The very first "solo show" of Coffee and Divination! I wanted to speak a little about a topic that's come up with a number with my guests recently: how we relate to our divinatory tools, and also how we might deepen our connections to them. As a Witch who practices a nature-based, pantheist, and animist Tradition, the act of relating to forms of divination, and the Spirits who speak through them, is something I think a great deal about both as a teacher and a practitioner. In today's episode, I share five things that I feel are key to developing healthy relationships in divination. There is obviously a great deal to say on the topic, so this is only a beginning... I am also excited to officially announce the podcast's new Patreon page! To show my thanks to our listeners, I'll be hosting a special Patreon-only Zoom "Coffee and Divination" chat hangout each month, (beginning with a Launch Party on April 1st,) where we can chat, discuss magic planning, and where myself and my rotating guest co-hosts will throw cards or otherwise answer listener questions during the hour...  For our Patreon members, I'll also be releasing additional content including monthly templates and spreadsheets for divination, advance notice of guests, extra episodes, and more. Check out the Patreon page to learn more and to sign up! For the Greater Groove: The Future of Strings

Natalie Haas has helped define this new role for strings that I keep talking about--the future of string playing, which I believe is all about being a genuine rhythm player, not just a melody/virtuosic player.  Natalie is the consummate rhythm string player, and her 20-year duo with Scottish fiddle master Alasdair Fraser is testament to that. She breaks it down, clearly demonstrates a groove for us, and is a good sport on her segment of Not My Gig, where I quiz the long-time teacher at the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School about...The Valley of the Sun, an early Hollywood western.

Notes: Lissa Schneckenburger's song has a personal back story that we get into during the conversation part of the episode -- along with discussion of change-making as integral to music-making, the similarities and differences of violin and voice as instruments, why Lissa chose songs with words for her recent solo album... Lissa spills over with ideas, generosity, connections, and a deeply caring heart -- our time together was a treat for me. This song feels particularly appropriate at this turn of the year, when we are tired of COVID and injustice and it is easy to be fearful... "we are rising, we are shining, we have the power"... "we will not let this be the end". Something a little different on this episode -- after she invited us to join, I included myself singing with Lissa and experimenting (sometimes more successfully than others) with harmonies... my hope is that that encourages you, too, to explore. Brendan Taaffe says you're only ever one note away from a great harmony! If you want to hear the song already beautifully harmonized and sing along with a polished version after you've learned it on the podcast, check out the links below for Low Lily's video. Songwriter Info: Lissa Schneckenburger is a fiddle player and singer whose roots are in folk music in Maine. She lives in Brattleboro, Vermont, now, and says, “To me, music creates community. Music is what people sing along to, dance to, fall in love to… music brings people together." Giving concerts on her own or as part of the trio, Low Lily, as well as supporting other musicians with practice challenges (and jokes) through her website, Lissa consistently does her part to build community. Her solo album, Thunder In My Arms, is a tender, powerful collection of songs about attachment, parenting, and trauma. We talk about its origin and development in this episode's conversation. A look ahead at the first half of 2022! As we close out the strangeness of 2021, it was wonderful to hear astrologer Brittany Goss' analysis of what's to come in 2022. As usual, I found the discussion with Brittany to be inspiring and heartening, while still being a no-nonsense discussion of some of the issues presenting themselves in the astro-weather to come.  I thoroughly enjoy these chats with Brittany, and hope you find this one as helpful as I did.-- Brittany Goss' website: https://rebelastrology.net-- Brittany's Rebel Astrology Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rebelastrology -- Brittany's free 5-day Star Power experience (Jan. 3 - 7, 2022) : https://bit.ly/3JpQe55-- Website: http://www.coffeeanddivination.com-- Theme music: Come with Me by JoAnna Farrer. A great conversation with diviner and author Lilith Dorsey. Lilith is the author of numerous books, including "Orishas, Goddesses, and Voodoo Queens: The Divine Feminine in the African Religious Traditions" , "Voodoo and African Traditional Religion" , and "Water Magic: Elements of Witchcraft."  They have been a professional psychic and teacher for over three decades and are a frequent presenter at festivals and gatherings, including HexFest, WitchCon, Sirius Rising, Witch'sFest USA, and many others. I had been looking forward to this conversation for a while, and am so glad that Lilith could join me for a wide-ranging discussion of Santería, art, witchcraft, and ways and means of divination. On this episode of Coffee & Divination, we welcome back author and magician John Michael Greer. He's written numerous works on a variety of topics, including ecology, politics, appropriate technology, oil depletion, Druidry, divination, and magic. (He has written over 50 titles so far.) In this discussion, we delve into some of the magical underpinnings of politics today, as well as in the more distant past. His recent thought-provoking book, "The King in Orange: The Magical and Occult Roots of Political Power," was our jumping off point, and I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation.-- John Michael Greer's Ecosophia blog: https://www.ecosophia.net-- Link to "The King in Orange": https://www.innertraditions.com/books/the-king-in-orange-- John Michael Greer's works: https://bookshop.org/shop/jmg-- JMG's Dreamwidth page: https://ecosophia.dreamwidth.org-- Theme music: Come with Me by JoAnna Farrer. On this episode of Coffee & Divination, we welcome back author Peter Mark Adams. Peter is the author of “The Game of Saturn: Decoding the Sola-Busca Tarocchi” and "Dancing out the Mysteries of Dionysus."  This was a fantastic discussion of the Dionysian themed frescos of Pompeii's Villa of the Mysteries, which are not only incredibly beautiful works of art, they constitute the single most important theurgical narrative to have survived in the Western esoteric tradition. It was a great conversation that delved into some beautiful territory, and I hope you enjoy it!PLEASE NOTE: In the video version of this episode, found on Vimeo and linked here in the show notes, I include images of some of the frescos as we discuss them, so I recommend watching the video version if you have the chance.-- Video version of this interview: https://vimeo.com/641341824-- Peter's website: https://petermarkadams.com-- Scarlet Imprint page for his works: https://scarletimprint.com/peter-mark-adams-- Direct link to Mystai: https://scarletimprint.com/publications/p/mystai-- Peter's upcoming book, The Power of the Healing Field : https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Power-of-the-Healing-Field/Peter-Mark-Adams/9781644113585-- Review of ‘Stranger in the Mask of a Deer' by Richard Skelton - review written by Peter Mark Adams: https://www.paralibrum.com/reviews/stranger-in-the-mask-of-a-deer-by-richard-skelton -- "Portrait of a Priestess: Women and Ritual in Ancient Greece" by Joan Breton Connelly  :  https://www.worldcat.org/title/portrait-of-a-priestess-women-and-ritual-in-ancient-greece/oclc/1036764765--  "A Place at the Altar: Priestesses in Republican Rome" by Meghan J. We kicked off Season 2 with two of the finest purveyors of Scottish fiddle music you’ll set your ears on – Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas. They travel the world teaching and performing so we were thrilled that they stopped in and visited us in Elkin. We also welcomed the singer-songwriter Bill West and the Dan River Girls to the show. The Dan River Girls have been long-time students of Alasdair and Natalie, at their renowned fiddle camp on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, so this show has some spirited collaboration!
