The word, “of God” in the Greek, means “out of God”. Verses 5:6-12 The phrase in verse 6, “. . . water and blood” has various interpretations. Some see it as the water and blood that poured out of Jesus' side at His crucifixion; others look to the baptism of Jesus in water when He was immersed in the Spirit. The word, “blood” in Hebrew often refers to the life in something. Today, the English words, “life blood”, would have a similar meaning. As the discussion continues, Henry seems to land on the best interpretation being the human birth experience including both the breaking of the water in the mother immediately before birth begins, and the blood that accompanies a person's birth. Verses 5:7-8 The group discusses at length the King James' Version (KJV) of verses 7 and 8: 7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. [Italics added for clarity] 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. Henry indicates that the Textus Receptus Latin manuscript (from which the KJV was mostly translated), includes the above italicized words that comprise verse 7 in the KJV. But the words of verse seven appear in only eight manuscripts, most of which are far later than the hundreds and hundreds of the earliest known and most reliable manuscripts. The words of verse 7 are not found any of these earliest manuscripts: Syrian, Coptic, Armenian, Ethiopic, Arabic, Slavonic, Old Latin in its early form (as used by Tertullian, Cyprian, Augustine), nor in the Vulgate (as used by Jerome). Thus, it seems the words of verse seven (italicized above) may have originated from a marginal note added by a copyist to a manuscript at a later time. Then, later copyists mistakenly considered those words to be part of the original manuscript, and began to include them as though they had been in the original manuscript. Verse 5:9 “Marturian” (the Greek word translated “witness” in the KJV), became our English word for “martyr”, since many Christians who were witnesses for Christ, ended up as martyrs as a because of their faith. Gushing All Over The Cute Guy.By Tx Tall Tales – Listen to the ► Podcast at Steamy Stories. I took her hand in mine and walked over to the beach entry, where we could slowly enter the pool. The water was still pretty cool, not having had much time to heat up in the last day. I dove under the water, preferring the all-at-once method of getting used to the water, while Amy slowly walked deeper, standing on tip-toes, squealing when the cold water reached her breasts. "It's going to warm up, right?""By tomorrow afternoon, it'll be 10 degrees warmer. Another reason to finish filling it as early as possible." I walked to her, and she wrapped her legs around me, her arms encircling my neck. I held her, moving slowly deeper, until the water was up to her neck. I stepped back toward the shallower water a few steps, until the water as armpit deep."It's not so bad now," she admitted."I wish this didn't have to end," I told her. "I can't imagine not being around you every day."She nodded, pulling me in close. "I know. Back to the boring, hum-drum, everyday life.""No. Not that. A new life, pursuing your dreams, right?"She nodded. "I hope so."I pressed my lips against hers, and we kissed each other thoroughly, lovingly, deeply. I had my hands on her ass, fondling them, reaching inside her bottoms to feel her flesh.I walked her to the shallow end, and put her down. "Wait here. I'll be right back."I went to the porch and retrieved the work she'd done, after drying my hands thoroughly. I grabbed the towels and set the towels and her writing down on the towels, along with a pen and the goals notebook to lean on. Then I got back in the pool and joined her at the side by her work."Find anything out, while you made your dream list?""Did I ever. There's so many things I want to do. I probably could have added another 100 to the list.""Like what? What really sticks in your head?""I like doing new and unusual things, but I don't. Not anymore. Not since I was in high-school. I want to scuba dive on a sunken boat, I want to go hang-gliding. I want to parachute out of a plane. I want to spend an afternoon on jet-skis. I want to ride across country using the back-roads on the back of a motorcycle. I want to go on a safari. I want to climb Kilimanjaro. I want to hike the Great Wall. I..."I laughed. "I get it. Lots of things you want to do. How about education, career, financial. Any ideas there?"She nodded eagerly. "I want to get a degree in marketing, and an MBA. I want to learn all about running and operating a non-profit organization. I'm going to work for one of the medium sized non-profits and see how things are really done, versus what they teach you in school. And then I'm going to figure out who I most want to help in the world, and dedicate my life to that. I'm not sure what that will be yet, but I know I want to help people, not endangered animals, not the environment, not politics. People who need my help, and whose lives can change dramatically for the better."She was leaning over the side of the pool, flipping through her pages of writing, so animated it had me choking up. Such a difference.I was leaning against her body, looking over her shoulder. "You know what I love about what you just told me?""No. What?""How you went from all the things you said you wanted to do, to telling me what you were going to do. You are going to work for a non-profit. You are going to figure out who you're going to help, and how you are going to dedicate your life to that. That's wonderful. You know. You have a purpose."My hands seemed to have a mind of their own, and were busy wandering over her body."Did I say that? I didn't even notice.""Yes, you went from a list of things you wanted to do, things that interested you but were not absolutes, to the core of what you wanted to do with your life."I turned her around so she was facing me. "Tonight, you'll take that list, and using it you'll make a new one. You'll list five things you want to do, you want to have, you want to learn, and you want to be. Then you'll make a plan for achieving each one, with small goals that will get you to your final goal. For example, if you chose climb Kilimanjaro, you'd figure you what you need to know to do it, how you'll need to prepare, when you want to go, how much money you'll need to do it, etc.""You're a slave driver, you know?" she said with a grin."Yes. You'll thank me some day. But I'm not done yet. By Monday, I want you to make one initial step toward each of your goals. You're going to write down these goals, and you're going to read them every morning, the first thing you do when you get up.""How do you know all this stuff, Alex?""My father made me do the same thing when I turned 16. So that my final years of high-school would prepare me for what I wanted out of life. Make sure I go to the right college. Pursue the right degree. Things like that.""You have a list then?""I do. Let's get out of the pool and I'll show you."We went to the porch, and dried off. "Lay down. Time for me to lotion you up one last time," I told her. I went to my wallet and retrieved my list. It was laminated, folded in half, with writing on both sides. "Once a month I update it. Rewriting my goals, removing things I've completed and adding new tasks is a powerful thing."I held it in front of her. "It's a very private thing. I've never showed anybody this list. Some of the items are very personal." I put it in her hands."You'll let me read it?""Of course. You are the only one I'd consider letting read it. You are on it."She turned her head and looked at me in surprise. "Me?""Since I first saw you.""You're kidding.""Not in the least. At least one of my goals in every category is what I call a 'reach'. It's not likely to happen, but it's something that I can dream about. You've always been in that category."She was scanning the list, and found herself. "Make love to Amy Daniels. Written in italics.""Italics are my reach goals.""You've had my name on your list for how long?"I grabbed the lotion and started on her back. "Since I made my first list. Every month for the last 3 years I've made a new list, writing it from scratch, and you've always been part of it. I knew I didn't stand a chance, but a guy could dream right?""This is pretty incredible," she said softly."I know. It's one of those goals I had no idea how to approach. A lot of people are talking about this whole idea of 'The Secret' where if you think about something enough and want it enough, and you open yourself to opportunities, the law of attraction will make it come true. I'm not much of a believer in that. I believe hard work and perseverance has a lot more to do with achieving your goals. But after this week, I'm starting to wonder."I reached down and eased her bikini bottoms off of her, and put the suntan lotion on her pretty pale cheeks."God, this is disturbing," she said. "My name on your list, a goal of yours you've thought about for years. If you'd asked me a week ago if it would ever have happened, I would have laughed. And now the dream is yours, if you want."I was lotioning her legs. "What do you think? Do I want it?"She shivered. "I can't imagine wanting anything that much. And to think that I'm the object of that desire. Jesus, I don't know what to think.""Does it make you think about the power of written goals?""And then some. How many of your goals have you achieved?""Hundreds. Every month I knock off more of the short ones. You would be the first top tier goal or reach goal. I think I might retire after that. No place left to go but down."I had her turn over, but she still had her nose buried in my list. "2 Million dollars in 8 years?""That one started out 1 million in 10 years. I now know that's two easy. Pretty soon I'll probably make it 2.5 million.""Create something that makes the front page of the newspaper?""Pretty cool, huh?""Climb the seven summits? What's that?""The highest mountain on each continent. Kilimanjaro's one of them. Looks like we have something in common." I was massaging her breasts. "None of those peaks hold a candle to these. They'll be a let down after having summited yours." I pulled her nipples up, feeling the tips harden."And you look at this every day, and base your actions on these goals?""That's it. Everything on that list that's not in italics, I'm going to do. No question about it.""I wish I had your confidence, Alex.""You will. Make your list. Read it daily. Let it guide your actions. And a year from now, when you've seen the incredible progress you've made, you'll know with complete certainty you can do it too."I was working on her legs. I'd skipped past her pretty little pussy, and she noticed. "No attention for the kitty?" she asked teasingly."Not yet. I don't like the taste of this suntan lotion." I parted her legs and moved between them, kissing the soft freshly shaven skin around her magical opening. "Smooth," I murmured."Fresh, just for you," she said softly. She was still reading my list, obviously enthralled. "Four categories, one to a page, three big goals on each page, smaller tasks below each one. This is what I should do?""You can. It works for me. I have a bigger list, but this is the one I can carry in my pocket and reflect on."She lowered the list, rubbing her fingers through my hair. "You do that so well, Alex," she said softly."Talk to me, Amy. Tell me what I do wrong, what you'd prefer I do, whatever makes you feel best. Help me do the best I can for you."She moaned a little. "Less thrusting with the fingers, more pushing around the inside, top and bottom," she whispered.I turned my fingers over and pressed against the top of her pussy, massaging it."God, yes, like that. Top and bottom. Top shallow, bottom deep," she gasped.I alternated between the two, taking my time with each. I could feel her reactions, and soon learned where I had to apply the pressure, and how much. I could feel her pussy reacting, pulsing around my fingers."Less licking, more sucking," she pleaded.I moved my mouth over the top area, sucking in her lips, feeling her clit moving underneath the skin. I didn't have a lot of experience at this, and feeling that movement was enlightening. I moved my tongue against it, press and release, press and release, pulsing the pressure."Oh God, oh God, oh God, don't stop!" she moaned sweetly.I turned my fingers upward, pressing in and drawing forward, feeling the bumpy texture of her g-spot, petting it directly. She cried out, and my mouth was flooded with a light liquid, faintly sweet and salty. I pulled back a bit, surprised. I'd never had that happen before. I was hit with another strong squirt, on the chin. Amy moaned, and released a third smaller stream. My hand was caressing the outside of her pussy, soaked almost to the elbow. It was beyond amazing. She was gasping, her whole body twisting. I was no longer touching her, but I could see her pussy trembling, and a smaller trickle of liquid escaped. I brought my mouth down over her, licking up her juices, trying to be gentle. She rose up suddenly. "Jesus, Alex! I'm sorry, did I pee on you?"I laughed. "Not hardly. I'm pretty sure you squirted. It's a first for me, but it's way too sweet to be pee. You taste amazing."She was blushing, "God, that was incredible! I've never felt anything like that.""You want to feel it again?" I asked, licking her gently."Do you think we can, that it can be like that again?""All we can do is try, if you're willing.""It's not gross? Squirting all over you like that?""I loved it. Loved making you come for me. Making you lose control. Let me do it again."She leaned back, and opened her legs back up.I learned something new. At least as far as Amy was concerned. Once you open the floodgates, it doesn't take nearly as long to reopen them. She squirted for more twice more, not nearly as much though, the second time losing control, her entire body squirming and twisting, unable to stop coming for a long time.I sat next to her, caressing her soothingly, calming her. She looked frightened at her own response, gasping, squirming underneath my touch. Running my hand down the inside of her thigh seemed to set her off again, moaning and twisting. I moved higher and brushed her hair back. "Shush," I whispered, "It's Ok."Amy rolled on her side, clutching my leg curling up protectively. I rubbed her back gently, waiting for her to calm down. She buried her head against my knee, and once she started breathing normally, she pressed her lips against my skin. She slowly uncurled, rolling onto her back, her arms across her chest. "No more," she whispered.
Hebrews 1:7Hi Folks. We're finally up to verse 7 of Hebrews, chapter one. I'm going to read it in the NIV:Hebrews 1:7 (NIV) In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire."I'd like to ask you a question. How can we explain this verse to someone? How can we expound it or dig the meaning out of it? I don't think that is necessarily an easy thing to do. But, based on our last session together, I think there is a way to do it. And it's a way that we can also apply to some other verses and passages that may not be clear. In Hebrews 1:6, we saw that the phrase “Let all God's angels worship Him” came from Psalm 97:7 in the Septuagint and we were able to understand what Hebrews 1:6 was talking about by looking at the message of Psalm 97 as a whole. And doing that opened our understanding to let us see that Hebrews 1:6 was actually telling us about the second coming of Christ. I think that the author of Hebrews expected us to see this and to get this additional understanding from Psalm 97:7 in the Septuagint. This method, if we can call it that, was used by Jesus in responding to the Jewish leaders when they said certain things to Him. Let's look at an example of that:Matthew 21:16 (NIV) "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, "'From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise'?"Now let's look at that verse in context:Matthew 21:13-16 (NIV) "It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you are making it 'a den of robbers.'" [14] The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. [15] But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant. [16] "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus, "have you never read, "'From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise'?"The chief priests and the teachers of the law were indignant when they saw the wonderful things that Yeshua did and when the children cried out Hosanna to the Son of David. These children were praising Jesus and calling Him the Messiah! They recognized who He was, and they exclaimed it, unlike these Jewish leaders. I'm going to quote Jesus' response from the King James Version: Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?Jesus was saying this to these leaders: You've seen what I've done but you deny that I'm the Messiah. Even these children know who I am. And haven't you read what the Tehillim (the Psalms) say about me? Yeshua was quoting Psalm 8:2. Let's look at that in context:Psalms 8:1-9 (NKJV) O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! [2] Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. [3] When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, [4] What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? [5] For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. [6] You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, [7] All sheep and oxen—Even the beasts of the field, [8] The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. [9] O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth! This method of quoting a verse which “hinted” at a passage of Scripture that would provide additional understanding was sometimes used by Rabbis with their students and it was given a name: remez, meaning hint. Can you imagine how those Jewish leaders who knew about remez might have reacted? They would know that Jesus is telling them very clearly and loudly through Psalm 8 that He is LORD.Now the author of Hebrews is doing something similar but without the rebuke to his readers that Jesus intended for the Jewish leaders.Look at the Psalm that is referenced. Is this an example of remez? Does Hebrews 1:6, which we studied last time, contain an example of remez (Psalm 97:7) regarding the second coming? I believe that it does. AND does Hebrews 1:7, our verse for today, contain an example of remez? I hope to show you shortly that the answer is yes.Now Jesus “used” remez to convict the pharisees of the truth about Him. Jesus invented remez. But if the author of Hebrews used it, why did he use it in particular instances? What was the purpose? It may have been a way for the ancient Jewish readers and for us today to learn that the Bible is a commentary on itself. In fact, it's the best commentary on itself. Why is that? Because the Bible never contradicts itself and because the Bible is complete; it contains everything that God wants us to know about Him, and His Son and His Holy Spirit. This knowledge is most useful! And the NKJV makes it easy to do this. Let's read Hebrews 1:7 again, this time in the NKJV:Hebrews 1:7 (NKJV) And of the angels He says: "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS SPIRITS AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE."Because the phrase WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS SPIRITS AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE is in all caps, we know that it's a quote from the Old Testament. It comes from Psalm 104. Let's read the first six verses of that Psalm:Psalms 104:1-6 (NKJV) Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty, [2] Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain. [3] He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, Who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the wind, [4] Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire. [5] You who laid the foundations of the earth, So that it should not be moved forever, [6] You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains. (Italics added). How do we interpret this? Now remember that beginning with Hebrews 1:4 all the way through Hebrews 1:8 (which we haven't gotten to yet) we are seeing a comparison between Jesus and angels. Jesus is different than the angels and He is far superior. He is the One and only Son of God, the only begotten Son. What is Psalm 104 adding here? It is telling us how great the LORD is and the writer is using the word Yahweh, or if you like, Adonai. This is without question God, Yod Hay Vav Hay, the Tetragrammaton or I AM. Could it be that the author of Hebrews, by drawing us to this Psalm, is leading us to grasp, that Jesus is equal to Yahweh? It seems to me that the answer is yes, definitely. Now you might say that the author has already done that. True. But He is perhaps doing it even more powerfully by referring us to God's proper name and by doing that He is equating Jesus, the Son, very strongly with God the Father.Jesus did this very thing Himself. Let's read an example of that:John 8:58 (NKJV) 58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."And Hebrews 1:7 is also telling us that Angels, as powerful and majestic as they are, are created beings, unlike Yeshua, Who is LORD, and Who has always existed. But what about the LORD making His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire? Are angels and ministers the same here, in Hebrews 1:7? I think that verses 13 and 14 from this very chapter that we are reading from now give us the answer. Let's read them together right now:Hebrews 1:13-14 NKJVBut to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"? [14] Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? So, yes, the ministers here, in verse 1:7 are angels! And they are great! But Yeshua, who is equal to Yahweh, is greater!Folks, thank you for listening. I hope Hebrews 1:7 has inspired you and caused you to rejoice! But, I have a question for each and every one of you. Do you know Jesus personally? Are you going to spend eternity in heaven with Him? If you know Him, you will! If you don't know Him or if you're not sure please cry out to Him, today, now. You can shout the words or you can say them softly – He will hear. Ask Him to forgive your sins, to make you a new creation, to be your Lord and Savior, and to give you peace with God, now and forever.God bless you folks. This is a public episode. The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Today we are going to look at the proper use of visuals when presenting. Many people ask us at Dale Carnegie Tokyo Training, what should I do with preparing my PowerPoint or my key note presentation? What about the visuals? What is too much? What is too little? What is the best way to make this work for me? Well there are a couple of things we need to consider at the very beginning. What about the types of visuals that we need to use? How many visuals are required? Some people have very few. Some people have a lot. I once gave a five minute presentation and I used for that, I think, about 90 visuals. Now you might be thinking, 90 visuals in five minutes? Are you nuts? Well that particular presentation was a warm up to a keynote speaker. We'd sponsored the event and for that we got five minutes of stage time. Now I remember a quote from Abraham Lincoln. Something along the lines of, if you want me to give a three hour speech I can get up and give it right now. But if you want a 20 minute speech it will take me three or four weeks to prepare it. And that's right. To give a very long rambling speech is relatively easy. To give a very concise sharp speech is very tough. Five minutes is a really tough time period in which to speak and very hard to have impact. So in that particular case, I used 90 slides. I was using visual stimulation every two seconds. As I was speaking, behind me on a big screen, visuals were just hitting the audience hard, because in that five minutes, I needed to get across an image about Dale Carnegie Tokyo Training. I used massed visual stimulation, because I didn't have many words available to me in just five minutes, to really grab that audience's attention with strong memorable ideas. So I was using that two seconds interval as a technique. For that particular case, it worked very well. Generally speaking, at the start in the design stage, I usually want to use too many visuals, because I am too greedy seeing all of these great slides I can show people. I want to show them, but I really have to pair them down. I have to really discipline myself to cut them out. It is painful. “Oh, I really want to use that graph”, “Oh that's a great visual”. No, no, no, no. Cut it out. Try and keep it in some sort of range that works for you depending on what the purpose of your presentation is. Degree of permanency is something you need to think about. It might be better to use a handout. It might be something that is too complex to put up on the screen. Unfortunately you often get this visual complexity on slides. I worked in the financial sector for a number of years and had to sit through countless presentations of spreadsheets up on screens with numbers that were so tiny, the person standing next to the screen giving the presentation had no clue how to read them and they would say crazy things like, “I know you can't see this but…”. Well of course we can't see the thing, it's too damn small. Get those sorts of visuals in the hands of the audience, rather than try to see it on the screen. As for the size of the audience, for a very big audience, the visuals may be more important than for a small audience. A big venue is less intimate. From down the back of the hall, you are a tiny, remote figure standing there on the stage. The audience is more easily fixated with what is going up on the slides on the big screen above the speaker. Ask yourself, “does this visual back up the content of what I am saying? How much time have I got to prepare?”. Where I think a lot of people make a mistake is they put all the time into the slide production and no time is spent on the rehearsal. So the whole balance flips. Instead of getting the presentation structure and content right and then spending time on the rehearsal, all of the time is sucked up into the visuals logistics. Be very cautious about spending all your time on creating slides and not allowing enough time on the actual physical standing delivery practice. And finally the cost. Sometimes there might be a cost to buying visuals which have copyright. That may not be something you want to do. Here's some guidelines for using visuals. As it was mentioned before, sometimes less is definitely best. On a screen, try to avoid paragraphs. Try to avoid sentences. If you can, single words, bullet points. Single words can be very, very powerful. Just one word or even just one number can be very, very impactful. You can talk to the number, or you can talk to that word. Or just put up a photograph or a simple visual and you talk to the visual. You don't have to crowd the screen with stuff that we can read ourselves. What you really want is the audience to be focused on you, the presenter and not what's on the screen. This is very critical. We don't want the screen competing with us. The less you have up there the better, because people look at it in two seconds, they've got it and then they come back to you. Which is where you want them. Let me talk about the new two second rule. Attention spans are so micro today. If you are putting something up on a screen and an audience cannot understand it within two seconds, it's probably too complicated. Think about reducing down the volume or breaking it into a couple of parts and put these on different slides. Maybe just leave it out and replace it with something you can talk to. Don't make people work their way through something very complex on the screen. Generally, the six-by-six rule means that again, less is best. Six words on a line. Maybe six lines maximum on a screen is good. Again, keeping it very minimalist. With fonts, try to make fonts easy to read. You might use for the title 44 font size, and for the text a 32. Large font is easier to read if you are at the back of the hall. In terms of font types, sans serif fonts like Arial are very easy to read. Whereas serif fonts like Times, Times Roman, which have a lot of additional fancy work can be distracting. Be very sparing with all uppercase. It's actually screaming at your audience; it's shouting at your audience when you use strong uppercase like that. You can use it. But use it strategically and very practically to make a strong point. Upper and lowercase is much more balanced. For visibility, be careful about underline. Yes you can use underline, but use it sparingly. Bold, yes you can use bold, but the same thing, only use it occasionally. Italics, yes, but very rarely with italics, because it's not so easy to read. With things like transitions and animations, sometimes it's good to reveal one concept at a time, because there is only one idea on the screen and then you can talk to that, so you are not competing with a lot of words on the screen. Try and keep it consistent and simple. Or sometimes maybe have it all up on the screen at one time. If you are going to have animation, where it might be wipe left to right for example, as you bring in something, then have it wipe right all the time. Don't have one wipe right, then another wipe up and the next one is wipe left. It's very confusing for an audience. And if we are going to indent on a visual, do it maybe just once on that page. Don't have a sentence and a couple of words and a whole bunch of indents. Just try and keep it as simple as possible. If you've got that much information, whip that over on to another page. Pictures have a lot of visual appeal and as we say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Very simply, in two seconds, the audience have got it. Now they're ready for your words to talk about the relevancy of this visual image to what your talk is about today. In a few weeks' time, in Episode #295, we continue with Part Two of the correct use of visuals and look at graphs, colours, room lighting and some technical nightmares to avoid.
“This new braille has so many extra dots!” This is something we hear a lot, and it's often followed by the question, “What do they all mean?” This Masterclass will help to solve the mystery. James Bowden, Braille Technical Officer at RNIB, Chairman of the Braille Coding Group of the UK Association for Accessible Formats, and the UK Representative to the Code Maintenance Committee of the International Council on English Braille, described the common indicators in UEB and gave some real world examples of their use. In particular, we covered: Capital letters and block capitals Making sure a word or symbol is not misread as a contraction Italicised, bolded and underlined text This session was recorded on Tuesday 16 May 2023. I am (or was) a musician, marathoner (Boston in 1988), military officer, math modeler, and (United) Methodist Pastor. At times, I am a muse. That is an eclectic background and it leads me, humbly I hope, to think of myself as a Renaissance Person: Mantua Italy claims the Renaissance started there. It works. I have degrees in Music, Business (Quantitative Methods -- don't ask!), Divinity and Church Leadership. I have been a leader in various venues and activities since 1968 while still in college. Growing in leadership is something that I have taken, and still take, very seriously. This re-branding, re-purposing of my podcast will initially focus on financial leadership within the Mountain Sky Conference of the United Methodist and, hopefully, her local churches. It will not stay there. In the beginning, for the first couple of months or so, I will not have a schedule for release. Once I get my sea legs, I expect to produce a new podcast either weekly or every other week. We'll see. When ChatGPT was asked "what is a mindful leader", this was the response (Italics and font modifications are mine, not ChatGPT): A mindful leader is someone who practices mindfulness in their leadership style. Mindfulness is the practice of being present and fully engaged in the current moment, without judgment or distraction. Mindful leaders cultivate a deep awareness of themselves and their surroundings, which enables them to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, and create a positive work environment. Mindful leadership involves being fully present in interactions with employees, listening actively, and paying attention to nonverbal cues. It also involves being aware of one's own emotions and managing them in a constructive manner, as well as being attuned to the emotions of others and responding appropriately. A mindful leader is also open to learning and growth, and encourages their employees to do the same. They prioritize the well-being of their employees and foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, and collaboration. Overall, a mindful leader is someone who leads with authenticity, empathy, and self-awareness, and who prioritizes the well-being and growth of their team. I frankly think that forms a superb intellectual framework for how I might proceed. Authenticity, empathy, and self-awareness are excellent values for any leader. My overall purpose is sharing.

Introduction: We are at WarFACT: We are at war. Bold. Underline. Italics. Exclamation point. We are at war. There are an estimated 600 million Evangelical Christians around the globe today making up about 8% of the world's population. The majority of the other 92% are walking in darkness, held captive by our great enemy Satan who is the father of lies. Billions have been led astray by false forms of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Secularism, Materialism, Atheism, and vast array of other false religions. These all stand in opposition to the Gospel and often fight with great zeal against Jesus Christ and His people. We are engaged in a war for the souls of men, women and children. The Battle is real and it one that we cannot win on our own.Stories of persecutionIn a few weeks we will be celebrating Palm Sunday here at TPC. Six years ago, on Palm Sunday 2017, bombs blew up at two churches in Egypt, killing nearly fifty Christians and injuring more than one hundred others. Just hours after the blast, amid outrage and grief, Pastor Boulos stepped before his packed church in Egypt and gave the terrorists a three-point sermon that went viral worldwide. It was entitled “A Message to Those Who Kill Us.” His three points were simple: “Thank you,” “We love you,” and “We're praying for you.” Pastor Boulos said “Thank you” because the terrorists gave the dead the honor to die as Christ died; and because theterrorists' actions made people outside the church mindful of their eternal destinies. (After the attacks, Egyptian churches overflowed with people who had never attended before). Then Pastor Boulos said “We love you” because even murderers and thieves love those who love them, but only followers of Jesus are taught to love our enemies. Pastor Boulos closed hismessage with “We're praying for you” because, he reasoned, if a terrorist could taste the loveof God even one time, it would drive hatred from his heart. This is one story of persecution among millions through the ages. Across 76 countries, more than 360 million evangelical Christians suffer high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith today. We are indeed at war. And on our own, it is a war that we cannot win.John Piper on Prayer as a War-Time Walkie TalkieJohn Piper has been preaching that we are war for decades. In his book “Let the Nations Be Glad!” Piper says some convicting things about our major weapon in fighting this war against our adversary the devil – a weapon that we often misuse or do not use at all. That weapon is prayer as we know from Ephesians chapter 6 (which we read earlier). It is our primary firepower against the devil. But let me read directly from JohnPiper's book, because I'm not so sure we act like life is a battlefield. Piper says:“Probably the number one reason why prayer malfunctions in the hands of believers is that we try to turn a wartime walkie talkie into a domestic intercom. Until you know that life is war, you cannot know what prayer is for. Prayer is for the accomplishment of a wartime mission…[Our] field commander (Jesus) called in the troops, gave them a crucial mission (go and bear fruit); [he] handed each of them a personal transmittercoded to the frequency of the General's headquarters, and [he] said, ‘Comrades, the general has a mission for you. He aims to see it accomplished. And to that end he has authorized me to give each of you personal access to him through these transmitters. If you stay true to his mission and seek his victory first, he will always be as close as your transmitter, to give tactical advice and to send air cover when you need it.'“But what have millions of Christians done? We have stopped believing that we are in a war. [There's] no urgency, no watching, no vigilance. No strategic planning. Just easy peace and prosperity. And what did we do with the walkie talkie? We [have] tried to rig it up as an intercom in our houses and cabins and [our] boats and [our] cars – not to call in firepower for conflict with a mortal enemy, but to ask for more comforts [andcushions] in the den.”Four Elements of Earth-Shattering Missions PrayerWith that as our introduction, I want to turn to our two texts for today. We will be looking at two biblical prayers that were prayed in times of great distress for God's people. We will look at one prayer in 2 Kings 19 and one prayer in Acts chapter 4. In both situations God's people were at war and they were engaged against enemies they knew that they could not defeat. They knew they were hopeless unless God came to their rescue. So, they turned to Him in God- exalting, enemy-defeating prayer. In both instances, these prayers moved the heart of God and he acted with great power to help his people. Both of these prayers follow a pattern and have 4 key elements that I want to examine. As we look at prayer as a weapon of war against the enemy, I want to encourage us to integrate these elements in our prayers as individuals, as families and as a church body here at TPC. We can use these prayers as roadmaps as we pray for the work of spreading the Gospel to every tribe and tongue and people and nation. Let's look at the pattern first, and then we will look at how it plays out in these two prayers. The pattern is printed on the back of today's bulletin. The Pattern is:We acknowledge the DIVINE POWER of God aloneWe affirm our DEPENDENCE on God aloneWe arouse the heart of God to DELIVER his people and to DESTROY our enemiesWe appeal to God to DISPLAY HIS GLORY for all the earth to seeHezekiah's Prayer (2 Kings 19:14-19)First, let's consider Hezekiah's prayer. Let us look at the historical backdrop. Hezekiah was King of Judah. He was a good king. In fact, the Bible says there were no kings of Judah before or after him that followed God like he did. In 2 Kings 18:5-7 we read:5 He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor among those who were before him. 6 For he held fast to the Lord. He did not depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses. 7 And the Lord was with him; wherever he went out, he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and would not serve him.”Now these last words were the epicenter of the problem that Hezekiah was facing. He rebelled against the King of Assyria. He would not bow his knee to a pagan king. The King of Assyria was named Sennacherib and the capitol of his evil empire was “Ninevah” if you have ever heard of it. It is no wonder that brother Jonah had no love for this people. So, Sennacherib was coming to extract his vengeance on this rebel king of Judah. He besieged Jerusalem with the largest most powerful army on earth. Then he sent a blasphemous letter (in 2 King 19:10-13) to Hezekiah that read: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, orthe king of Ivvah?'”In verse 14 we read about what Hezekiah did upon receiving this letter. It says: “Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord.” What a glorious demonstration of faith. He didn't sit and fret on his throne, filled with anxiety and fear. He didn't sit and strategize and mull over all of his military options to fight or surrender. He went into the temple and spread the letter before the Lord and prayed! And what did he pray?First, Hezekiah Acknowledged the DIVINE POWER of God alone:15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.”Consider these words in contrast to the blasphemy of Sennacherib who had mocked the God of the Israelites. Hezekiah here is saying to God, Sennacherib is a blasphemous liar, for we know, we believe, we have faith that you alone, not Sennacherib, are the Sovereign Lord who is above all kings and who sits enthroned over all nations.Second, Hezekiah Affirmed His DEPENDENCE on God alone: In verse 16 we read:“Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 17 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed.”After acknowledging the power of God alone, Hezekiah humbly entreats God, demonstrating his complete dependence on God. He says incline your ear O Lord. Listen to me. Hear me. We need your help, Lord. And “Open your eyes Lord and see. “ If you don't listen to us and see us, no one will hear us, see us, rescue us. The idols of the other nations did not save them. But we depend on you, the true and the living God who alone has the power to save us!Third, Hezekiah Aroused the heart of God to DELIVER his people and to DESTROY their enemies: In verse 19 we read: “So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand.”Only after acknowledging God's power and sovereignty, and his dependence on God alone, Hezekiah appeals for help. He simply says, “O Lord our God, save us, please from the hand of Sennacherib.” His heart's desire was for his people to be delivered and he knew that no one else could deliver from the mighty hoards of the Assyrians, so he simply says, “save us, please.” It is beautiful in its simplicity and earnestness. Finally, Hezekiah Appealed to God to DISPLAY HIS GLORY for all the earth to see: “That all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.” Hezekiah was praying for something bigger to happen than just for his people to be rescued. He knew the power of the Assyrian army, the arrogance of King Sennacherib, the wanton cruelty, and destruction and annihilation that they had wreaked on the entire Middle East. He knew that if God delivered His people and destroyed the Assyrians, then all the Kingdoms of the earth would know that there is only one and true and living God who answers prayer and is more powerful than any king or empire that sets themselves up against Him. He wanted God to deliver his people in the same magnificent way that he had delivered His people from the hands of Pharoah King of Egypt hundreds of years before and all of the world heard and trembled. He wanted God to be glorified far beyond the borders of Judah, and so he prayed for this very thing. So what did God do in response to Hezekiah's prayer? Two things. First, God sent the prophet Isaiah to assure Hezekiah that God had heard his prayer and would surely come to the defense of his people. We will not read Isaiah's entire message for the sake of brevity, but in verse 22 God says to Sennacherib:“Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes to theheights? Against the Holy One of Israel!”And jumping down to verse 32-34 God says:32 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. 33 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. 34 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.”The second thing that happens is that God acts with great power. He sent his angel and destroyed the Assyrian army. In verses 35-37 we read:35 And that night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 36 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh. 37 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.Indeed, now the whole world knew there was only one God, the God of Israel, that he alone had all power, and that He delivers His people from their enemies when they pray. The blasphemous king of Assyria and his mighty army were totally annihilated by Jehovah Sabbaoth—the God of Angel Armies. The Prayer of the First Church (Acts 4)Let us turn our attention now to the New Testament, to Acts chapter 4, to a prayer of the disciples, of the early church. The context here is that in chapter 3 Peter and John were going up to the temple to pray. Along the way they met a beggar who had been lame from birth who asked them for money. Peter replied:“I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.”Peter then proceeds to preach a powerful gospel sermon at the end of Acts chapter 3 to everyone gathered at the temple. This results in Peter and John being arrested because all of this greatly annoyed the Jewish religious leaders. They interrogated them and asked them where they got the power to heal this man. Peter boldly says:“Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus[a] is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.”The religious leaders and rulers then ordered Peter and John to stop preaching about Jesus and doing miracles in His name.“But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than toGod, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”“When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and prayed.”What did they pray? Their prayer is very similar to Hezekiah's, containing the same 4 elements although in a different order. Let's take a look.First, in verse 24, the church Acknowledged the DIVINE POWER of God alone: “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.” Before they ask for rescue, they begin with worship, adoration and an affirmation of faith in God's sovereignty and power over all things.Second, the church Aroused the heart of God to DELIVER his people and to DESTROY their enemies: In verses 25-28 we read: 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed'—27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. They reminded God that these very same enemies of theirs, these Jewish religions leaders, who are now persecuting them had only a short time ago set themselves up against God and his Anointed son Christ Jesus and joined with the Gentiles to destroy him. But the disciples also acknowledged that all of this was part of God's sovereign plan that he has predestined to take place.Third, the Church Affirmed their DEPENDENCE on God alone: In verse 29 they pray:“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness”We see that they have a simple prayer for help. Strengthen us to continue preaching your gospel in the midst of persecution. We need your help. We cannot win this war on our own. Protect us and strengthen us and give us boldness. We depend on you in this war for souls. Finally, the church Appealed to God to DISPLAY HIS GLORY for all the earth to see: In verse 30 we read:“while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of yourholy servant Jesus.”In addition to a plea for boldness, the church asks God to do signs and wonders through the Name of Jesus. They wanted something greater to happen than just to be able to continue to share their faith. They wanted God to act in powerful ways so that all the earth would know that salvation is found in no other name than in the powerful and beautiful name of Jesus Christ. How did God answer this prayer? We see in verse 31:“And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.”God answered their prayer for boldness. He shook the earth and poured out the Holy Spirit upon them. Along with that, he also answered their prayer for miracles. In the next chapter, Acts 5 we read that they continued to do miracles in the Name of Jesus. People from all around brought the sick and demon possessed to the disciples and they were ALL healed. Conclusion: As we draw to a close this morning, I want to offer three words of encouragement as we wage war for the souls of the lost through prayer, as we continue the battle of global missions and church planting among every tribe and language and people and nation.First. Your prayers matter. The enemy wants you to believe that your prayers do not matter, that your prayers are not heard, that God is not moved by your prayers. That is a lie. James 5:16 says: “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” In Revelation chapter 5 we get the glorious glimpse into the throne room of God. We see angels, elders, heavenly creatures and the redeemed from every nation are gathered to worship the Lamb of God. Here we see that our prayers are a fragrant incense before God. It says that angels and heavenly creatures and elders are holding golden bowls of incense before God. What is the incense that fills those bowls? The prayers of all the saints through the ages. They are a beautiful aroma to God and they move his heart. Your prayers matter and are effective in this battle. They are ever present in the throne room of heaven.Second. We do not pray alone. Both Jesus and the Holy Spirit pray with us and pray for us. In Hebrews 7:25 we read: “Consequently, he (Jesus) is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” And in Romans 8:26-27 we read: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” We do not pray alone in this war.Third, and finally, the war has already been won. As opposition to the Gospel grows stronger day by day, and persecution of the church intensifies, it is easy to be discouraged and to believe that we are losing the war. Perish the thought! King Jesus has already defeated sin and death and Satan through his death and resurrection. Satan is in the throes of death, wriggling and writhing and lashing out like the great serpent that he is. The final victory will soon be revealed, so let us persevere to the end in our faith and in our God-exalting, enemy-defeating wartime prayers. What shall we pray? And what shall we pray? Let us pray that the light of the gospel through the power of the Holy Spirit will push back the darkness that holds almost 7 billion souls in slavery to the devil. Let us pray that the lost sheep will come into the fold of Jesus. Let us pray that the Church of Christ will prevail as we storm the gates of hell. Let us pray that the elect from every tribe and people and language and nation will be saved. And let us pray that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior to the glory of our Heavenly Father. And let us pray, “Come quickly, Lord Jesus, Come Quickly, and let your sovereign rule and reign be revealed for all of eternity!” To him be the glory. Amen.
When Giuseppe Gallo founded Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto in 2016, he had dreams of creating a culturally iconic symbol for Italy, like Armani or Ferrari. It's this vision that guided his decision-making while he was building the brand and ultimately caught Pernod Ricard's eye in 2020. On this episode of the Park Street Insider Podcast, Emily Pennington and Gallo explore his journey in the alcohol business. They how his career in hospitality and experience as the global brand ambassador for Bacardi's Martini, led to Gallo's own venture. He delivers an overview of the cordial and liqueurs and explains how his brand went about becoming a category leader. Listeners will hear how Gallo used his core entrepreneurial values of vision, innovation, and ethics to capitalize on a cordial and liquor category that was just starting to pick up steam when he founded the brand in 2019. Gallo will also explain why targeting major U.S. markets like New York, Miami and Los Angeles right away was the right choice for his brand. He makes the case for a "citadel approach" to market entry and gets into his experience going door to door to pitch the brand. He also gets specific about the nature of Italics's partnership with Pernod Ricard and looks ahead to what's on tap for 2023.Episode Breakdown:0:19 - Beverage-Alcohol news from January 2:40 - Background on Cordials and Liqueurs6:52 - Gallo's 3 key entrepreneurial values 9:40 - Gallo's background in hospitality15:03 - Takeaways from Gallo's time as a brand ambassador at Bacardi 18:14 - The renaissance of Italian spirits in beverage-alcohol 20:03 - The founding of Italicus21:50 - Gallo's milestone brand decisions 22:42 - Gallo on the importance of winning the on-premise to his strategy28:07 - Why Gallo targeted major markets right away 30:15 - Partnership with Pernod Ricard 34:15 - Overview of Italics's global footprint37:40 - Tips for aspiring entrepreneurs 38:21 - Using competitions as a brand-building moment 45:00 - Looking ahead to 2023 Key Quote:"Without vision, you'll never be able to hold strong in a difficult time. Latter-day Saints revere Joseph Smith as a prophet of God. His role is absolutely central to the claims of Mormonism. LDS Church President Joseph Fielding Smith highlighted this important role:“Mormonism, as it is called, must stand or fall on the story of Joseph Smith. He was either a prophet of God, divinely called, properly appointed and commissioned, or he was one of the biggest frauds this world has ever seen. There is no middle ground.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation 1:188. Italics in original)In light of this, it makes sense to examine the story of Joseph Smith to evaluate what we should think of him. Consider five elements of his story that bear upon this question.Occult Treasure Hunting Money digging was a fairly common practice in frontier America in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It involved certain rituals or ceremonies performed to obtain buried treasure. The treasure was thought to be guarded by evil spirits. Joseph Smith as a young man offered his services for hire as a money digger. Smith's entire family practiced various folk-magic practices, including visions, dreams and occult rituals.Joseph's method in finding lost treasure involved the use of a seer stone, which he discovered in 1822 while digging a well for a neighbor. He would place this small rock in his hat and pull his hat up over his face to block out the light. He claimed that he could see supernaturally through the stone to help locate the place where the treasure was buried. The Vagrant Act, a New York law at the time, defined a disorderly person to include one who pretended to have skill in palm reading, telling fortunes, or discovering where lost goods could be found. In 1826 - during the period while Joseph was supposedly being prepared by God to receive the gold plates containing the Book of Mormon - he was arrested, brought before a judge, and charged with being a “glass-looker” and a disorderly person. The judge determined that Joseph was guilty, though no penalty was administered.Shortly after this, Joseph stopped money digging but kept the seer stone. It was with this stone that he claimed to find the gold plates and to later produce the Book of Mormon. Historians have documented many points of connection between Joseph's early occult practices and the origins of the Book of Mormon. The First Vision Joseph Smith's “First Vision” is a key part of the LDS story and establishes several unique LDS beliefs. The official account of this vision describes how the 14-year-old Smith, eager to learn the truth about which of the competing Christian churches was true, went to a secluded grove to ask God. There God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him and told him not to join any of them, for all of them were apostate. That event launched the prophetic mission of Joseph Smith to restore Jesus' original church to the earth. The official account, now included in LDS scriptures, was written by Joseph Smith in 1838, 18 years after the events it recounts. Yet historical research in recent years has uncovered eight other accounts of the First Vision. Some were written by Smith himself, or were recorded by others who heard Smith tell about it. Most of these accounts are earlier than the official version. It appears that over time, the story changed and grew into its final form. In some versions, two personages appear to Smith. In another, only “the Lord” appears. In others, the glorious personage is an angel. In the official version, the personages tell Smith that all churches are corrupt. In another version, this message comes from an angel. In other versions, this message is missing. In some versions, In one version, Smith reports that he was told, “Your sins are forgiven.” But this is absent in other versions. The official account says that Joseph was 14 when he had the vision. Another version, in Smith's own handwriting, says that...

Maori writer and scholar Alice Te Punga Somerville has launched her first poetry collection from her new home - in Canada. She has several academic books to her name but Always Italicise - How to write while colonised is a personal account of racism experienced in and out of academic institutions, and her fears for her baby daughter being brought up in Aotearoa. The title 'Always italicise foreign words', was advice from a friend, and you'll find that in Alice's poems, English is in italics, Maori is not. Alice talks to Lynn Freeman about the collection, inspired by an experience she had at a writer's festival. “Religious skepticism Religious skepticism is skepticism regarding faith-based claims. Religious skeptics may focus on the core tenets of religions, such as the existence of divine beings, or reports of earthly miracles. A religious skeptic is not necessarily an atheist or agnostic. In the confrontation between Catholicism and the Protestant Reformation, Erasmus of Rotterdam used skepticism about our ability to discover religious truth to argue for fidelity to the established church. Historically, religious skepticism has had strong connections to philosophical skepticism (see above). The issue raised by religious skepticism is essential to our understanding of reality, or ontology, as well as to what we deem to be reliable knowledge. Since religious utterances are by nature, in most cases, about that which cannot be known through our physical senses, the question that arises is about the criteria that would allow us to make such statements in the first place. Theological statements will generally be based on belief in the reliability of revelation as transmitted through holy scriptures and originating with otherworldly experiences by holy men and women (founders of religions). Tradition and institutions are also generally acknowledged sources of religious certainty. None of these, however, involve the process of cognition in the ordinary sense; hence they easily become the target of skeptical attacks. The challenge can come from skeptically inclined individuals. It can also materialize in thought movements and even in the atmosphere of entire periods in history, such as the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, notably in France. A further source of religious certainty is that which can broadly be defined as mysticism and consists in a perceived direct contact with the otherworldly reality. Such claims are experiential, rather than theoretical in nature. The skeptical position towards such claims will generally be to acknowledge the reality of any particular mystical experience, but to explain it away as mere self-deception or as a mental problem. A softer form of religious skepticism would be to suspend judgment based on one's inability to verify the validity of religious beliefs and the significance of so-called spiritual phenomena.” I'll never completely reject the afterlife concepts and the durations of the afterlives are mysterious to me. As a figuratist, I interpret all religions, all religious texts, and all of the concepts of all religions metaphorically, symbolically, allegorically, and metaphysically. Folks in the organized crime world didn't speak well. They relied on “Ebonics”, slang, broken English, and profanity to voice their thoughts. They badly needed Italics, transcripts, and translators for comprehension purposes. Derogatory slurs of all types were used within organized crime in my childhood. Uzi's, road rages, vehicle accidents, bad drivers, gossip, wankstas, smear campaigns, character assassinations, character defamations, aggressive and angry drivers, vehicle crashes, penitentiaries, the death penalty, prison crimes, solitary confinement, traffic court, the owing payments to car tickets, the vehicle killings of pedestrians, entrapments, sneak attacks, ambushes, vehicles being towed, and fatal hit-and runs (intentional and unintentional) were used and were commonplace in organized crime in my childhood too. Jesus is said to have lived, been baptized and was crucified by most scholars, but some scholars disagree with most scholars on those three things actually occurring. They also disagree on why he was baptized and crucified. They argue with each other on why he lived. All of those things cause me intense confusion. As a sex partner (on-camera and in adult films), I'll be learning, growing, and evolving for the better each and every time.) The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Today we are going to look at the proper use of visuals when we are presenting. Many people ask us at Dale Carnegie, what should I do with preparing my slide deck for my key note presentation? What's too much? What's too little? What's the best way to make this work for me? Here's some guidelines for using visuals. Sometimes less is definitely best. On a screen, try to avoid paragraphs. Try to avoid sentences. If you can, use single words. Single words can be very, very powerful. Just show one word or even just one number and then you can talk to the number, or you can talk to that word. Or use just a photograph or a simple visual and you talk to the visual. Bullet points are also minimalist and good. By the way, you don't have to crowd the screen with stuff that we can read fir ourselves. What you really want is for the audience to be focused on you, the presenter and not what's on the screen. This is very critical. We don't want the screen competing with us, so the less you have up there the better. I believe that the two second rule is a key rule. If you are putting something up on screen and an audience cannot see that and understand that within two seconds, it's probably too complicated. Strip it back until you can get the point immediately. The six by six rule means less is best. Six words on a line. Six lines on a screen. Then six words across each line. Again, keeping it very minimalist. With fonts, try to use 44 font size for the title, and 32 for the text. In terms of font types, sans serif fonts like Arial are very easy to read. Where as serif fonts like Times, Times Roman, which have got a lot of additional fancy work, can be distracting. Be very, very, very sparing with using all uppercase. It's actually screaming at your audience; it's shouting at your audience when you use strong uppercase like that. You can use it. But use it strategically. For visibility, be careful about the overuse of underline. Yes, you can use underline but use it sparingly. Bold, yes you can use bold, but the same thing, use it occasionally. Italics, well very rarely use italics. It's not so easy to read. You can use them, but use them modestly. With transitions, sometimes it's good to reveal one concept at a time. Because there is only one idea on the screen you can talk to that and you are not competing with a lot of words on the screen. Sometimes maybe have all the content up on the screen at one time, so people can read it for themselves as you go through it. Just be aware of the point of the difference in the usage. Pictures are great. Pictures have a lot of visual appeal and as we say, a picture is worth a thousand words. And a nice photograph of something that's relevant, of people, a book or picture or whatever. People can look at that and in two seconds they've got it. Now they're ready for your explanation about the relevancy of this picture to your talk today. Bar graphs make it easy to compare items. When you want to compare different variables, bar graphs are very good for that. Line charts are great to show change over time. You can compare two or three items over time and it is very easy to see that one's up, that one's down, that one is flat. Pie charts are fantastic for showing parts of a whole. What's the share of something? As long as there's not too many up on screen at once, then a pie chart works well. This is usually the big fail with a lot of presentations. They put up way too many pie charts at the same time. Avoid doing that. Colors are tricky and you rarely see people using them well. Colors like black, blue, green - they work very well on a screen. They're the best colors. Stay away from oranges and greys and particularly red. So for establishing some contrast, black and blue work together well as a contrast. Green and black also work well together as a contrast. They're good colors to mix and match on the screen: black and blue, green and black. Red however can be hard to see, so use it sparingly. Apply these simple guidelines when you use visuals and you will avoid the most common mistakes which we regularly see in presentations. When it comes to presenting very few get it right, so you can go straight to the top by just having a better understanding of what to do and what not to do.

In this episode, we talk about who Paul Washer is talking about, then about coffee, then about Grudem, and then about LOST.For our main topic, we talk about photography and copying other people's work as a means to get better in a given art field. Over the years, I've thought a lot about the Savior and the experiences he had while on this earth. During this episode, I go through several examples from the scriptures of different challenges, trials and difficulties that we experience and how the Savior understand everything that we feel and has experienced it himself. He is going to succor us and comfort us in our time of need. Trust that he understands your feelings, thoughts and challenges. “There is no sin, no guilt, no shame, no fear, no loneliness, no heartache, no loss, no depression, no sadness, no terror, no pain, no challenge, no weakness that Jesus has not experienced and overcome. He has all power over all things. If you turn to Christ and repent of your sins, He will forgive you and cleanse you and change your heart. This is the redeeming power of the Atonement. If you turn to Christ when you face challenges and need capacity beyond your own, He can strengthen you and magnify your capacity. This is the strengthening power of the Atonement.” (Elder Kim Clark, “The Redeeming and Strengthening Power of the Savior's Atonement”, April 2016 Ensign, Italics added by me)

Welcome to episode 12! Last time we mentioned that the Blind Guys were recording in their thermal underwear, but this time they're in shorts and t-shirts and Jan is reporting a 25°C increase in temperature in the Netherlands. Oh, and if you wondered about the strange voice opening the show, Óran is auditioning for a new identity. We think we like it better than his own one! We're getting used to what is becoming the BuyMie saga and Stuart has yet a further update on the long road to accessibility for this home shopping app. In the last two episodes of the show, Clare Whelan was explaining how Italics and Bold Braille signs have been implemented in UEB, and this week she's back to conclude this miniseries, by talking about the Underline symbol. We've expanded the popular TV corner segment to also cover books. Stuart has binge-watched the entire series of ‘Behind her Eyes' on Netflix and Óran is thoroughly enjoying season 2 of ‘For All Mankind' on Apple TV. Óran is also trying to find four of the remaining books in the Jack Reacher series. We discuss a couple of resources including your local public library and the Calibre Audio Library service in the UK, which is free to join. Jan and Stuart have interesting observations on reading Braille books as opposed to audio, and when one might be used over the other. What do you think? Let us know - BlindGuysChat@gmail.com. This week's guest needs virtually no introduction within Ireland anyhow. Luke O'Neill is professor of biochemistry at the School of Biochemistry and Immunology in Trinity College Dublin, and has become a household name over the last year with his regular media commentary on the Covid-19 virus and the hope that vaccines are bringing to us all. Luke joins the guys for a chat and Clodagh is here to read some emails we received for Luke. Oh, and just in case you are wondering, Luke likes the Blind Guys vaccination programme! We're extremely grateful to Luke for his time and reassurance, and we hear that perhaps Jan might be in Dublin buying Luke a pint next year! When Stuart was a young pup in school, the clubhouse was the name of the little shop where everyone bought their chocolate and all those things that we really shouldn't be eating before our dinner, but Clubhouse means something very different now, and Clodagh is here to introduce this brand new audio-only social network. What do the Blind Guys think, and, would you join a Blind Guys Chat room on Clubhouse? We have time for two quick emails, and we're delighted to share a link about audio description on YouTube which might help Cian - one of our listeners. Remember, the Blind Guys always love your feedback, so get in touch by email to BlindGuysChat@Gmail.com or by tweeting @BlindGuysChat. Looking forward to chatting again in two weeks time.

WINNING WITH THE WORD “Winning with the Word” is a weekly blog that will help you to be a winner in life by applying God's principles for living the abundant life as found in the Bible, God's manual for life. AN INVITATION TO YOU: To follow this blog, click here. If this blog has blessed you, please encourage your family and friends to subscribe as well. Thank you! ______________________________________ Do you prefer listening instead of reading? Then click below to listen to today's blog post: https://media.blubrry.com/winning_with_the_word/content.blubrry.com/winning_with_the_word/WWW_Podcast_4_2020_01_27_Sex_and_Soul_Ties.mp3 AMENDMENT: It has been brought to my attention that a Biblical marriage consists of more than just sexual union. There must also be Ceremony (in the sense of the father's or the family's approval of the betrothal), Covenant (the commitment before God of the man and the woman to each other), and Consummation (sexual union). Please prayerfully consider these points as you read or listen. Thank you. ______________________________________________ If you've had sex outside of marriage, this podcast is for you. So, listen up. It could give you insights into many of the problems you're experiencing in your life—problems you've had trouble solving or resolving. If you've had sex outside of marriage, you formed a soul tie—or more than one—with the person or persons with whom you had sex. Unbeknown to you, that soul tie may be the cause of the emotional, psychological, and physical problems that are now troubling you or maybe even tormenting you—problems like nightmares, panic attacks, anxiety, insomnia, unusual fear or phobias, addictive behaviors---or physical problems, like migraine headaches, infertility, heart palpitations, or digestive issues, among many others. You may have tried and tried to get rid of these problems, but they have been resistant to all kinds of treatment. But be encouraged! What you are about to hear may be the answer you've been looking for. So, what is a soul tie? A soul tie is an emotional and psychological connection that forms in a relationship, especially a sexual relationship. For the purposes of this podcast, we will confine ourselves to discussing the soul tie that occurs in a sexual relationship. Before getting into the meat of our discussion, let me explain that we human beings are made up of three parts: spirit, soul, and body. This truth is found in the Bible, God's manual for man, in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5: verse 23 where the Apostle Paul writes: "May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Italics mine). Just as God is a triune—or three-part Being (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)—so we who are made in His image, are triune beings made up of a spirit, a soul, and a body. Your spirit is who you really are, the core of your being, the real you. Your soul is made up of your mind, your will, and your emotions. Your body is what houses your spirit and your soul. Your body is what I like to call your "earth suit". Whenever a man and a woman engage in the sexual act, a bond is formed. That bond is either godly or ungodly. If the sexual act occurs in marriage, then the bond is godly. It is a bond sanctioned and approved by God because He has ordained that sex should be engaged in only in marriage. If the sexual act occurs outside of marriage, then the bond is ungodly. In other words, God declares the sexual act outside of marriage to be illegal and illicit, and He does not approve of it. When a person has engaged in sexual activity outside of marriage—whether through fornication or adultery—a soul tie is formed. While the expression "soul tie" does not appear in the Bible, the concept of a soul tie does. In 1 Corinthians chapter 6: verse 16, the Bible says this: “He who joins himself to a harlot, becomes one body with her. For as it is written, ‘the two shall become one flesh.'”
