Today on the Run Culture Podcast, I chatted to one of the most ‘well read, knowledgeable and innovative' coaching minds in current day distance running; Brad Hudson. The interview was quite high level, it covered a lot of territory and did bounce around a fair bit, many times I didn't know what direction it was going to go which made it fun. Since starting the Run Culture podcast some 5yrs ago, I've had some interviews I've really cherished and this one ranks right up there as one of my favorites, I had a blast trying to keep up with this running genius. Brad is a well-known running coach (who's currently living in LA, USA) and was a former elite (2:13 marathoner) distance runner himself. He is recognized for coaching many top-level athletes, including; Dathan Ritzenhein, Shayne Culpepper, Jason Hartman, Parker Stinson, Benita Johnson, Allie Kieffer, Jorge Torres, amongst many others…. There were many take home messages, including: - How Modern elite training has changed in 2024? - Why we should all be 'Experimenting, Innovating and Evolving' our training? - Some of Brad's key Endurance Training principles. - The importance of customized and responsive training plans. - The Importance of Sleep, Psychology, Nutrition, Stress management. - His many coaching influences (too many to list, he's a lifelong learner and learns from anyone if he feels it could be useful). Some mentioned, include; Mark Wetmore, Bill Dellinger, Renate Canova, Arthur Lydiard, Percy Cerutty, Antonio Cabral, Jack Daniels, Nick Bideau and Pat Clohessy. - And many other pearls of coaching wisdom, including his two book recommendations- Ryan Holliday's ‘Daily Stoic' and Marc Bubb's book; ‘Peak: The New Science of Athletic Performance That is Revolutionizing Sports' If anyone wanted to reach out to Brad for ‘Online Running Coaching' Brad's email is: hudsoncoachingmarathon@yahoo.com Thanks once again Brad, you were a joy to listen to and have certainly got me excited about my own coaching!
Today's podcast is one of the best we've ever released. It is entertaining, deep, impactful, and will leave you walking away hearing one of the best stories from our sport. The man who makes his first appearance on the podcast today is Parker Stinson, the man who was one of the first athletes I looked up to when I became a fan of the sport in middle school. If you're not familiar with Parker, he is the US record holder in the 25K. He has seven top-three finishes in major road races over distances ranging from 10K to 25K. He is a nine-time All-American from the University of Oregon where he was third in the 5000 meters at back-to-back NCAA championships. Parker is the only person to win the 10,000 meters at the US Junior Championships three times. He also placed sixth at the IAAF Junior World Championships and won the Pan-Am Junior title. He currently holds a Marathon PR of 2:10:53. He is based out of Boulder, Colorado, where he runs for Roots Running, and has represented Saucony for his entire professional running career. In today's episode, Parker dives into his full story and paints the picture of where the sport has taken him; he dives into the ups, the downs, and everything in between. He shares untold stories such as almost retiring from the sport, and more. This is a top-five favorite podcast I've ever released. It's raw and emotional at times, but also entertaining and inspiring. Needless to say, this is one you will not want to miss. In fact, I'd be willing to bet you'll want to listen to it again after the first time. So, with all of that said, tap into the Parker Stinson Special. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. The podcast graphic was done by the talented: Xavier Gallo. In this conversation, recorded the morning after the marathon, we break down the race in granular detail, the last-minute racing strategy alterations, how it played out and what he's taking from an incredible run. @_parker_stinson_ joined me again on the show to recap @falmouthroadrace , talk about how training is going, and his plans for @bostonmarathon . My favorite parts of this conversation is Parker talking about how he pushes through rough patches in races and training! We will have those moments when we don't believe we can finish a race or even take one more step, but somehow if we go at it with the right mindset…we continue on and finish what we started. Parker is prime example of grit and determination! . Check out the episode and be sure to follow @theruneatsleepshow and @_parker_stinson_

He's fast, he's a badass, and he unveiled Saucony's latest racer at the Falmouth Road Race. Parker Stinson (@_parker_stinson_) is a Saucony pro runner who was a 9x All-American at the University of Oregon and holds the U.S. record for the 25K. That's a weird distance, we know. We talked about the 25K and other obscure race distances with Parker, as well as trash-talking pre-race, his pain cave, working out at night on the treadmill, and, of course, the Endorphin Pro+ (29:04). The gang also gives a quick review of the Endorphin Pro+ and recaps Shalane Flanagan's Berlin Marathon.
"I want to be top American at a World Marathon Major. I want to take that step forward. It's taken me a lot longer to get to that point. That's just how it goes sometimes with surgeries, setbacks and there not being that many opportunities...Boston is hard though." Welcome back to the podcast, Parker Stinson. The last time he was on this show, he was getting ready to run the 2018 Chicago Marathon and still had a bit of work to prove himself as a pro runner on the roads following his successful career at the University of Oregon. After a coaching switch from Brad Hudson to Dathan Ritzenhein, Parker seemed to find a bit of that spark that he needed and had a strong 2019 campaign that included running a 25K American record of 1:13:48 and then a 2:10.:53 marathon in Chicago that fall. Unfortunately, he had to scratch from the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials due to an injury - which he'll talk about in this episode and then underwent knee surgery in 2020. The road back hasn't been easy but Parker peels back the curtain on that process and why he's ready to give it a go at the Boston Marathon. Is a possible rivalry brewing with Scott Fauble? Parker will be one of the elite athletes at the Endorphin Pro+ showcase, which will be a 10K in Germany that will be streamed live on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel with me and Kyle Merber on the mic.
The interview with Parker Stinson starts at the 52.10 mark.
Parker Stinson @_parker_stinson_ sat down for a few to talk to me about his origin story, his partnership with @saucony, the ups and downs of running, his injury and the road to recovery. . Parker has a ton of accomplishments, but honestly I think the most impressive one is yet to come. Comeback stories are ALWAYS the best from the big screen to the big city marathons!!
It's finally time for the marathon we've had our eyes on for several years. Benji is back in town and we analyze the key players, the dark horses, the course, the weather, and everything else you need to know before the U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials this weekend in Atlanta. Plus, we make our predictions sure to go wrong. Note: Shortly after recording this episode male contender Parker Stinson announced his withdrawal from the race due to injury.
In this two-part episode with Parker Stinson he details the specifics around his decision not to run in the Olympic Trials and we do a preview of the event. The first part of the conversation is dedicated to his health This decision for Parker was excruciating and I thank him for his candor in telling the story. In the second half of the conversation, in classic Parker fashion, he provides insight into the race and racers heading into what could be a classic American Marathon. Episode 143: Dathan Ritzenhein joins us to talk about the recent Chicago and NYC Marathons. Along with his own running, he is also coaching and his athletes include Olympic hopeful Parker Stinson. We talk Olympic marathon trials and shoe tech. 1:00 What happened so you needed to pull out of the Chicago Marathon? 4:28 We have 11 men under the A Standard now so it is harder than ever to make the team 5:01 Will the trials be your next race? 6:23 You are now coaching Parker Stinson who has the A Standard 7:47 Parker's first marathon he went out hard and blew up in historic fashion, this race was a perfect split 9:57 When did you and Parker start working together? 11:36 Was racing strategy the first thing you guys talked about? 13:50 There were 4 Americans all running within 20 seconds of each other 15:12 We are seeing crazy times being put up, how much do you attribute that to the shoes? 17:40 Is there any concern with you that the technology is getting too advanced? 19:44 Even if you could limit them in races, but that doesn't change the fact that they get the benefit in training 21:33 What did you think of the 1:59 marathon? 22:49 What did you think about the women's new marathon record? 23:40 Have you been to the Atlanta course to scope it out? 25:03 Is it a lot of hills, or the hills it has are big? 26:20 With the hilly course, who has an advantage? 28:01 Comparing marathon times on paper, but there are currently 4 guys are under 2:10, could this course be an equalizer? 30:02 How are you using Final Surge Resources Dathan on Instagram Dathan on Twitter Dathan Coaching Services
He did it! Parker Stinson has been open and honest about his goal of breaking 2:11 in the marathon for two years. Last weekend at the Chicago marathon he turned that vision into a reality. He was one of 10 American men to break 2:12 in a phenomenal group performance. In this episode, we talk about all that, how it feels to get the monkey off his back, finally pacing the full 26.2 the way he dreamed, and more, in Parker’s typical and wonderful frankness. One thing every runner understands is struggle. Having just (both of us) completed the Chicago Marathon, we decided to dive deep into the topic of struggle and our experiences surrounding embracing the struggle and overcoming the struggle. The World of Running As always, before discussing our main topic, we shared some of the most recent tidbits dominating the running conversation this week: Eliud Kipchoge's INEOS 1:59 Challenge A whole lot of Chicago Marathon (more on that here) Brigid Kosgei's new world record Parker Stinson's impressive 2:10:53 ANDI RAN HER FIRST EVER OTQ (Olympic Trials Qualifier)! Main Topic: The Struggle We break it down like this: embracing the struggle means thriving amidst the pain overcoming the struggle means understanding what you CAN control and learning HOW to control it To illustrate, we highlight those points with examples and experiences of how struggle in and out of running interrelates. Then we wrap it up with a short list of helpful ways to overcome struggle, like: prioritizing effectively knowing yourself thoroughly and more!
Carrie chats with the 2019 US 25K Champion Parker Stinson! They talk about the upcoming Bank of America Chicago Marathon, the Olympic Trials, setting an American Record, what it is like to have Dathan Ritzenhein as a coach, how his wife is the fastest teacher in the US, and so much more.
What a difference a week makes. In consecutive weeks Parker Stinson ran the Crim 10 Miler in the USATF 20K Championship. The beginning of this doubleheader did not go well. In this episode, Parker details, with brutal honesty, exactly what went wrong in the first race and how he corrected it in the second. This episode is sponsored by InsideTracker. "What I hope is that it's the book that can make you faster, make you love running even more and make you feel like you want to go out for a run – which people have told me and that's really cool that's the feeling they get." Matthew Futterman, the New York Times' deputy sports editor, joins the podcast to discuss his new book "Running to the Edge: A Band of Misfits and the Guru Who Unlocked the Secrets of Speed." The book paints an excellent portrait of Bob Larsen’s untraditional training methods and plans to really make U.S. distance running relevant again in the early 2000s with Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor. “The ugly side of the sport is an amazing thing that we get to experience as runners. That’s the most appealing thing to me about running is just to get yourself in these pretty daunting situations, pull yourself up and march through it. Usually, it works pretty well as a larger metaphor for life.” Stephen Kersh joins the podcast. He might be familiar to a lot of people who follow the podcast since he's made a couple of appearances on the feed and also was one of the integral figures who helped start CITIUS MAG in 2017. This past weekend I was part of his crew at the Western States Endurance Run. It’s a 100-mile race from Squaw to Auburn in California. This was his first Western States and his first-ever 100-mile race and he did it in 15 hours, 54 minutes and 15 seconds to finish 7th overall. Heck of a debut. I was truly honored to be part of it. Major props to my fellow crew members Jeanne Mack, Paul Snyder, Tim Jeffreys, Ryan Sterner and the Kersh family. I sat down with Stephen on Sunday night to try and unpack the whole day. Allie Kieffer joins The CITIUS MAG Podcast before she takes on the 2018 New York City Marathon. The Big Apple was the site of her major marathon breakthrough in 2017. She finished fifth overall in 2:29:39, which was also a personal best by more than 15 minutes. The only American woman ahead of her was Shalane Flanagan, who became the first U.S. woman to win the race in 40 years. Since last November, Allie signed a professional contract with Oiselle and moved to Boulder to train under Brad Hudson. If the name sounds familiar, he is also the coach of past podcast guest Parker Stinson. Workouts seem to indicate that Allie may be in for another big race and she says that she wants to run fast. We discuss her training including why she's raced back-to-back half marathons. Allie reveals what she's learned from studying tape and film of other marathoners. Allie is also very vocal about body image activism. Her Instagram page is filled with various posts about her past struggles with weight and body image and how she is now comfortable with her body. We discuss the process of what's made her comfortable in that conversation and how others have responded. We also make note of the LetsRun message boards and why she's OK with reading some of the criticism that can sometimes end up there.
