“I know who you're talking about!” So, we did a thing… After almost 6 years into this podcast, this is the first time we've ever done a BREAKDOWN of a single track, and what better way to kick things off than SLAYER's ANGEL OF DEATH, which is without question “one of the most perfect thrash metal songs EVER written” and also just happens to be the killer opener on one of the most perfect thrash metal albums ever recorded, the Rick Rubin produced legendary 1986 masterpiece, Reign In Blood. Time to relive the memories of yore, including the joys of “lunchtime and slimy fingers”, and decide whether or not you will be joining “Team Hot Pocket or Team Snooch”. Prepare to comprehend what “abacinate” actually means and understand why it is so horrifying in context, realize that “Manghoul” isn't phonetically accurate but does make a gruesomely fitting nickname, and discover the reason why “time doesn't matter and isn't important” when you JOIN US as we go BEYOND THE BREAKDOWN into the essence of everything that makes ANGEL OF DEATH “one of the most perfect thrash metal songs EVER written”. Todays's topics include a detailed look at Rick Rubin, Slayer's enigmatic longtime producer, executive producer, label boss, and benefactor. Stay tuned, and you'll learn more about how the band made Reign in Blood... what fans think about it... what Jeff said about the, ahem, German content in "Angel of Death"... an update on what happened to the long-lost album cover artwork... and more. The old version of the Reign In Blood chapter is the most popular episode after the Jeff Hanneman tributes. Now that chapter is bigger and better. And badder. And deffer. This week, you hear the additions to the chapter in the new version of the unofficial, exhaustively researched band biography "SLAYER 66 2/3: A METAL BAND BIOGRAPHY" (REBORN & RE-REMASTERED 4TH EDITION).Click below to listen to Talkin' Slayer, Episode 15, the pre-update rundown of Reign in Blood:SPOTIFYAPPLEThe new 4th edition of the book is available in four formats. For a limited time, they're at a discount. OUR PRICES ARE CRIMINALLY INSANE!! Your options are...1) The Uncut Standard Version: Paperback, 6x9”, 639 pages, includes a full index, annotated endnote citations, and a works cited / bibliography section. 2) The Oversize Version: This monster paperback is 8.5x11”, 580 pages, with larger type. The format has size limits, so it omits the standalone works cited section and a few of the less awesome photos. It still includes the full annotated endnote citations and 50 b&w photos. The full real content is there. 3) The ebook has no index, but it's cheap, and it features two additional appendices, with mostly color photos.4) The paperback 6x9” Long Story Short… and Cheaper Version runs 400 pages. It features full research citations, and most b&w photos, but no appendices, index or standalone works cited section. it's the story of Slayer, and nothing but. This Short & Cheap version cuts a lot of important historical context and commentary. And it concentrates on the Slayer story as it unfolds. It's missing a ton of good stuff. En este episodio conversamos sobre “Reign In Blood”, el tercer álbum de Slayer, lanzado el año 1986.
It's time for a bumper edition of the PJP takeover as Ning brings onboard Lez & 80's thrash aficionado Gaz to look at one of the aforementioned genre's seminal albums, Reign In Blood by cuddly metalheads Slayer. Even the usual Jukeboxpod host would struggle to downplay the reverence of the big hitters ‘Angel of Death' & ‘Raining Blood' on this effort but how's the rest of the material hold up nearly 40 years on? The guys cover all aspects of the album and conduct a major internal discussion over track listing & song running times, heavy metal heaven indeed
We've already tackled Side One of our '86 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring MOP & RIB (“Puppets & Blood”), and now it's time to go through Side Two in order to reach our final verdict. As usual, there were difficult decisions to be made, and the deliberation was not easy, but we did it, and the only thing we can really say that will make any sense at all is that it's really hard to compare two such incomparable albums that are as equally incredible yet vastly unique as tacos and spaghetti. Get ready to find out how “left-handed guitar picks” can impact your playing and discover the mythical metal legend known as “Ozzy Dio”. It's time to learn which song is “Slayer's Enter Sandman” and become more familiarized with some of the more commonly used “country sayings” in the South that may or may not also apply to “fruit flies”. In short, “don't be a fricker” and JOIN US for the nail-biting conclusion to our '86 DEATH MATCH featuring Side Two of MASTER OF PUPPETS & REIGN IN BLOOD. For those who haven't been following the bouncing ball(s), we've been discussing the '86 DEATH MATCH since we did our '88 Death Match a few episodes back (which was a complete bloodbath all on its own!) so we decided “What better way to commemorate our 5th anniversary as ‘The Number 2 Podcast Ever' (behind Rogan) than to pit the two finest albums in the totality of thrash metal history against each other…to the death!?” If you thought our '88 Death Match between …And Justice For All and South Of Heaven was brutal, you'd better take a “get ready pill”, because you ain't seen nothing yet. As with each matchup in our HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH series, the stakes are raised ever higher & the carnage escalates exponentially, and our '86 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring Metallica's MASTER OF PUPPETS and Slayer's REIGN IN BLOOD is undoubtedly no exception. This was certainly not an easy task. In truth, it was quite “hard…rigid…difficult…” and given the sheer enormity of the task at hand, it was also downright “girthy”. From the most unbelievably legendary album openers (and closers) to the most haunting album art of any albums in thrash history, one thing remains clear with both of these ferocious audio offerings: “the bar is set”. Get ready to “mark ALL the times” and remember, even though this episode might be a tough pill to take for some, whatever you do, “don't spit it out, just swallow it”. Prepare to “flatten the herd” and brace yourself for “moments of assholism” as we discuss “an eternal force that goes on forever” when you JOIN US for a day of celebration as we commemorate 5 years of Metal Nerdery madness with some “special guesteses” in The Bunkerpoon and go deep inside the octagon with our 1986 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring “the most powerfully majestic” metal of MASTER OF PUPPETS and the “Picasso devil” infused, thrash evilocity of REIGN IN BLOOD. Udsendelse nr. 614. Sort Søndag er Danmarks vigtigste metal podcast. Hver uge får du 1 times tonser tunge toner, i selskab med værterne Anders Bøtter og Jakob Trolle. Sort Søndags trofaste "Giro 666 lyttere" byder ind med både nye og gamle numre, "Musiknyt" sørger for at holde dig helt opdateret og hver måned gennemgås et klassisk metal album i "Månedens Mesterværk".

“And in THIS corner…” Already knowing (going in) that our 1988 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH was gonna be “bigger than China”, the Bunkerpoon oversight committee made the executive decision to break this “hog” of an episode into a two-part cliffhanger dangler. At this point, we've covered side 1 and now we're tackling side 2 of Metallica's …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL and Slayer's SOUTH OF HEAVEN. And let's just say that since “the upstairs and downstairs no longer match” you're gonna wanna “get you some popcorn” and brace yourselves for multiple “hockey soccer” moments because this one was a bloodbath to the end. It's time to reconvene in the Bunkerpoon with “Mr. Black, Mr. Dice, and Mr. Shave” as we discuss the first “frontman drummer” in metal as well as which song “should have been track 11 on Reign In Blood”. Behold “the end of Metallica thrash and the most doomy Slayer song ever” and get a “sneak peek” of what our NEXT Death Match is gonna be when you JOIN US for PART 2 of our 1988 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH between METALLICA's …And Justice For All and SLAYER's South of Heaven. Atlanta-based metal band Alluvial, formed in 2017, channels a haunting blend of rapid-fire polyrhythms, sludgy atmospheres, and tight grooves. Comprising Kevin Muller (vocals), Wes Hauch (guitar, vocals), Tim Walker (bass), and Zach Dean (drums), the band recently unleashed their 2024 EP, "Death Is But a Door," aiming for an even more sinister sound than their previous album, "Sarcoma."Guitarist Wes Hauch, a recent guest on the Vulgar Display of Podcast, shares the band's creative ethos, expressing a perpetual pursuit of darkness in their evolving sound and imagery in their videos. The EP represents their commitment to intensifying their message and vibe, drawing parallels to iconic shifts in heaviness seen in legendary albums like Slayer's "South of Heaven" and "Reign In Blood."Having transitioned from their instrumental debut, "The Deep Longing for Annihilation," Alluvial introduced vocalist Kevin Muller in "Sarcoma," resulting in a remarkable synergy within the band. "Death Is But a Door'' showcases the evolution of their cohesion as a unit, delving into bleaker and heavier territories while maintaining a delicate balance.Rooted in death metal, Alluvial's sonic exploration extends beyond genre confines. From the thrash influences of Pantera and Metallica to the darker grunge tones of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, the band remains committed to keeping their audience on their toes with a diverse musical palette.Wes Hauch emphasizes the band's intent to create meaningful yet intense songs that elicit both terror and heartbreak. Despite the brutality inherent in their music, Alluvial navigates twists into clean passages and atmospheric ambience, inviting listeners to discover new dimensions within their compositions. With the collective background of its members deeply entrenched in the death metal scene, including experiences with bands like The Faceless and Suffocation, Alluvial's music promises a brutal journey. Hauch envisions their records as immersive experiences, a place where listeners can find solace with a unique tint to their perception. In their pursuit of musical exploration, Alluvial transcends gritty brutality, showcasing technical prowess alongside atmospheric depth. Wes Hauch affirms that the upcoming EP, more furious than their previous work, retains the unmistakable essence of Alluvial. As they continue to craft a distinctive sonic experience, the band invites listeners to delve into a world where influences meld into an unparalleled soundscape.Alluvial is gearing up for a nationwide U.S. tour, slated to kick off in January as the tour support for Veil Of Maya. This extensive tour will see them sharing the stage with fellow bands AngelMaker, Reflections, Left To Suffer, and Until I Wake.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.
After 39 years, LIVE UNDEAD may still be one of the finest recorded moments in SLAYER's budding thrash legacy, capturing a “kinda live” re-recording of the best parts of their hugely successful Metal Blade debut (SHOW NO MERCY) and their follow-up EP (HAUNTING THE CHAPEL) in a room full of rowdy, surly, and occasionally unruly, die-hard SLAYER fans with the objective of capturing the “live” performance & energy of a band forged & tempered by dates on the road with an improved sound and just the slightest tweak of production sorcery. It's time to uncover “the biggest scam on earth” and gear up for some “hijinks and shenanigans” as we ponder the question “does the upstairs match the downstairs?” and prepare to embrace “all the veins” of our brand new, exclusive “social media platform”. Get ready to “weedly-woo” and discover greeting cards perfect for “wordingsmiths” struggling to write “the perfect note”, grab “the last splash”, try “not to be a Taintler” and JOIN US as we get “a little dark” and discuss the timeless sonic magic that mimics a concert held in a dungeon foyer graced with hellscape decor as we take on SLAYER: LIVE UNDEAD. In October of 1986 Slayer released their 3rd studio album. The first of their albums to be produced by Rick Rubin (who's production made the music palatable to the non-initiated), the record is a sonic assault that cannot be denied. Hail Satan & lets talk Slayer, Reign In Blood!
Today's topic is the Reign in Blood album... long story short. Three weeks in a row, it's the longest episode yet. Last week, Patreon supporters heard about Slayer's triumphant first European tour. Next week, Slaytanic supporters will hear about the Reign in Blood tour. It wasn't a trainwreck, but it sure wasn't harmonious. SHOW NOTES, as referenced on this week's episode... After Episode Nine, Patreon supporters receive every weekly episode. Free listeners get every other episode, every other week. Learn more at Patreon.com/SlayerBook. Every week, host D.X. Ferris presents another chapter — sometimes two or three — in the history of Slayer, from the groundbreaking group's pre-history in Chile to their hazy, fractured, mysterious end in 2019. Slayer was the first Big Four band to break up. Why? Well, it's a long story... The Talkin' Slayer podcast program show is written, deeply researched, lightly edited, and mostly rehearsed, with some production value. This is an all-killer-no-filler podcast: The episode proper begins after roughly 60 seconds of introduction, tops. No need to skip the first 15 minutes. The music changes every week. Ferris is an award-winning writer. He has worked for Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, The AV Club, and Decibel magazine. He is a fan. He has opinions. He is the author of something like nine books, depending how you count them. Two are about Slayer. The first one is an entire book about the classic thrash album Reign in Blood, which is part of the fairly prestigious 33 1/3 book series. His bigger Slayer book, though, is the 2023 update of the full-on band biography "Slayer 66 & 2/3: A Metal Band Biography, POSTMORTEM Edition." (This is the third edition; it was previously known as "Slayer 66 & 2/3: The Jeff and Dave Years...."). And that book is mostly what he'll be talking about when we're talkin' Slayer. Most episodes are audio adaptations of chapters from that book. Some have original and/or bonus material. Welcome to 1986 when extreme metal flexed its muscles, pushing aside all other forms of heavy into the background. Some would argue that it just may be the greatest year in heavy music history given the preponderance of classic releases. Thrash metal was the prime mover with Slayer's unfathomable Reign In Blood leading the way. Hardcore punk also made some noise with Final Conflict's Ashes To Ashes as its ringleader (an album I consider to be the greatest record of the sub-genre ever issued). Cryptic Slaughter and The Accused represent the crossover/speedcore front, while Agnostic Front carry the NYHC banner. Of course, Black Sabbath, Ramones and Motorhead were still making glorious noise in '86, as well. Embrace the constant fear and ye shall be reborn!!!! Als (Thrash)Metalband auf einem Hip-Hop Label zu releasen... Hört sich jetzt nicht unbedingt nach einer Erfolgsstory an - Slayer bewiesen Ende der 80er das Gegenteil mit u.a. dieser Hymne.
One of the best things about thrash metal bands is you generally know what you are going to get with a new album.Although there might be slight variances and nuances here and there, the basic structure that defines thrash metal and becomes entwined in a bands DNA is always inherent in some capacity.Thankfully, US thrashers Municipal Waste follow the tried and true formula for thrash on their upcoming album Electrified Brain which will be released by Nuclear Blast Records on July 1.It is another slab of greatness from the band, and one which has been described by frontman Tony Foresta as an album full of “fun, fast, and ripping hardcorepunkmetal.”HEAVY caught up with Foresta on the eve of the albums release to chat about what to expect."It's exciting,” he enthused. “It feels like... God... it's been three years since we started working on this thing until now and it's finally coming out. It's been a long road and we worked really fucken hard on it, I can say that this is the hardest that we've ever worked on a record. Seeing it actually come out and being able to hold the vinyl in my hands it's like seeing your child born, but probably not as cool as that (laughs). We're real fucken excited. I'm literally biting my nails waiting for Friday to come so I can get this thing out there."As for goals going into the process, Foresta is of the belief that no rules are good rules.“We kind of just wanted to see where it would take us,” he explained, “because we never really do concept records or this is gonna be our slow album or this is gonna be our fast album... we just start writing shit and seeing what sticks and what we like. It did take a while to really get the ball rolling, especially with having everything shut down and I ended up moving to Florida so I moved away from my band mates. It was a lot of stuff that we're not used to happening in the process of writing a record. It worked out better because it actually gave us time to dig in and focus on the songs, rework shit and think more about the structures and just listen to the shit over and over again. I rate this record more than any other record I've listened to in my life - except for Reign In Blood of course (laughs)."In the full interview Tony talks more about Electrified Brain, the songs on it, recurring lyrical themes, new dynamics within the music while keeping true to thrash, the early days of the band, their influence on thrash metal in the modern era, not following trends, Belushi Speed Ball's song Ripping Off Municipal Waste and more.
There's not a whole lot of bands in the heavy metal world that have made the impact of the band Slayer. Being a forefather of many of the more extreme genres of metal, Slayer is important to the development of metal, and extreme music in large in ways that the average person seeing their T-Shirt in a Hot Topic won't understand. On this episode of the Depths of Music podcast we look at arguably Slayer's most iconic record, Reign in Blood to see what makes this less than 30-minute thrash fest a heavy metal classic. Content Warning: This episode includes some discussion of Slayer's lyrics witch cover topics such as: dismemberment, human sacrifice, Satan and The Holocaust. Want to keep up with Depths of Music? Do you: A: do what's “safe” and duplicate what you've already perfected (*yawn*)? OR B: continue to evolve and expand your sonic palette by changing your approach? Thankfully, SLAYER went with option B, toning down the sonic chaos and breakneck speed of REIGN IN BLOOD with darker, slower, heavier riffs and an even creepier lyrical vibe. JOIN US as we interview Kerry King's beard (just kidding; his beard couldn't be reached for comment) and immerse ourselves into the brooding and sinister evilocity of SLAYER's sophomore Def Jam release, SOUTH OF HEAVEN. The legendary Slayer just stepped of the stage for the last time on their farewell world tour. It is an appropeaux time to give our own send off to our version of "The Fab Four". Slayer will always remain trve to our Metal hearts so we had to do it in style. Renowned music author D.X. Ferris literally wrote the book on Tom and the Boys, not once but twice, with "Slayer 66 2/3: The Jeff And Dave Years" and "33 1/3: Reign In Blood". So we tapped Mr. Ferris to co host this special episode to share all his insights and experiences. We chronicle his working relationship with the band, The Relentless Killogy opus, and all of our own personal favourites and band moments. All making for an unforgettable episode. So press play. No mercy will be shown. Not even a divine intervention will spare you from the repentless Hell that awaits. Horns!! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. It's an MRW Flashback Friday! We pick up where we left off last week, discussing one of the big 4 of Thrash. Did Matt & Sailor create a convincing enough argument to slay Jake & Ed? Will Nickelback ever just go the hell away? Is it possible for Dave Mustaine to ever shut his yap? Was the Slayer Mixtape magic to Jake & Ed? Did it make them fall in metal love with Slayer? All these questions (or at least most of them) will be answered today on Episode 4 of Metal, Rock & Whiskey, so bang your head and tune in. Theme song "The Whiskey Always Wins" performed by When Particles Collide. https://www.whenparticlescollide.com (https://www.whenparticlescollide.com/) Support this podcast
The all-Slayer episode is finally here, and we are jacked!!! At long last, Fraz gets to introduce Devin to such classic albums as Reign In Blood (we DID just say classic), Seasons In The Abyss, Undisputed Attitude, South Of Heaven, Christ Illusion, and more!! We also talk about which kind of covers album Slayer should tackle next, metal bands consisting solely of Disney villains, and how, at the end of the day, Slayer is as beautiful as nature. Also, Devin gets Fraz into Mclusky, we define the term 'break-neck', and invent the term 'over-orcing'. All of this PLUS discussion on Devin and Fraz's two favourite things on the internet; youtube comments and fail videos! It's our best episode yet, especially considering that God hates us all. Hail Slayer! Homework from Hell: Ep 6 - Grindcore Cattle Decapitation - Karma.Bloody.Karma (2006), The Anthropocene Extinction (2015) Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb (2007) Napalm Death - Scum (1987), Enemy Of The Music Business (2000), Apex Predator - Easy Meat (2015) Nasum - Helvete (2003), Fuck The Facts, Disgorge Mexico (2008)
It's our first ever tech problems-free show, and we couldn't be more excited! In this episode, Devin gets schooled in and terrified by the ways of old-school death metal! We talk Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, At The Gates, Death, Carcass, and so much more! We come up with some sweet ideas for Cannibal Corpse merch (don't steal them), and wonder which death metal band is the richest (monetarily, not in grotesque imagery; that would really be splitting hairs). Plus Devin does his best impression of an owl laughing, and Fraz dishes out a gold star (or is it a pentagram?)! EPIC. Homework from Hell: Ep 5 - Slayer - Reign In Blood (1986), South Of Heaven (1988), Seasons In The Abyss (1990), Undisputed Attitude (1996), Christ Illusion (2006)

Publisher and author DX Ferris (6623press.com) joins Bill and Brian to discuss Slayer's entry into the metal class of '86 Reign in Blood (1986, Def Jam). Ferris talks about taking his fandom to the extreme, from discovering the band as a teenager in Pittsburgh in the 80s, to having the opportunity to write two books on the band - one being the entry for this album in the acclaimed 33 1/3 series. Bill, Brian, and Ferris then discuss the influence of Rick Ruben and Andy Wallace on the record, Dave Lombardo's genre defining double bass drum, Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King's unique and sick guitar style, Tom Araya's unique vocals and spirituality, and more as we make our way through the album track by track!

By the fall of 1986, the Los Angeles heavy metal band Slayer had two solid but unspectacular records, 1984’s Haunting the Chapel and 1985’s Hell Awaits, to their name. Meanwhile, producer Rick Rubin had started a record company, Def Jam, in his dorm room in NYU, and after a handful of successful rap releases, was on the lookout for new talent for his label. In a New York City nightclub, he found it in Slayer. D.X. Ferris, in his taut and entertaining 33 1/3 series bookReign in Blood, explains how this seemingly incongruous paring of a rap guru and four speed-metal merchants ended up making rock history with their 1986 thrash-metal release Reign in Blood. Rubin, whose genius has always resided in his ability to help artists capture the essence of their greatness, found the band’s lengthy, more traditional heavy metal songs unappealing. What he liked, Ferris argues, was the faster, heavier, and aggressive aspects of Slayer’s material. This made him a perfect partner for the band’s late guitarist, Jeff Hanneman, who loved hardcore punk rock almost as much as he loved heavy metal. The resulting album, Ferris maintains, is “the gold standard for extreme heavy metal.” The LP’s ten songs are played with military precision and at a frenzied pace. And its lyrical themes are nothing if not disturbing: serial killers, witches burned at the stake, pandemics, the fall of Heaven, and perhaps most extreme of all, a meditation on Nazi sadist Josef Mengele, Auschwitz’s depraved “Angel of Death.” This last song, as Ferris shows, stirred charges of anti-Semitism and encouraged CBS Records to back away from its deal to distribute the LP. By drawing on interviews with everyone from members of Slayer to fans, the witty and engaging Ferris makes a convincing case for the album’s significance and its continuing influence in the world of heavy metal. D.X. Ferris is the author of Reign in Blood and has contributed pieces for RollingStone.com, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Popdose, Village Voice, and Decibel, among other publications. He is also the creator of Suburban Metal Dad, Heavy Metal Game of Thrones Reviews and is the proprietor of Pentagrammarian.com, the world’s only metal-oriented grammar and usage website. For his work he was named the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists’ Reporter of the Year in 2011 and is the recipient of numerous other journalism and writing awards.
