If you are listening to this, there is a good chance you already know that strength is an important part of taking care of your body. So, when we see an App or YouTube-based workout plan that offers strength training, it can be easy to believe that this is the kind of content you should be following. But are you really getting a strength stimulus from your workout? Or is that just what is being marketed to you? Key Takeaways If You Want To Get Serious About Your Programming, You Should: Meet yourself where you are at without any shame or judgment Work to understand the nuance of strength training programming and what it really means Reach out to a coach who understands your goals and how you can reach them safely. Going Behind the Scenes with Nikki Naab-Levy Nikki Naab-Levy is a strength and nutrition coach who has been involved in multiple arenas in the fitness industry for the last 17 years. She helps women move, build strength, improve mobility, move beyond injury, and find a sustainable approach to nutrition. She is passionate about having the unscripted and messy conversations necessary to help women get stronger and call attention to the problematic marketing in the world of fitness and beyond. Understanding the Nuance When using your favorite fitness apps, how do you know that the workouts you are doing are actually focusing on strength? Or if they are the right movements to be doing for your lived experience and goals? The truth is, you don't. That's why you need to understand the nuance behind the programming so that you can go out into the world and be able to look at your apps from an informed place of strength development. Picking apart the way things are marketed can help you differentiate between what you are actually getting and can help you pick a program that is effective for your specific goals. It's Not You, It's Your Workout Choosing workouts that are not right for you can make you feel chronically injured, sore, tired, or fed up with not seeing any improvements. This doesn't mean you aren't doing it right; it means the training you are doing isn't right for you. The difference between randomly working out and training means that you can acknowledge your weak factors, understand your lived experience, and engage with a program that gives you the runway for the best possible entry point to your goals. While it is not impossible to achieve these things with an app, it is increasingly risky and tricky to see long-term changes without a program built for you. How do you interact with fitness apps on a regular basis? Share your thoughts and experiences with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Understanding the difference between strength training programs and other types of workouts like circuit training (11:54) Analyzing the selection of programming available on many apps (31:22) How to create a long-term plan that goes beyond the short-term offers out there (43:45) The importance of repetition and practice when it comes to a successful training program (49:54) Why you can't put the cart before the horse when it comes to jumping into a program (1:04:12) Quotes “We are not hating on the workouts. But we want you to be able to make an informed decision so that if those are your goals, you are able to pick an approach that actually is going to work for you and help you get the results you want without feeling frustrated or feeling like your joints always hurt.” (8:00) “We know that if you don't feel awful all the time, and you are able to do high-quality work with appropriate weight and appropriate rest, you will be able to see the results that you want and not be super ridiculously sore.” (41:56) “How we put things together makes a huge difference. In the short term, but particularly in the long term.” (42:50) “Programming can be done in a very broad way, or can be made very specific to the individual, and their needs and their interests. But at the same time, there has to be some sort of logic and base.” (54:17) “Give yourself the tools to be successful! If something is not working for you, you are not a terrible person; you probably just need a different approach or a scaled-down approach, or something needs to be adjusted.” (1:08:44) Featured on the Show Apply for Strength Nutrition Unlocked Here Nikki Naab-Levy Website Follow Nikki on Instagram Total Package Strength Full show notes Follow Steph on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest I'd really love it if you would take 1 min and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! Today host Rachel speaks with returning guest Jenni Tarma about hypermobility disorders, which appear more often in yoga students than in the general population. In this episode, Jenni describes the wide range of symptoms linked to hypermobility, some of the challenges yoga teachers face when working with students on this spectrum, as well as how yoga can help. Since hypermobility disorders can bring up both physical and mental symptoms, we talk about the importance of incorporating nervous system down-regulation practices, as well as those incorporating tactile external feedback. Women are starting to fuel better, lift heavier, recover smarter; they have fewer aches and pains, but yet we still collectively place huge importance on the number we see on the bathroom scale. This can be problematic for women athletes, as that number is not an accurate representation of the gains you are working towards. Key Takeaways If You Want to Change Your Relationship with the Bathroom Scale, You Should: Understand that there are many nuances and complexities when dealing with your relationship with the scale Work towards stopping weighing yourself in whatever unique way feels good to you Remember that the scale is not an accurate representation of the strength gains you are making The Power of the Scale The bathroom scale has a collective power over many of us when it comes to being an athletic woman who wants to train and be strong. We can make an entire list of things that have been improving since we started training, but if the scale isn't going down, we have been conditioned to think it is not successful. But the truth is, there are so many gains we get from taking care of ourselves that have nothing to do with counting calories, eating less and moving more, or weighing ourselves every day. The scale can get in the way of your ability to feel at ease with things and fully embrace your identity as an athletic woman. Focusing on What Matters Weighing yourself less, removing the scale from your environment, and keeping things in perspective when it comes to gaining muscle mass and bone strength are all ways that you can work on your health rather than the number on the scale. This is not just an aesthetics game anymore; we need to move past being ‘toned' or ‘skinny' and focus on what really matters. When you are fueling yourself better, lifting heavier, and recovering smarter, you begin to have more energy, see more muscle definition and size, see improvements in your recovery and your energy, and so much more. These habits might not lower our body weight to what society idealizes, but they will help you stay strong and healthy for as long as possible. How does the bathroom scale factor into your relationship with your body, your weight, and your training? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why making strength gains has so many benefits that have nothing to do with the scale (8:29) How to know if you are fueling enough for your training (13:59) The impact of pressure from diet culture when it comes to maintaining unrealistic weight standards (20:45) Understanding how body dysmorphia plays into our relationship with our weight (25:35) What you can focus on instead of the bathroom scale (28:26) Quotes “I want to help you move past the bathroom scale as having so much power over you as a woman athlete.” (2:21) “Especially as athletic women, who constantly have the message drilled into us that we need to just eat less and move more, eat less and move more, we deserve a little bit more of a sophisticated conversation than that.” (13:33) “There can be a lot of reasons why we still continue to put so much emphasis and importance on the scale, even when everything else is better!” (26:06) “As an athletic woman, relying on weighing yourself less as a metric of your strength, as a metric of your improvements in the way that you are taking care of yourself and the things that you are prioritizing, is a smart way to move eventually.” (30:01) “There are lots of different things that you can think about, instead of just keeping track of your body weight on the scale.” (39:36) Featured on the Show Apply for the Group Strength Nutrition Unlocked Program Here Find the full show notes here Follow Steph on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest I'd really love it if you would take 1 min and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! When you see tiny pink dumbbells, what is your first thought? While these tiny pink dumbbells can have their utility in the world of post-rehab or muscular endurance, the marketing messages surrounding these hand weights are incredibly problematic. In today's episode, my good friend Nikki Naab-Levy and I are breaking down the problem with the overall message surrounding tiny pink dumbbells in fitness marketing. Key Takeaways If You Are Sick of Seeing Tiny Pink Dumbbells, You Should: Remember that just because you are a woman it does not mean you are not capable or are too fragile to be strong Stop worrying about getting bulky or comparing yourself to people on Instagram Find your weight sweet spot and focus on using an adequate amount of weight that is right for you Calling Out Problematic Marketing with Nikki Naab-Levy Nikki Naab-Levy is a strength and nutrition coach who has been involved in multiple arenas in the fitness industry for the last 17 years. She helps women move, build strength, improve mobility, move beyond injury, and find a sustainable approach to nutrition. She is passionate about having the unscripted and messy conversations necessary to help women get stronger and call attention to the problematic marketing in the world of fitness and beyond. Pink Is Not the Problem There is nothing wrong with expressing your femininity and working out in a way that suits you. However, you need to ask yourself if your tool fits the application. We all have the autonomy to decide how we want to lift weights or exercise; the problem comes when we allow marketers to lie to women about how they can achieve their goals using insufficient methods. Strength training, real strength training, is all about using smart programming and an appropriate amount of weight to get stronger over time, not ‘to get toned and flexible' by using weights designed to keep women in a small mindset. The Weaponization of Femininity The marketing of tiny pink dumbbells says that women shouldn't get too bulky and that they need to lift petite things because they are fragile. This is simply not true, and this brainwashing keeps women from experiencing their full abilities and capacities for getting stronger. The weaponization of femininity has a range of negative implications that we are honestly just sick of. If your goal is to get progressively stronger over time, you need to take a step back and analyze the messages that are being directed toward you as a woman who lifts. How do you believe the marketing of fitness impacts your decisions regarding your routine? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode What is really behind the marketing of tiny pink dumbbells (9:12) Why we need to stop lying to women about how they can achieve their fitness desires (15:14) How to address a lack of lifting results and find your weight sweet spot (20:41) The difference between something that makes you stronger and strength training (27:23) Unpack the implication behind the messaging of tiny pink dumbbells (39:25) Quotes “It is amazing that we live in a day and age where tiny pink dumbbells need an entire podcast conversation, but they do! Because they are so prevalent in marketing and the marketing in what they can and cannot do for you in no way matches the reality of what you would actually want to use them for.” (7:21) “Strength is a continuum. There is a lot of confusion about what you are trying to achieve and what is the best use of the thing that you are doing.” (21:05) “Scratch below the surface of why you are buying something or why you are following someone or why you are doing something, because there is underlying science and utility in each of the modalities, and if you are going to choose something, choose something that actually has an application.” (38:32) “When we make choices for ourselves, we need to step back and be logical and look beyond the marketing, I think that is my whole thing. The tiny pink dumbbell is fine, it can have its utility, just stop calling it strength training and stop saying it will make you toned because it freakin won't.” (39:15) “I still have capabilities that go far beyond what I thought I could do when I was in the box of the tiny pink dumbbell when I was in the world of the tiny pink dumbbell.” (44:36) Featured on the Show Join Strength Nutrition Unlocked Nikki Naab-Levy Website Results Not Typical Podcast Strength for Hypermobility Free Resources Follow Nikki on Instagram Check out the full show notes here! I am thrilled to have my colleagues and friends Nikki Naab Levy and Isabelle Barter on today to dive into all of the messy, nuanced parts of weight loss, self care and dieting. The big topic we're talking about is the statistic that 95% of diets fail. What does that actually mean? What is failure? Why is this happening? And what can we do about it? As always, the three of us are candid and personal and have no problem saying the things other people often hesitate to. Here's what we get into:The lack of education around the risks of weight loss and how weight loss actually happens Why self trust is at the core of of this work and what that actually looks likeWhy learning internal cues is more important than following external rulesHow to bridge the gap between wanting to lose weight and also learning to eat with intention, awareness and self careYour personal history with food and dieting plays a huge role in when and if weight loss is a good choice for youWhy coaching is one of the best tools for navigating this processHow to shift away from the urgency around dietingThe tradeoffs that exist between losing weight and your well beingHow and why figuring out what foods work for you is the foundation of all of this workThe way you actually make changes around how you feel around food (hint, its not a diet)Connect with NikkiWebsiteInstagramPodcastConnect with IsabelleWebsiteInstagramConnect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, exercise and mindset tipsLearn more about 1:1 coaching on my website

We share a lot of laughs in this one.Her approach to movement and strength training aligns so well with how I approach eating, body image and behavior around food. I love this episode because it reveals so much of the overlap between movement and eating and how movement can be the key to accessing a more connected relationship with your body that will lead you to changing your relationship with food and finding sustainable weight loss. This conversation candidly explores:The process by which change in your body actually happens (hint: consistently focusing on one small shift at a time)Why the process is more important than the outcomeWhy externally driven goals (like the number on the scale or the barbell) are not the source of your happiness. Why its actually a good thing that there is no end point where you have “achieved” your goalsOur own very personal struggles with change around exercise and eatingConnect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, exercise and mindset tipsCheck out my websiteConnect with IsabelleInstagramWebsite
When you have a history of pain, injury, or hypermobility, it can be scary to introduce strength training into your routine. But strength training can help you improve your mobility, build strength, and move beyond a past injury. If you have fears about starting a strength training practice because of pain or hypermobility, this episode is here to tell you that you have nothing to fear. Key Takeaways If You Want To Use Strength Training to Improve Your Pain or Hypermobility, You Should: Start changing your mindset to believe your body is capable of doing more than you give it credit for Find a basic strength training program with low-to-medium reps to feel more in control Introduce strength training in a way that makes sense for your unique body and needs The Benefits of Strength Training Nikki Naab-Levy is a strength and nutrition coach who knows firsthand what it is like to live with chronic pain. Having been involved in multiple arenas in the fitness industry for the past 17 years, Nikki and her clients have used strength training to alleviate their pain and gain confidence, strength, and a sustainable mindset. How Strength Training Can Help Your Symptoms Even if you have a history of pain, injury, or hypermobility, it is completely possible and beneficial to use strength training as a way to create a sense of safety in your body through your nervous system. If you think an activity will hurt, the likelihood of it hurting is far more significant; it is just how our brains are wired. But, when you equip yourself with the knowledge that Nikki shares to know how pain works and why it happens, you can design your strength training workouts in a way that benefits your body and mind. Getting Rid of the Fear Around Strength Training There is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to strength training, especially for women. We are told not to lift anything heavy because we might hurt ourselves and are instead conditioned to believe that workouts ‘made for women' are the only way to find the results we are looking for. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Strength training, when done properly for your unique body's needs, can not only help you manage your pain, injury, or hypermobility, but it can lead to a whole new way of understanding just how much your body can really do. Are you ready to harness the power of strength training so that you can relieve your pain, past injuries, or hypermobility? Share how this episode changes your perspective with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode The biggest benefits of strength training if you have a history of pain or injury (10:31) Clues that you are potentially hypermobile and how to gain clarity around your assessment (14:37) How to get started on your unique strength training journey if you have a history of injury (19:55) Dismissing the myths that women should not lift heavy things because they will get hurt (27:20) How to get clear on the goal of your exercise and see the results you want (32:44) Quotes “We tend to have a really narrow view of how to address things. And that narrow view tends to be what keeps us stuck in not feeling or getting better or being able to start or pursue something.” (8:51) “I think the first thing we need to start to understand and educate ourselves to reduce some of the fear is this understanding that pain is sort of an experience that is created by the nervous system as a way to get us to pay attention to something.” (12:32) “You do need a certain underlying level of being able to sense and feel your joints and control your ranges of motion or your stability.” (20:35) “What people need to realize is, it is actually that basic, and whatever weight you start with does not matter. It just needs to be heavy enough that it feels challenging, but not so heavy that you feel out of control with the weight. And typically, as women, we are much more capable and stronger than we realize we are.” (22:34) “You are not going to get that from starving the shit out of yourself and doing these workouts that make you tired. But they don't make you stronger, they don't give you more muscle, and they don't make you better.” (33:34) Featured on the Show Join the Group Strength Nutrition Waitlist Here Nikki Naab-Levy Website Follow Nikki on Instagram Check out the full show notes here! Nikki and I get real in this episode as we discuss how our mental health plays a crucial role in how we stay motivated ourselves and help others in the same way. A big part of our discussion is about changing our mind if something isn't working and there is no "one size fits all". This is all about true empowerment when it comes to individual well-being and being okay with doing what we feel is instinctively right for ourselves and nobody else. You'll get some great tips and tricks to jumpstart your personal fitness or that business idea you were thinking about with no filter, remaining open and honest about our experiences. Oftentimes, new moms hear about all the things they can’t do once they find out they’re pregnant or with a new baby at home. In this episode, Nikki Naab-Levy talks with prenatal and postpartum fitness expert Rebecca Crouse-Roman about the things you should work on when you’re pregnant. 3 things to focus on during and after your pregnancy 1) Shoulder stability and strength After you’ve had your baby, your going to use your arms. A lot. You’ll be holding him or her while breast feeding, pushing strollers, lifting bulky bags and transferring car seats. Talking the time to create strong stable shoulders during pregnancy will decrease your risk of shoulder injury and pain and help prepare you for the new loads your arms will experience after you’ve had your baby. Some examples of good arm exercises include targeting the rotator cuff and doing bicep curls and rows with an emphasis on good shoulder alignment, over load. 2) Walking Walking is one of the best exercises you can do when you’re pregnant, because it’s low impact and incredibly functional. Also, after you’ve had your baby, you’re going to spend a lot of time chasing your kiddo and he or she starts crawling and walking. 3) Squatting Squatting is one of the most functional ways to build lower body strength and as your pregnancy progresses it is going to be more challenging to move around. Additionally, after you’ve had your baby, you will oftentimes have to get out of chairs while holding your child, so it’s ideal to have the leg strength to be able to do this unassisted.
