhood. We unpack how personhood is inherently relational, as we are constantly meeting the world in its many facets, and how we are highly complex “becomings” affected by the reductionism of limited social systems - including popular sun sign astrology. We hope you enjoy this richly philosophical conversation as much as we did! Far from the abbreviated artist name, Mijomor, is the complex talent of this Eastern Shore artist. Michael J. Morris has been an artist all of his life and an art educator since 1975.  His work has a dynamic illustrative style that reaches out to his viewers.      Mijomor works in different types of media ranging from graphic design to monoprinting, but his primary medium is oil painting. His subject matter includes people in day-to-day situations, poetry and painting combinations, landscapes, Afristracts (collaged images of Africa), and surrealism that verges on the side of fantasy.      Mijomor's visual images communicate a sense of magical expression of time, space, and uniqueness of one's self.  Each of his works evokes a mood or theme that screams to be seen, to be read, and to be remembered.      Mijomor (Michael J. Morris) is an artist with a painterly voice that speaks with the softness of a brush stroke and with the power of a cutting edge.

This is Michael. I have a quick addendum to this episode. In our discussion of magic, in my enthusiasm, I misattributed a definition of magic to Doreen Valiente that was actually given to us by Dion Fortune and popularized by Starhawk. Dion Fortune said that magic is the art of changing consciousness at will. Fortune was a British occultist and ceremonial magician who was very influential on later 20th century witches and occultists. Because I consider citation and attribution to be part of a feminist praxis, especially when crediting the work of women who often go uncredited, it felt important to add this note, and I am grateful for Norah including it.So, thank you for listening and be well. I interviewed Michael J. Morris, and we discussed astrology, ecosexuality, Black Lives Matter and liberation. I said it a few times in the episode but the conversation was literally psychedelic in feeling to me. Michael speaks to us of *connection* and is themselves, such a connector and I am really excited to bring you this conversation. Michael J. Morris is a writer, an educator, a facilitator, an artist, a witch, an astrologer, and a tarot reader who supports folks in making meaning of their lives as a practice of personal and collective healing and liberation. They have a consulting practice called Co Witchcraft Offerings, and they are also a Visiting Assistant Professor at Denison University where they teach in Women’s and Gender Studies, Queer Studies, and Environmental Studies.
