Episode 71 comes in two parts: In the first, Pam sits down with Audrey and Itsï to discuss the assassination of United Healthcare's CEO, and what the Left has to say about it. They consider the historical anarchist tactic of the propaganda of the deed, and what Marxism had to say about it. In the second part, Lucy and Wentai interview Nina Power, a writer active since the 90s on the British Left. They reflect on the experience of the Gen X and Millennial Left in the UK, the changes in feminism and gender politics during that time, and revisit her first book from 2009, One Dimensional Woman. This episode comes in two parts. At the beginning of this year the PAS published its second installment of the Platypus Review Reader. This volume, in addition to Marxism in the Age of Trump and Chris Cutrone's recent publication The Death of the Millennial Left, are a curated selection of articles in our monthly publication spanning between 2013 and 2017. In the first segment, we present a roundtable with Platypus members involved in the curation, publication and digestion of the Platypus Review Reader 2, opening up a discussion about the long history of the Platypus Review, the denouement of the Millennial Left, and how we make this history meaningful as the Zoomer Left enters the mid-2020s. In the second segment, Pam N. sits down for an interview led by our German members, Kat and Lara, to discuss the teach-in she gave in November 2023, after the October 7th attacks, and take up the horizons of possibility of the Millennial Left, the new forms of politicization and depoliticization, and the task of political education by Platypus today. --- Platypus Review Reader 2 Roundtable links: "The Platypus Review Reader" 1 and 2 and "Marxism in the Age of Trump" are available at https://platypus1917.org/publishing/ Full table of contents for the PRR2 available at https://platypus-publishing.square.site/product/pr-reader-ii-soft-/4?si=true "Editorial Statement" for the Platypus Review: https://platypus1917.org/platypus-review/editorial-statement/ Some key articles mentioned: "Program and Utopia" Platypus Panel (July 2013) https://platypus1917.org/2013/07/01/program-and-utopia/ "What is a Political Party for the Left?" Could the millennial left's political failures be traced back to a misalignment with historical Marxist frameworks? Join us on VarmVlog as we unpack this and more in an eye-opening conversation with Alex Hochuli, author of Omelets with Eggshells: On the Failure of the Millennial Left and co-host of Aufbungabunga Podcast. We dive into the heart of millennial left politics, pulling apart the complexity of its evolution and examining the personal experiences and organizational challenges faced by key figures and societies. From the importance of understanding local contexts to the critical need for clear demands and structured organization, this episode is packed with insights for anyone wondering where the millennial left went wrong. The rise and fall of leftist movements like Podemos and the institutionalization of BLM and Me Too are central to our discussion. We'll contrast the short-term gains and long-term struggles of these movements, and how they intersect with the entrenched political systems in Anglophone countries. We touch on the nuanced role of media and social media in shaping these movements, and the constraints that have stifled their potential within the American political landscape. This episode also delves into the speculative nature of political investments and the discomfort with radical change that has plagued recent leftist efforts. In reflecting on the broader political landscape, we explore the crisis of contemporary political progress and the decline in labor organization. Alex O'Chilly shares his thoughts on the generational gaps within the left and how historical amnesia affects current movements. From the fragmentation of elite-driven politics to the nostalgia for mid-20th century frameworks, we question the left's readiness to embrace uncertainty and ambition. Tune in to understand why the left needs to move beyond nostalgia and face the unique challenges of the 21st century head-on. Support the showCrew:Host: C. Capitalism is a revolutionary situation of the last stage of pre-history, and the potential and possibility for freedom, or else it is just what Hegel said history has always been: the slaughter-bench of everything good and virtuous humanity has ever achieved. Marxism defined itself as the critical self-consciousness of this task of socialism in capitalism, but this has been eclipsed by the mere moral condemnation of catastrophe. This happened as a result of Marxism's own failure, over a hundred years ago, to make good on the crisis. This pattern has repeated itself since then, in ever more obscure ways. Chris Cutrone's Marxism and Politics: Essays on Critical Theory 2006-2024 (Sublation Media, 2024) span the time of the Millennial Left's abortive search to rediscover a true politics for socialism in the history of Marxism: the attempted recovery of a lost revolutionary tradition. Cutrone's participation as a teacher alongside this journey into the heart of Marxism was guided by the Millennial investigation into controversial and divisive figures such as Vladimir Lenin, Rosa Luxembourg, Leon Trotsky, Georg Lukacs, Theodor Adorno and the Frankfurt School, and Marx himself. The question of a political party for socialism loomed large--but was abandoned. Readers of these essays will find no taboo unchallenged, as every aspect of Marxism's accumulated wreckage is underwritten by the red thread and haunting memory of what was once the world-historical character of socialist revolution. This was going to be a conversation mainly about Cutrone's new book and course, but after a certain point pretty early in, the focus became Palestine-Israel, Hamas, what a "real Marxist" position would mean, why anti-imperialism ain't it. Gabriel Rockhill kept coming up because he's big on that anti-imperialism is the Real Left Solution To The Riddle Of History or whatever, but TU does not necessarily endorse that view, knowing very little about Rockhill's actual positions. This was not about Rockhill so much as Cutrone's take on him and that tendency of the Left, which is interesting on its own. Share your own thoughts below! On media and the Millennial Left. [Patreon Exclusive: for full episode, subscribe at patreon.com/bungacast] Continuing the retrospective on the millennial left's failures, we invite political theorist Benjamin Studebaker back on. We discuss: Was left-populism a media event? Was the Millennial Left just a moment in internet history? Having bought into the internet's possibilities, can we abandon it? Does it make sense to speak of a "millennial" left? Faced with so many dead ends, do we need to "go monastic"? On the missed opportunity of the 2010s. Chris Cutrone of Platypus joins us to talk about his collection of essays, The Death of the Millennial Left. We discuss: Why define it as the "Millennial" Left? Was the anti-Stalinism of leaderless protests a good thing? Did the talk of "winning" from 2015 onwards represent maturity? Should the turn to a more public, statist capitalism make us more optimistic? How will the 'lawfare' used against Trump play out? On Dirtbag and the Millennial Left. Bungacast regular Amber A'Lee Frost is back to talk about her new book, Dirtbag — part memoir, part critical essays on millennial socialism. In this episode we discuss: Why "millennial"? Does it make sense to talk in generational terms? What are the left's "perversions" as Amber sees them? 'Occupy' was all leaderless, horizontalist crap. Why did Amber stick around? Bernie Sanders did not leave an organizational legacy – why? After the failure of left-populism, in US and Europe, was it all worth it? At patreon.com/bungacast we continue discussing the problems of DSA, as well as look forward to the US election and ask whether there's a vibe-shift at Davos. Links: Dirtbag OK Bunger! In The Death of the Millennial Left: Interventions: 2006-2022 (Sublation Media, 2023), Chris Cutrone investigates how and why the Millennial Left did not take up the task of socialism for the their time and relegated themselves to the shadows of the GenX Left and the New Left before them. The Millennial Left, facing the War on Terror, the Great Recession, the Arab Spring and the Occupy movement, and the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as the Presidencies of Obama and Trump and the political discontents expressed by them and by Bernie Sanders, Brexit and Jeremy Corbyn, SYRIZA, et al, was tasked with the struggle for socialism in the core of global capital. It failed to even attempt this task. In the essays collected here, spanning the Millennial generation's many agonies, Chris Cutrone cuts through the accumulated legacy of failures that the Millennials inherited from the Left of the 20th century and that blocked their view of the socialist politics needed to turn the crisis of neoliberal capitalism into a struggle to overcome capitalism. A critique of the history of the recent and current Left, the book is also a lesson in politics: the politics marking the 21st century and the absence of Marxism informing the Left as much as the Right. It is essential reading for anybody interested in a socialist politics of freedom. Chris Cutrone teaches Critical Theory at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Institute for Clinical Social Work. He completed his PhD on Adorno's Marxism at the University of Chicago, where he taught for many years in the Social Sciences Core Curriculum, and is the original lead organizer and chief pedagogue of the Platypus Affiliated Society.
