Hardcore isn't a new thing in Indonesia, it has been around for a few decades. UK and US imports in the 90s saw wealthy individuals buy records and introduce metal and hardcore locally. Bands from back in the day, such as Banana Split who sought to replicate Biohazard, or influential local bands like Martyr helped propel the alternative genres. In 2023, videos shared in Instagram by Pat Flynn brought 061 Hardfest to my attention. With only two months of preparation, a group of individuals in Medan, Indonesia put on a sold-out fest for 500 people, featuring bands from South East Asia. With its coverage across social media, the people in the 061 scene have made a statement that the hardcore world needs to pay attention to Medan.  Joined by Anes (Bass in Trap, Pollution, and guitar in Suspek, IG: @totaldamage_) and Sen (Drummer of Repulsed and co-director and editor of SHORTxFUSE on YouTube, IG: @rifqixhussein) we are talking Medan, the 061, Indonesia HC.  There is nothing more that needs to be said other than this is an episode you need to listen to.  Tracks played: 1.     Pleazure and Pain – “Juvenile Reaction” (Spotify, Instagram: @pleazure.ap)2.     No One Cares – “Resist” (Spotify, Instagram: @noonecares061)3.     Caveman – “Worthless Night” (Bandcamp)4.     Peach – “Caged” (Bandcamp, Instagram: @peachoftoday)5.     As We Stand – “Indesign” (Bandcamp, Instagram: @aswestanddd)6.     Fingerprint – “Dongan Sahuta” (Spotify, Instagram: @fingerprinthc)7.     Suspek – “Amphibi” (Bandcamp)8.     RADSS – “Lay Down” (Bandcamp, Instagram: @radss.its.us)

Carter Holmes joins the show to talk a plethora of topics on FWR. In one of my favourite conversations, I have had on this show, Carter talks to us about carrying the torch after Plead Your Case called it a day, forming ties with Streets of Hate, Triple B and Northern Unrest, the stresses and accomplishments of the One Scene Unity Comps, and how to convince TikTok kids to come to more than just one show. Tracks Played:1. Also, I dunno why I thought Killing Me had come out recently, it came out in July 2022.

A couple weeks ago we had Adam from Convulse on the show. Adam was the first label guy I ever reached out to and he put a lot of trust in me and Northern Scene. As Northern Scene grew, labels began looking for an outlet in Canada. Enter the most polite email I have received in this business from Vlad. Vlad, who runs DGR out of Cleveland, needed someone to handle the Slug 12" in Canada as there had been requests. Being somewhat familiar with the label, and knowing a couple of the bands pretty well, I  had a good indication of what to expect from everything DGR. We had some conversations as to how Northern Scene could take the available catalogue and get it in front of people, in a market that is likely not incredibly familiar with Ohio HC or one that is willing to buy cassettes on mail order. One thing led to another, and we now have a wide variety of titles from DGR and I just needed Vlad to join the show. Featuring close to  20 bands, the shows in Calgary are headlined by I Am, Strife, Sunami and Scowl. Jessa and I discuss how the festival came to be, the state of hardcore across Western Canada, the scenes from where some of the bands are travelling from, and a song from eight of the bands playing on August 26 and 27 at the SCA Community Association. Songs played:1. Kharma - "12"2. Cohezion - "Final Wish (ft. Brendan Murphy)3. Ballista - "Territory" 4. Change - "Reason"5. Meantime - "Search"6. Gates To Hell - "Hell's Warrior"7. Strife - "Blistered" 8. These songs are all awesome, but to enjoy them in a physical format you need a way to play cassettes, because they are only available on cassette (well mostly, a couple of them were pressed to vinyl but they are sold out). Everything here is from a newish band that has limited releases under their belt, so now is a great episode to discover new music. Lots of stellar hardcore adjacent, melodic hardcore and straight edge HC in this one. Tracks played:1. Field of Flames - "Burn Your World"2. Squint - "Dealer Wins"3. Cape Fade - "Lose My Head"4. Next weekend is Sound and Fury, so we are getting ready by bringing on Ryan Savitski, vocalist for One Step Closer and guitarist for Anxious. Ryan will be playing the Superheaven pre-show with Anxious on Friday, the main fest with Anxious on Saturday, and with One Step Closer on Sunday. Ryan picked eight songs from eight of the bands playing Sound and Fury, and this was one of my favourite times hanging out with someone on Zoom listening to hardcore. A playlist that reflects my current Spotify history, these are all bands that I, among many others, are incredibly excited to see. We have a ton of these titles in stock so go grab some and don't be jealous you are not in Los Angeles, you can always come next year! 1.     Speed – “Not That Nice”2.     Fiddlehead - "Loverman"3.     Koyo - "Moriches"4.     Magnitude - "Plea"5.     Gulch - "Self-Inflicted Mental Terror"6.     Soul Blind - "Phantom Pool"7.     No Pressure - "Big Man"8.     Drain - "California Cursed" Couple notes – I said Anxious and One Step Closer are playing on the same day, they are not. I also am aware I mispronounced Superheaven.
