We had the pleasure of interviewing onelinedrawing over Zoom video!Jonah Matranga has been making music for over 30 years.A prolific artist, he has become an enduring institution in the scene with a devoted fan base, rich lineage, and varied music career. Jonah has often straddled the line between the underground and mainstream. He's worked with indie labels like Jade Tree and majors such as Atlantic, having fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE.His music has influenced bands from Deftones to Blink-182, and he was there for emo and post-hardcore giants in their earliest beginnings — taking bands such as Thursday and Dashboard Confessional on tour. Simply put, the scene cannot be separated from Jonah's art.Jonah has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy to them all: raw honesty and an ability to make every show unique and personal. This is most apparent in Jonah's solo and collaborative project ONELINEDRAWING. Jonah's solo performance has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where they often perform with only a guitar and R2D2 sidekick.Sketchbook is the latest release from ONELINEDRAWING, featuring a collection of songs from Jonah's early solo years, 1999-2001, completely remastered for vinyl. The album features originals and renditions of the likes of 7 Seconds and Jawbox, as well as the Sense Field split honoring the late Jon Bunch(Sense Field/Further Seems Forever). The LP also includes liner notes and zine by Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason/New End Original).Sketchbook exists as both a time capsule and thank you letter to fans and music itself — a combination of the period in which Jonah first embarked on his solo journey and a celebration of the vitality that music and community not only affords him but all of us.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Jonah Matranga over Zoom video.Jonah Matranga is no stranger to the scene. He has been making music for over 30 years and has become somewhat of an institution. A prolific artist who is full of ideas and he straddles the line between the underground and the mainstream cusp, Matranga has fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE, and has worked with indie labels like Jade Tree to majors such as Atlantic. His music has been noted as influencing many notable bands ranging from Deftones to Blink-182.Simply put, there is no one quite like Jonah Matranga.Throughout his long career, he has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished like he has, after playing almost 4,000 shows. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy with him — a devoted fanbase, raw honesty, and an interest in making every show unique and personal. This has always been the most apparent in Matranga's solo and collaborative project performing as onelinedrawing. Jonah's performance as onelinedrawing has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where he often performed with only his guitar and his R2D2 sidekick. Tenderwild marks the return of onelinedrawing, which is the first time since 2004's The Volunteers (Jade Tree) that Jonah has used the moniker. This album brought together so many friends and fellow musicians that it only felt right to release it as onelinedrawing. Tenderwild is an uplifting journey that was written and inspired during a chaotic time of healing for Matranga. Contrasting between guitar driven rock songs and heartfelt intense ballads, Tenderwild is a collection of some of the best songs Jonah has ever written. The album features guest appearances from many of Matranga's close friends, such as: Zach Lind (Jimmy Eat World), Jeremy Tappero (Soul Asylum), Norman Brannon (Texas Is The Reason), Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional), John Gutenberger (Far), and Jake Snider (Minus The Bear). Episode 5 is all about some of the great titles we have available for pre-order! It is really a mix bag of hardcore, alternative, and punk that features releases from our friends at Cash Only Records and Iodine Recordings among others. Join Brad and listen to eight songs off of eight albums of albums on pre-order at NorthernScene.net. Songs played in order:1. Scowl - "Dead To Me"2. Onelinedrawing - "Tenderwild"3. The Chats - "6L GTR"4. Raw Brigade - "Latinos"5. Life's Question - "Mellow My Mind"6. Candy - "Human Condition Above Human Opinion"7. ASkySoBlack - "See You Sacred"8. The Darling Fire - "Machina"Two notes: Onelinedrawing has a pressing plant delay and is likely now a month behind. The album will be out entirely next week, but we wont see the vinyl for a few more weeks. Also, to clarify my jumbled words... If you pre-order Candy on florescent yellow, you will be entered to have your copy upgraded to the white/blue/white with red splatter. Once the pre-order comes down and all records are in hand, we will do a random draw to determine the winner of the giveaway. You do not have to accept the white/blue/white copy, you are just being given the opportunity to have it swapped out. All songs are rightfully property of their respected owners and Northern Scene claims no ownership whatsoever.

Jonah could be at the centerpiece of the Podioslave world and we're here for it. This is a can't miss conversation. When you set up an interview like this, it always leaves you a little nervous. You worry whether they'll be receptive to the discussion. Well, as you're soon about to find out, that's not the case with our guest. This week's guest, Jonah Matranga, is a crucial part of the emo & post-hardcore scene that shaped an entire generation of music. His band Far has an influence still being felt today. But, much like his music, there's far more to Jonah. The conversation is open, beautiful, candid, and at times, emotional. When we say heavy, we mean it in the absolute best way possible. What you'll find out (if you didn't already know) is that Jonah is a beautiful and gifted performer and music is his tool by which he does so. We're incredibly proud of this episode and we feel certain you'll love it. Jonah's latest album, PSONGS, is available now. I remember buying Far’s “Water & Solutions” in 1998 and being captivated by the voice I heard. This record helped me understand the different directions my musical tastes could go, and a voice that could take me so many different places. More than twenty years later, I still listen to it regularly. Throughout that time, I’ve remained a huge fan of all his work, we’ve worked on creative projects together, and I’ve been able to call Jonah a friend. We caught up recently to talk about the past two decades of his work. We dig into the origins of Far and the making of “Water & Solutions”, onelinedrawing and his solo career, the Gratitude record, the "Water & Solutions" 20th Anniversary Tour, and so much more. Thanks for listening.

Despite only ever achieving limited commercials success, Sacramento California’s Far have had a profound influence on a wide range of rock bands including Biffy Clyro, Incubus, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, Finch, Funeral For a Friend and Deftones. With the release of their forth full-length album Water & Solutions in 1998, Far created their ultimate musical statement, a concise blend of emotive hooks and hardcore sonics that before sadly splitting up barely a year later.Remfry say down with Far frontman Jonah Matranga to discuss the making of the album, how it came to have such a profound influence on what became the burgeoning emo movement of the mid 2000s and the reasons that Water & Solutions doesn’t suffer from the crass commercialisation of sincerity that plagued that scene. Whilst Far split up shortly after W&S was released, it was merely the beginning for Matranga, who went on to form a number of other projects including Onelinedrawing, New End Original, Gratitude, I is Another and Camorra. Alongside Nick Cave, Bruce Springsteen, PJ Harvey and David Bowie, Matranga was one of the 5 artists we highlighted back on Episode 00 in our ‘Venn Diagram of Riot Act’ episode. Usually I try (with varying levels of success) to use these show notes to provide some context for the episode, but the fact of the matter is that this one is just so rich, so loaded with meaning and intention and love and weirdness, that I’d really rather you listened to the episode and not have the surprise of it ruined. But that’s unfair. Of course it is. You want to know what value this episode provides to you, and to do that you need context.I’ve known of Jonah Matranga for many years, and we met once a long time ago. Everyone that I know who’s met him always says that same thing – he’s such a nice guy. That’s true, he definitely is. You get a good sense of that in the interview. He’s also a very passionate and engaging guy. At some point in the interview I ask him a question which I hadn’t seen many people ask him before, a kind self-evident one: what musicians led you down the creative path? Jonah explodes with passion about his favourite artists, the records he loved when growing up, the things that gave him that creative spark. It’s those moments that make this podcast worthwhile. Some highlights:Two week bursts of touring giving the illusion that he’s always on the roadBeing productiveFamilyFinding love in new places like DunlopHow Dunlop became a thing (it’s his fourth time in as many years in this tiny village outside Glasgow)How it is literally impossible to act like a rock star of any kind when you’re playing in a bowling clubHow this is DIY and punk rock at its very coreWhy treating people well is important and how learned how not to treat people through years of being a musicianThe things that break musiciansNot having that aspiration to super stardom despite the allure of moneyThe Beatles, Joe Jackson, The Who, Jackson Browne, Mission to Burma, O NegativeWorking with J.
