Parental Advisory Explicit Content. We're joined by our good friend Sam “The Man” Wetz to discuss AC/DC's dirtiest album ever: Ballbreaker. With an in depth lyrical breakdown of songs like “Cover You in Oil” and “The Honey Roll”, you'll be shocked by just how lewd and politically incorrect AC/DC was in 1995. Is Ballbreaker a concept album about perpetual male ejaculation? Is Ballbreaker also a politically reactionary album with a bias against the Clinton administration? Did the release of the album cause the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal to happen? Also was Ballbreaker a reaction to casual fans who got into them with The Razor's Edge? Why don't AC/DC still play “Hard as a Rock” and “Ballbreaker” in concert? What do we think of the “Big Gun” single and Rick Ruben as a producer? We also discuss the righteous return of Phil Rudd, what Rudd brings to the band, Beavis and Butt-head's role in AC/DC's classic rock canonization, AC/DC in the grunge era, the dark and bluesy influence of Powerage on Ballbreaker and we say “balls” even more than we did in our last episode. So pour yourself a whiskey on the rocks, get ready to break some balls and whatever you do: don't let your wives or daughters hear what you're listening to!!

They say that by the time he retires, Pat Cummins could be one of Australia's most successful cricket captains. And if 2023 is anything to go by, "they" might be right. Pat captained the team winning The ODI World Cup, The ICC World Test Championship and retaining The Ashes. And individually, he was not only named The ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year, but also signed a record-breaking contract to play in India in the IPL this year. So yeah, Pat wins a lot. But this episode isn't just about cricket. Because as Pat talks about with Hugh, Ryan and Josh, he's lost a lot as well - especially in his personal life. Most notably, Pat tragically lost his mother Maria to cancer last year (2023), which he opens up about here, sharing how important life is outside of cricket - an approach that's trickled through to the entire team. If you love cricket (maybe even as much as Hugh & Josh), or just want to hear how someone deals with struggles while at the top of their game, this is a special episode. Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

Cam's phone has been ringing. It's a lot of his small business friends and they're experiencing similar things. They're feeling pressure. They're feeling squeezed. ----- When an orange is squeezed, orange juice comes out. We know this. We know that sun and good soil and water and maybe some fertilizer help that orange develop that juice. We know the ingredients, we somewhat control the ingredients, and we know the goodness that comes from a squeezed orange. What happens, though, when you and I are squeezed? What happens when life puts pressure on you and me? What ingredients are we drawing on when we're squeezed? And what results? I read this question in Rick Ruben's new book about creativity. He pulled it from an old school motivational speaker named Wayne Dyer. The metaphor's been around the block a few times. But, it still resonates. In the past two weeks, I've had four small business friends share that things aren't going well for them right now. A fifth one chimed in this morning with the same report. Regardless of what the economists say – some say it's great out there, others say it's dire – for my five small business friends and me, we're feeling squeezed. Pressure. One friend desperately needs orders. And when these times happen, he must remember to do the thing that's gotten him out of these pressures several times before. He has a beautiful piece of property, and he has to remember to sit comfortably and look out over the expanse – over the pasture and at the trees and the pond. That view provides inspiration and creativity. He has to remember to do it. Otherwise fear and worry will have him buzzing around thinking that busyness is the solution. Another needs walk-in traffic to his store. And for him, busy hands set his mind to creatively solving his problems. He takes on big projects knowing that somewhere along the line something will trigger a solution to his problem. Busyness presents him a solution. But the question comes back to what are the ingredients we're putting into ourselves so that when we're squeezed something positive comes out? Life's going to squeeze you. For the vast majority of us, it has already, I'm sure. How are you preparing for the inevitable squeeze? Have I prepared appropriately for this squeeze? What are the ingredients I'm putting in? And what's the pressure doing to them? Time will tell. Assuming the squeeze ends at some point, I can then look back and evaluate. Right now, my effort includes a work ethic having me make lots of phone calls to interact with old colleagues and working to meet new ones. I'm forcing curiosity by asking them “what's new?”, “what's going on?”, “where's your pain?” I'm working hard to keep a positive attitude about letting go of what's always worked in favor of trying something new. I'm asking, “What do people want from me?” not stating “Here's what people should want from me.” These success ingredients I've used before but I'm having to create new variations. I'm working to embrace the struggle. To embrace the squeeze. Because, so often, this is where the good stuff happens. And I'm counting on it again. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep it Real.

In fact, it's so epic that (picture this) we are holding an invisible boombox over our heads outside your window while blaring Peter Gabriel, asking you to listen. Got the picture? Okay cool: Because we're chatting with Ione Skye and Ben Lee, married podcasters that you may know from their hilarious Weirder Together podcast. Or maybe you know him as a prolific singer-songwriter, and her from the high school of your John Hughes teen cinema dreams. Or maybe, just maybe, you were in a cult with them at some point. It's not statistically improbable because they've been in a few culty situations, from chasing Qigong, to following Gurus and slinging DoTerra essential oils. Heads up: This isn't our regular format. It's more of a Rom-Com than the stuff of True Crime, but these two are thoughtful and funny as hell on the subject of loving people through—and out of—cults. And we're always interested in hearing from people who've dabbled and ducked out before things got too fucky. Lots of cultiverse easter eggs in this one, from David Lynch to QAnon, Theranos to Sean Penn, Rick Ruben to Ruby Tuesday's–just kidding about that last one. Creating The Real You If we could do this in half an hour that would be magic and I am not a magician. Creating the real you is a work in progress and you wouldn't be here if you thought otherwise. This episode is inspired by reading 'The Creative Act' by Rick Ruben famously from a music background. As I read it (well I am not finished yet) I kept comparing his thoughts on creativity in music to that of personal development, and self-improvement. The terms of finding our true voice and the privilege of being able to create just resonated with me and I hope I can resonate with you with my comparisons and a process or two. I also look at what stops us in this creating of our true self, those limiting beliefs of "I'm not worth it" or " I don't belong here" and how we can change those and find more supporting beliefs and their associated emotions and behaviors. But it's been inspired been inspired by a guy called Rick Rubin who wrote the book The Creative Act. And it inspired me to go through the creative act as being thing, the creative act of personal development, creating the real you, the ultimate vision of you, the you you want to be and aspire to be. And we'll get there. So come with me and see what I compared. Let me share you what I found. Or share with you what I found. Okay. Have a listen after this. Hey, welcome. So what I would like to do is fill that time that you share with me with the most shiny golden nuggets to help improve your life, to get your goals, your wishes, your dreams to come to fruition quicker, bigger, better than you could ever imagine. Using your imagination, using hypnosis, using NLP, Neurolinguistic programming, all of that. Using all things of the mind, no brain hacks, but real, solid processes to deconstruct what people do to become great. And, then find the processes that we can install that in ourselves to support you in your dreams, and get what you really want in life. Anyway. Who am I? I'm Paul. Paul Clough. And just going to have conversations with you in this podcast and get you thinking, but also share those processes because we're going to have so much fun. That's it. We're going to have fun for a change because we can sit down for a spell and have more fun than we can stand creating the world we want to live in and be the person we want to be in that world. The only limitation the only limitation is your imagination. And you got bucket loads, by the way. Bucket loads. Have a listen. You really must. This is personal development. Unplugged with Paul Clough. In simplicity, there is genius. In simplicity, there is genius. This episode is inspired inspired by a book called The Creative Act Speaker A: Hey, friend, how you doing? And creating the real you. This episode is inspired inspired by a book I'm not through yet, but in the middle of reading. And it's called The Creative Act, and it's by a guy called Rick Rubin, rick Rubin from the music world. And it's all about creativity. But the thing is, here's something. These were my words, and I said, wow. And I said it. Our lives are, our creation events. Experiences don't shape us. It's how we act and react and learn from them. And that's what creates us. You, me. And they were my words. And they were my words, which were inspired by reading bits and pieces or the bits and pieces that stuck with me from this book. Yes, it is about music, but it's also about just creativity. And, I wanted to change this slightly. Everything I read you see, as I do these things, it seems whatever I read, listen, or just see, I tend to compare with my hour personal development with the term personal development. And in that personal development, I'm guessing in my mind, the aim of personal development for me is to create the ultimate me, the ultimate vision of me, whatever that is. I want to get there. And then I want another ultimate vision and another one after that just to keep can I grow to be my best? And that's what I want for you. I want you to grow to be your best and then even better than that. And that's why the things that, I've read in this book seem to just I don't know, they came in parallel with this thing, this thing of the creative act. And, here's a quote. Here's a quote from the book. It's the privilege. I say that again because I want to really be mucking up. Let's do it again. It's the privilege, the creative act. I've called it personal development, by the way. Creating us. We're choosing it. We're not being ordered to do it. And if you don't want to do it, don't do it. And, that's exactly what we say here and in NLP. Isn't that being a cause, not the effect. We're choosing choosing it choosing the creative act or choosing the creative act of creating the ultimate, the best version of ourselves. Being at cause, not the effect. And blaming everyone else and the weather, the people around you, the financial situation and everything else. No. Being at cause, taking responsibility, choosing choosing this creative act of being who you really are. Striving for it. But you see, sometimes sometimes, I guess we don't want to do those things. But we don't want to do the things that we really know. Know that we well, it would make our life better. But we still don't do the bloody things, do we? And, why is that? If we know they're good for us, why don't we do them? Why do we then go on to that fex side and blame everything else? Well, I think there's a little reason, maybe a big reason, but there is a reason that came to my mind. And you see, sometimes when we think about doing this creative act, stepping out of our call it comfort zone or familiar, I like to call it the familiar zone stepping out into something new which would really forge that new or the best version of us, we pull back because we get a negative emotion. Maybe it's fear, maybe it was anxiety. Maybe it was that bloody impostor syndrome that people bang on about. We get the limiting belief, well, I'm not good enough. I don't belong here. All that stuff. And it's there to protect us, I guess. Well, I know it is. It's your unconscious mind saying, I don't want you to be like a failure. I want you to succeed, I want you to be safe. But the thing is, when we feel fear, anxiety, we have that limiting belief of, I'm not good enough, I don't belong here. It doesn't feel bloody safe, does it? It doesn't feel safe at all, because it did back then, when you were little, give you a little bit of fear, a little bit of worry. You didn't do things, you weren't stupid, you just didn't do silly things, not stupid things. And it saved you from those feelings, but it kept doing it more and more and more. And we know if we sat down quietly, intellectually, and that's a word doesn't normally come in my conversations, but intellectually, we know that some of these things are really good for us, some of them maybe a bit bonky, but they're good, they're going to forge this ultimate vision of ourselves into reality. So we get to choose, don't we? There's a big but there but against that anxiety, the fear, the limiting beliefs, but we do get to choose if we ask some right questions, because we got to choose wisely, haven't we? You don't do anything silly and harm yourself without not without thinking, then harm yourself. But you don't do anything without thinking and mitigate any danger, any fears, any anxiety. Get it out the way, you'll be safe then. So you first of all have to think, I guess, will this thing I want to do that I'm a little bit anxious about, I don't feel like doing it, but will it make my life better if I do it? Will it make me a better version of myself, a better version of you? And you can just sit with that and go, well, actually, if I got that experience, yeah, and maybe I don't quite know how to do it yet, and the word yet, but if I put that as a goal out there, work towards it, would that make my life better or worse? Would it make me a better version of me or not? Now, you have to be honest in those thoughts, not let the anxiety, the fear, the limiting belief get in the way. You push them to one side, you park them, because you're not going to get eaten by a saber toothed tiger and all that stuff, which is where the old reptilian brain comes in to save you. Fight and flight, you've already got that. Fight and flight is hardwired in your neurology, so if something did happen, you're safe. You would act and behave in a way to keep you safe. So park that for the moment and just look at the outcome, what you would achieve if you did this thing that you were frightened about, you were anxious about, would it make a better version of you? Would your life be better? Would the opportunities be better? Now, if the answer is no, and you have to be honest, because sometimes we get peer pressure, don't we? We get pressure from all the noise out there, and there's a bloody lot of noise sometimes. The bloody social media giving you all that pressure. That supposedly what everybody's doing. So we have to do it. But if the honest answer is, well, actually, it won't make my life any better, it won't make a better version of myself. Do you know what the answer is? Don't do it. Because as you go back to that quotation, it's a privilege, creating us, we're choosing it, not being ordered to do it. If you don't want it, or, you don't want to do it, don't do it. And that's what I'm saying here. If you're honest about it and you go, do you know what? Cloughy: Can you change your belief just like that Speaker A: The result will not make me better? Don't do it. Stand up. Just say no. Because once you've said no, it disappears. But if the answer is honestly yes, then we have to think, well, let's just guide our, unconscious mind a little bit, because we've got imagination. And no one even in when they try to no one can control your imagination. It's in your mind, it's in your head. You have it. It's yours to do whatever you want. So we could go into the future, and if you were to think about it now, and you might want to do it, you might want to do it now. So if you could and there, you're not you haven't got anything that needs your attention or anything like that, driving a car and all that stuff, if you could just do it now, you might just want to listen to it, if you are doing this driving stuff. So you know what it's about. But if you could do it now, and if you could close your eyes, just take away the distractions, you could think into the future now, having achieved that thing, what would it be like to have done it already? See what you'll see, having got the results, the success. Hear what you'll hear. Hear the internal voice. See those pictures in your mind of new opportunities having already been successful in this venture. Maybe the taste and smell of success. And then when you see and you hear and you smell and you taste, feel the feelings. And as you feel those feelings, just look out even further to the future and notice, having got this achievement, what new opportunities will come your way now? That continued growth, that next level, as it were, of the ultimate vision of you that you could look towards. and as you think of all of that, just notice what belief you have about yourself. What belief did you have? What belief must you have right now, having achieved all of this? just think of that and write it down. If you can. Write that belief down, that's right now, just come back to me for the moment, open your eyes and think, going back to those old fears, that old anxiety, that old belief I'm not good enough, I don't belong here. I don't know why I do that funny voice. It's not funny, is it? But I don't belong here. Where did that bloody belief come from? Where did it come from in the past? Was it yours? Was it somebody else's? Did someone say it to you? Because others opinions are not your business. Your opinions are ah, your business. And hopefully your opinions are based on sound experience and data, not other people's, not other people's words that aren't backed up with data and facts. So just think where did that belief I'm not good enough, come from? Well maybe it came from that little you back then in the past when your unconscious mind tried to protect you from maybe feeling embarrassed and it stopped you doing the thing that would embarrass you. But that was then and it's not now. We've talked about the past is a past and it doesn't exist. It only exists in your head. So let it go. So if that belief doesn't serve you, what would that better belief be? You've just thought of one as we went into the future. But even now, knowing that, would there be a better belief to have that would really support you and keep you? mhm? And you might say, well hey Cloughy, hey, hey slow down a bit, take a breath. Because I was getting excited, wasn't I? Take a breath and just ask, I'm asking you Cloughy, can you just change your belief just like that? Can we just change just like that? Well I think you can. You can change your belief in a moment by the way. And it doesn't matter whether it's a core belief because some people used to say, oh, you can never change a core belief. Well that's BS. You can change a belief in a moment. the old four minute mile people used to believe you die if you run under four minutes a mile in under four minutes. Then good old Roger Bannister came along, beat it by just something like a half a second, didn't he? Wasn't much, just a little bit. First man to beat the four minute mile get under four minutes. What happened in the weeks to come? Every bugger was doing it. They changed their belief because they saw in that moment what they believed couldn't be done. They saw it happen, it became real. So they can change a belief in a moment. And if that new belief serves you better, keeps you safer, your unconscious mind will take it on. Imagine having that powerful, protective, safe belief that empowers you Speaker A: So again, just as we did before, knowing that you can imagine and visualize, now you know what the success looks like having achieved that result. Imagine doing it that way. So if you were to just close your eyes again, imagine having that wonderful, powerful, protective, safe belief that empowers you, puts you at cause, taking responsibility. And when you do that, imagine doing that thing to achieving that success. Haven't quite got there yet. You're going to do it. What's it like taking those steps? Maybe they're little baby steps. Some people don't like baby steps but just call them small steps and getting bigger. Walking, then skipping, then running, noticing the new opportunities coming your way even when you haven't even got the final success yet. But you're still seeing new opportunities, maybe meeting new people, learning new things. Feel what that's like. See what you'll see, hear what you'll hear. And notice the feeling. And be honest. Does it feel safer? Safer than that old fear and anxiety? Does this way protect you better? And if you said to your unconscious mind, hey, have a look, have a look at this. Notice this is safer than what you used to do. Because that old way of doing things was from a long time ago and it's no longer appropriate. These are using my all my skills now and learning more. And just ask your unconscious mind would it be better, would it be better to protect me in this way? This or something better? And you see that's well, you can open your eyes again. If you did close them, by the way, wouldn't that be better? And that's how you can change. Just like that. You might have to do it a couple of times, but bucket that's not too much to ask, is it? When you go to the gym, do, you get supersonically fit in that first bloody hour that you go to the gym and you never have to go again? Well, of course you don't. You do. Bit by bit. You build up you build up that skill of visualization. Because once you get that empowerment, things become clearer. You get to feel the feeling. And you see there's a great quote in that book and it said this ultimately, your desire to create and I put in brackets, the real you, the real me must be greater than your fear. Well, we've just shown it by when we go into that visualization, doing things a different way, that desire will be so much greater than your fear because you'll have better resources than fear itself. And that's why we just say to our unconscious mind, look at this, I'm going to show you my conscious mind will now show you that fear and anxiety is now inappropriate. It doesn't work in this event. And if you think of it as being and finding your real voice, there was another quote. You're the only one with this voice. Think of that. No one else in this world before, ah, in the past, now or in the future will have your voice. people say we always used to say in hypnosis, you're unique. And it was a bit of a word. It is a word, but it was a bit of a saying. But it's true though, isn't it? You are unique. You're the only one with this voice. Let's not hide it. Let's, grow it, train it to become such a wonderful musical sound in the world, to resonate, resonate in you and resonate in others. And all you're doing is doing this thing about creating the real you, taking the responsibility to do it because no other swore then no other person will help you will do it for you. They can't. It's no good. You're saying, can you do it for me? No. You have to take those steps. You take the responsibility. And when you do that, the, oh, if only looking back, oh, if only I could have I shoulda, all that bullshit would disappear. And even sometimes, because I'm not going to say every time you do this, you're going to have complete success because things happen. Sometimes we don't. Maybe we just make not the wrong choice, but we make a choice, which isn't in that way, but we learn. We learn from the results that we get. They're not failures. We learn from the results we get. We are flexible. And we head for that goal again, having learned from it. And it's the learnings that keep you free. Learnings, that keep you safe. And remember or re remember intention. When you set your intention and you decide to have the will to do whatever it takes, your confidence in your competence will grow immeasurably. Because you've set your intention, you're going to do this. I'm going to do whatever it takes to get there. And I'm going to use that wonderful positive belief. I'm going to find my voice. I'm going to find this version of me that I have out there. And then when I get there, I'm going to have another one. Yeah. Take a breath. Cluffy. Take a breath. You see, I made a meta note of this, as if I was looking down at my notes and what I was talking about and the meta note was this will always be a work in progress. So there's always another opportunity. There's always time in the now to keep creating. And you can learn from everything. That was the other thing I wanted to tell you. Doesn't matter what you're experiencing, there's some learnings there that will help you grow. Just as I was reading this book about creativity, and I haven't even finished it, and I found these wonderful sayings that inspired me because we can take it. It's like taking different skills and put them into different areas because that's what we do. it's not only skill stacking, but it's using skills in different areas because there's always a different way to do things or not manipulate, but evolve using different skills. And all you have to do, I guess, is just be a little bit curious. And I thought to myself, well, why is this all important? What's so important about this bloody message that, you've come out with cluffy. And I thought to myself, well, why is this important? Paul Clough: We have the privilege of choosing to create ourselves Speaker A: And it comes down to the real, basic, simple statement. You I we get to choose. We get to choose. We have that wonderful privilege, as Rick Rubin says, of choosing to create us. and it is a privilege, isn't it? And I always say, sort of say this to so many people, whatever your belief, if this was the one and only life we have, it is a privilege, because you get to choose. You get to do this. You get to choose. And if you don't, you're wasting that privilege. So let's go do it. And if you want to read the book, it is a great book, Rick Rubin, and it's called The Creative Act. It's a great book. I haven't finished reading it. I'll come back with more I'm sure inspired me. Great book. There you go. I hope, as usual, that I communicated, and maybe with a bit more passion than I thought, but I communicated my thoughts in a way that inspires you just a little bit. Just a little bit to think, to muse, to visualize that ultimate vision of yourself, the beliefs that support that ultimate vision of who you really can be. And you take that responsibility. If I've done that job done, I'd love to hear if I did that, and if I didn't, how could I have done it better? And maybe, what were the effects of you going into that visualization and taking that responsibility? I'd love to know what the effects were, the results, because then I can share them in another episode, because when we share the results, we get it inspires others. It's not ego saying, oh, look at me. It's no, look, this is what can be done. And we need people to tell to share what can be done, to inspire others. So if you'd like to drop me a line on, an email, it's feedback at personal developmentunplug.com only comes to me, and obviously, if I do talk about it, it will be anonymous. Not me, you. That would be great. And there's a button, that button of sharing or following, if you could press that, that would make a huge difference. If we all did it, I do it. I've got a couple of followings of myself and other people because I know it makes a difference to their podcast as well. If you can follow and, subscribe, it just helps make people more aware they get it in their inbox or whatever as a suggestion to look at, and it will help them, I'm sure. So if you could do that, that'd be wonderful. And share the episodes as well. Share the podcast. Hey, I want to take a breath. I need a cup of coffee. I need to relax and see what comes after this. So do have more fun than you can stand. Wallow in joy and happiness. Yeah. Nearly Christmas, too. Isn't it, though? We can spread it, too. Spread everything. Have fun. Till the next time, my friend. Thank you for your time. I am so grateful that you would just spend some time with me. So let's create the life and the world we want to live in. I'll see you soon. Bye bye. It's time to fly. You are now leaving the unclouded mind of Paul Clough. It's time to fly on your own. Be brave, my friend. Personal development. Unplugged.

On today's show we chat to Tammy Kanat - a Melbourne-based fibre artist and weaver, who's tapestry work, which she posts on her Instagram to over 150k followers, is quite literally mind blowing.  Having professionally begun her career in the arts as a jewellery designer - an industry she worked in for 12 years - it was actually when she was renovating her home back in 2010 that Tammy wanted a woven tapestry, but couldn't find the right one - so, she made it herself.  Starting with that very first piece, Tammy completely repurposed her artistic talents and understanding into textiles. Within 6 years she gained international recognition, with celebrities regularly inquiring about her pieces - and has since produced commissions for both local and international clients.  – Often when Tammy is weaving she will listen to chanting and meditation music such as Deva and Miten, however she is also a big fan of rap music, namely Russ. Tammy has also been reading Rick Ruben's book, The Creative Act: A Way Of Being and The Other Side: A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World by Jennifer Higgie. – Find Tammy on Instagram and online at tammykanat.com   In February 2024, Tammy will be exhibiting her work at The Melbourne Art Fair with Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert –  Wanting more? The Importance of Confidence in the Creative Process: "Invite someone else into your process. Have someone else that you can use as a sounding board who can help bring their taste to match your taste or maybe not even sometimes match it, but sometimes to challenge it. So that you can really be clear on what it is that you are aiming at, what quality you consider to be the standard and what you're willing to accept and not accept when it comes to what you're creating."— Mike Brennan I recently had the chance to watch a documentary on Amazon Prime about the making of Tom Petty's iconic album, Wildflowers. It was a fascinating deep dive into the creative process and the power of collaboration. I couldn't help but draw some valuable insights from this documentary that I wanted to share with all of you.

Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2023 24:51

Welcome back to Season 10 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (that's finally being taught in our schools today) and emotional intelligence training (used in our modern workplaces) for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and an educator with a passion for learning and launched this podcast 5 years ago with the goal of bringing ALL the leading experts together (in one place) to uncover the most current research that would back up how the brain learns best, taking us ALL to new, and often unimaginable heights.    For today's episode #294, we are going back to the basics, with the Fundamentals of Understanding How Our Mind Works, that started for me with Bob Proctor's Youth Mentor Program, that I was the Executive Director with, until the program dissolved with the Sept 11th, 2001 tragedy. This weekend I reviewed ALL of these cassette tapes, and when I got to the last one, the tape broke. I didn't want to miss anything that might be important that I could share with you here, so I watched a YouTube video on “how to fix a broken cassette tape” and what do you know, it worked! Times really are different than the days we used to carry these cassette tapes around, with our Sony Walkmans, but what came through loud and clear to me, was that the messages and lessons we were teaching those teens were timeless, and it all began with an understanding of our mind, how it works, and how to use it. The program consisted of 6 SERIES: SERIES 1, The Fundamentals (you can see these tapes in the image in the show notes).  SERIES 2 went into the importance of your attitude, SERIES 3, Your Self-Image, SERIES 4- How to Set and Achieve Goals, SERIES 5- The Laws of the Universe and how to use these laws for your health and relationships and SERIES 6 reviewed all lessons, with the goal that the teens would experience PRAXIS, or they integrated their beliefs with their behaviors. It was strange for me to hear some of these tapes that were recorded back in early 2001, using conference calls, but what was interesting to me, was hearing the teens explaining exactly HOW these timeless principles were helping them. Teens would call into a conference call line, from around the world, and meet with Bob Proctor monthly, to review these lessons, and how they were applying them. Nothing made him happier than to hear someone applying what he had dedicated his life teaching, and I know it surprised him that the teens seemed to pick these concepts up quickly. This makes sense to me now that we know how neuroplasticity works, as it's much easier for a young person to learn something new, because their brains are more plastic, and they also have less habits to overcome. I listened to one call, and there was a young guy named Greg who shared how he used visualization to go from the last place on his golf team to be the 3rd highest on his team. I wondered why he picked the 3rd highest, and not first on his team, but anyway, that was his goal, and he achieved it. We asked him “what exactly did you do when you were visualizing?” and he said “he put himself at the 5th hole on the golf course, then pictured himself hitting the club, feeling the wind on his face, and imagined where the ball would land.” His vision was clear and specific, and listening to him talking was something else. He was confidently telling the others how he achieved his goal. Greg had mastered TAPE 2 of the Fundamentals thinking in pictures, TAPE 3, using his conscious mind and his senses (to set his goal, he even showed us how he felt it), he used TAPE 4 when he threw his goal into his subconscious mind, and TAPE 6, Greg was able to review exactly what he had done, inspiring others on this call. No wonder these kids caught my attention. There's nothing like hearing how young people, from countries around the world, were helping each other to create exciting lives. If you look at the date on the cassette tape, it was just months before September 11th, 2001, and the program would dissolve before SERIES 4, 5 and 6 were even created, but I hope that sharing these ideas with you, will help someone, somewhere in the world, to implement these ideas in your own life. So for today's episode, #294, we will cover TAPE 5 and dive into “Going Beyond Our 5 Senses: Understanding and Using the 6 Faculties of Our Mind.”   We will cover: ✔What are the 6 Faculties of the Mind, and How Do They Relate to Going Beyond Our 5 Senses? ✔Where Napoleon Hill talks about these 6 Faculties in his best-selling Think and Grow Rich Book. ✔Where neuroscience fits into our understanding of these Faculties, to help us to understand our inside world, and how physicist Albert Einstein used these faculties. ✔A starting point for all of us to DEVELOP and PRACTICE using our own 6 Faculties of the Mind, giving us an edge as we are working on our 2023 goals. If I were to ask you, can you name the higher faculties in your mind, I'm pretty sure that maybe on 2/100 could list them off. This is something else that blows my mind, as I clearly remember being taught all about our 5 senses in school, tasting salt and sugar, and writing about these senses, what we can see, hear, smell, taste and touch, that allow us to make sense of our outside world. But what about our inside world? If we can learn to understand, fully develop and then use our higher faculties, we will experience life at higher levels, than just living through the 5 senses alone, that we saw on our last episode #293[i] with David Eagleman's work, there's much more than our human eyes can see. Napoleon Hill talks about these higher faculties in chapter 5 of his best-selling book, Think and Grow Rich when he says: Just as we have 5 senses that help us to experience the outside world, we also have non-physical, creative faculties that help us to experience our inner world. When I first learned about these faculties, I got really excited. Look how Napoleon Hill describes our imagination. He says: When you start to use your imagination, like Greg did with his golf game, changing your results, and entire future, with this skill, I can't imagine that you wouldn't get as excited as I do, and wonder how you can use this “marvelous, inconceivably powerful force” in YOUR life. When I started to see that science could explain some of these ideas that might seem kind of spiritual in nature, or my friend Greg Link[ii], who worked with Dr. Stephen Covey  would say “woo woo” it just helped me to have more confidence as I continue to develop and use these faculties. They started to become my superpower, and what's interesting that I was reminded of when I listened to those teens talking about how they used these faculties to improve their relationships, get better grades, or like Greg's story, where he used these ideas to improve his results in sports that helped get him into the College he wanted to attend, we ALL have the ability to use, and develop these faculties for outstanding results, or a razor's edge advantage in our own lives. Before diving into our 6 Higher Faculties (Our Reason, Intuition, Perception, Our Will, Memory and Imagination” let's see what science has to say about our higher faculties. What Does the Research Say About Our Higher Faculties? We know that many visionaries have used their intuition and dreams to create life-changing ideas, but Albert Einstein would say something profound about one of these faculties. He said “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” I know that Stanford Professor Dr. Andrew Huberman has covered what happens in the brain during visualization on his podcast on “How to Learn Skills Faster”[iii] and he talks about 3 components of learning any new skill: Sensory Perception: Where you are perceiving what you are doing using your 5 senses. Movement: That involves our CPGS (central pattern generators) located in our spinal cord and generates repetitive movements like walking, and running etc. When we are really good at something, this part of the brain controls our movement. Proprioception: That he says is like a 6th sense, or knowing where your limbs are in relation to our body. I'm always looking to see if the research could possibly support the results I've seen working over and over again over the years, and while Dr. Huberman goes deep into the way our brain works while acquiring a new skill, and what part of the brain is active when we become really good at a new skill, to me, he also explains that when learning a new skill, we can use our 5 senses, and our outside world, (called sensory perception) and that we can also look outside of ourselves, with what he called proprioception. He also explains what part of the brain becomes active with visualization, and I think the key is that with practice, we move from using our upper motor neurons in our brain to a whole new area he called the Central Pattern Generators, when the skill becomes highly developed. I thought about Greg talking about his golf swing that he practiced using visualization, until he had mastered the skill enough to take his results to new heights, going from last place to 3rd from the top. Over time, he began using a different part of his brain for playing golf. This practice he was doing, would change his future, and put him in the College of his choice. I wish I had kept in touch with all of the teens from this program, I only follow the original 12, but I would bet that Greg continued to use this skill for the rest of his life for improved results in College and into his career. Then I looked at another episode that Dr. Huberman did with Rick Ruben, an American record executive, on “How to Access Creativity”[iv] and I did cover some of Dr. Huberman's research on PART 4 of The Silva Method[v], but I thought it was fitting that Rick Rubin, while discussing the creative process with Dr. Huberman, says that It's important to “pay attention to physical sensations in your body in your creative pursuits.”   And neuroscientist Antonio Damasio actually coined this term to be called “interoception.”   So, I know I'm not too far off from what the research says as we cover the 6 Faculties of our Mind, and how to develop them for a razor's edge advantage. REASON: We talked about our ability to think, and reason on our last episode #293[vi] which is a skill that can help us to understand things on a deeper level. We have the incredible ability to THINK, and then we can decide if we like an idea, and accept it, or we can reject an idea. We use this ability to put our thoughts together, and create ideas. HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FACULTY: Have you ever participated in brainstorming sessions or Think Tanks with others? Mastermind sessions like this allows each person to use this faculty. You write down ideas on idea maps, and discuss the pros and cons of whatever ideas are thrown out. Meetings like this are highly creative, and new advancements in business often begin this way, when two or more minds get together, and the thinking/reasoning faculty is exercised. INTUITION: This faculty I could spend a year talking about. This is where we learn how to read the energy we feel around us. We can all do this—pick up the “vibe” of another person, just by feeling their energy. Remember Anotnio Damasio called this Interoception, or learning to listen to what we feel from within our body. With practice, we can learn to trust what we feel and become confident with using this tool. HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FACULTY: The best way I have seen is to ask for feedback when you think and feel something about someone. When you can see you are on the right track, you'll gain confidence with this skill, and keep learning to use it. PERCEPTION: David Eagleman talks about this faculty in his book, The Brain, and wow, can his work really bend your mind. Just search for the word “perception” in his book, and you'll see 26 times that he gives an example of how our brain tricks us in many different ways, and “our brains constantly pull information from the environment and use it to steer our behavior” (Page 86, The Brain) and reminds us of Freuds work that our mind works like an iceberg, “the majority of it is hidden from our awareness.” (Page 86, The Brain). With this in mind, when we perceive something, remember we are seeing it from our point of view, with our senses that we know are limited. HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FACULTY: Try seeing things from someone else's point of view, and see if this changes your perception of a situation. We did talk about this strategy in depth on a recent interview #289[vii] with Dr. Maiysha Clairborne who reminded us to look at situations from 3 points of view. Our own, from the other person's shoes, and then look at the entire situation as if you were looking at all points of view from above. This will help you to see that your point of view, isn't the only possible route, and will help to develop and improve empathy with this practice. YOUR WILL: This is another of my favorite faculties. This one gives you the ability to concentrate. While sitting down to write this episode, I've gotten up from my desk a few times, but I'm determined to finish writing this, so I can record and release this today. That's the will at work. You can also use the will to hold a thought on the screen of your mind, or choose thoughts of success, over thoughts of failure. If you have a highly evolved will, you'll lock into doing something, block out all distractions, and accomplish what you set out to do. HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FACULTY: Developing the will takes practice. Meditation can strengthen your will, but so can staring at a candle flame until you and the flame become one. I tried this activity in my late 20s, and remember it was a few hours of staring at this candle flame, before I was able to block out the distractions of the outside world, and the flame extended towards me.  This faculty, like the others, takes time and practice, but once you've developed this faculty, you'll know you have the ability to sit, focus, and do anything. MEMORY: We've covered memory on many episodes, but my favorite was with Chris Farrow, who is a two-time Guiness World Record Holder for most decks of playing cards memorized, from EP #149.[viii] This is another faculty that requires practice, and most of us don't practice this skill. A highly developed memory can be valuable in all types of work, and most people who have a highly developed memory share they use certain strategies to remember things, usually by association, and even by ridiculous association, to really make memories stick. HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FACULTY: Chris Farrow had memory programs through his website www.FarrowMemory.com and when I was listening to those old youht mentoring tapes, Bob suggested a memory program through Nightingale Conant[ix].  Whatever method you use to improve your memory, it begins with a system or strategy. Names are sometimes difficult for me, especially on the hiking trails, when I meet someone I see often. I try to associate the person's name with someone I know already, who they might remind me of, to make their name stick. IMAGINATION: I've saved my favorite faculty to cover last. This faculty, when developed, gives you incredible creative power. Remember that Napoleon Hill said it to be “the most marvelous, miraculous, inconceivably powerful force the world has ever known” and Albert Einstein said imagination is “more important than knowledge.” This is where the power comes in, and honestly, if I hadn't have seen all the people, who over the years, used their imagination faculty to create what many would say to be impossible, and then go out and accomplish exactly what they had imagined, I'm not sure I'd believe it all myself.   HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FACULTY: This is what the Think and Grow Rich[x] book study was all about, as well as learning to visualize with The Silva Method. The important thing to note here is that you must be careful what you wish for. Remember Greg, with the teens, he wished to be the 3rd best on his team, and that's exactly what he achieved. Why not go for the top, if I swear to you, I believe it to be possible? Here's how I did this recently. At the start of 2023, when setting my goals, I put them all in written form, and made sure they stretched me. Remember, if you listened to the interview with Brian Proctor, if your goal doesn't stretch you, there won't be any inspiration in it. The end of January, I was starting a new corporate position, going back to sales, and working for someone else, something I hadn't done in 10 years. Selling my own programs into schools, there was pressure, but if I didn't make a sale, I didn't have a sales manager asking me to explain my pipeline. It was a new experience, and I wrote down that I wanted to be a LEADER in sales, in my division. Then the work began. I would read that goal out loud every morning, and many mornings, it felt weird, especially when I saw I was LAST on my team. But like Greg proved, even someone who is last, can do things a certain way, and become FIRST. It took me 6 months, and a series of sales has now led me to be the leader of my division. I honestly didn't believe it to be possible until maybe the 4th or 5th month. It began when I took my imagination, and just started to dream. That was just one of the goals I wrote down at the start of the year. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get exactly what you dreamed of. There's no limits to our creative ability and I've just proved it. I always believed this to be possible, especially for others, but doing something yourself, gives you an incredible amount of belief. I hope whatever it is that YOU want, that you've imagined on the screen of your mind, that you GET IT, and then I hope that you'll show others the way forward. All great inventions are created in two places: the mind of the inventor, and then in the world, when they create their vision. REVIEW AND CONCLUSION: To review and conclude this lesson, I hope that you'll go back and review EPISODE 291[xi] on “Unleashing the Power of Our Subconscious Mind” then EPISODE #293 on “Our Conscious Mind and Five Senses” which will prepare you for this final episode on “Going Beyond Our 5 Senses: Understanding and Using the 6 Faculties of Our Mind.”   Reminder, today we covered: ✔What are the 6 Faculties of the Mind, and How Do They Relate to Going Beyond Our 5 Senses? (The 5 senses help us to see the outside world, and our 6 Faculties help us to strengthen our inner world).   ✔Where Napoleon Hill talks about these 6 Faculties in his best-selling Think and Grow Rich Book.   ✔Where neuroscience fits into our understanding of these Faculties, to help us to understand our inside world, and how physicist Albert Einstein used these faculties (he said that imagination was more important than knowledge)!   ✔A starting point for all of us to DEVELOP and PRACTICE using our own 6 Faculties of the Mind, giving us an edge as we are working on our 2023 goals.   I hope you have found the past few episodes to be helpful for using your mind to think, and create the goals that you'd like for yourself (and others) in 2023 and beyond. I've included a link to worksheets that I created for students on these 6 faculties in he resource section of the show notes. These are old lessons, but like I said with the cassette tapes, the content is still applicable over 20 years later. Feel free to download these lessons and use them as you would like. Coming up next: We have Mike Bordick, who had a 14 year MLB career and is now looking at neuroscience and youth! Futurist and Behavioral Scientist Chris Marshall who will prepare us for the uncertainty of tomorrow. On episode 36 of The Circling Podcast, I have the privilege of sitting down with long time Central Oregonians, Lev and Kirin Stryker, owners and operators of Cog Wild bicycle tours and Shuttles. Lev and Kirin share their story of how they landed in Bend back in the 90's, and the many life steppingstones that have led them to where they are today. Currently operating out of the LOGE, formally the Entrada Lodge, off of Century Drive, Kirin, Lev, and the rest of the Cog Wild team provide daily guided rides, skills instruction, and regular shuttles to the popular trial-heads around Bend and Oakridge, as well as guided multi-day MTB adventures on the backcountry trails throughout Oregon.  In addition to professional mountain bike instruction and guiding, Cog Wild provides opportunity to learn about the rich natural and cultural history of Central Oregon while strongly promoting, encouraging, and regularly participating in trail and land stewardship.  Kirin, Lev, Thank you for intention that you put into how you run Cog Wild. To borrow an idea from Rick Ruben, Though a business may have a number of goals and motivations, there is only one intention. This is the grand gesture of the brand.  After talking with you and so many others,  I could make a good argument that your grand gesture is inspired by stewardship. Stewardship for the trails that we use and the land on which they are built. And Stewardship for the community by providing a fun, safe, educational, and inclusive experience for those  both new and old to Central Oregon and for those both new and old to the wonderful sport of cycling.   Thanks for listening to The Circling Podcast. Two words for this week; Rick Ruben. As I sit here and type this, we celebrate our 4 year anniversary! None of us knew anything about recording. We knew nothing about audio, video, or anything to do with editing them.  We really had no business starting a podcast at all. But we did! And here we are, exactly 4 years later. Better gear, still no idea what we're doing. All this is to say thank you! I truly never though anyone would listen. This is Crue Cast, a podcast about the most infamous band in rock history, Motley Crue hosted by Jason LaChance. This episode I talk with fellow Crue Head and Motley Crue stage clothing designer Tod Junker. Tod and I dig into not only how he came to design stage clothing for the different members of Motley Crue, including the current clothing Vince Neil is wearing on the stadium tour but how his career began with a chance meeting. We also talk about his career as a musician including stories of famed producer Rick Ruben and finding sobriety. He's also designed stage clothing for Steven Tyler, and nameless other performing artists. Junker Designs est. 2001 started with stuff Tod dived outta dumpsters, everything is made with grubby little paws. Tod has mutated, overdyed, rusted, painted, buried, or bled on every piece. The clothes are all one of a kind, made from denim, leather, whatever he can find in the dirty streets of Los Angeles. Wear It Hard. Wear It Loud. Tod was born at St Vincents in Manhattan and grew up in Houston, Texas on a steady diet of Ultraman, horror movies, war films, and Star Wars. Tod spent a lot of time drawing and exploring the creek by his house. At around the age of 8, he started getting in trouble in school for drawing on all his papers and desk. In high school Tod was getting into trouble for wearing biker boots and painting on his clothes, so he quit and started playing in punk rock bands. During that time, Tod started sewing more and putting the legs of jeans on his jackets for arms, drawing, hand painting, silk-screening, and dying all his clothes. Tod continued to mutilate clothes when he moved to LA in 2000. He started to experiment with aging processes, and patternmaking. He made a vest at a friend's house, which found its way to Lenny Kravitz who bought it, and that's how it all started. What about when it must be done? Then you absolutely have to do it. No matter what. I'm on a coaching call and say, "You can do whatever you want." This executive is weighing options in search of the best one. We hash out the pros and cons of the obvious choices before moving on to the not-so-obvious choices. As I am wont to do, I challenge my client to consider any and every option. Even the ones we tend to think we can't possibly pick. I specialize in bold mistakes.  -Paul McCartney I was watching that new documentary with Rick Ruben, famed record producer, and Paul McCartney. In one of their conversations, Paul uttered that quote. McCartney was often criticized for writing pop, upbeat little love songs while some viewed John Lennon as the more serious songwriter. Paul explains that his viewpoint originated from his good childhood. A childhood he assumed everybody experienced. Paul was, and remains, highly optimistic. Judge him by the songs he authored. "Here Comes The Sun," is a perfect example. I watch one of the two remaining Beatles now in his late 70s and he's got a boyish look to him. Even now. The music of his youth - the Beatles broke up in April 1970. Paul was only 29. The Beatles had been together for 8 years. Here he is listening to Beatles' tracks with Rick Ruben. They're dissecting some, commenting along the way as Paul reminisces of recordings made over 50 years ago. His enthusiasm for the songs and those times is evident in his eyes. John Lennon was a very different man. A different songwriter. A different person who grew up quite differently from Paul. And as a result, John didn't share Paul's optimism. His songs reflect the differences. Paul confesses that he just assumed everybody grew up as he did, but John showed him that wasn't true. Stories like that are important to this conversation because the real point of it all is "possibility." Not probability. Not likelihood. Not even practicality. Which is why I love the sentiment about a 4-year-old in a Batman cape. Kids often do, or dream of doing, what can't be done. We did it when we were kids. All the time. We built forts we never thought we could. Treehouses, too. We imagined we were all kinds of characters, living in completely made-up places. Or real places. We dreamed of becoming all sorts of things...like writers or cartoonists. ;) I didn't really become either one, but my whole life has been influenced by those early dreams. Friends dreamed of becoming attorneys, veterinarians, doctors, teachers, nurses, or auto mechanics. Did any of them make it? Most likely found something else. Or like me, stumbled into something else. Today, I'm preoccupied with two narratives. The victim. Or the hero. Which will you be? Which role are you playing right now?

[BRAD's PICK] Hip Hop super-duo Run the Jewels are no strangers to defying conventions in the music industry. Killer Mike had been putting out politically conscious rap in Atlanta for a little over a decade, befriending Big Boi and guesting on a few Outkast tracks, and even one for Jay-Z. All of this and his various random appearances on Adult Swim show that Killer Mike was always a climbing star, but in his mid-30s he met someone that was also on his way to the top. El-P, also in his mid-30s, had made a name for himself in the underground hip hop scene by not giving a fuck and putting out well produced music. Hailing from Brooklyn, he helped launch Aesop Rock's career with his record label, Definitive Jux, continuing to put out great hip hop, such as Mr. Lif & Cage until it went on hiatus in 2010. However, in 2011, the stars aligned and Killer Mike and El P were introduced (famously by Adult Swim's Jason DeMarco) and they collaborated for the first time to create Killer Mike's epic album "R.A.P. Music" in 2012. And then, for some reason, these two men at the top of their careers decide to do something crazy... They combine forces and create Run The Jewels, gaining more commercial success in the last 7 years than either of them probably imagined it would. With RTJ4 on the horizon, being produced by the legendary Rick Ruben, I thought it might be nice to revisit the inception of the whole Run the Jewels concept, and the first album does just that. On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with renowned photographer Glen E. Friedman.  To take a look through some of Friedman's archive is like stepping back into time and getting the chance to live through the subcultures he was there to bare witness to.  He created images that would help define a generation.  From the Dogtown Days of skateboarding with Tony Alva and Jay Adams, to the raw energy of punk with Black Flag and Minor Threat, to the early days of hip hop with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, Friedman was there with a camera in hand.  The list of recognizable names and artists that he helped visually introduce to the world goes on and on and stands as a testament to his own taste in what he thought was important to photograph.  From a very early age, Glen E. Friedman was attracted to photography and began to realize that some of the people that were shooting the culture he was a part of didn't seem to know how to approach it.  By the age of 15 he was getting published in Skateboarder magazine, and a few years later he was shooting the punk bands that had begun to become the soundtrack of his own rebellious attitude.  After venturing into a new endeavor of managing and producing an album for Suicidal Tendencies, Friedman started to get turned on to some of the new sounds of hip hop coming out of New York.  It wasn't long before he became friends with Rick Ruben and Russell Simmons and started shooting some of the iconic album covers that those of us that lived through the 80s and early 90s will definitely remember.  Through it all, Friedman always stayed passionate about photography, and tried to only shoot the things that he was moved by.  During our conversation we get the chance to ask Friedman what he thinks the next youth movement will be, what it's like to work with some of the biggest names in music, and the advice he gives to others about following their passion.  So enjoy our conversation with Glen E. Friedman.   To Learn More About Glen E.
