On this episode of Tent Show Radio, Rock n Roll recording artists and globetrotting journeymen, Devon Allman & Donavon Frankenreiter perform a career spanning set, showcasing songs off their collaborative EP Rollers. For nearly four decades Donavon Frankenreiter has been traveling the globe, first as a professional surfer and now as a musician. With over a dozen albums under his belt, Frankenreiter has worked it on the touring trail worldwide for three decades. Donavon is a brand ambassador for Flying Embers as well as Sanuk Footwear and also co-owner of Humble Brands, Caddis Eyewear and several other companies.   Blues Music Award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer Devon Allman (son of Rock legend Gregg Allman) has appeared at the world's biggest festivals and has co-founded the supergroups Royal Southern Brotherhood and The Allman Betts Band amassing a recording catalog of 11 albums. He writes a column for Guitar Player Magazine, is endorsed by Gibson guitars, and serves on the board of directors for the National Blues Museum.   In June of 2023, Allman & Frankenreiter released their collaborative EP, Rollers, a 6-song collection, produced by Luther Dickinson of the multiple Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars and mastered by Brad Sarno at Blue Jade Audio, featuring previously released singles “Calling All You Riders” and “See It All” as well as a guest appearance from Maggie Rose on the track “We Belong.” The songs on Rollers serve as the soundtrack for the duo's world-record breaking See It All Tour, where Allman and Frankenreiter set the Official World Record for fastest time to play a concert in each of the 50 states. The execution was brutal, but the rock ‘n' roll recording artists and longtime friends, along with their talented band mates – Matt Grundy (bass), John Lum (drums), David Gomez (percussion, sax), Jackson Stokes (guitar), were successful in breaking the previous record, playing 50 shows in 49 days in the summer of 2023, one of those dates being under the tent at Big Top Chautauqua.   EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Keenan McIntyre - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/   Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/   Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism   The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/   Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/   Kylmala Truss - https://www.kylmalatruss.com/  SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

Shaka Myrick and Delyn Stephenson, Romare Bearden fellows at the Saint Louis Art Museum, stopped by to talk with Nancy about their fellowships and the work they are doing at the museum. ABOUT THE ROMARE BEARDEN GRADUATE MUSEUM FELLOWSHIP: The Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellowship is a critical component in the museum's long-established commitment to increase diversity among its professional staff. Past fellows have gone on to hold key positions at the Saint Louis Art Museum, as well as at other noteworthy museums and universities, including the Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and University of Texas at Austin. Named for African-American artist Romare Bearden, the paid fellowship is designed to prepare graduate students of color seeking careers as art historians and museum professionals. Fellows gain valuable hands-on experience working throughout the Art Museum on specific assignments tailored to their background and interests. Since the program's inception in 1992, Bearden Fellows have spent their year teaching, researching works in the collection, developing programming, writing gallery materials and assisting curators with the development of exhibitions. This year's expansion of the fellowship is funded in part by the Romare Bearden Fellowship Endowment, which was created with a $100,000 gift from the Frost family. About SHAKA MYRICK Shaka Myrick (2021-2023) earned a bachelor's degree in painting at the University of Missouri in Columbia and spent the next decade working and interning at the NYCH Art Gallery in Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. She earned a master's degree in art history from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where she concentrated on West African culture and presence in Brazil. Last year, Myrick curated Real Black, the first exhibition featuring all Black artists at the UMKC Gallery of Art. About DELYN STEPHENSON Delyn Stephenson (2021-2022) earned a bachelor's degree in art history and archaeology at the University of Missouri in Columbia and a master's degree in history through the Museums, Public History, and Heritage program at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Skylar Rogers was born and raised in some of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods. She learned at an early age that music brought people together and grew up listening to music her mother (a singer herself) was listening or singing to. This upbringing laid the groundwork, giving Skylar the drive and passion to explore a career in music. Skylar's "Soul Rockin' Blues" sound has been influenced by Tina Turner, Etta James, Billy Joel, and Koko Taylor. Throw in a bit of AC/DC and multiple Motown artists and you have the unique, strong, passionate and energetic Skylar Rogers. Music and faith were primary sources of strength and inspiration for Skylar through not only the bad times (abusive relationships, the stillbirth of her child, and a brief period of homelessness following a divorce), but also the best of times (meeting, dating and marrying her second husband, and sharing precious time with her family and friends.) "I have learned that during these times, there was a song for every emotion. Music survives the worst, and celebrates the best."Skylar successfully launched her debut EP, "Insecurities” and began touring nationally in 2019, including performances at St Louis' National Blues Museum and Beale Street in Memphis. She was personally invited by Kevin Burt to perform in the All Star Blues Jam at Las Vegas' Big Blues Bender in 2019. At the same venue, blues artist Erica Brown  (Cast Iron Queens) was floored by Skylar's rendition of Koko Taylor's 'I'm A Woman,' telling her, "You're one of the few people I've heard to do that song justice!" She has also shared a stage with Ms. Zeno "The Mojo Queen," Tab Benoit, Terrie Odabi, and Ben Rice. Quoting Annika Chambers, 2019 Blues Music Award winner, Vizztone recording artist, "Skylar Rogers has a lot of energy and pizzazz, and brings a raw honesty to every performance. The blues world betta look out!"Skylar's first single, “Like Father Like Daughter” was released internationally by Blind Racoon in September 2020, attaining worldwide airplay, charting on the Roots Music Top 50 Contemporary Blues Songs, and continually charting on the Illinois Roots Music Report. Her full length CD, “Firebreather,” released internationally to high acclaim in January, 2021 reaching #2 on the Roots Music Report for Contemporary Blues Album and seeing airplay of all songs throughout the US, Europe and online.

Terry won a Grammy for "Bus Driver," 1 of 3 songs he co-wrote w/ Blues legend Muddy Waters. Terry may be the only person to have his work presented by Blues Hall of Fame Memphis, The National Blues Museum in St Louis, the Delta Blues Museum - Clarksdale, Mississippi in Clarksdale, MS, The DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, The Smithsonian, and Johnnie Cochran's funeral in Los Angeles. Together with his eyewitness tales the photos are a never before seen window into his lifetime in the Blues. For nearly 30 years, Terry's negatives and photos sat in a box in his closet; never intended for anything more than personal memories of some magical times by a fan and a friend who happened to have a camera in the right place at the right time. My guest today is Paul Niehaus IV, a musician, engineer, and producer born and raised in St Louis MO. Paul is the operator of Blue Lotus Studio, an audiophile-oriented recording studio in his basement in Saint Louis. He loves natural and hi-fidelity tones in the studio, and strives to cultivate an environment in which artists can get creative and be themselves. Paul has served on the Board of Directors for the Saint Louis Blues Society since 2014, and has produced three celebrated compilation albums for the group. He has also co-produced two permanent blues-oriented museum exhibits, one for the National Blues Museum (in STL) and one for the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (Meridian, MS). In 2016 Paul founded the Blue Lotus record label, specializing in Soul, Blues, Folk, and Americana. it was his production of super groovy soul records with artists like Gene Jackson, and Ms Zeno The Mojo Queen that really caught my attention. Plus I am a big fan of anything cool happening in my home away from home St Louis MO. JOHN NEMETH was born in Idaho to Hungarian immigrants, and honed his harmonica chops while working as a truck driver, jamming along to Junior Wells in his cab. It all culminated in a move to Memphis last year. Being in the epicenter for soul and blue shaped his new album Memphis Grease. Its slathered with fatback soul and blues done the Memphis way: tight horn lines, whirling organ with Johns soaring voice and wicked harp playing front and center. John won 2014 Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Male Artist of the year and has just been nominated for six 2015 Blues Music Awards. KRISTIN ANDREASSEN is an award-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist that has traveled the world with string-band sensation Uncle Earl and set hearts to flutter as one third of the folk-noir trio Sometymes Why. Along the way, she's performed and recorded alongside such maverick talents as John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Dirk Powell (Joan Baez, Cold Mountain), Sufjan Stevens, Aoife O'Donovan, Black Prairie and New York anti-folk icon Jeffrey Lewis. She won a Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song "Crayola Doesn't Make a Color for Your Eyes. Andreassens new release, Gondolier, represents a new direction and focus, including the first time shell be touring behind a solo release. It draws upon those varied musical experiences in service of her captivating gifts as a songwriter and vocalist. WoodSongs Kid: Carson Diersing is 17 year-old harmonica wiz from Fountain Town, Indiana. At 13, he became the youngest harmonica player in history to be endorsed by Hohner Harmonicas. He also won the 2012 Honeyboy Edwards Fund for the Blues at The National Blues Museum.

The two acts that made it through to the finals were Swamp Shaka and Tony C (who won the competition 2 years ago) and a new entry in the Challenge the Dirty 2:30. Both acts make it to the Finals at the Pine Loft in Berlin Ct. on Sunday Oct 20th. The Blues Blast interview this week is with Laura Chavez who is Candye Kane’s lead guitar player. A lot of the interview talks about her time as a contestant at the IBC in Memphis and how important it is to compete in the Challenge because of all of the added exposure you get. As always it’s a great read. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast9_26%AD_13.htm American Blues Scene has an interview with Robert Santelli who is the Executive Director of The Grammy Museum and a lifelong scholar in the blues. Among his many accomplishments are a number of definitive books on the genre, as well as pivotal roles in some of the most celebrated music museums in the world, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Experience Music Project in Seattle. In anticipation of Robert’s upcoming speech in Saint Louis for the National Blues Museum, they sat down to discuss his museum work, the influence (and lack of influence) the blues has had on popular music, his writing, and the special things that make music museums truly great. It’s also a great read you can find the link to it in this week’s write up. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/09/robert-santelli/ Also in American Blues Scene this week is an article about the CAll and Response Symposium at the King Biscuit Festival in Helena Ark on the 12th of October. Participating in the symposium are Bobby Rush, Carl Weathersby, Blind Mississippi Morris along with Blues writers and producers discussing the state of Blues music today and how difficult it is to stay relevant. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/09/king-biscuit-blues-festival-presents-3rd-annual-call-and-response-blues-symposium-in-historic-helena-arkansas/ Blues In The Area: 10/3 THURSDAY Chris Ruest & Preston Hubbard w/Mike Law - Cady's Tavern - Chepachet, RI 10/4 FRIDAY Bad Rooster - Friend's Cafe (9pm) - Southington, CT Easy Baby - The Berlin Fair (4-9pm) - Berlin, CT The Walter Lewis Blues Trio - The Lumberyard Pub - Georgetown, CT 10/5 SATURDAY Shemekia Copeland - The Narrows Center for the Arts (8pm) - Fall River, MA Ana Popovic - Black-eyed Sally's (9pm) - Hartford Gina Sicilia - Cafe Nine (8pm) - New Haven, CT Chris Ruest & Preston Hubbard w/Mike Law - Sporty's - Bristol, CT The Dave Keller Band - Theodores' - Springfield, MA Dan Stevens - The Berlin Fair (1:30-3pm) - Berlin, CT The Joe Bluz Blues Review - The Berlin Fair (5-9pm) - Berlin, CT The Cobalt Rhythm Kings - 1st & Summerfield United Methodist Church (8:30pm) - New Haven, CT Benefit for the United Methodist Black College Fund 425 College Street Dan Stevens - Perks & Corks (9pm) - Westerly, RI 10/6 SUNDAY The CT Blues Society's Solo/Duo Challenge - The Pine Loft (5pm) - Berlin, CT week 3 of 3, two contestants advance to finals 10/20 with: Mark Elkins Kris Heaton The Resonators Jackie & Rick Joel Blumert Mark Crofutt John Mayall - Fairfield Theatre's Stage One (7:45pm) - Fairfield, CT The Tom Sanders Band - The Berlin Fair (1:30-5:30pm) - Berlin, CT Dan Stevens - Bill's Seafood (3:30pm) - Westbrook, CT Blues Jam w/Chris Ruest & Preston Hubbard - Cady's Tavern (3-7pm) - Chepachet, RI Blues Jam w/Wildcat O'Halloran - City Sports Grille (4-8pm) - Northampton, MA Black-Eyed Sally’s Weekly Rundown: Wednesday Oct 2 Blues Open Mic hosted by Mike Law Friday Oct 4 Truck Stop Troubadors Saturday Oct 5 Ana Popovic Monday Oct 7 Monday Night Jazz Tuesday Oct 8 Mike Palin’s Other Orchestra I hope to see you out and about this week but if not please continue to support live music wherever you are. subscribe-with-itunes-button
