Question – how much do Diallo and LUXXURY love Depeche Mode? Answer – so much that they couldn't pack it all into one episode. So get ready for a thorough two-part deep dive on these pioneers who defined the sound of electronic music! In Part One, the guys discuss Depeche Mode's early years and their dynamic approach to using synthesizers and drum machines to make their music. Plus, they break down how “People Are People” was made – the song that took them from the underground scene to breaking into the U.S. market.
Mit "Some Great Reward" haben Depeche Mode es 1984 zum ersten Mal in die Top drei der deutschen Albumcharts geschafft. Auch ihr erster Nummer-1-Hit "People Are People" ist darauf. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Some Great Reward" wird im Podcast gesprochen (15:39) – "Lie To Me"(21:10) – "People Are People"(43:45) – "Somebody"(52:43) – "Blasphemous Rumors"(01:02:14) – "Master And Servant" __________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Some Great Reward" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/swr1-meilensteine-depeche-mode-some-great-reward-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? With their seventh release, 1990s 'Violator', Depeche Mode completed their transformation from quirky synth-pop pioneers to international rock stars. A more stripped-down, sinister sound aided by producer Flood perfectly showcases these dark songs about guilt, salvation and obsession. It's a sound that this week's guest, poet and music lover Sarah Nichols, has kept close to her heart for over 30 years. Songs featured in this episode: Enjoy The Silence - Tori Amos; Run - New Order; Pictures Of You - The Cure; Behind The Wheel (Live 1988, Pasadena CA) - Depeche Mode; Temptation - New Order; People Are People, Stripped, A Question Of Time, World In My Eyes, Sweetest Perfection - Depeche Mode; Personal Jesus - Marilyn Manson; Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash; Personal Jesus, Halo, Waiting For The Night, Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth - Depeche Mode; Fascination Street - The Cure; Blue Dress - Depeche Mode; One Of These Days - Pink Floyd; Clean, Ghosts Again - Depeche Mode
Few bands have stayed artistically and commercially relevant over forty years into their career, but with the release of their new album Memento Mori in March 2023, Depeche Mode continue to defy the odds. In the 80s the band built a fanbase in Europe over their first few releases before entering the global stage with "People Are People" in 1984. By the end of the decade, they were regularly a top ten album charting band in the UK while making serious inroads in North America. They entered the 90s with an album primed by the infectious single "Personal Jesus" that would launch them into the stratosphere. With Violator and its many singles, like R.E.M. and other alternative acts, mainstream radio and MTV formerly dominated by pop and hair metal were beginning to shift direction before the dam burst in 1991. But lurking beneath the surface was inter-band tensions and various addictions that would threaten to derail the band at the height of their global success. Songs in this Episode: Intro - Personal Jesus (from Violator) 19:59 - World in My Eyes (from Violator) 35:11 - Death's Door (Until The End Of The World soundtrack) 43:31 - One Caress (from Songs of Faith and Devotion) 1:03:11 - Home (from Ultra) Outro - Only When I Lose Myself (from The Singles 86>98) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Our guest, Police Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian of the Winthrop Massachusetts Police Department, is fighting for change. Change in policy, change in the way drugs are classified, and a change in the way officers can reach out for help. He dreams of a day when first responders have access to the mental health care they need and the War on Drugs is over. Sarko is not only a peace officer in Massachusetts, he is also a psychotherapist, Karate Professor, and advocate for psychedelic medicines – having experienced firsthand the healing potential they have. We discuss the challenges first responders face, the domestic violence problem, and the changes that are being made to make our nation a better place.“This is one of the most amazing countries on earth, in my opinion. And it deserves reverence and care. And we need to keep working to make it better”Sarko Gergerian is a master's level clinical mental health counselor with a background in philosophy, religion, and psychology, and is currently doing doctorate-level work at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Depth, Jungian and Archetypal Psychology. He is trained in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and holds the 100-hour certificate from the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He is the first working peace officer in the country to complete an experiential training component sanctioned by the Federal Government which allowed entry into an expanded state of consciousness by MDMA during psychotherapy and the first to earn the Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) credential from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.Sarko currently works as a police peace officer at the rank of Lieutenant and a psychotherapist. In these roles, he founded one of the first Guardianship police models in the country known as C.L.E.A.R. He is a certified police peer professional who works to not only find and help civilians stay out of cages and caskets, but also connect with first responders so they do not succumb to job-related stress injury. In his lifetime, he has worked as a certified personal trainer, natural bodybuilding competitor/coach, and mental health first aid instructor. He is a published thinker, national trainer, and international speaker. He is an activist working to bring the War on Drugs to an end.Sarko believes that a strong therapeutic alliance is foundational to psychotherapy. He uses empathy, active listening, and proper questions to engage in meaningful therapeutic dialogue, which is always trauma-informed, strengths-based, and person-centered. He believes that resilience and capacity expansion in all of the domains of wellness should be central to self-care. In addition to policing and psychotherapy, he holds professor-level rank in American Kenpo Karate (AKK) and is a certified Heart Math meditation instructor and trainer.Show notes:* The first working police officer in the United States to earn the certified addiction recovery coach credential – Police Lieutenant Sarko Gergerian* The different types of education police offers should have* The Federal Bureau of Narcotics made everything worse- how has policing adapted?* Could safe supply be the answer to our drug problems?* The war on drugs is a terrible war* Moral injury and the domestic violence problem* These people are people in need of support* How did a police officer come to realize the potential benefits of psychedelics?* The wheels of change go very, very slowly* The positive impact of Martial Arts* The importance of firearms training for police officersLinks and references:* Psychedelic Wisdom* Psychedelic Medicine* Good Cop, Bad War* Entheo Bliss* EcstaticThank you for reading Mind Body Health & Politics. When we dislike or judge a behavior, it brings up feelings of irritation and embarrassment in us. And when we feel irritated, how do we react? By snapping at others, sighing, rolling our eyes, or at the very least pulling away from the interaction. In turn, the other person (whether child, teen, or adult) feels hurt and confused! How do we remedy this behavior within ourselves? Let's discuss it in this episode. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Remnant's wonky streak continues as David Bernstein, professor at Antonin Scalia Law School, joins the program to discuss his new book, Classified: The Untold Story of Racial Classification in America. Racial classifications are ubiquitous in American life, but David believes they are becoming increasingly arbitrary and incoherent. His solution is to abolish official racial classification altogether and replace it with a separation of race and state. But what would this look like in practice, and how did terms of racial classification originate in the first place? In 1981, a yoghurt-factory worker, a window dresser, and two blokes employed by an insurance company and a bank, somehow conjured up one of the most irresistible songs of the decade. Forty years and a hundred million records later – including 35 Top 20 hits in the UK – Depeche Mode are solid-gold, electronic-rock royalty. In this episode, we join the band for the first part of their expedition – from the sparkling pop of ‘Just Can't Get Enough' to the industrial clank of ‘People Are People', losing members, attracting the scorn of the media, and wearing a skirt or two along the way. So, let's speak, and spell it out for our listeners about Depeche Mode. Sometimes we put tremendous pressure on ourselves to show up at 100% capacity, to be everything to everyone, or to always be working on something. Things don't need to be fixed all the time though, and it is okay to just show up the best we can. There is a lot of wisdom to just being and letting time do its thing. Even planets slow down, so plan it in your schedule to do the same. It is the first step towards surrender and investment in a relationship with Divinity. From that space, we can rest, fill up our cup, and be blatantly honest with ourselves by tuning into our true desires.
