Today on the Run Culture Podcast, I chatted to one of the most ‘well read, knowledgeable and innovative' coaching minds in current day distance running; Brad Hudson. The interview was quite high level, it covered a lot of territory and did bounce around a fair bit, many times I didn't know what direction it was going to go which made it fun. Since starting the Run Culture podcast some 5yrs ago, I've had some interviews I've really cherished and this one ranks right up there as one of my favorites, I had a blast trying to keep up with this running genius. Brad is a well-known running coach (who's currently living in LA, USA) and was a former elite (2:13 marathoner) distance runner himself. He is recognized for coaching many top-level athletes, including; Dathan Ritzenhein, Shayne Culpepper, Jason Hartman, Parker Stinson, Benita Johnson, Allie Kieffer, Jorge Torres, amongst many others…. There were many take home messages, including: - How Modern elite training has changed in 2024? - Why we should all be 'Experimenting, Innovating and Evolving' our training? - Some of Brad's key Endurance Training principles. - The importance of customized and responsive training plans. - The Importance of Sleep, Psychology, Nutrition, Stress management. - His many coaching influences (too many to list, he's a lifelong learner and learns from anyone if he feels it could be useful). Some mentioned, include; Mark Wetmore, Bill Dellinger, Renate Canova, Arthur Lydiard, Percy Cerutty, Antonio Cabral, Jack Daniels, Nick Bideau and Pat Clohessy. - And many other pearls of coaching wisdom, including his two book recommendations- Ryan Holliday's ‘Daily Stoic' and Marc Bubb's book; ‘Peak: The New Science of Athletic Performance That is Revolutionizing Sports' If anyone wanted to reach out to Brad for ‘Online Running Coaching' Brad's email is: hudsoncoachingmarathon@yahoo.com Thanks once again Brad, you were a joy to listen to and have certainly got me excited about my own coaching!

Welcome to The Anchor Point Podcast episode 115 with: Lucas Garrett, founder of Landsharks Running Company. In this episode, Lucas shares some important running tips and tricks, such as proper recovery, the importance of sleep, why supplements and PEDs are dumb, and how to become an overall better runner...Lucas was a football player who wanted to learn how to run faster, but he was told he didn't need to learn to run because he was an offensive lineman. Despite this, Lucas was determined to prove them wrong. He lost 60 pounds, joined his junior college track team, and ran the 1500 and 800. After junior college, he started competing in triathlons and working on all three disciplines.Lucas' passion for running grew as he discovered that he could compete and loved learning new things about the sport. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology and went into the fire service, working up and down the state of California, eventually landing his dream job at the Lodi Fire Department. But Lucas still wanted something more, so he began reading books by top running experts like Jack Daniels, Matt Fitzgerald, Ben Bergeron, Alex Hutchinson, Brad Hudson, Timothy Galley, Steve Magness, and Ryan Hall. It was a podcast episode with Ryan Hall that ignited a fire in Lucas to become a marathoner and running coach.Join us in this episode to learn more about Lucas' journey and how he founded Landsharks Running Company to help others achieve their running goals. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, Lucas' story will inspire you to never give up, and to make it through the fire season un-injured and an overall better runner! If you want to get ahold of Lucas for either some one on one, or group coaching - Be sure to check out the following links:Website: https://www.landsharksrunningco.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/landsharksrunningco/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/landsharksrunningcoBe sure to hit him up!Y'all know the drill:Stay safe, stay savage... Meet Claudia Becque Johnston, radiation oncology nurse by day, and one of a handful of women to qualify and complete three (2008/2012/2016) Olympic Trials Marathons! Claudia also qualified and repped the USA in the 2016 50K World Championships. It takes a serious commitment to your craft to compete at this level, many times having to run at 4:30AM before seeing patients. Whenever a workout didn't go as well as planned, the positive attitude and determination of her cancer patients would immediately help provide much needed perspective. We took a deep dive into her favorite races and she shared some wonderful and inspiring stories. A journey of learning self-belief from her key coaches, Tom McGlynn, Brad Hudson, and a fellow OTQ runner and friend, Dana Coons Thiele, who encouraged her that she too could make that dream come true. The journey from imposter syndrome to 'I belong.' The epic chase to nail a sub-2:40! Her husband, key teammates, athletes that inspire her, and therapists that have supported her on this amazing ride. Claudia suffered a triple femur break in June 2021 and is working hard to get back. I'm so inspired by her amazing journey and looking forward to watching her #stayinthefight and grind her way back! What an action-packed episode we got coming at you this week, our last of 2021. We touch on Ryan Hall's huge gainz, Fred has a poignant and amazing story of a runner getting lost for 36 hours in Florida. Art does an awesome job mentioning that he has in fact done a 419 mile bike ride almost entirely across NY state, and the long way not the "easy" north-south route, you chickens! Seriously, this year can fuck right off. But on another entirely related note: Jimmy is an obvious troll- this episode he starts shit with about 11 different demographic groups. Weightlifters? Check. People from Massachusettes? Yep. THE BRITISH? Holy fuck he went in HARD on those bitches. Will we lose listeners as a result? Art says "I hope not" but I think you're all batshit for even listening to one episode. Psyche, I'm grateful you listen. You're crazy and I like you. You're like "hold up a boombox outside my window" crazy tho, not like "kill my family's rabbit" crazy, thank you very much for the nightmares Glenn Fucking Close. Okay, let's do 2022 now. "I want to be top American at a World Marathon Major. I want to take that step forward. It's taken me a lot longer to get to that point. That's just how it goes sometimes with surgeries, setbacks and there not being that many opportunities...Boston is hard though." Welcome back to the podcast, Parker Stinson. The last time he was on this show, he was getting ready to run the 2018 Chicago Marathon and still had a bit of work to prove himself as a pro runner on the roads following his successful career at the University of Oregon. After a coaching switch from Brad Hudson to Dathan Ritzenhein, Parker seemed to find a bit of that spark that he needed and had a strong 2019 campaign that included running a 25K American record of 1:13:48 and then a 2:10.:53 marathon in Chicago that fall. Unfortunately, he had to scratch from the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials due to an injury - which he'll talk about in this episode and then underwent knee surgery in 2020. The road back hasn't been easy but Parker peels back the curtain on that process and why he's ready to give it a go at the Boston Marathon. Is a possible rivalry brewing with Scott Fauble? Parker will be one of the elite athletes at the Endorphin Pro+ showcase, which will be a 10K in Germany that will be streamed live on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel with me and Kyle Merber on the mic.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Maggie last fall when she modeled the exercises for our new strength training program. We spent a few hours at a weight lifting gym called Barbell Strategy in Boulder, CO. Maggie and Addie Bracy (2x Mountain Runner of the Year) demonstrated 40+ exercises and we had a videographer to capture all of the magic. During her time at the University of Arizona, she won the PAC-10 Steeplechase Championship (she'll also tell you that she's twice won her beer in weight!). Her PR for the steeple - one of my absolute favorites - is 10:03 or the equivalent of about 10:45-10:50 for 2-miles (with 30-inch barriers and water jumps). It’s quite impressive. Now, Maggie trains under elite coach Brad Hudson. Brad, as I’m sure you know at this point, is the author of my favorite book on running - Run Faster: How to be Your Own Best Coach From the 5k to the Marathon. If you don’t own this book, go buy it. You won’t regret it. Back to Maggie: just last month she got on the podium at the Arizona RnR Hlaf Marathon, running 1:17:20 for third place. And I'm thrilled she's on the podcast to talk about her running and the benefits of strength training she has personally experienced.

Kayla Moon, Arab High School's Dance Captain, drops in to talk about life and dance, infact she teaches the whole crew a couple of dances. I've fielded hundreds of lifting questions from runners who all want to know, "How do I lift the right way?" It's a great question. In fact, it's THE question! Knowing how to lift properly will: Save you a lot of wasted time Give you the actual results you want Reduce your injury risk But without knowing WHY runners should lift then it's impossible to answer HOW runners should lift. Do runners need to build strength? Or power? Or neuromuscular coordination? When is the right time to work on each skill? Also: Can kettlebell work be added into a lifting program for runners? If so, how? Are CrossFit or other HIIT sessions appropriate? If so, when? Should trail runners lift the same way as road runners? Clearly, this is a complex topic! Thankfully, we're featuring a top strength coach on the podcast to answer all of your questions about lifting for runners. You'll recognize Randy Hauer as the strength coach behind the programming of High Performance Lifting - our step-by-step lifting program for runners. Randy has over 30 years of strength and conditioning experience in a wide variety of disciplines and training styles: Olympic Weightlifting Sports performance coaching Personal training CrossFit Kettlebell training He uses insights from these experiences to develop world-class programming for pro runners in Boulder, Colorado. He works directly with some of Brad Hudson's Hudson Elite team members. In High Performance Lifting, Randy brings runners through a comprehensive 16-week strength program that periodizes strength training so runners will get strong, powerful, and (most importantly) faster. And today he's answering the most common questions we've received over the last few weeks: HIIT / CrossFit training for runners When you should lift (Before or after running? Off days? Hard days?) Soreness from lifting weights Trail runners and lifting Mobility and movement fluency Is HPL just for "fast" runners? Is it right for older runners 50+? What about high school aged kids?

Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein joined the CITIUS MAG Podcast just days after announcing that he has joined the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project and will be training under the guidance of Keith and Kevin Hanson in Michigan. Ritzenhein is now 34 years old but remains intent on trying to qualify for his fourth Olympic team in 2020. In this week's episode of the podcast, Ritzenhein discusses how different training is for him now that he's older, his key to longevity within the sport, lessons learned from coaches like Mark Wetmore, Alberto Salazar and Brad Hudson in his career, plus whether he thinks the more recent Colorado cross-country teams were better than the legendary 90s teams.
Welcome to Episode 32 of the Final Surge Podcast where today we talk to 2016 USATF Mountain Ultra Trail Woman's open runner of the year Addie Bracy. Addie, a former Olympic Trials track athlete made the switch to mountain racing in 2016 and won the US Championship in her first race. We talk about the transition to mountain and trail running and we also talk about her getting involved as a high school coach. I hope you enjoy this show and make sure you check out what the Hudson team is doing with coaching to support their athletes. Addie welcome, we like to start out getting to know our guest a little better so if you could tell me how you got your start in running? What was your high school running career like? You walked on at UNC, how was it walking on and what can you share with our listeners about that experience? You had a very respectful 16:20 in the 5k in college, that may not have been good enough to win a national championship, but many of our listeners, male and female would take it. After running at North Carolina, what was your thought process about what next? Many, including myself, consider Brad Hudson to be one of the top US Distance coaches of our time. He was a guest of ours in episode 2 of this podcast last summer. How did you get connected with Brad and Hudson Elite? So in North Carolina were you running on your own and not with a team? How hard was it running on your own vs running with a group like you do now? You recently made the jump into running up mountains for fun, what were you thinking? So that was your first mountain race? As you mentioned the selection for the US Team was held at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire this past summer and you won the US Title on the Women’s side. I grew up in NH and have skied down Loon Mountain several times. But the only way I have even thought about going up is on the lift. When you lined up for that race what were your expectations? Then you got to represent the US in the World Mountain Running Championships, how was that feeling of representing your country? Are you going to continue to do mountain running competitively? What were the biggest changes you made in your training? What is a typical length and what is the elevation gain of a mountain race? Can you break down the training a little bit for us on a week what it looks like for you now? So it sounds like the biggest difference is your hard days instead of tempo work on the track is more of just trail work? Is a hard day still speed week or is to more climbing now for the hard day? Not only did you podium at the 2016 World Mountain Running Champs as a team, you also made the podium at the 2016 Eliptigo World Championships. How much time do you spend on an Eliptigo? You have run at the Olympic trials and other prestigious races in your career. What has been the highlight of your running career so far? You made the jump to high school coaching this past year. Dathan Ritzenhein is one of the most successful American distance runners of all time with three Olympic appearances. Today we get to talk to Dathan about his recent great run against Mo Farah at the Great North 1/2, his upcoming NYC Marathon appearance and how he has prepared for it. Dathan, thank for joining us today, can you tell our listeners how you got started in running when you were a kid? You have been training for the NYC Marathon and recently ran the Great North 1/2 Marathon. You ran a 60:12, just 12 seconds off your PR and finishing a very strong second to Mo Farah. It sounds like you are running the best you have in 6-7 years and you must be healthy, how is your training going for NYC? Can you give us an example of what the week looks like for you leading up to a marathon? We have a great field coming up for the NYC marathon, they are offering $100,000 in American only price money. How much does that American only price money play in getting such a strong field? Is there one person, besides yourself obviously that American running fans should really be watching out for? Some people have been able to excel while being self-coached, while others never were able to find a great long-term groove. How is the self-coaching going for you? How has your training changed since you left Oregon and started training on your own again? Do you think less high-end speed stuff has helped you stay healthier? You are dong some coaching yourself now? You have literally had some of the best coaches int he world From Wetmore to Brad Hudson and then Salazar. What did you learn from them that you use in your coaching now? Some questions we got from Twitter: For a podium finish you need a great finish. What did you do differently with the Great North race to ensure a great finish. Do you do any specific marathon training to work on being more efficient burning fat? Not that you are old, but as you get older you need to focus more on the process and nutrition than a college kid does. What changes have you made to your nutrition over the years? Coach Brad Hudson starts out by telling us about how he got started in running. Being an average soccer player he tried running one day and a cross country coach recognized his talent quickly. Hudson was fortunate enough to be coached early by a young Mark Wetmore. In high school, Hudson would have some weeks where he was running 140 miles in a week. We talk about how Hudson made the transition into coaching from being a runner himself and selling shoes. The Hudson Elite team is making some noise with recent successes in the running community. They have a unique group of runners. We talk about how the runners he coaches are developmental athletes with jobs and school and life trying to train and get better. All of Hudson’s athletes do coaching and use Final Surge as part of their coaching program. You can find out more about his coaching programs at HudsonElite.com. Proceeds from the athletes coaching mostly go to the club to help support the athletes. Everyone Hudson coaches, and every coach that works for Hudson Elite uses Final Surge. One of the reasons Hudson likes Final Surge so much is because it is simple to use, but has all the features he needs. One book Hudson wrote with Matt Fitzgerald is Run Fast. Now he has released a new book The Little Black Book Redux. We talk about what is new in this book and what makes them so different. The Black Book Redux is all the workouts he has picked up over his running and coaching career. The new book has over 200 elite workouts. The book can be found at CoachHudson.com We discuss how even though these are elite runners workouts, which any athlete can take them and adapt them for themselves. The book covers everything from 800 meters through the marathon. We talk about what advice Hudson would have to a college runner who wants to continue running post-collegiate. Not every elite runner starts out as an elite runner out of college. Many starts as a developmental athlete and Hudson gives us an example of what a typical day of a developmental runner looks like. Hudson shares with us some of the things he is working on to help keep his runners healthy and running consistently as consistency is the most important thing in distance running. Hudson stresses how he does not mess with runners form but works on making them more efficient with drills and strength exercises. A couple of questions that came in from Twitter. How many times a year should non-elite runners take a break from hard training and focus more on a traditional base phase Second question form Twitter, how long after a goal race (not a marathon) can you re-race while maintaining specific endurance benefits.
On this weeks show has Tom had a baby? We talk about amazing races in the Bank of America Chicago marathon and the incredible Ironman world triathlon championships in Kona.
