Chicago brewing legend Wil Turner shares his craft beer journey through breweries of all sizes, from California to Europe. Wil has significantly contributed to the Chicago craft beer scene at multiple breweries and served on the board of the Illinois Craft Beer Association. 02:54 Beer Myth: Is draft beer always better than packaged beer, whether it's in a can or a bottle? Katherine and Wil discuss the nuances of draft versus packaged beer freshness, the impact of proper handling, and their own personal experiences drinking their own beers on tap at different brewpubs. 09:20 Wil Turner's Brewing Journey:. Wil walks through his craft beer journey, including his early experiences in Europe, California, and Michigan, and the creative progression from traditional styles to the innovative approaches that define today's craft beer culture. He discusses the transition from owning a brewing company to working for others, the lessons learned from financial losses in the business, and the balance between production brewing and the creative process of developing new beers. He also explores the importance of artistic freedom, the quest to brew the perfect beer, and the ongoing process of tweaking recipes to achieve excellence. 52:28 This Week in Bad Customer Behavior: Katherine thinks that changes in craft beer consumerism is making life harder for brewers in general — and Brian disagrees. They discuss the evolution of local breweries and how they've become multi-faceted entertainment hubs, hosting events like trivia nights, music bingo, and even pottery classes to attract a wider audience. And that leads to a hilarious conversation about how breweries are adapting to changing consumer trends, the role of gimmicks in the industry, and a plea to preserve the authentic craft beer experience. Check out our updated craft beer merchandise store and learn more about Crafty Brewers on our official website, https://craftybrewerspod.com About Wil Turner: Wil Turner began his professional brewing career in 1992 at Seabright Brewery in Santa Cruz after a number of years of homebrewing and working in beer retail in Michigan and California. He moved to Chicago in 2002 to brew for Goose Island and later brewed for Revolution and Open Outcry, and has also served multiple terms on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild. We invited Greg to have a conversation about COVID-19 because of his very academic view of how our financial decisions are made in the real world. We found his insights to be invaluable as we discussed the importance of using NOW as the time to build resistance for the next crisis – it’s only a matter of time. We discussed how to use Odysseus contracts to ensure we make decisions in a “cold” state that will bind us to behaviors in “hot” states. And one of the more provocative comments, especially coming from a financial guy, was how our world would benefit from giving the “fetish of optimization.” You’ll want to check it out. © 2020 Behavioral Grooves Links Connect with Kurt and Tim: Kurt Nelson, PhD: @WhatMotivates e-mail: kurt@lanterngroup.com Tim Houlihan: @THoulihan e-mail: tim@behavioralchemy.com Lantern Group: http://lanterngroup.com/ BehaviorAlchemy: https://www.behavioralchemy.com/ Behavioral Grooves: https://behavioralgrooves.com/ Weekly Grooves: https://weeklygrooves.podbean.com/ Common Biases & Heuristics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHpBr0VFcaT8wIUpr-9zMIb79dFMgOVFRxIZRybiftI/edit# Patreon Site for Behavioral Grooves: https://www.patreon.com/behavioralgrooves General Coronavirus Info: Daily Newsletter Summarizing data from Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security: http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/newsroom/newsletters/e-newsletter-sign-up.html CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html Great videos on the science behind this by Dr. Peter Attia – this is the first in a series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNVhLyAlfA4 What is herd immunity?: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/615375/what-is-herd-immunity-and-can-it-stop-the-coronavirus/ A list curated by Liam.Delaney@UCD.ie https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GLhX7hLf64Bxkdpv5hvYHqOjS1imlcMQFjJBJ-9oUM/edit Coronavirus & Behavioral Science: Selected Links: The Behavioral Sice of Coronavirus: https://behavioralscientist.org/selected-links-the-behavioral-science-of-the-coronavirus-covid-19/ Why no one is reading your coronavirus email: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/13/opinions/coronavirus-emails-effective-messaging-rogers/index.html Handwashing can stop a virus, so why don’t we do it?: https://behavioralscientist.org/handwashing-can-stop-a-virus-so-why-dont-we-do-it-coronavirus-covid-19/ The behavioral science of handwashing: https://think.ing.com/articles/the-behavioural-science-of-hand-washing/ Ideas 42: The Behavioral Side of COVID-19 here: https://ideas42.org/covid19/ Greater Good: https://twitter.com/GreaterGoodSC How We Can Cope During This Crisis: Tip Sheet from HUMU: https://humu.com/remote-nudges/ Resources for learning at home: https://fordhaminstitute.org/national/commentary/resources-learning-home-during-covid-19-school-closures?utm_source=join1440&utm_medium=email&utm_placement=etcetera General Behavioral Science Links: Common Biases and Heuristics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHpBr0VFcaT8wIUpr-9zMIb79dFMgOVFRxIZRybiftI/edit# Jonathan Haidt – 5 Moral Foundations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory Annie Duke’s “How To Decide”: https://www.amazon.com/How-Decide-Simple-Making-Choices/dp/0593084608 “16 Ways To Promote Hand Washing With Behavioral Science” article by Aline Holzwarth: https://www.forbes.com/sites/alineholzwarth/2020/03/25/handwashing-with-behavioral-science/#261b4b9f768d Aline Holzwarth’s Playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0H5fsQRrqslGdBhhx8d4Aw?si=0jra0rU1Qu2vQNtqjbRvZA Deontological and Consequential Moralities: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ethics-deontological/#DeoTheKan Difference between descriptive and injunctive norms: https://psychology.stackexchange.com/questions/6193/whats-the-difference-between-injunctive-norms-and-descriptive-norms Emotion Research from FinalMile: http://finalmile.in/research/ Pandemic Playbook from FinalMile: https://www.playbookforpandemic.com/

This is the story of open outcry trading, electronic trading and an imaginary secret organization I created to tell the story of both. This was the first time I used SPET, or the Society for the Promotion of Electronic Trading, to tell a story.
It's April, fools! Spring has sprung! During 'What's Hoppin?' we learn about District Brew Yards and the Dixie Highway Brewery Trail. Now sit back and drink it all in. CHEERS!
My friend John Brand makes his 3rd appearance on the show, this time showcasing a new brewer at the southside brewpub, Wil Turner. A man who has been in the game as long as anyone in Chicago, making great beers and moving it forward while paying homage to the classic styles. We had a fun conversation over some cheese curds, Wil's homemade beef jerky, and some tasty beers. Gotta love that southside baby! Social Media: Website Facebook Instagram
In our most ambitious episode to date we host remote broadcasts from a Chicago Bears tailgate, a notorious UFC viewing party, and Wine Riot Chicago. Well, we tried something new. I gathered up 3 owners/brewers from different breweries in a region and had them talk a little beer with me. Hosted and set up by my guy John Brand at Open Outcry, we were joined by Mark Kocol of One Trick Pony in Lansing, IL, and Matt Johnson, brewer at Horse Thief Hollow, just a little ways north of Open Outcry on Western Ave in the Beverly neighborhood. We got down to the bottom of a lot of things, including, glasses, cans, crowlers, and growlers. It was great to hear from each of them on the past, present, and future of Southside Chicago beer. They have a lot to offer in that part of the city suburbs, both on and off trends. Be sure to follow all of them on Social Media: Open Outcry Brewing Co.
