We're joined by Michigan residents Brandon Ostrowski and Todd Sellon to discuss Michigan's new “One-Buck Rule,” the controversy surrounding it, and what it could mean for hunters across the state. We also dive into the recent changes to Michigan's rifle line law, how those updates may impact safety, hunter opportunity, and deer management moving forward. This week on The Fall Podcast, I sit down with my good buddy Lee Herr out of Iowa, a guy who's built a reputation for doing one of the hardest things in the whitetail world, picking one specific buck and dedicating entire seasons to chasing that deer until the job gets done. No bouncing between shooters. No settling. Just patience, discipline, and an obsession with figuring out one mature whitetail. What makes this story even crazier is that Lee started hunting this buck with almost zero information. The only proof this deer even existed was a single shed antler he found the year before. No trail camera history. No daylight photos. No years of scouting intel. Just one giant shed and the belief that a world class buck was living somewhere nearby. This season, all of that work paid off in a massive way when Lee wrapped his tag around an absolutely stud 254-inch non-typical giant that ranks number 6 in the state of Iowa all time with his bow on a small piece of property. But what makes this story even better is the man behind it. Lee is as humble and down to earth as they come, and this conversation dives way deeper than just antler score. We break down the years of history with this buck, the mental grind of passing other deer, hunting pressured ground, the strategy behind targeting one animal, and what it really takes to consistently hunt at a high level. If you're passionate about mature whitetails and the chess match that comes with hunting them, this is an episode you won't want to miss. . . . Tom Murphy and I have had a lot of conversations about deer hunting, but this one felt different. We got into the kind of detail that most hunters never talk about out loud, specifically what it actually takes to hunt a mature buck over multiple seasons without losing your mind or your confidence. Tom's account of finally closing the deal on a deer he'd been after for years is worth the listen on its own. The shot, the tracking, the emotional weight of the whole thing. He doesn't sugarcoat any of it. We also dig into scouting, historical sign, habitat quality, and why knowing where a deer isn't can be just as valuable as knowing where he is. Simple idea. Hard to actually put into practice. If you've ever locked onto a specific animal and let the whole thing consume a few years of your life, this episode will feel familiar. If you haven't, consider this a fair warning. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 491 Scouting and historical sign tell you more about a buck's potential than any single trail cam photo ever will. Don't chase scrapes. They're exciting, but they'll burn you. Focus on the habitat instead. Knowing where a deer isn't is just as valuable as knowing where he is. Eliminating country keeps you from burning good setups at the wrong time. Mature bucks will humble you. Missed opportunities and close calls aren't failures, they're information. The shot is just one moment in a very long process. The anticipation, the tracking, the recovery, the emotional weight of it all. None of it is clean or simple. When you've chased a specific animal for years, every decision carries real weight. This episode gets into that honestly. In this episode, we break down the real situation behind Michigan's deer policies. The buck to doe ratio problem. The drop in harvest numbers. The science being used to justify new rules. And the growing frustration from hunters who feel like things just aren't adding up. Should Michigan move to a one buck rule for deer hunting? We break down one of the biggest debates in Michigan deer management right now. The conversation covers the Lower Peninsula specifically and digs into the real issues hunters keep bringing up, including buck to doe ratio concerns, antler point restrictions, the bait ban, harvest numbers, hunter satisfaction, disease concerns, and whether Michigan is actually creating better deer management or just adding more restrictions. We talk through the major sides of the argument. Some hunters believe a one buck rule would help create more selective harvest and improve the age structure of bucks. Others believe an earn a buck system would make more sense by requiring doe harvest before buck harvest, which could more directly address the imbalance between bucks and does. We also get into the argument over APRs, how they work in Michigan now, and whether they truly help improve buck quality or simply protect deer with poor antler traits that should not stay in the breeding pool. We also dives into the controversy around the Lower Peninsula bait ban and the belief that reduced harvest numbers may actually be making Michigan's deer issues worse instead of better. Kyle explains why he believes any serious deer management plan has to stay consistent with the science being used to justify it. If the concern is disease spread and overpopulation, then the state has to look honestly at whether current rules are helping hunters remove enough deer from the landscape. Along the way, we talk about hunting ethics, managing wounded or genetically poor deer in the field, how different Michigan regions should be treated differently, why hunter input matters, and why accurate deer reporting is critical if the DNR and hunters are ever going to get on the same page. This is a real conversation about conservation, deer management, hunting culture, regulations, and what the future of Michigan deer season should actually look like. If you care about Michigan deer hunting, whitetail management, the DNR, APRs, the bait ban, doe harvest, trophy buck potential, wildlife policy, or the future of hunting in the Midwest, this is a conversation worth hearing. And just when everything seemed to be lining up, one giant mistake nearly cost John the hunt of a lifetime. The Bowhunter Chronicles Podcast - Episode 385: One-Buck Rule Debate & Michigan Deer Herd Health - Josh Arbogast - The Michigan Whitetail Project In this episode of The Bowhunter Chronicles Podcast, Adam Miller, Nate Rozeveld, and Josh Arbogast dive into the current and future state of Michigan deer hunting regulations, with a strong focus on upcoming Natural Resource Commission (NRC) meetings and how hunter involvement can shape deer management decisions. The conversation centers on potential regulatory changes including the one-buck rule, doe harvest strategies, and antler point restrictions (APR). Josh explains why the April and May NRC meetings are critical moments for Michigan hunters, stressing that meaningful improvements to deer herd health won't happen without a unified and informed hunting community. The hosts explore the cultural divide within Michigan's hunting landscape, contrasting regional experiences and questioning what “opportunity” really means when it comes to sustainable deer management. They discuss the importance of maintaining proper buck-to-doe ratios, effective doe harvest, and data-driven decisions to improve long-term hunting quality—not just short-term success. Throughout the episode, Adam, Nate, and Josh share personal hunting stories, lessons learned in the field, and insights on scouting, access strategies, and the mental side of hunting. Please Nominate Us Podcast Awards If you wanted to test out a new kind of face paint that doesn't crack under pressure, meaning is doesn't run or disappear when faced with a severe perspiration situation, where would you go to test it? For Brian Hardy, Florida was the ideal testing ground because first, it is the perfect environment to sweat, but more importantly, he lives there. During an scorching mid-west hunt, Brian became fed up with traditional petroleum based, hard to clean up face paint, so he set out with his wife to create a healthy, easy clean up, no-run solution to these face paint problems. And, living in Florida, he conducted test trials right in his own back yard. Now, after years of trial and error, you will soon see Hardy Face Paint in some of the largest outdoor sporting good shops on the planet. While we had Brian's attention, we decided to grill Brian on how to hunt deer in Florida. We had no idea that you could have a rain out in deer hunting, but at least now, even if you tried to hunt in the Florida washouts, thanks to Brian, your face paint won't run anymore.
