Matt Likes Beer – Week 15 – PVD Pils

In Episode 15 of Matt Likes Beer, Matt samples PVD Pils, an Italian Pilsner from Long Live Beer Works in Providence, Rhode Island. While there wasn't much information to be found on the beer itself, Matt makes the most of it—digging into the brewery, the elusive Italian Pilsner style, and his love-hate relationship with beer rating standards. Matt shares insights on: The unique, dry-hopped character of Italian Pilsners and their unexpected origin story. His thoughts on Long Live Beer Works' dual locations in Providence and Boston, and their mission to never brew a flagship beer. The pros, cons, and addictive temptation of beer delivery app Tavour, which introduced him to this beer in the first place. Matt evaluates PVD Pils as a German Pilsner + dry hopping under BJCP's 34B "mixed-style" category, scoring it a strong 41 out of 50. He praises its crisp balance and soft bitterness, though wishes the dry hopping came through a bit more boldly. With no one-star reviews available, this episode skips that segment—but not before delivering a full pour of beer nerd insight, judging challenges, and personal anecdotes. Listen now at Neozaz.com, BigMonsterBrewing.com, or wherever you get your podcasts. If you're curious about Italian Pilsners or want a crash course in evaluating mixed-style beers, this episode's got you covered.

The boys drink and review Bitburger, a German Pilsner, then discuss Crowhill's book about Jordan Peterson's religious views, and what we can piece together of his religious journey. Jordan Peterson is a Canadian clinical psychologist who broke onto the public scene after Canada decided to tell people how they can and can't speak. He wasn't having any part of it. Part of Peterson's mystique is his very public struggle with religious questions. His recent book, "We Who Wrestle With God" is his latest foray into the topic, mixing evolutionary biology, Jungian archetypes, the Bible, and timeless religious and moral questions. It's full of interesting insights, but it's a bit of a jumbled mess. Crowhill makes an attempt to systematize and organize Peterson's thoughts into a coherent system. Pint Talking with The Brewer of Seville

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2023 42:18

This week Bob and I wrap up our lager kick for now as we discuss the German Pilsner. Quite possibly the most iconic beer style in modern history, the pilsner captured the attention of beer drinkers across the world and inspired a myriad of regional imitations. This lightly colored, exquisitely balanced lager remains one of the most loved beers to enjoy, and one of the most challenging for the brewer to create. Pilsner is characteristically light in color and have a very short finish. The world over, pilsner -style lagers have become the standard beer for many reasons, and American craft brewers have worked hard to put their own unique spin on this classic German beer. A classic German-style pilsner is straw to pale in color with a malty sweetness that can be perceived in aroma and flavor. Perception of hop bitterness is medium to high. Noble-type hop aroma and flavor are moderate and quite obvious. Distinctly different from the Bohemian-style pilsner, this style is lighter in color and body and has a lower perceived hop bitterness. ABV: 4.4 – 5.2% IBUs: 22-40 Color: 2-4 Serving Temp: For most lagers and pilsners, 38 degrees is ideally your low point. Anywhere up to the low-to-mid 40s is fair game. “[Pilsners] are more traditionally [served at] 38 degrees, and are probably best suited there. For Alma Mader Brewing, combining lager brewing with a broad approach to hazy IPA provides the best of both worlds—a dogmatic approach to technical brewing measured against a ranging program to squeeze every ounce of classic and creative flavor from their hops. Founder and head brewer Nick Mader studied and worked with industry leading breweries before heading back home to Kansas City, Missouri to open the eponymously named brewery, and that studied, nuanced approach to beer design is evident no matter which style you order. In this episode, Mader first discusses lager, including: Quality, consistency, and expression in Saaz hops Dialing in utilization of Noble hops in lagers Utilizing later hop additions in lager Balancing bitterness and malt character Manipulating pH to achieve proper expression Keeping minerality in check The significant differences in different lager yeasts Then, the discussion turns to hazy IPA, and Mader covers: Their two-pronged approach to hazy IPA with more dry and more sweet veins Boil additions in hazy IPA for hop flavor in the mid palate The impact of specific hop varieties on expression of “juicy” The benefit of using gypsum A west coast approach to hazy IPA Cool pooling for better hop aroma and more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Like your flagship beer you can rely on G&D Chillers for the same quality and consistency. “What Are We Drinking About”, w/ Erik & Jodi Dingus Day Episode 04/08/2021 For today's show, we're celebrating that Polish Holiday- Dyngus Day! We're doing a Dingus Day episode! Celebrating that holiday and all that is polish in beer! Cheers With that being said we're I've selected a selection of local and international Polish-styled beers!   Tonight's selection:   Zywiec- Polish Pils: ABV 5.6 | IBUS 30 Taste is very much the same - sweet but naturally so, nice malty taste, no artificial flavors. Little hops but that's actually a benefit as it lets the malty sweetness shine.   Flying Bison Bison- Polonia Pils: ABV 4.8 | IBUs 30 Crisp Pilsner brewed with German Pilsner malt as well as Saaz, Hallertau and Lublin hops. Na zdrowie!     Grolsch – Pislner: ABV 5.0% | IBUS 28 A traditional Polish styled Pilsner style beer with a big hoppy flavor and bite owing to dry hopping late in the brewing process. The zesty and fragrant hops make for a refreshingly dry finish and a slight sweet and sharp zing to the palate, which are best enjoyed with rich, creamy foods like pork sausage and mustard mash, quality fish and chips or cheese like Old Amsterdam, Edam or Brie. Grolsch is known to use a distinctively shaped bottle for its beer, known as de beugel or 'swingtop'   Zywiec- 1881 Porter: ABV 9.5% | IBU N/A Zywiec Porter pours mahogany to black, letting no light in, with a thin tan head. The aroma is malty with a little molasses and a faint undertone of coffee that's nearly indistinguishable. It's a different tasting porter than most, especially when it's cold. At first it seems crisp, with a faint lagery yeast that's mostly masked by roasty malt. If you let it warm, it really opens up into a malty smooth porter with balanced molasses and dark roasty tones that play nicely on your tongue. It sits pretty heavy in your mouth and when warmer, you can get a boozy bite on the finish that's pretty pleasant. At 9.5%, it's nothing to scoff at, but the alcohol is hidden well especially when it's cold. If you're into porters, try this one out for the uniqueness of it, as they've been brewing this one from the same recipe since 1881.

Decoction is a age-old technique for achieving better extraction and hitting the mashing rest temperatures with less modified malts, but how much difference does it make in the beer flavor. Fans of decoction swear that it adds that little something extra you just can’t get from infusion mashing. Season 1, Episode 1 - Anchorage Brewing’s Rondy Brew Saison w/Lemongrass and Brett kicks off the inaugural episode of Four Brewers. Welcome to Four Brewers! Four Brewers is a new podcast from Matt Becker, John Holzer,Jason Harris, and Greg Nagel that celebrates craft beer and homebrewing.  This week on the show, we’re celebrating our collective return to the interwebs, and welcoming our newest member, Greg, to the show by opening some really special brews: A saison from Anchorage Brewing Company called “Rondy Brew,” and a wonderful sour from The Lost Abbey called “Veritas 007.” As with all new ventures, we’re working out the bugs of doing a new show (bugs, beer, title of the episode, get it ?…heh), and getting a feel for the overall flow. Episode one beers. Anchorage Rondy Brew, The Lost Abbey Veritas 007, Homebrew and force-carb bottle Feature: From the Cellar - Lost Abbey Veritas 007 – Sour Blend w/cab franc grapes. Matt brought a bottle of Veritas 007 from The Lost Abbey to celebrate the first episode. In short, it was awesome. The Lost Abbey Veritas 007 Feature: Homebrew - Nagel’s Soured Dunkelweizen Greg Nagel brought some of his Dunkelweizen to share on the show. Half of the batch was fermented in the standard, yet not-so-typical way, and the other half went way of the sours. Base beer: Metheweizen 60% Wheat, 40% German Pilsner, Rice Hulls, .5 lb Blackprinz at vorlauf, 20 IBU Hersbrucker hops, WLP380 German Hef IV. Mash temp to desired mouthfeel, ferment at desired temp to obtain banana/clove flavors/aromas. The beer sampled in this episode was mashed at 154º and fermented at 85º-90ºF. Previous batches at 74ºF were more pleasant and to style. Sour beer: Nervous Breakdown (base beer on Roselare yeast cake and bugs from a Lil’ Opal contributing barrel at Barrelworks) Thanks for listening and enjoy the ride. Cheers!
