This panel discussion on the legacy of George Shultz, former US secretary of state and Hoover Institution senior fellow, features the Hoover Institution's director, Condoleezza Rice; Israeli politician and human rights activist Natan Sharansky; and Abraham Sofaer, the former legal advisor to the State Department under George Shultz and the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy and National Security Affairs at the Hoover Institution. Together, they reflect on Shultz's contributions to US foreign policy, human rights, and the end of the Cold War. The discussion explores Shultz's deep commitment to human rights, particularly in supporting Soviet refuseniks and advancing the cause of freedom in the USSR. The panelists recount how Shultz worked alongside President Ronald Reagan to integrate human rights into diplomatic negotiations, leverage the Helsinki Accords, and challenge the Soviet Union's authoritarian system. Sharansky, a former Soviet dissident imprisoned for 12 years for his activism, shares personal experiences of Shultz's support for Soviet Jews and recounts the political maneuvering that contributed to his own release. Rice and Sofaer discuss Shultz's diplomatic philosophy, his strategic role in Reagan's administration, and his ability to bridge the gap between hardline anti-communism and pragmatic diplomacy. The conversation also touches on the role of ideas in shaping policy and whether current generations fully grasp the stakes of international conflict in the way Cold War leaders like Shultz and Reagan did. The panelists debate modern revisionist views on the end of the Cold War with a strong defense of Reagan and Shultz's deliberate strategy to weaken the Soviet Union. Ultimately, the discussion serves as both a tribute to the life and times of George Shultz and a reflection on leadership, diplomacy, and the enduring battle of ideas in world affairs. Recorded on February 12, 2025.

Why did Navalny return to Moscow, and to certain arrest? What were his aims? What is it like to be held in what Sharansky refers to as his “alma mater” -- solitary confinement? And given Navalny's murder, has Putin's regime etched another notch in its belt, or is it still doomed to fail, as Sharansky predicted long ago? Born Anatoly Borisovich Shcharansky on January 20, 1948, in Donetsk, Ukraine (formerly part of the Soviet Union), he later changed his name to Natan Sharansky. Sharansky's journey began as a gifted mathematician and chess player, which led him to pursue a career in science. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he became deeply involved in the Soviet dissident movement during the 1970s, advocating for human rights and freedom of expression. Sharansky's plight gained international attention, and he became a cause célèbre for human rights organizations and activists around the world. His wife, Avital, spearheaded an international campaign advocating for his release, and their love story became a symbol of resilience and unwavering commitment. Finally, in 1986, after years of international pressure and negotiations, Sharansky was released as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. His arrival in Israel marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. In Israel, Sharansky became an influential political leader and advocate for democracy and human rights. He served as a Member of Knesset (the Israeli parliament) and held several ministerial positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade. Sharansky's extraordinary journey from prisoner to statesman has made him a sought-after speaker and an inspiration to people from all walks of life. He has written several books, including his memoir "Fear No Evil," which chronicles his experiences and his unwavering commitment to freedom. Today, Natan Sharansky continues to be a passionate advocate for democracy, human rights, and the State of Israel. Arabs are sitting on the Supreme Court. In fact, [an] Arab judge sent [an] Israeli president to prison for sexual harassment. And 25 percent of all the doctors are Arab. A Distinguished Scholar in North American History at McGill University currently living in Jerusalem, Gil Troy is an award-winning American presidential historian and a leading Zionist activist. In the Foreword to Troy's book, The Zionist Ideas: Visions for the Jewish Homeland – Then, Now, Tomorrow, Natan Sharansky writes:  “This magnificent work is the perfect follow-up to Arthur Hertzberg's classic The Zionist Idea. Combining, like Hertzberg, a scholar's eye and an activist's ear, Gil Troy demonstrates that we now live in a world of Zionist Ideas, with many different ways to help Israel flourish as a democratic Jewish state.” Troy's latest book which he penned with Sharansky, is Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People. Recently designated an Algemeiner J-100, one of the top 100 people “positively influencing Jewish life,” Troy wrote The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, and ten other books on the American presidency. One leading historian called Age of Clinton “the best book on the man and his times.” Troy edited and updated another classic, the multi-volume History of American Presidential Campaigns, originally edited by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. and Fred Israel. He is now writing new essays on the 2012 and 2016 elections. Troy's book Moynihan's Moment: America's Fight against Zionism as Racism, describes the fall of the UN, the rise of Reagan and the spread of Anti-Zionism.  Jewish Ideas Daily designated it one of 2012's “best books.” He appeared as a featured commentator on CNN's popular multipart documentaries, The Eighties, The Nineties, and The 2000s. He has been interviewed on most major North American TV and Radio networks. Troy has published essays in the American, Canadian, and Israeli media, including writing essays for the New York Times' “Campaign Stops” in 2012 and 2016. He wrote a weekly column for the Daily Beast, “Secret Lives,” putting current events in historical perspective, and writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post. On this episode, Troy shares his one way ticket to a “Free Marketplace of Ideas”. In the course of our sweeping conversation, he shares the importance of listening generously vs. listening censoriously, how racialism is spreading in America today where people are defined by the color of their skin and not the content of their character, and how the word “Zionism” has sadly become hijacked. Plus, Troy points to what every successful President should possess, why there were actually six George W. Bush presidencies, and the “secret sauce” of Bill Clinton. Gil Troy is just one of the engaging personalities featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. Their destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Former Senator, Joe Lieberman; Playwright, David Henry Hwang; Journalist-Humorist-Actor, Mo Rocca; SkyBridge Capital Founder & Co-Managing Partner, Anthony Scaramucci; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, chefs, writers, intellectuals, etc.

As for the futile… you'll have to listen to the story of his ancestor “The Patriot Rabbi” in the American Revolution. About Aryeh: he is the author of My Israel Trail, about hiking the 600-mile Israel National Trail and the search for peace in the Middle East. He is the director emeritus of MediaCentral, a Jerusalem-based project of HonestReporting providing support services to foreign journalists based in or visiting Israel. Born in Washington, DC; grew up in San Francisco; made Aliya in 1984. This episode focuses on the immigration of Soviet, Ethiopian, and Syrian Jewry to Israel, the impact of which has been massive. Over a million Jews moved to Israel at the end of the Cold War alone, greatly increasing its small population and bringing professional backgrounds that helped trigger a high-tech boom. The United States played a key role in all three of these immigration waves, using economic, diplomatic, and military means to support them.Host David Makovsky discusses this transformative cooperation with Natan Sharansky and Malcolm Hoenlein. Sharansky embodied the Soviet Jewry movement in the 1970s and 1980s, uttering the iconic words “Next year in Jerusalem” that captured hearts around the world and landed him on the cover of Time magazine. He recently completed a nine-year term as chair of the Jewish Agency, the Israeli organization that links Jewish communities around the world. Hoenlein has been a dominant figure in American Jewish groups for decades, most recently completing thirty-two years as executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. He has also been a key figure in winning U.S. government support for persecuted Jewish communities.Audio Clips UsedFreedom Sunday See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Natan Sharansky sits down with Peter Robinson to discuss Soviet communism and its impact on his personal life. He discusses his book Fear No Evil: The Classic Memoir of One Man’s Triumph over a Police State, which details a compelling account of his time in a Soviet prison and the inspiration he found in himself, the Hebrew Bible, and Ronald Reagan’s speeches about freedom. Sharansky realized through KGB interrogations and his time in prison that nobody but himself is responsible for his own human dignity. Sharansky also becomes fully aware of how important freedom is—especially the freedoms included in the US Constitution and that Reagan often refers to in his speeches. Sharansky's interview should open our eyes and minds to the lessons learned from silencing people we disagree with. The examples of silencing dissent, resulting in the empowerment of Stalin and the strengthening of the former Soviet Union, should be a lesson for all of us: to listen to ideas and views we may not agree with, and to speak up when we believe our friends and country are going in the wrong direction. In 1986 only 914 Soviet Jews were allowed to emigrate; by 1990 the number was 186,815.  A group of about 11,000 who had been denied emigration visas were known as refuseniks. Natan Sharansky, a spokesperson for the refuseniks during the mid-1970s, helped draw global attention to their desire to leave and to human rights abuses in the USSR. Arrested on charges of espionage and treason, in 1978 he was sentenced to 13 years of forced labor. His wife Avital led an international campaign to free him. Under pressure from President Ronald Reagan, Gorbachev released Sharansky on February 11, 1986.
