Sephora has launched numerous new brands in recent months, many of them buzzy and beloved — but perhaps none has been as hotly anticipated as Ultra Violette (that's pronounced "violet"), the Aussie sunscreen brand first launched in 2018. Sephora marks the brand's official debut into the U.S. market — a landmark occasion, because, as co-founder Bec Jefferd said on this week's episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, "You can't be a serious global beauty brand if you aren't in the U.S." That's in spite of the fact that the brand has already launched in 29 other markets. Jefferd and co-founder Ava Matthews met as coworkers at Mecca, the premier Australian beauty retailer. Growing up in Australia, sun protection is a focus, even in childhood, given the country's climate and high skin cancer rates, Matthews said. Still, in 2016, when they began ideation for the brand, the duo saw the opportunity for a brand that approached the category differently. "[Sunscreen] wasn't at the center of a skin-care routine. We were talking about it as a skin cancer preventative or something to wear in summer, even in Australia," Matthews said. "There were a lot of people talking about sun care in a serious way, in terms of [skin] cancer, but no one talking about sun care as a kind of prestige skin-care product." For reference, Supergoop launched in 2007, as did Coola; while Vacation launched in 2021, as did fellow Aussie sunscreen brand Naked Sundays. Ultra Violette, with its brightly colored packaging and elegant formulas, quickly became one of the hottest sunscreen brands on the market — its unavailability in the States only added to its cool factor. In-the-know editors got it overseas or had friends bring it back when they traveled — it became ubiquitous in chic poolside pics. As recently as 2021, Matthews and Jefferd had no plans to launch in the States, but now, with formulas they've deemed just as good as their Aussie counterparts and the promise of a new broad-spectrum filter likely soon to be approved in the U.S., the time was right. And though the U.S. has not approved a new filter since 1999, 2026 might change that. As of March 28, the brand is on Sephora.com and in-store at all doors. As for the marketing for the Sephora launch, influencer partnerships are about to kick off, mailers have gone out, and a New York City breakfast, co-hosted by Tinx has been held. As Matthews put it, "We're really not prepared to fuck this up." The U.S. range features five products, to start, four sunscreens and one lip product — with SPF, of course — in two shades. Prices range from $22-$40. In 2024, the brand closed a 15 million Australian-dollar minority investment from equity firm Aria Growth Partners. In this episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, the co-founders discuss why it finally made sense to launch stateside, why there's promise in the long-awaited new sunscreen filters in the U.S. and who the Ultra Violette customer is, especially as the sunscreen market has become more crowded.
Lots of new products (Versed, Rhode, Glow Recipe, Naked Sundays, etc.) claim to be your skincare and makeup in one, but do they really live up to the hype? Jenn hashes it out with Julee. Before that, Julee shares the backstory of a recent cover story she wrote and explains how she ended up modeling for InnBeauty Project's new campaign. Plus, we're talking about a perfumed computer mouse, essential oils that will make you feel more alert, a drugstore cleanser that feels like a DIY facial, and the best-selling cleansing oil in South Korea.Episode recap: fatmascara.com/blog/ep-568Products mentioned in this episode: shopmy.us/collections/1349213Sponsor links & discount codes: fatmascara.com/sponsorsPrivate Facebook Group: Fat Mascara Raising a WandTikTok & Instagram: @fatmascara, @jenn_edit, @jessicamatlin + contributors @garrettmunce, @missjuleeSubmit a "Raise A Wand" product recommendation: text us or leave a voicemail at 646-481-8182 or email info@fatmascara.com Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/fatmascara. I'm back after a podcast break and I'm excited to answer SO many questions that came through on my instagram after I put up a question sticker. The questions I answer are: Where's Shannon? Do you ever eat gluten? What's been your best moment this year? Is your penthouse your forever home? What is the online workout you do? What is your exercise routine like at the moment? How do you stay motivated and persistent and how do you get out of a rut? What would you do if you weren't doing what you do? Favourite travel destination? Travel plans this year? Best self care tips besides food and workout? Update on the wellness and beauty tools and practices you've been using since your biohacking episode 174? I also speak on what I got up to over the holidays, why the bad times can often lead to something unexpectedly great, a few tips on creating habits and the importance of self care if you want to reach your goals this year. Her brand, Naked Sundays, has executed so well on that idea–it's grown 1133% since its first year in business. After becoming a viral staple in Australia, they've launched all over North America and the UK. This is Samantha Brett for Female Startup Club.Naked Sundays is an Australian SPF brand aimed at inspiring the next generation to love and wear SPF every single day with fun, easy to use sunscreens. This is a really inspiring story and we're going to break down her secrets to success, what makes a brand pop and what you need to know about regulations when building a sunscreen brand.I absolutely loved hearing about why Samantha decided to keep this venture a secret from the public for 9 months. She realized that sunscreen is complex, it's made by chemists, and she's not going to be the one in the kitchen mixing this herself. Instead she's getting someone to make the best of the best, but will anyone really take it seriously with her name on the brand? So she didn't tell anyone about being a founder. This is the first time I've heard of something like this on the show, and I find it such an interesting approach. Samantha didn't want people to think that I was just doing this for the sake of it.Another part that made this journey a little more complicated than manufacturing your regular beauty products, is that there is a strong barrier to entry in the sunscreen space. It is classed as a medication in Australia and classed as a drug in America. Those are things to really think about before diving into the space. Even when it comes to advertising rules, you should put on a warning *reapply regularly*, on social media, podcasts, influencers, the whole mix. You can't give a testimonial. It's pretty crazy stuff.Let's get straight into this episode, this is Samantha for Female Startup Club**Avoid prolonged sun exposure, make sure you re-apply frequently in accordance with directions. In episode 115 of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the founder of Naked Sundays, Samantha Brett.Samantha Brett has always loved beauty but, despite a brief stint as a beauty writer during an internship, she only ever wanted to be a news reporter. Sam worked as hard as she possibly could to achieve the dream she'd held onto since she was 14 years old, and once she got there it was a job she truly never pictured herself walking away from. That was, until, the 2019 to 2020 bushfire season. It was while reporting on those bushfires that she found herself questioning precisely what is was that she wanted from her life. The idea for Naked Sundays came from a few places at once a few months prior. Sam's husband was complaining about having to reapply his sunscreen while playing golf, meanwhile Sam was watching her television colleagues having cancerous lesions cut from their faces after full days reporting out in the sun with no way to apply sunscreen without ruining their makeup for camera. Sam pitched the idea for an SPF50+ Mist to 25 manufacturers before one finally said yes. She and her husband used money from their mortgage to fund the business, and Naked Sundays launched in January 2021 to a waitlist of over 2000 people. That's 2000 people before they'd launched a single product. The brand hit a reported $100k in sales within 4 weeks of that launch, the brand launched into Mecca that October and sold out of three months' worth of stock in 24 hours, and the brand was selling one product per minute by the end of that year. In this conversation, Sam shares how important it is to know the steps it'll take to reach your dream, rather than expecting it to happen tomorrow, why she waited until September 2021 to leave her television job, and a world exclusive announcement of not one but two new Naked Sundays products. Today I talk to Samantha Brett, the founder behind the cult skincare brand Naked Sundays! Despite being a best-selling author and television reporter on the iconic breakfast show Sunrise, Sam didn't reveal herself as the founder until 8 months after launch! Despite that, Naked Sundays sold $100k in the first 4 weeks, and achieved 7 figures in their first year. Naked Sundays is Australia's first completely invisible over-makeup sunscreen mist. This glow mist now sells one every minute globally! We're going to talk about how day job led to her creating her business, and how she grew this big brand from the ground up in such a short period of time.@naked_sundays @samantha_brett @thelazyceo_podcast Hosted on Acast. Few things feel as special as absolutely frothing one of our guests and everything they do, then hearing that they've been listening to the podcast themselves for years. And I feel even more privileged to have today's guest on the show because she doesn't do these very often (and in fact didn't even reveal herself as the founder of her business until 8 months after its explosive launch onto the scene!) That's just one of the many examples of Samantha Brett blazing her own trail – I found this chat such an invigorating reminder that someone out there is always looking for exactly what you have to offer even if it doesn't already exist or nobody else is doing it. And it turns out ALL of us were looking for and NEEDING exactly what she has to offer with her award-winning, world-leading Naked Sundays SPF skincare. If you're in the demographic of this podcast you've probably already heard if Naked Sundays but if not – it'll change your life (or at the very least your skin). In a country where melanoma rates are among the highest in the world, Samantha has changed the way the most at-risk but most reluctant demographic relates to SPF creating WORLD first, high performance, multi-purpose, chemist-formulated products. She explains them best herself, but imagine sunscreen without the whiteness, stickiness and clogging of the skin and I can't not mention the hydrating glow mist that allows you to reapply ON TOP of your make up INVISIBLY while setting not interrupting it!!!! AND this has all happened only recently with an ENTIRE career in news reporting and column writing beforehand – talk about a pathYAY! I'll stop before I gush too much, but I hope you are as blown away by this one as I am. From going from journalist to brand founder, the lightbulb moment that changed everything and how she is scaling her business thoughtfully, Samantha chatted to Gritty Pretty about anything and everything. In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, I'm chatting with the inspirational Samantha Brett, TV journalist, best-selling author, CEO of Naked Sundays, and my amazing friend of two decades. In the middle of a global pandemic, Samantha created and launched her own brand of award winning sunscreen called Naked Sundays. Her product had such high demand that she brought the launch forward, sold out completely and now it's a million-dollar business. That takes a certain kind of drive and tenacity! In this episode we talk about the challenges of start-ups, taking a leap of faith, and the pivotal decision Samantha made in taking extended leave from her full time job to focus on her business. We explore Samantha's early career as an intern at Fox News in New York. She applied before she even started university! Samantha's faith in herself and incredible persistence has paid off again and again throughout her journey. She has continued to chase dreams and make things happen through sheer perseverance and a strong belief in herself. Samantha has always felt confident in her ideas and we talk about the launch of ‘The Gamechangers' coffee table book where she interviewed successful and inspirational women about their stories. The success of this book was phenomenal and included an exclusive interview with Meghan Markle which turned out to be the last before she joined the Royal Family. Samantha has taken powerful step after powerful step. Her innate belief that anything is possible is truly infectious and I know you'll be inspired by her story. Stop waiting for someone else to give you permission and start living your dreams today. "The practice of coming home is continual."You are in for a treat today, my friend! Jess Robson is here on the podcast and this conversation is so refreshing, nourishing, and filled with those "me too" moments. Jess is a copywriter, a freelance creative, and a hand-lettering pro and you are so going to dig our chat today. Her words really are like honey!Today, we're talking about owning who you really are, how that process unfolded for Jess and this notion of coming home to yourself. This includes embracing your humanness, loving the mess, and accepting what is.Jess is someone who embodies true realness and full self-expression and I knew she was just the person to share about the journey of rerouting back to your truth. This path can definitely be a rocky one full of "shoulds" and following social norms and we talk about having the courage to align with what is true for you.Plus, we also chat about making bold leaps and how you know it's time to jump. In this chat, Jess intimately shares her leaps into the unknown and the markers along her path which illuminated her decision. We also deep dive on big, heart-centered topics like trust, faith, and allowing for the divine unfolding in your life (versus trying to force it all on your watch). So my friend, grab your notebook and dive into this conversation with Jess and I for the hour. This is a note-taking, a-ha moment inducing podcast episode if I've ever heard one myself! I hope you love this chat just as much as I do.About Jess:Jess Robson is a copywriter and freelance creative supporting entrepreneurs, business owners and brands in infusing their impact into their messaging, helping them speak their value into the world with power and purpose. Over five years as an entrepreneur, and supported by the endless years of voracious journaling and language-love, Jess has cultivated a 100% referral based business with clients from all corners of this fine planet we call home.Because words are everything in her world (and idle hands aren't a thing she's ever had), before copywriting really took off, Jess kick-started a passion for handlettering. Inspired by endless Youtube videos of lettering pros and armed with a cheap set of brushes, she put her hands to work and has established a custom-created line of prints (and more!), where words that leave a mark on her clients are expressed as art. And! Coming soon...the 'Robson' letters will be a font! #neat.Beyond the copy and the creative, Jess is an intrepid explorer, a passionate listener, a facilitator, speaker, bourbon-drinker and sea-to-sky living Squamish resident who's on a mission to bring a little more love to the world in the form of self-expression, empathy, and soul-deep connection. In this episode, you'll learn:- Why the process is so important to Jess. Especially understanding that things happen in divine timing versus on your clock. (+ Her value of "process" and how she describes it).- About Jess' concept of "Naked Sundays" and how to put yourself first and fill up your cup.- How to be yourself and be cool with it.- How Jess' practice of goal setting illuminated how afraid she was about failure.- That "the practice of coming home is continual." And that it's a constant evolution.- How to take up space in this world and breathe deeply knowing that your uniqueness isn't wrong.- About the importance of speaking up and as Jess perfectly shared: "exactly when I'm getting pinched off is exactly when I need to speak."- How to find a safe place and a person who can hold space for you to share your truth without judgment or pressure.- That the art of expressing yourself consciously sometimes comes from a quick pump of the breaks and asking yourself: "what do I want to say? What do I need to say?" Then, finding the words and a safe place to express it. (I love how Jess explains this in today's episode).- How to make the leap and when you know that you're ready to commit wholeheartedly.- That when we get lost in self-imposed "shoulds" and expectations, we lose ourselves, voice, and purpose. (+ The moment when Jess realized that she was no longer herself).- What to do when you get caught up in the "one-way-ness" of schools, organizations, cultures, and groups and how to find another way that feels creative, generative, and expressive of who you are.- How to get out the scarcity mindset and lean into abundance when it comes to our gifts and sharing our work. (+ The reminder that generous breeds more generosity).- How to trust that your service and voice is needed in the world. (+ How to cultivate that trust as well on a deep, soulful level).- How you are only responsible for your work and once you release your gifts, it's no longer on you. This means surrendering and trusting the Universe that what is meant for you will come to you.- That trust, faith, and diving off the diving board is a learned practice. (+ Jess' mantra: "inhale trust and love, exhale faith and patience").- "With faith and patience, it's the ability to know that what's going to happen is going to happen at the right time and that it's all coming."- About the power of listening. (+ How complete listening is a generous act and a tool to connect. It's a way we can hear someone's purpose behind their words).Resources Mentioned:- Fergie's Cafe in Squamish, BC- Scandinave Spa in Whistler, BC- The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer- The Juice Truck- On Writing by Stephen King- Copy School- Ladyvana & Girlvana Retreats- Alex Mazerolle- Russian Stacking Dolls- Is Your Competitiveness Rooted in Scarcity? — The Kelly Trach Show- The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron- Ryan LeierFind Jess:Instagram: @jessrobsonjessicarobson.com(+ Photos of Jess are by Jeremy Jude Lee)Find Kelly:Instagram: @kellytrachkellytrach.comMusic for The Kelly Trach Show is by Ikson: soundcloud.com/iksonSupport for today's show comes from:Four SigmaticNo jitters, packed with superfoods, and no stomach flare-ups like regular coffee.
