The story of Ruth is one of redemption, and not just for Ruth, her mother-in-law Naomi, and their family line. It's redemption for the family line that would lead to Jesse, and then David, which of course eventually leads to Jesus and the redemption of mankind. As Pastor Richard examines this passage, we'll be reminded of the grand scale of God's design for humanity and the way He brings blessing and provision to those who honor Him.

There has been a shift, a disconnect, a parting. Never before in human history has the differences been the older and generation been so sparse. However, we find the perfect example of two wildly different generations gathering together in the true life account of Ruth and her mother in law Naomi. In the book of Ruth, Pastor Lyall will look at their journey for the way we should go. We will see the call to Ruth's future, Naomi's legacy restored, and the true kinsman redeemer revealed. This is the return.

Ruth 1:8-18 After significant tragedies hit their family, Ruth and Orpah are determined to stay with their mother in law Naomi. Naomi wants what is best for them, which is to go back to their homes in hopes of finding another husband. Orpah does, but Ruth doubles down on staying with Naomi. Ruth is willing to sacrifice her best future to remain loyal to Naomi. How loyal are we in our relationships? How loyal are we to God based upon our obedience to Him? Do we appreciate God's loyalty to us?

One day Ruth's mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.” “I will do whatever you say,” Ruth answered. So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do. (Ruth 3:1-6)   Now comes some daft, pragmatic moves.  In chapter 1, Naomi had wished for the Lord to bless Ruth and Orpah with kindness, and the home of a new husband in which to find rest.  Now, sensing that God, in his kindness, has indeed provided the opportunities and gifts favourable to such an outcome, Naomi acts.  God is hardly mentioned in this new chapter.  Instead, the action focuses on human activity that brings the opportunities given and the prayers prayed together, into reality.  We recognize that Noami's bitterness has indeed been cracked open, enabling her to take such steps forward in faith.  Perhaps the God of Israel might just have more in store than she first imagined.  Perhaps his kindness could also be shown to her. In the opening chapter, it was Ruth who adopted Naomi.  Now Naomi adopts Ruth by calling her “my daughter,” and by taking on parental responsibility for her.  “I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for,” Noami says.  This is a good step forward in the narrative.  Naomi's cold bitterness has finally thawed sufficiently to allow her to return Ruth's embrace. Naomi's aim in providing for Ruth is noble.  Naomi's methods however—well, one wonders exactly what she is up to.  The plan Naomi hatches is filled with sexual overtones.  Just what exactly is she putting Ruth up to here with this midnight liaison with Boaz?  If caught, or caught in the wrong light, surely Ruth would be called out for something scandalous.  Nevertheless, Ruth responds in total submission to Naomi's plans. Righteous Ruth, the foreigner, is willing to take on the spectre of unrighteousness for the sake of her mother-in-law and the hope of redemption.  Having been transformed by the kindness of Ruth, Boaz, and even God himself, Naomi is willing to take on the risk of social scandal too.  In this way, the two women remind me of Joseph and Mary, willing to righteously bear the threat of scandal in pursuit of God's redemption. Two powerful forces come together in this chapter: hope in God's work of redemption and the embrace of committed friendship.  It is this companionship and hope that enable Naomi to step forward in faith.  We can often become discouraged—all the more so when we're lonely or feel that we've been abandoned: by others or by God.  But the intervention of a committed friend can be a powerful thing, assuring us we are not alone and drawing our eyes back to God's faithfulness so that we can step forward again in faith ourselves. Is there a friend that could use your embrace, or from whom you need one?  Go to them today.   As you journey on, go with the blessing of God:     May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you : wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness : protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing : at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing : once again into our doors.

Scripture:  Book of Ruth Speaker:  Scott Seela Summary: The sermon is a retelling of the story of Ruth, highlighting her loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi and her faith in God. When Naomi loses her husband and sons in Moab, she decides to return to Bethlehem, and Ruth pledges to stay by her side, adopting Naomi's people and God. In Bethlehem, Ruth meets Boaz, who notices her dedication and eventually fulfills the role of "guardian redeemer," ensuring Ruth and Naomi's welfare by marrying Ruth. The story emphasizes living out faith in daily life, like Boaz, who acts with integrity and kindness in a selfish world. Ultimately, Boaz and Ruth's faithfulness leads to a legacy culminating in King David, reminding listeners to honor God through everyday acts, trusting that their impact will be seen, if not now, then in eternity.

Crying used to make me uncomfortable. There was so much anger and chaos and sadness in my early childhood before my parents divorced that I subconsciously began using my blanket as a mini cape and tried to be Little Miss Sunshine. The way I figured it, my poor Mom and Dad already had their hands full of so much hard stuff they needed a daughter who was a self-sufficient smiler, not some needy crybaby. I was well into adulthood before I finally understood that my childish conviction that sad equals bad was way off base. Because sincere tears are God's gift to express emotion where words fail. Those tiny rivers of salt coursing down our cheeks can help wash the debris of spent sorrow from our weary souls. They can even carry big balloon bouquets of sheer joy. And biblical narrative is quite literally soaked with tears. Ruth wept after her husband died and at the idea of being separated from her mother-in-law Naomi, Hannah wept because she was brokenhearted over her infertility, of course Job cried out to God over the death of his children and employees, along with the catastrophic loss of his health and wealth, Jeremiah wept so often over how the Israelites had forsaken the unconditional love of God and were foolishly looking for love in all the wrong places that he became known as the “weeping prophet,” the Psalmists were nothing if not emotionally vulnerable and the Sons of Korah – who were ancient worship leaders – even exclaimed that tears had become their food, Peter wept bitterly when he realized Jesus was right the night before when He soberly declared Pete would betray Him three times before the rooster crowed the following morning, an unnamed woman in the Gospels was so overwhelmed by the kindness and accessibility of Jesus that she washed His feet with her tears, and our Savior himself shed tears during His earthly life and ministry. One of my favorite writers Charlotte Bronte put it this way, “I believe while I tremble, I trust while I weep.” The bottom line is grief is not ungodly and is rather, biblically defensible as well as modeled by the Messiah Himself. We hope today's conversation might be the beginning of real healing for some of you precious saints who've been bottling up your sorrow for far too long – likely with good intentions, or at the very least the goal of not being a burden to anyone else. So please grab your favorite beverage, your Bible and maybe a box of tissues and then scooch your chair right up next to ours on this big, ol' porch where you don't have to pretend like you're okay when you're not.

Ruth at the Threshing Floor (Ruth): Character matters. In this broken world, will you find yourself in a compromising situation from time to time? Absolutely. What will you do? Will you compromise yourself and follow the ways of the world? Or will you trust in the Lord and honor him with your life and the commitment of your character? Recorded on Aug 18, 2024, on Ruth 3:1-18 by Pastor David Parks. This sermon is part of the series Ruth: The Love of a Redeemer. In the Bible, the book of Ruth tells the story of a family that experienced a series of bitter tragedies. But through loyalty, integrity, and faithful love (hesed), they find unexpected redemption, restoration, and hope. Our God is a redeemer. Sermon Transcript So, all month, we're working through a series on the OT book of Ruth called The Love of a Redeemer. As we've seen so far, Ruth is all about facing the bitter tragedies of life by leaning on the hesed, or the steadfast loving-kindness of God, but also on the men and women in our lives who have the character and integrity to reflect this kind of redeeming love to us. As Justun said last week, the Bible, from cover to cover, is a redemption story. And sometimes, the people of the Bible reflect the redemptive love that God ultimately gave us through Jesus. Of course, very often, the people of the Bible (and perhaps other people in our lives today) do not reflect God's love or godly character. But Ruth provides several good models for us to learn from. In Act 1, we saw Ruth, a foreign (Moabite) woman, model this hesed-style love to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after their husbands died. We saw this in Ruth's incredible declaration of loyalty and commitment to Naomi and then in her willingness to leave her people and her gods and return to Bethlehem with Naomi to love and care for her. Last week, in Act 2, we saw Boaz model this hesed-style love for Ruth and Naomi. Boaz protected Ruth as she worked in his field and generously provided food for them. Today, in Act 3 of our play, we'll see if this loyalty and kindness, this protection and provision, might become something more for Boaz and Ruth. But the lead characters of our play find themselves in a seemingly sketchy situation that is a real test of their integrity. How would they respond? Will they compromise themselves, following the ways of the world? Or will they trust in the Lord and honor him with their lives and the commitment of their character? If you have your Bible/app, please open it to Ruth 3:1. Act 3, scene 1. Ruth 3:1–6 (NIV), “1 One day Ruth's mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. 2 Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. 3 Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.” 5 “I will do whatever you say,” Ruth answered. 6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.” So, we're not sure exactly how much time has passed here since Ruth and Naomi arrived from Moab. Chapter 1 ends with a transitional note from our narrator that they arrived in Bethlehem just as the barley harvest was starting. Then, Ruth providentially gleaned in the fields of Boaz during the harvest. Historically, the barley harvest would start in mid-May and would continue with the wheat harvest through the end of June. Now, here, perhaps sometime in July, the harvest was done, and the operation turned to winnow the grain on the threshing floor to separate the grain from the chaff. Bethlehem, which, as we said, meant “house of bread,” was filling back up. Now, harvest time was really hard work.

The account of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi has a special message for us in encouraging us to see the ‘bigger picture' of life, the picture as God sees it.  Because of a severe famine Naomi with her husband and 2 sons move from Bethlehem to Moab. Some years pass but then her husband dies and she “was left with her two sons”[1 v.3]. The sons marry Moabite women and “they lived there about ten years” [v.4] but then her sons die.  Naomi then decides to return to her home town of Bethlehem and one of her daughters-in-law insists on coming with her declaring, “Your people shall be my people and your God my God.” [v.16]  Naomi, at first, feels it would be  better if Ruth stayed in Moab and states, “it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of the LORD has gone out against me.” [v.13]    As events unfold, we begin to see the bigger picture.  God sees the end from the beginning. In Isaiah's chapter today we see God is challenging those who worship idols, “Let them declare what is to come” [44 v.7] as the LORD does. In Ch. 46 we will read, “I am God and there is no other … there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.” [v.9,10]  Naomi starts to perceive that “the hand of the LORD” weaves together events in a longer time frame in the outworking of his purposes; this is more than we mortals can normally comprehend, but we can catch some perception of it as we look back. Thus we see how Ruth became the grandmother of Jesse the father of David.  The time came when David was being hunted by Saul and David saw the need to protect his parents from the probability of Saul's vengeance and 1 Sam. 22 v.3,4 tells us he went to Moab and “said to the king of Moab, ‘Please let my father and mother stay with you'”  It is evident why he trusted this king. This gives us a glimpse of how, under God's oversight, “all things work together for good” [Romans 8 v.28].  So, in this 21st Century we eagerly watch to see how God will fulfil his word through Isaiah that we have read today in Ch. 44 for “The LORD … will be glorified in Israel” [v.22], and this nation is now a focus of attention in a the world that now largely believes in the ‘god of evolution' !  But God declares, “I am the LORD who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself … who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish” [v.24,25]  Let us all search God's word to see more evidence of his “hand” at work!  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christadelphians-talk/message

"Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus." Revelation 14:12  In Romans 12:1, we are reminded to present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Just as Jesus willingly sacrificed His life for our salvation, we are called to embrace sacrifice daily. This commitment requires dedication, steadfastness, and an unwavering resolve to pursue our goals despite the challenges that may come our way. An analogy can be drawn from the story of Abraham, who displayed unwavering faith and commitment when he was willing to sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of obedience to God. Despite the difficulty of the situation, Abraham trusted in God's plan and remained faithful. Similarly, we must be willing to make sacrifices and go the extra mile to fulfill our purpose and live out God's calling for our lives. 1 Peter 2:5 says, "You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." Let us be inspired by the story of Ruth, who exhibited great commitment and loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi by leaving her comfort zone to follow her. Ruth's dedication ultimately led her to a place of blessing and favor in the eyes of God. May we also be willing to forsake momentary comforts for the greater reward that comes from staying true to our commitments and walking in obedience to God. As followers of Christ, let us remember that true commitment involves sacrificial love, selflessness, and a willingness to prioritize eternal values over temporary pleasures. By embracing sacrifice and dedication wholeheartedly, we align ourselves with God's will and open doors for His blessings and grace to flow into every aspect of our lives. Amen. Numbers 6:24-26 says, "May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Amen. Prayer for the Day! Lord, grant me the strength to embrace sacrifice and dedication daily. May I have the courage to make sacrifices for the greater good, putting the needs of others before my own desires. Help me find joy and fulfillment in dedicating myself wholeheartedly to tasks and relationships, even when it is easy. In Jesus' name. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pastor-divineo/support

Referring to the Genesis passages from Part 1, Havilah addresses the challenges of using all masculine for God, noting it's impact on women and girls by assessing Genesis 2:18: “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Woman is too often described as “man's helper or assistant.” But a more faithful treatment of the text would be woman as man's “perfect comrade.”    Even more important, we tend to focus on God's maleness, versus God as a motherly father, or God as fatherly Mother. An unfaithful and overuse of masculine language for God leaves women and girls wondering if they are, by comparison, somehow inferior. Sermons too often imply that God is more male than female with problematic outcomes. More attention is needed to focus on the feminine characteristics of God.     Consider Isaiah 42:14 (citing God): “For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.” And, if women preached more, these texts would come up and balance the preponderance of masculine language for God. This would be affirming to women and that God is beyond gender and uses both masculine and feminine images.     Havilah discussed some of her favorite passages like: Judges 4:4ff focused on Deborah. “Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.” CBE's proposed translation of this verse is one you won't want to miss! Deborah is a woman of flame! She goes on top of the mountain to signal the army to charge. She's a leader, prophet, and a fiery woman. She an unstoppable leader. She is “high voltage!”     The Deuteronomy 22 text was also discussed as it describes the rape of a woman which the translations “soften” what actually happened. It is very vital to make vivid and real the facts: calling out the fact she was raped. NIV also takes this posture, but we make it more clear throughout the text that the real issue is sexual assault.     We discussed Exodus 21:10 as the text addresses a man who takes another wife again softening the experiences of the woman. But our translation brings out the power of the text to reveal with greater empathy the woman as well as the man in the text.    We end with a discussion on “strength” or chayil in Hebrew in the book of Ruth. Chayil, Havilah points out, refers not only to strength but as status in the community. Boaz is described throughout the book of Ruth as a man of status or respect. And in Chapter 3, Boaz speaks to Ruth telling her she is a chayil a woman of strength. This is astonishing because as a Moabite, she was not even permitted to enter the community of Israel. They were viewed as an incestuous people. Yet Boaz calls Ruth chayil one who is outstanding in the community even as she reached out to him in the cover of night. But because she did so as a loyal daughter-in-law, who worked to protect and preserve the life of her mother-in-law (Naomi), she too deserves the status of chayil.    Havilah ends her discussion with the Proverbs 31 woman as a leader a chayil.    Guest Bio:     Dr. Havilah Dharamraj currently serves as academic editor of CBE's award-winning academic journal, Priscilla Papers. She is a Langham Scholar and has for years pioneered a better biblical understanding of women in Scripture. Faithfulness is a cornerstone of our relationship with God. It is manifested in the mundane and the extraordinary, in the stories we share and the lives we live. This latest podcast episode explores this concept in depth, using the Book of Ruth as a primary source of inspiration. The story of Ruth is one that resonates deeply with us. Naomi and her family, forced to flee Bethlehem due to a famine, end up in the pagan region of Moab. There, Naomi's sons take Moabite wives, Orpah and Ruth, and then the women are left as widows who must make their way in the world.Looking at the book of Ruth in the biblical context in the time of Judges, a turbulent period in Israel's history when no king ruled the land, shows us how this story holds a significant place in God's redemptive plan, demonstrating faithfulness, commitment, and the covenant of love and kindness. The guys marvel how this story links Ruth, a non-Hebrew woman, with her great grandson, King David, and ultimately Jesus. The absence of direct mention of God in the narrative and the recurrent use of the word “redeemer” highlight the providence and sovereignty of God at work behind the scenes. The discussion takes a turn towards the importance of faithfulness in everyday life. They emphasize how faithfulness, a fundamental aspect of God's character, is mirrored in Ruth's actions. Drawing on the wisdom of Hudson Taylor, it is highlighted how faithfulness in the little things is a great thing. They further explore God's call to be generous to the poor and immigrants, echoing the message in the book of Ruth.Ruth's unwavering commitment to her mother-in-law Naomi is a testament to the power of faithfulness and the potential it holds to shape our lives. This faithfulness mirrors God's commitment to us, exemplified in the covenant of marriage and the local church community. The conversation is concluded by considering the faithfulness of Boaz, Ruth's redeemer, who sacrificed his own family name to redeem Ruth and Naomi. The podcast episode wraps up on a lighter note, discussing Mark's mug-flicking antics and podcast ratings. But the core message remains—the importance of faithfulness in our lives, reflected in the ordinary and extraordinary, the familiar and unfamiliar, and in the stories we share, from Ruth to alligators.Living Waters' newest pro-life film What Is It? will be released worldwide—and your church is invited to participate by hosting a screening for your congregation. Thanks for listening! We discuss the story of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi, who faced a famine and moved to Moab, and how Ruth found work in the field of Boaz. Then, we discuss the power of redemption, and how it can be seen in many stories in society. We also explore God's view of the poor, and how it's impossible to understand why certain events happen. God's provision and love is seen through Scripture when we take the time to look. Church of the Nazarene - East Rock The Relationship Keys: Loyalty The deep commitment and willingness it takes to overcome the hardships that sometimes come in relationship. What if today one of the greatest stands we could take against the enemy in our lives was to cultivate God honoring relationships? That's exactly what our new teaching series is all about. Through this series we are committed to seeing God's emphasis on the importance of our relationships- with family, members of the church, our community and friends How do we cultivate deeper, stronger, healthier relationships through the challenges we all experience in those relationships? That takes loyalty. Loyalty- To be faithful, unswerving in allegiance, constant, steadfast, and resolute in relationship You have heard it said before from someone going through a difficult time “You really find out who your friends are…” That's the issue of loyalty in real life.‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭24‬‬One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. There is no real relationship until two people have undergone challenges or hardships together. In those moments, loyalty plants the seeds for growth and fruit through the hardship. Loyalty is upheld as the foundation of relationships throughout Scripture. Moses and Joshua, David and Jonathan, Jesus, and Mary Magdalene and many more teach about loyalty to God and to each other. But perhaps the most direct example comes from a woman that walked the earth close to 3000 years ago. They are the words of Ruth to her mother-in-law Naomi.‭‭ Ruth‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭18‬‬ In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. The man's name was Elimelek, his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there. Now Elimelek, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband. When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there. With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah. Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother's home. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me. May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.” Then she kissed them goodbye and they wept aloud and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.” But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands? Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons— would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the Lord's hand has turned against me!” At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her. “Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.” But Ruth replied, “Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. As we begin to look at Naomi and Ruth's relationship, we see that they had endured a lot together. Their bond of loyalty had grown through immense suffering and grief together. As Naomi plans to return to her home, she knows there is no prospect for her daughter-in-law's there. Naomi urges them to leave behind their relationship in favor of a better more secure life. Orpah concedes to her mother-in-laws request, but Ruth stands on loyalty. It's the glue that holds us together in God honoring relationship. Loyalty for Ruth represented a significant and life changing sacrifice. There was hardly any guarantee that it would all work out, but Ruth couldn't forsake her relationship or her commitment to Naomi. That's because her commitment to loyalty flowed from her character. Faithful and loyal love was at the core of who she was. We can all recognize within ourselves that we want a friend like Ruth or even Sheriff Andy Taylor. Someone who sticks with us, even when there's nothing in it for them. But the call of loyalty for us today- our call and commission as followers of Jesus- is to BE that friend, to be an Andy or a Ruth, or to be more exact- to be Christ like in our loyalty to others. Loyalty is the essence, the character of God's faithful love. We experience the faithful, loyal, steadfast love of God through Christ Jesus- Friends loyal love is the message of the gospel. ‭‭John‬ ‭13‬:‭34‬-‭35‬‬“ A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” To be loyal, faithful, un-swerving, constant and steadfast in relationship is to love out of the very nature of Christ within us.Loyalty flows from our Character, from our heart transformed by grace. Why do I need to stick it out in relationship- Why should I put myself through that? Because we have been loved by an immeasurable and loyal love, and we are commanded to love others with that same love. The way we engage relationship is to be so radical, so loyal, that the world knows we are different- that we belong to Christ. That's loyalty. That's honoring God in relationship, especially when the going gets tough. Lord, give me the courage (and conviction) to love the people in my life with your selfless and loyal love. The Rev. James Stefanic, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Marshall, MN, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Ruth 2. Ruth followed her mother-in-law Naomi, into Israel. As a Moabite woman, one might question Ruth's loyalty, but she proved that she is faithful not only to Naomi, but to YHWH—the one true God. In this chapter, we see Ruth gleaning grain from the crops left over to feed the poor, as was God's command from of old. Ruth gleans in the field of Boaz, who takes an interest in her. Her encounter with Boaz, who would become for her a kinsman-redeemer, would change everything. But what is a kinsman-redeemer? The books of Ruth and Esther from the Old Testament are the only two books in the Bible named for women, and on Thy Strong Word, we delve deep into both. The book of Ruth is a story of a young Moabite widow's faithfulness to mother-in-law and her God. In a time of famine and violence, God leads Ruth to meet and marry Boaz whose union brings about a child, Obed, who would become the grandfather of King David.

When we think of Bible heroes and heroines who faced uncertain situations, one person who may immediately spring to mind is Ruth.Ruth, a Moabitess, had lost her husband and had decided to leave her hometown and follow her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem. As a young widow, Ruth's situation was incredibly difficult, especially given the cultural and historical context where women, particularly widows, were looked down on. Her safer bet would have been to bid her mother-in-law goodbye and head back to the familiar setting of her hometown. But Ruth decisively chooses to stay with Naomi, saying: Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. (Ruth 1: 16)Sometimes, we grow so accustomed to Bible stories that we forget that there were real people behind them with real feelings. I wonder what Ruth was going through as she made her way to Bethlehem. Was her mind riddled with questions? Questions and concerns like: Will we have enough to eat? Will they accept a foreigner like me? What if they ridicule and reject me there? What if I'm unable to support Naomi? Will I ever get to be a mother? Taking a brave decision didn't automatically shield Ruth from wondering. Uncertainty still loomed up ahead. But Ruth didn't stay stuck in self-pity or in fear. She put one foot in front of the other. She walked in the light she'd been given. The Bible says that God's Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths. When you face a mountain of questions and don't know what lies ahead, pray for His Word to illuminate the path so you can take one step at a time.We don't know the next chapter, or even the next page, in our lives. But we do know the Author who is crafting incredible storylines that our minds cannot grasp.Ruth went on to live a blessed life, marrying Boaz and later giving birth to a son who would be an ancestor to David. Ruth was included in the family line of Jesus—something she never would have foreseen or even understood when she decided to go along with Naomi, pledging her allegiance to the one true God. Just like for Ruth, all the days ordained for us are written in His book. We are called to trust and obey, to put our hands in His, and walk on the paths that He has planned for us.Let's pray:Father God, You are sovereign and You are good and You are wise and You are all-knowing. I trust You to write every chapter and every page and every word of my life. Those who look to You will never be put to shame. You will work all things out for the good of those who love You, who have been called according to Your purpose. So, Father, would You teach me to put my hand in Yours and trust You to write an incredible story through my life for Your glory and Your honor. In Jesus' name. Amen.

What if you were asked to name the most important quality in a person of faith? What would you say? Honesty? Purity? Compassion? Scripture actually has an answer to this question. In honor of the Jewish holiday Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, better known to Christian by its Greek name, Pentecost, we'll learn about the one quality that can take our faith to the next level. The biblical figure Ruth demonstrated this quality when she followed her mother-in-law Naomi back to Israel and joined the Jewish people. So did the nation of Israel when they accepted God's Torah unconditionally at the foot of Mt. Sinai. In today's podcast, host Yael Eckstein will explain how both these biblical stories connect to the holiday of Shavuot, which is celebrated this week, and why the quality of unconditional commitment — or commitedness — to God and His Word matters the most. Summer Update: After moving across the Country this summer and then getting very sick, I am posting a repeat of the The Covenant Series at the current time. The New Season of Moments with Moni will begin in the Fall of 2021. Praying for you all, and hoping that you are taking advantage of all the oportunites that God is placing before you. MoniThe Davidic Covenant:Last time we looked at the Biblical Covenants, we explored the Mosaic Covenant and left the House of Jacob on their way into the Promised Land without Moses. Joshua and Caleb were leading the people into the land of milk and honey after 40 years in the wilderness. Things were going well for them, and yet instead of returning God's favor and lovingkindness, the Israelites spun down and out into disobedience to God's Laws time and time again. The times of the Judges had come to an end, and this little tiny Bible Book called Ruth pops up with a story of customs and life during the period of the Judges. There are few points of DNA thread that weave their way through the book to our next stop along the way of the Biblical Covenants like a Dot to Dot pencil activity book.Genealogy is close to my heart. I love seeing the Family Tree fill up as research is done. The more the merrier, the more to love. Sometimes there is an unexpected surprise that pops up in the generations and I love to see how that particular branch of the family is grafted in to the Tree and see how and where they hail from. Family traits are sometimes strong, and overshadow what you might have thought was the norm. Whether it be an ancestral link that is lost or that pops up unexpectedly, it may cause much heartache or joy. I suppose it depends on the perspective of those already hanging in the family tree, whether they be nuts or peaches. Each family member can only be responsible for what is in their own heart as they reach out to the others. The Book of Ruth is a great example of a family lineage that stems from Abraham, to Moses, amongst a family line that was kept pure and separate because of the racist hearts of the Egyptians at the time of the slavery before the Exodus, to a time when all the Kings of Israel did what was right in their own eyes. Ruth is a beautiful account of a Moabitess, that marries into the line of the Hebrews. The Moabites were from the son of Lot and known to the Hebrews as “God's washpot” and yet this young woman, Ruth, was used by God to bring about the ancestral line of someone near and dear to my heart.A quick summary of Ruth's story is that she marries into a family of Hebrews that left Bethlehem during the famine. Ruth marries one of the sons in this family, but the dad dies, both the sons die, and the other daughter in law goes back to her family. Only Ruth, the Moabitess stays with her Mother in law Naomi and returns to Bethlehem to care for her. Here Ruth meets Boaz who cares for her and is a picture of a Redeemer. Boaz redeems the inheritance that belonged to the Hebrew widow Naomi and in the deal, gets the Land and a wife in Ruth. The last portion of the Book of Ruth gives us the line of the ten generations from Pharez through Boaz and Ruth to their descendants. In today's podcast, host Yael Eckstein will explain how both these biblical stories connect to the holiday of Shavuot, and why the quality of unconditional commitment — or commitedness — to God and His Word matters the most.
