There are people who accompany you musically your whole life, maybe they are even of the same or a similar age. You might lose contact to that person's music once in a while but as you soon as you "re-connect", there is the same kind of close-ness, of connection, yes, of intimacy. For me, one of these voices is Jonah Matranga's, whose various projects have always resonated with me, mostly because of his voice which to me is the epitome of Emo, the good kind of Emo, not the shitty stuff that came in the late Aughts which bands who were more into mascara and stupid breakdowns than into making quality music - in his words and his songs there is always that ray of honesty. Now he has lent his skills for a new album with English Post-Stoner-Post-Hardcore veterans Sons of Alpha Centauri. Their first collaboration in 2021 was called "Push" and this new one is named "Pull" and believe me there are many pull-factors on these nine songs. Released again via Exile on Mainstream Records, this new record is a bit closer to Jonah's former combos and therefore the comparisons are obvious. But there is much more to talk about - his collaboration with the Deftones, Star Wars, his work with Far, hair, his connection to Sons of Alpha Centauri and much more. There is even a little quiz and a chance to win something for you all out there! So sit back and enjoy our latest interview! Whilst our fifth birthday is the 15th of December this (absolutely ridiculous) birthday episode turned into a two parter so we're dropping part one a week early. The topic for this episode is a call back to an old joke that Mark made way back in February 2018 when we interviewed the wonderful Jonah Matranga. In an attempt at “banter”, he said that Motley Crue were better than Kiss. The reality is of course that Mark has no strong feelings on this, but Chris had VERY strong feelings about it and has brought it up a whole bunch ever since. So in an effort to get to the bottom of this absurd question, we asked Dave to come back and defend Motley Crue whilst Chris defends Kiss. Mark has made a spreadsheet in order to try and make it somewhat objective. The result is, of course, hilarious. In part one we talk about their discography and legacy, amongst a bunch of other topics.

A prolific artist who is full of ideas and he straddles the line between the underground and the mainstream cusp, Matranga has fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE, and has worked with indie labels like Jade Tree to majors such as Atlantic. His music has been noted as influencing many notable bands ranging from Deftones to Blink-182.Simply put, there is no one quite like Jonah Matranga.Throughout his long career, he has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished like he has, after playing almost 4,000 shows. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy with him — a devoted fanbase, raw honesty, and an interest in making every show unique and personal. This has always been the most apparent in Matranga's solo and collaborative project performing as onelinedrawing. Jonah's performance as onelinedrawing has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where he often performed with only his guitar and his R2D2 sidekick. Tenderwild marks the return of onelinedrawing, which is the first time since 2004's The Volunteers (Jade Tree) that Jonah has used the moniker. This album brought together so many friends and fellow musicians that it only felt right to release it as onelinedrawing. Tenderwild is an uplifting journey that was written and inspired during a chaotic time of healing for Matranga. Contrasting between guitar driven rock songs and heartfelt intense ballads, Tenderwild is a collection of some of the best songs Jonah has ever written. The album features guest appearances from many of Matranga's close friends, such as: Zach Lind (Jimmy Eat World), Jeremy Tappero (Soul Asylum), Norman Brannon (Texas Is The Reason), Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional), John Gutenberger (Far), and Jake Snider (Minus The Bear). In our 117th episode, we're joined by the one and only Jonah Matranga! Jonah is the vocal and guitar legend behind Far, onelinedrawing, Gratitude, New End Original, and many others. We cover damn near everything in this conversation: Jonah's Boston roots and his early intro to music, moving to Cali and the 90s Sacramento scene, Far's legacy and their impact on music, the Gratitude album, his songwriting approach, collaborating with the likes of Lupe Fiasco/Mike Shinoda/Taproot, and deep dive into his new onelinedrawing record “Tenderwild” dropping June 24, 2022. Jonah could be at the centerpiece of the Podioslave world and we're here for it. This is a can't miss conversation. We also touch on mental health issues and artists we've lost to suicide fairly early in the episode. If you or a loved one is experiencing thoughts of suicide - don't hesitate to call below: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 800-273-8255 Opening transition music: onelinedrawing - “Tenderwild” Fade out music: onelinedrawing - “This is Water” Both songs are from the forthcoming album “Tenderwild” on Iodine Recordings. The line that seems to follow Will Haven is that they are ‘your favourite band's favourite band'. Does this mean that they didn't get the commercial success they deserved? It seems like those who are into WIll Haven, are really into Will Haven and for a lot of those people, Carpe Diem was the album they first heard. But we'll talk about how touring with Slipknot influenced the song writing on this record as well as the importance of clubs such as Sacramento's, Cattle Club that treated bands well, gave them a space to play and helped form a scene that fostered bands like Deftones, Far and of course, WIll Haven. Speaking of Far, we were lucky enough to have an appearance by Jonah Matranga on the episode! Buy Jonah's book, Alone Rewinding here. Shout out to all of those unsung heroes in our lives! This week, singer-songwriter Jonah Matranga helps Don and Chuck tackle their first truly art-house film with Lars von Trier's The Idiots. An engaging though often uncomfortable film, the Idiots tells the story of a commune of mostly young, emotionally lost, well-to-do people who expose society's true feelings for those they feel are below them. How do they do this? By pretending to be differently-abled. Jonah helps guide Don and Chuck through the film's themes of rebelliousness, the damage wealth and privilege can bring, and personal freedom. We then get into a very drunken heated debate about just how much agency Taylor Swift has in the corporate process of her image and songwriting, then we talk about some of our favourite albums of the year. We’re also incredibly drunk, which is kinda fun for you lot but was hellish for us to listen back to. Christmas is a time for cheer, and a time to eat, drink and be merry with family. For a lot of folk, some of these things may not be possible this year, which is why we felt even more duty bound to continue our very own festive tradition of getting really bloody silly at the end of the year. For the first since March, we decided to get in a room together and stare in lovingly into each other’s eyes to record this mega three parter. In the weeks leading up to this, we asked people to submit questions, ridiculous or otherwise, to us so we could turn this self serving nonsense into something for you lot. The results were…really messy. We also asked some of our previous guests to contribute too, so you’ll get to hear from co-hosts Anna Goldthorp and Vicki Henry, as well as from Ben Power of Blanck Mass, Jonah Matranga and of course, the most knowledgeable musical mind we know, Ferrucio Quercetti. In part one we answer a handful of these questions and have some of these co-hosts chip in. We start to get drunk and honestly, it’s a real fun time. Part two will drop next week where, as luck would have it, we address a bunch of questions about what Brexit will hold for touring bands going forward. Prescient stuff.

Brian Granik is a great person. He was super involved in the NJ scene back in the late 90s from promoting shows, being apart of Umbilical Records, playing with Houseboy and 5 Driver, and just always being front row to point that sweet finger of his up in the air when he sang along.  He was hesitant for a good amount of time until one day the stars aligned and he finally gave in. So I got him on Skype while we had many drinks and this is what we talked about: Going to school with other NJ punk rockers His thoughts on the scene itself Working at Hot Topic in the Rockaway Mall How Modesty Panel’s record got funded White Powdered Donuts Comp And a ton more Go check out houseofmerch.com which is run by Sean from Lanemeyer. I remember buying Far’s “Water & Solutions” in 1998 and being captivated by the voice I heard. This record helped me understand the different directions my musical tastes could go, and a voice that could take me so many different places. More than twenty years later, I still listen to it regularly. Throughout that time, I’ve remained a huge fan of all his work, we’ve worked on creative projects together, and I’ve been able to call Jonah a friend. We caught up recently to talk about the past two decades of his work. We dig into the origins of Far and the making of “Water & Solutions”, onelinedrawing and his solo career, the Gratitude record, the "Water & Solutions" 20th Anniversary Tour, and so much more. Thanks for listening.

The suspect wanted in connection with abandoning two empty rice cookers in the Fulton Street subway station and one in Chelsea was apprehended around 1am on August 17th. Larry Griffin of Bruno, West Virginia was seen in video being wheeled in a wheelchair out of a building in Longwood in the Bronx by paramedics with his head slumped to the side. Emergency responders had originally arrived at the location on reports of two people possibly overdosing, then identified Griffin from the subway security camera footage that had been circulated by police. Griffin had spoken to family members in West Virginia after the bomb scare incident and claimed he had found the rice cookers outside an Asian restaurant. Griffin's cousin described him as someone dealing with mental issues who had a tendency to pick up objects off the streets. The 26-year-old also has a criminal record in West Virginia and an active warrant was out for his arrest before the rice cooker incident. He is being held on a $200,000 bond and is facing three counts of placing a false bomb. His lawyers are reportedly in talks to arrange a plea deal and he will be back in court on September 6th. More than five years after Eric Garner's death, the NYPD announced on August 19th that the officer seen on eyewitness video putting Garner in a prohibited chokehold will be fired. Police Commissioner O'Neill announced that former officer Daniel Pantaleo would be fired and the Commissioner attributed the years-long delay to the U.S. Justice Department asking the NYPD to postpone the internal NYPD investigation. The U.S. Department of Justice began an investigation in 2014 into the actions of officer Daniel Pantaleo, and in 2019, the Department of Justice, now overseen by Trump-appointed Attorney General William Barr, announced that they would not pursue civil rights charges against Pantaleo, a decision they voluntarily chose to announce one day before the anniversary of Garner's death. Pantaleo's supervisor, Sergeant Kizzy Adonis, pleaded guilty to charges of failure to supervise and will lose 20 vacation days, with Commissioner O'Neill stating "nothing about her actions on that day either caused the use of the banned chokehold or delayed the arrival of medical attention for Mr. Garner". The city medical examiner's office concluded that the methods used to detain him during arrest, combined with his respiratory health, led to his death. A chokehold is a prohibited procedure for the NYPD to use, but video from the scene clearly showed officer Daniel Pantaleo with his arm around Eric's neck. The incident ignited protests across the city and country and Garner's dying words of "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry of the Black Lives Matter movement. In 2015, the city reached a settlement with the Garner family in which they received $5.9 million in response to their wrongful death claim. 15 years ago on August 26, 2004 — Protests begin surrounding the Republican National Convention scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden Two women who were arrested in 2015 for planning terrorist bombings in the city pleaded guilty this week to charges of teaching and distributing information about the manufacture and use of an explosive, destructive device, and weapon of mass destruction. 28 years ago on August 28, 1991 — A drunken subway operator derails a '4' Train at Union Square just after midnight, killing five and injuring 121 This will be the final week if you've been meaning to take a selfie with the the marble lions at the main branch of the NYPL. The famous lion sculptures, named Patience and Fortitude, that have guarded the entrance to the library at 42nd and Fifth since 1911, will be taking a much-deserved trip to the spa starting September 2nd when their $250,000 restoration begins. Some significant cracks have formed due to water damage and the Tennessee pink marble has been dirtied by air pollution and weather conditions. The lions will be enclosed in plywood and lasers will be used to zap contaminants from the surface of the stone, while cracks will be evaluated and repaired via a variety of methods. If you'll be missing the lions during the weeks they're under repair, the NYPL's online shop even offers replica of Patience and Fortitude as bookends for $150. Despite only ever achieving limited commercials success, Sacramento California’s Far have had a profound influence on a wide range of rock bands including Biffy Clyro, Incubus, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, Finch, Funeral For a Friend and Deftones. With the release of their forth full-length album Water & Solutions in 1998, Far created their ultimate musical statement, a concise blend of emotive hooks and hardcore sonics that before sadly splitting up barely a year later.Remfry say down with Far frontman Jonah Matranga to discuss the making of the album, how it came to have such a profound influence on what became the burgeoning emo movement of the mid 2000s and the reasons that Water & Solutions doesn’t suffer from the crass commercialisation of sincerity that plagued that scene. Whilst Far split up shortly after W&S was released, it was merely the beginning for Matranga, who went on to form a number of other projects including Onelinedrawing, New End Original, Gratitude, I is Another and Camorra. Alongside Nick Cave, Bruce Springsteen, PJ Harvey and David Bowie, Matranga was one of the 5 artists we highlighted back on Episode 00 in our ‘Venn Diagram of Riot Act’ episode. What do they put in the water in Sacramento? After chatting to Jonah Matranga and listening to Will Haven’s third album ‘Carpe Diem’, we’re left wondering what it is about that place which chucks out such genre bending bands like Will Haven, Far and Deftones. In our view, ‘Carpe Diem’ is the greatest expression of Will Haven’s unique songwriting talents. It’s always a struggle to accurately describe what this band sound like. Their preferred definition is ‘noise metal’ and we feel this is somewhat accurate. On this episode Chris and Weaver tell us just how important this album is to them. Weaver makes the bold assertation that this album is the distillation of everything he loves about music, and Chris professes his love for the weirdness of the record. On its surface it feels straight forward, but after a few minutes you realise that something is not quite normal. It has a feel, an atmosphere, which is all its own. Chris explains the mechanics behind their music and offers some thoughts on why this album in particular is the most complete Will Haven record yet. This podcast was once very different. We actually recorded once before then somehow manage to lose the file, and on this second go around the record had grown on Mark a lot. Initially he couldn’t really see why Chris and Weaver (and so many others) love this record, but the time in between the first take and the second had changed his mind quite dramatically, boldly stating that this record needs to go into our discography. How do you feel? Should ‘Carpe Diem’ by Will Haven be added into our discography? Listen and vote on our Facebook page.

I knew that learning how to drive would make my life easier, but I didn't know it'd also make podcasting easier. Yet here I am, fresh out of doing my second interview in my beaten up 2005 Ford Focus and I'm amazed at how good it sounds in there. Soft furnishings, man. I'm sure having doors that seal helps too.To wit - this is the second-time Jonah has been on this podcast (as you've probably gleaned by the title) which is super cool. I promise I'm not making a habit of bringing previous guests back, but sometimes it feels like you need to because the rapport was good the first time, or maybe you didn't cover everything you wanted to on the first go around. I can certainly attest to wanting more time with some people after the interview has finished, so I suppose a part two is a good way to get around to that.I found the flow of this conversation to be even better than the first time. Which is always surprising, but is perhaps indicative of some kind of connection that goes beyond mere press person asking press questions to a largely disinterested human being. My favourite thing about podcasting is connection. Not just the connection I have to my guests, but also to my audience. There's something real, raw, passionate, and genuine about the way individuals can form a bond over a microphone. Personally, I put it down to the elimination of distraction – we are constantly bombarded with information and content at all times, so taking the time to have an unadorned, focused conversation with another person is so valuable.Podcasts allow us to share that unique moment, to focus our attention the way the host and the guest focus there's. It's intimate. That's why I love it.We all connect in beautiful ways.On this podcast Jonah and I talk about his book, Alone Rewinding, white male privilege, touring, 20 years of travelling to the UK and a few more political things. It's an intense chat which went in a totally different direction than I thought it would, but I can't complain cause I think it turned out really well.Phone courtesy of Story Volumes/Ron van Rutten. Usually I try (with varying levels of success) to use these show notes to provide some context for the episode, but the fact of the matter is that this one is just so rich, so loaded with meaning and intention and love and weirdness, that I’d really rather you listened to the episode and not have the surprise of it ruined. But that’s unfair. Of course it is. You want to know what value this episode provides to you, and to do that you need context.I’ve known of Jonah Matranga for many years, and we met once a long time ago. Everyone that I know who’s met him always says that same thing – he’s such a nice guy. That’s true, he definitely is. You get a good sense of that in the interview. At some point in the interview I ask him a question which I hadn’t seen many people ask him before, a kind self-evident one: what musicians led you down the creative path? Jonah explodes with passion about his favourite artists, the records he loved when growing up, the things that gave him that creative spark. Miles receives a scathing review from one of his sketch writing peers regarding his most offensive comedy sketch. Miles, of course, reads the email aloud on the podcast and scathes the scather. The two get real for a little bit, so Miles can have a heart to heart with his best friend. Miles talks about his fear of the future and the increasing burden and sorrow he feels over his perpetual loneliness that he cannot seem to remedy. Miles attends a wedding in Florida with a girl he likes and comes back with hilarious stories of old man fights, food poisoning and gum offering Guidos. The two reminisce about 2002, specifically when they were serenaded by their favorite musician Jonah Matranga. A wonderful memory that helped solidify their friendship as well as Miles’s relationship with the super friends.
