This week, Nate Herbert continues our new series looking at the Gospel of Mark. This week, he looks at Mark 8: 22- 37 and looks at the declaration/ confession of Peter declaring that Jesus is the Messiah.Peter boldly confesses the truth: Jesus is the Messiah. This is the hinge of the entire Gospel. Yet the surrounding passages reveal Peter still doesn't fully understand what this means. Mark's focus in this moment is the revelation of Jesus' true identity — not simply a prophet, not just a teacher, but the Son of God come to save.Scripture for today:Mark 8: 22 - 37Recorded on 15 March 2026
How deep is God's forgiveness? Drawing upon a real historical situation from the third century A.D. and on the story of Peter's threefold denial, Zack attempts an answer.

Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined once again by author and esoteric scholar Peter Mark Adams, whose newest work - Ritual and Epiphany in the Mysteries of Mithras: The Secret Cult of Saturn in Imperial Rome - offers a profound look into one of the most enigmatic mystery traditions of the ancient world. We explore the sacred cosmology of Mithras, the structure and symbolism of the cult's initiatory grades, and how these rites relate to the broader lineage of Orphic and Platonic spirituality. Along the way, we discuss ritual space, visionary experiences, and how these ancient practices can inform and aid seekers and practitioners today. Please note: Later in the episode, we also touch on topics such as entheogens, intense ritual work, and transformational spiritual practices. Thequestion I have today is, what will it take for the Lord to bring you torepentance, to call you back to Himself, for you to recognize your failure justas Peter did? Well, God used a rooster to get Peter's attention after he haddenied the Lord three times. You might remember in the Old Testament, God useda donkey to talk to Balaam to get his attention and remind him he was going inthe wrong direction. What will the Lord use to get your attention to say,"Hey, you're headed in the wrong direction. You need to listen to Me andremember My word." Well, that's what we find here in these last verses 54-62. AtPeter's third denial he used an oath and said, "I don't know the Man! Idon't know what you are talking about!" It was then that the roostercrowed for the second time and the Lord's prediction was fulfilled (Mark14:30). At that moment, Jesus, being led away to the next trial, turned andlooked at Peter; and His look broke Peter's heart. While the bystanders werewatching Jesus, Peter slipped out and went off and wept bitterly. It is toPeter's credit that all the Lord had to do was look at him to bring him to theplace of repentance. Forone rooster to crow at the right time while the other birds in the cityremained silent was certainly a miracle. But the crowing of the rooster wasmuch more than a miracle that fulfilled our Lord's words; it was also a specialmessage to Peter, a message that helped to restore him to fellowship again. What encouragements did the crowing of the rooster give to the Apostle Peter? First,it was an assurance to him that Jesus Christ was still in control of thingseven though He was a prisoner, bound and seemingly helpless before His captors.Peter could recall witnessing his Lord's authority over the fish, the winds, and the waves, and even over disease and death. No matter how dark the hour wasfor Peter, Jesus was still in control! This is good for us to remember too, especiallywhen we have fallen so far away from the Lord back into the world, Jesus isstill on His throne and has total control of everything that concerns our lifeand future. Second, the crowing of the rooster assured Peter that he could be forgiven. Peter hadnot been paying close attention to the Word of God. He had argued with it,disobeyed it, and even run ahead of it, but now he "remembered the wordof the Lord" (Luke 22:61), and this brought him hope. Why? Becausewith the word of warning was also a promise of restoration! Peter would beconverted and strengthen his brethren. (Luke 22:31-32). We should remember that “theLord ever lives to make intercession for us” (Hebrews 7:25). We also shouldbe encouraged with 1 John 2:1. Finally, the miracle of the rooster told Peter that a new day was dawning, for afterall, that is what the rooster's call means each day. It was not a new day forJudas or for the enemies of the Lord, but it was a new day for Peter as herepented and wept bitterly. "A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thouwilt not despise" (Ps. 51:17). On Resurrection morning, the angel senta special message to encourage Peter (Mark 16:7), and the Lord Himself appearedto Peter that day and restored him to fellowship (Luke 24:34). Eachone of us, at one time or another, will fail the Lord and then hear (in one wayor another) "the crowing of the rooster." Satan will tell usthat we are finished, that our future has been destroyed, but that is not God'smessage to us. It was certainly not the end for Peter! His restoration was socomplete that on the Day of Pentecost he was able to say to the Jews, "Butyou denied the Holy One and the Just!" (Acts 3:14) Peter did not have1 John 1:9 to read, but he did experience it in his own heart. So the question, what will it take to get your attention? The rooster crowed and Peterremembered the word of the Lord. Will you? Godbless!
In this episode, I welcome back author and scholar Peter Mark Adams for a rich and far-reaching conversation centred on his upcoming book from Theion Publishing "Ritual & Epiphany in the Mysteries of Mithras – The Secret Cult of Saturn in Imperial Rome" an extraordinary and deeply thoughtful study of the cult of Mithras. Peter takes us through the ancient layers beneath Mithraic practice — its origins, iconography, cosmology, and initiatory structure — tracing a lineage from early Mesopotamian myths such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, through the cultic worship of Saturn, and into the esoteric heart of Imperial Rome. What emerges from his research is a profound view of Mithraism not simply as a Roman mystery cult, but as the survival of a much older, animistic, star-oriented cosmology. It is a vision of reality structured around spirit, fate, celestial forces, and the metamorphosis of the human soul.Peter takes us through the complex ideas behind his thesis weaving in insights from recent advances in anthropology, ethnography, and comparative religion. He draws particularly from the Orphic mysteries to illuminate the metaphysical architecture underpinning the Mithraic rites. We unpack how the mysteries functioned as both a lived, embodied practice and a carefully guarded initiatic system, intended to bring about deep spiritual transformations in their adherents. The conversation explores the mythic grammar encoded in the Tauroctony — the slaying of the bull — not as a static religious image but as a dynamic, performative act tied to the movement of the heavens and the soul's journey through the stars. In the Plus show, Peter also shares fascinating insights into the seven grades of Mithraic initiation, each representing different spiritual and cosmic stations, and the curious fact that while the cult is famous for these grades, only two formal initiation rituals are known. We delve into the frescoes at St. Capua Vetere, rare depictions that provide intimate glimpses into the ritual life of Mithraic initiates, and discuss how sacred art served not merely as decoration but as an active, living technology for transformation.Along the way, we touch on the challenges faced by modern researchers and practitioners in articulating and re-contextualising these ancient experiences in a world that has largely lost the language for mystery. We talk about the difficulty of bridging the gap between ancient participatory worldviews and the post-Enlightenment skepticism that dominates contemporary thought — and how, paradoxically, the sciences of anthropology and archaeology often come closest to glimpsing the ancient mysteries, even as they struggle to fully comprehend them.Show notes:Peter's site https://petermarkadams.comPeter's instagram https://www.instagram.com/petermarkadams/Peter's Patreon https://www.patreon.com/c/petermarkadams/postsTheion Publishing https://theionpublishing.com/shop/pma-ritualepiphany/?fbclid=IwY2xjawJt5h9leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHrcrTB0SZCnZKoBiV8ekJtAVHGQawQVzitb5lGAscZwhU94lYmX-PLrQDWW9_aem_NJX2uq5lcQtsID72NJrHJASola-Busca Workshop, Turin https://www.houseofzophiel.com/sola-busca.htmlCosmic or Orphic egg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_eggPhanes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhanesTauroctony https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TauroctonySt. Capua Vetere https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria_Capua_VetereEpic of Gilgamesh https://www.britannica.com/topic/Epic-of-GilgameshOrphism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OrphismMithras https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MithraismHenosis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HenosisLeontocephaline https://www.mdpi.com/2673-9461/2/2/3Chora https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KhôraApogenesis https://www.iasdurham.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Hannah_From-Here-to-the-Hereafter-Genesis-and-Apogenesis-in-Ancient-Philosophy-and-Architecture.pdfKeep in touch?https://linktr.ee/darraghmasonMusic by Obliqka https://soundcloud.com/obliqka

Most likely each and every one of us has walked into a building or a structure which had the capacity to touch something inside of you in some ineffable way. For Millenia, cultures around the world have constructed buildings which have this ability to cut through aesthetics of their appearance and bestow upon those who look upon or enter inside, a sort of spiritual reverence. How does this happen and what sort of elements make up these structures? Helping us break ground on this curious topic is the author and scholar of esotericism, Peter Mark Adams!

6. Jesus’ Twelve Disciples Matthew 4:18-22: - As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Who were Jesus’ Disciples? There are three main lists of disciples (Matthew 10:1-4, Mark 3:13-19, Luke 6:12-16) who were chosen near the start of Jesus ministry. The Gospel of John offers no comprehensive list but does refer to them as “The Twelve” (John 6:67, John 6:70, and John 6:71) Andrew: he was a fisherman from Bethsaida (Matthew 4:18). It was he who introduced his brother, Simon Peter, to Jesus (John 1:40-42). He was a disciple of John the Baptist. Bartholomew: he was the son of Talemai and possibly was also called Nathaniel (John 1:45-1:51) James: he was the son of Alphaeus. He is also know as James the Less (Mark 15:40) or James the Just. He would later be the leader of the Jerusalem church (Acts) James & John: the sons of Zebedee. Both were fisherman (Matthew 4:21; Luke 5:1-11) and Jesus called them the sons of Boanerges or sons of thunder (Mark 3:17)! John is known as the “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23, John 19:26, John 21:7 & 20) Judas Iscariot (Luke 6:13, 16): he was the son of Simon (John 6:71 & John 13:26). He was the disciple who betrayed Jesus (Matthew 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11) and was replaced after the Resurrection by Matthias (Acts 1:26). Matthew: he was a tax collector (Matthew 9:9) and the son of Alphaeus (Mark 2:14. He also authored the gospel by the same name (Matthew 1:1) Philip: from Bethsaida (John 1:44; John 12:21). Notably, it was he who introduced Greeks to Jesus (John 12:20-22) Simon: also known as Simon the Zealot (Matthew 10:4) and possibly from Jerusalem. Simon: brother of Andrew and also an uneducated fisherman from Bethsaida (Matthew 4:18; Acts 4:13). Later, he was renamed Peter by Jesus (John 1:42) and would later lead the disciples (Acts 1:15-26). He wrote 2 of the books of the New Testament known as 1 Peter and 2 Peter. Thaddeus: listed as a disciple in Mark 3:18 and also known as Lebbaeus (Matthew 10:3) and Judas brother of James (Luke 6:16) Thomas also known as Thomas Didymus. Didymus means ‘twin’ and it is conjectured that he was a twin of Matthew. He is best known however, as doubting Thomas for initially disbelieving the resurrection of Jesus before he saw the Lord and proclaimed Him as such (John 11:16, John 20:24, John 21:2). How were they chosen? In the time of the New Testament, it was usual practice for a disciple to take the initiative and choose his master and then voluntarily join that school. However, in reverse of this practice, Jesus Himself chose those who were to follow him by issuing a command to “Come, follow me.” (Matthew 4:18-22; Matthew 16:24; Matthew 19:21; Mark 1:17; Mark 8:34; Mark 10:21; Luke 9:23; Luke 18:22). Jesus chose them after a night of prayer and were given to Him by God (John 17:9). The reason that God gave them to Him as His disciples was so that they would produce fruit for God’s Kingdom (John 15:16). Jesus also placed some demands on those who wanted to follow Him. For some these demands proved too much so they went away, like the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-22). Others, who were initially attracted to Jesus, left saying “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it? (John 6:60). What were they chosen for? As we read the Gospels, we know that they often got things wrong. Jesus often rebuked them, such as when the storm hit when they were in the boat. He rebuked them for panicking (Mark 4:38) and for fearing and lacking faith (Mark 4:40). This, in spite of having seen Jesus do the things He had done. In Matthew’s Gospel the disciples mistake Him for a ‘ghost’ as He walked to them on the water (Matthew 14:22-36) and Jesus rebukes Peter for lacking faith, as Peter looked at the storm (Matthew 14:30) rather than to Jesus Himself. When Peter tried to dissuade Jesus from going to the cross, Jesus’ subsequent rebuke was meant for all the disciples and not just Peter (Mark 8:33). They did not yet understand the relationship between suffering and glory. By the time Peter had written 1 Peter, he did (1Peter 1:6-8, 1 Peter4:13-5:10). In calling them to Himself, Jesus called them into a common discipleship of which they are to “love one another” (John 15:17). The reason for this is so that people will know they are His disciples, by their love for one another, (John 13:34, John 15:16) and this will produce the desired fruit for God’s kingdom and an effective prayer life (John 15:16). Take up your cross: In Matthew 16:24, Jesus called his disciples to take up their cross, just as he was going to be taking up his cross at Calvary. By this he meant that his disciples must be prepared to sacrifice and be willing to suffer and die. Called to a life of repentance: Symbolic of this is Peter who, when first encountered by Jesus in Luke 5:1-11, declared of Jesus "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" Called to a life of obedience: Jesus called for obedience of God (Matthew 7:21, Luke 6:46). This obedience means to follow him in all areas of life. Called to a life of service: When they were sent out in Matthew 10, the disciples were to: tell the Good News’; heal the sick; raise the dead; drive out demons and freely give. Called regardless of background: The disciples were from a broad cross-section of society. Some as we have seen were fishermen, another a tax collector (who were thought of as traitors to Israel!), others zealots or sons of zealots. For more to think about please do read John 15:18-24. Ask yourself the following questions and see how you respond or react to them. Then why not share your answers with your spouse or a close friend, so that you can pray over any issues together. Q1. Looking back on my life, how did Jesus choose me to be His disciple and why? Q2. As I continue my life as a Christian Disciple, what things are holding me back from total obedience and service to Him? Q3. Do I truly show love towards others in my life as a Christian Disciple? Here's the question we'll be exploring today: How do you know if your faith is authentic? Email us at podcast@pursueGOD.org.Donate Now --Jesus himself predicted this kind of thing: Matthew 7:21 (NLT) Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. So the question for us today: How can I know if I'm a Judas or a Peter? We'll get to that. But first let's get to the text. There are some really cool nuggets on the way to answering our personal question for the day.Mark 14:12 (NLT) On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”We talked about this meal last week…They had no clue that Jesus was going to redefine history with this mealThey had no idea we would be talking about this moment 2000 years later!Mark 14:13-16 (NLT) So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.Strange instructions. Sounds like a CIA mission. Notice the simple obedience.(Pillar New Testament Commentary) A male water carrier would have caught their eye, for carrying water was normally the labor of women or slaves.Nugget: (Pillar New Testament Commentary) The hall so described resembles the meeting place of the early church described in Acts 1:13 (Upper Room) and 12:12 (after Peter's prison escape, “...he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.”). If it is the same dwelling, then it belonged to Mary, the mother of John Mark, the probable author of the Second Gospel. The suggestion that John Mark was the carrier of the water jar is possible, but without evidence. Now I want to jump down to v22, the meal itself. We'll come back to v17-21 at the end. But while we're talking about the Passover meal, we need to connect some dots here. Four cups of wine were traditionally consumed during the Passover meal, each with a specific significance. The cups represented different aspects of the Exodus story and God's promises. The four cups are typically labeled as follows:1. Cup of Sanctification (Kiddush Cup): This is the first cup, and it is associated with the sanctification of the holiday.
Peter takes us on a journey into the “Egyptian Mysteries”. He discusses the ancient ceremonies of ritual invocation and deity possession, how ritual performances facilitated direct access to the gods, the role of ancestors in ancient Egyptian religion, how the “ancestral field” influenced spirit communication and roles within Egyptian society, the importance of the possession of the Pharaoh by divine energy, the parts of the soul, the interaction between agrarian and pastoralist ritual styles, and the importance of devoting oneself to “service”. Welcome to Occult of Personality: esoteric podcast extraordinaire. Now, in episode number 222, we have another very special interview for you! You love his books, and he always educates and entertains us beyond all expectations—the one and only, Peter Mark Adams returns to the podcast to discuss his most recent masterpiece—Hagia Sophia, Sanctum of Kronos: Spiritual Dissent in an Age of Tyranny! You can find Peter online at https://petermarkadams.com/."Peter Mark Adams is an author, poet, and essayist who specializes in the ethnography and visuality of ritual, sacred landscape, esotericism, consciousness, and healing. His latest book, Hagia Sophia, Sanctum of Kronos: Spiritual Dissent in an Age of Tyranny (https://scarletimprint.com/publications/p/hagia-sophia-sanctum-of-kronos), is a study of the sacred architecture of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, which dates back to the sixth century. Adams examines the sacred traditions encoded within the structure, from the ancient Rites of Eleusis to the school of Alexandria and offers a fresh and penetrating perspective on how architectural details and history can be read and understood. The book traces a journey across the Hellenistic world as its classical culture teeters on the brink of extinction at the hands of religious zealots."Once again, from start to finish, this interview is LIT! Peter Mark Adams demonstrates over and over through the conversation how his mastery of his subject is all-encompassing. From Adams's work, we can now more fully understand the significance of this holy structure and how its history and the context of spirituality which it embodies is sublime and majestic. Through understanding and appreciating human achievement in service of devotion, we participate to some degree in its intention and purpose as well. Peter Mark Adams is one of our favorite guests and this interview demonstrates why. I cannot recommend Hagia Sophia, Sanctum of Kronos highly enough! If you appreciate the most original and important esoteric scholarship available today, then you're already a fan of his work. If not, you really should be.I know this intro is long enough already and I don't mean to delay you from hearing the actual interview, but I need to take one moment here to recognize the great fortune we have to read and learn what it is that Peter Mark Adams has uncovered for us, yet again. In a superlative third book, Adams has shown us a level of research, insight, and ability to understand ancient religion and spirituality that is perhaps unmatched. It is a true blessing to share in the fruits of his labors and we celebrate his work! In this episode, Pastor Jeff Cranston and Tiffany Coker delve into the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel of Mark emphasizes Jesus as a servant who shows compassionate service to people through his miracles. Our hosts discuss why the book was written and provide some background on its author, John Mark, whose style differs from other biblical authors in that he emphasizes action rather than words and frequently uses the Greek word "ethos," meaning "immediately." They also highlight how the central unifying element in the mosaic of Mark's gospel is Christ himself, and its overall theme is to call Christ's followers to faithfulness and perseverance in the face of suffering and persecution. So, grab a cup of coffee and join us at the kitchen table for an enlightening conversation on biblical theology.[00:04 - 08:37] Exploring the Gospel of Mark• Mark's gospel emphasizes Jesus as a servant and his authority as the Son of God• The book is a brief synopsis of Christ's life and could have been meant for reading in one sitting[08:38 - 17:15] Uncovering the Origins and Authorship of Mark's Gospel• Analyzing the author of the Gospel of Mark, John Mark, a contemporary of Paul and Peter• Mark was likely writing Peter's recollection of events• Mark was the cousin of Barnabas and worked with Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey• The Gospel of Mark was likely written in Rome during a period of persecution against Christians under Emperor Nero• Mark's style is different from other biblical authors[17:15 - 25:53] Exploring the Unique Literary Features of Mark's Gospel• Mark's gospel is a narrative with a collection of units or groupings.• Mark uses intercalation, which means sandwiching one story within another, to interpret stories mutually.• Triads are common in Mark's gospel, where events are presented in groups of threes and often connected to the failure of the disciples.• The overall theme of Mark's gospel is to preserve the gospel tradition, confirm Jesus as the mighty Messiah and Son of God, and call Christ followers to faithfulness and perseverance in the face of suffering and persecution.[25:54 - 29:09] Discovering the Heart of Discipleship in Mark's Gospel • Discipleship in Mark's gospel is about having a relationship with Jesus• Fellowship with Christ marks the heart of a disciple's life• Trusting, confessing, and following Jesus' conduct are part of a fellowship with him• Discipleship means being prepared to face rejection as Jesus didResource: The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh CobbleQuotes: "These are just humans. The latest episode is another lovely discussion with author, poet, and scholar Peter Mark Adams. His latest work, "Hagia Sophia / Sanctum of Kronos: Spiritual Dissent in an Age of Tyranny," is a fascinating exploration of the pagan Mystery cults and their diverse survivals in later philosophical traditions, as well as a discussion of the ways in which the construction of the Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) encapsulates the metaphysics of spiritual union taught within the Eleusinian tradition – all in the face of intense persecution and oppression. Today we welcome back the one and only Peter Mark Adams! In his new book Hagia Sophia / Sanctum of Kronos, he presents a remarkable study of the esoteric beliefs and spiritual traditions contained within the architectural and decorative features of Istanbul's iconic Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia / Sanctum of Kronos tells the story of the building's hidden purpose: to conceal and preserve a sacred mystery in the face of rising Christian tyranny, right under the nose of Constantinople's Christian ascendancy. Represented in the sacred geometry, light, materials, and architecture of this astounding and powerful building, this sacred teaching is revealed by Adams' in his remarkable thesis. As with Adams's previous books, this is a meticulously researched, captivating and illuminating piece of work. Punctuated with carefully selected, evocative photography and illustrations, it deconstructs the Hagia Sophia to reveal its esoteric heart. Culturally, the structure acts as a repository for the metaphysical preoccupations of a Hellenistic culture that evolved from the great mystery cults of antiquity to become the metaphysical engine of subsequent European thought. In the Plus show we discussed why Saturn is a focal point of Peter's research and how the other plays a part in his creative process. We get into his next project in this Saturnian current and the relationship with providence and fate. We wrap up the show on the subject of energy work and healing and how this is foundational to Peter's work and indeed his life Show notes: Scarlet Imprint title information Sanctum of Kronos pre-order petermarkadams.com/ Icons of Sound - Total Sacred Immersion Hagia Sophia Power of the Healing Field Keep in touch? https://linktr.ee/darraghmason Music by Obliqka https://soundcloud.com/obliqka --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/spirit-box/message

Peter Mark Adams joins us today on the occasion of the imminent release of his new book, Hagia Sophia: Sanctuary of Kronos. Like The Game of Saturn before it, this is an exploration of curious survivals of pagan cosmologies hidden in seemingly plain sight -in this case Hagia Sophia in his home of Istanbul. Check out the show notes at runesoup.com for some companion images. Along the way, we also discuss what happened to the Mysteries when Eleusis was closed, the School of Athens and whether any such thing as Neoplatonism even existed. Enjoy! To someone who didn't know the Bible well, what happened to Jesus that afternoon would have seemed to be nothing more than a tragic series of events. That person would have seen only an innocent man being badly mistreated. But if someone did know the Scriptures, he or she would have been shocked as they watched key prophecies being fulfilled in front of their eyes, especially the way Jesus' body was treated after He died. Certain things were done to Him by people who had no idea of the spiritual meaning behind what they were doing, things that God, through His prophets, had described in detail hundreds of years earlier. Unknowingly, those soldiers fulfilled two prophecies which were such powerful testimonies about Jesus that John assumed that there would be people who suspected that he had put those events into his account, but that they hadn't really occurred. After all, John is the only one of the gospel writers who mentions them, probably because neither Matthew, Peter (Mark's source), or whomever Luke interviewed (Lk 1:1-3) had been close enough to the cross to see what John saw. So as soon as he finished describing what happened, he inserted these words, “…and the one having seen [these things] has borne witness, and his witness is true, and that one knows that he speaks truly, so that you may also believe. For these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled…” (literal) (v35). He's saying that he saw the soldiers do those things with his own eyes, and if we trust his integrity as an apostle of Jesus Christ, we will believe him. John wasn't the only one that afternoon who saw those events and recognized the prophecies that were being fulfilled. Two of Israel's top, religious leaders were also watching and understood the meaning of what they were seeing. They had memorized and studied the Bible since they were children, so when they saw the soldiers shatter the legs of the other two criminals but leave Jesus untouched; and then when one of the soldiers thrust a spear into Jesus' side, they could hear in their minds the same statements John quoted for us: “Not a bone of Him shall be broken” (Ex 12:46; Nu 9:12) and “They shall look upon Him whom they pierced” (Zec 12:10). If they had been unsure of Jesus before the crucifixion, after the soldiers finished their gory work no doubt remained, and they knew what they had to do, and they knew they had to do it before the sun set.
