"I'm a competitor. I like to say I'm a dog. You always think that you have what it takes. And I know that I have what it takes. It was great though; it grounds you and roots you and makes you hungry. Everything happens for a reason. Every race that I'm in, I'm going to try to win. I don't like to lose. But when I do lose, I lose with grace. So for me, it was great for my career – what I just went through – for the sheer fact that it made me hungry, humble and focused for this year.” Brandon Miller is the 2022 NCAA indoor 800m champion and just wrapped up his first year as a pro runner. He just signed with the Brooks Beasts and will join the team in Seattle in 2024. After foregoing the remainder of his NCAA eligibility at Texas A&M, he spent the past 10 months working with coach Bobby Kersee in Los Angeles. He has a personal best of 1:44.97 for 800m and represented Team USA at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene. He's been competing in the sport since he was seven years old at the AAU level. We touch on how he's managed the progression, lessons from his brief stint with Kersee and what his biggest hopes with coach Danny Mackey and the Beasts – where he'll be training alongside the likes of Isaiah Harris, Devin Dixon and Josh Kerr. “I still haven't processed it. I haven't celebrated at all, I had to go back to work and take care of my daughter. Actually, I woke her up from her nap to watch Josh win because I was like, ‘He might do it, so let's wake her up just so she will remember'... Even yesterday [at the 5th Avenue Mile] they had the camera on Josh and they replayed his last 200m and I still got goosebumps. It's been three weeks, so I don't know if I'll ever process it. I hear people say this and I know what they mean; it's like you just get humbled by it. You're like, ‘Man, that was really hard to do.'” Danny Mackey has been the coach of the Brooks Beasts since the team started in 2013 and can now say that he's the coach to a world champion after Josh Kerr's stunning 1500m victory in Budapest. The Beasts have put together a strong year with Nia Akins winning the U.S. indoor and outdoor 800m titles before finishing sixth in the World Championship final. Marta Freitas and Isiah Harris also competed at the World Championships. Henry Wynne is running strong with a fifth-place finish at USAs and then a 3:53.70 mile PR at Falmouth this summer. It's been a culmination of more than a decade of hard work, learning and adapting for coach Mackey and his meticulously scientific training perspective and approach. He's vocal about doing things the right way and not operating in any gray zone. You'll learn much more in this episode that goes beyond just the making of a world champion. A quick note before we start the interview, this has also been the most tragic and difficult year of Mackey's life. As reported by LetsRun.com, back in March, his fiancee died by suicide and he is now raising his five-month-old daughter on his own. He took a few days away from the team and coached remotely from the U.S. while the team was in Budapest. The pain and loss is still felt by Mackey and he's been resilient for his fellow coaching staff and athletes all along the way. Allie Ostrander is the example that she needed when she was younger. She was a high school track phenom, three-time NCAA steeplechase champion, and a professional runner with Brooks Beasts. But she suffered from an eating disorder the entire time, resulting in a string of injuries. In 2021, she entered an intensive recovery program, and went public with her story while she was there. She hopes that by sharing her experience she can educate young people and help them avoid the consequences of eating disorders and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport). Garrett Heath is a professional runner for Brooks.Garrett has demonstrated impressive range over the last couple of decades and with world-class PRs in events from the 1500m to the 10k, he has been a threat every time he steps on a starting line. As a three-time champion of the famed Edinburgh XC race, his gutsy racing style has carried him to victory over some of the world's most legendary runners including Mo Farah. I reached out to Garrett a couple of weeks ago after seeing an announcement that he was making the switch to trail running. Maybe it's up for debate, but in my mind he is the highest level track athlete to ever cross over. The dude is legit. In this conversation, we cover all the basics - what motivated him to make the change, why now, whether he will be coached and who his training partners will be, and what his race schedule will look like in 2022. Given his background with the famed Brooks Beasts training group in Seattle, we also have a long back and forth about what it would take to build similar type of team in the ultra world. We get his perspective on being a full-time runner, the pros and cons of the lifestyle, and whether he recommends it. And we talk about perceptions of the trail and ultra world outside our bubble and what it might take to recruit more professional athletes like Garrett into the sport.Timestamps:(2:01) - running background(4:00) - motivation to switch to trail running(8:03) - why now for trail running(11:03) - tentative 2022 racing schedule(13:26) - coaching and training partners(17:33) - training camps(20:35) - Brooks support(23:00) - Brooks Beasts, full-time running discussion(40:05) - conditions to build a trail running team(46:46) - outside perceptions of trail and ultra runningLinks:Garrett Heath beats Mo Farah at 2016 Great Edinburgh XCountryBrooks BeastsFollow Garrett on StravaFollow Garrett on InstagramAdditional Episodes You May Enjoy:#39 - Hillary Allen | Brooks Running, Out And Back, Recovery Process Mindset, 2022 UTMB#40 - Lee Sackett | Brooks Running, Running Industry Careers, Running Culture Talk#42 - Sarah Cummings | Wasatch Trail Scene, Brooks Running, JFK 50, Lessons From InjurySupport Singletrack:PatreonSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/singletracknews)

Josh shares the training and competing mindset in college, coming against college stars Ed Cheserek & Craig Engels while forming his breakout season both indoors and outdoors. Josh recounts the 2017 London World Championships, dealing with the lows that came off the training camp at Font-Romeu and using that experience to better understand himself. He explains the typical weeks of training during base and championship season back at New Mexico and his difference in mindset and raising the stakes by being vocal about his race intentions. Then he recalls the dramatic episode at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship turned a poor performance in the DMR into a dominant run in the Mile the following day. Josh goes into publicly claiming the NCAA 1500m record, then recalls the process of turning pro and why he ultimately chose to sign with the Brooks Beasts in Seattle, and forming his relationship with Brooks and head coach Danny Mackey. For this episode of the Sweat Elite Podcast we are joined by Scottish middle-distance talent Josh Kerr. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist in the 1500m joins us to discuss his life on and off the track, as well as the power of mindset for achieving big goals. Josh shares a lot about his training, his favourite sessions, his experiences in Tokyo, as well as the importance of goal setting, prioritising rest and having things outside of running to focus on. Josh's self-belief is really impressive and definitely something to learn from. If you've enjoyed this conversation with Josh you can hear more from him on the Sit & Kick which he hosts alongside his Brooks Beasts teammate Dave Ribich. We thank him for his time and sharing so much of his journey with us. Enjoy!
"I think if I can be in 3:27 shape again and just be stronger to maybe be able to run 3:28.5 in the final, that's the best I can do. If they keep getting better and run 3:25 or 3:26 in the final of a major championship, I've got to be honest with myself and say, 'Well I'm not there yet.' Because I'm not. I can run 3:27-high in a major championship this year. I know I can. If that wins, it wins. But it was the same conversation back in 2020: We can run 3:29 in the Olympic final and we just have to be happy with what that comes out with. We're chasing to be the best in the world. I want to be world champion this year. Everything that I can do to make that happen, I'm going to try. At the end of the day, if I cross the line running my best race as I did in 2021, I'll shake everyone's hand and be happy with my performance and how I represented myself and my brand at that major championships." My guest for today's episode is Brooks Beasts star and 2021 Olympic 1500m bronze medalist Josh Kerr. This man is entertaining to watch. Last summer with 5000 to 1 odds, he finished third in Tokyo with a 3:29.05 personal best. He was just shy of Mo Farah's outdoor 1500m British record. Just a few weeks ago, he ran 3:52.27 for the mile at the Millrose Games and finished second to Olli Hoare, who many heard in the After The Final Lap episode. So we get a little bit of a response from Josh on Olli's comments that he was outclassed by Olli in the final 100m of the race. It's setting up to be a solid rivalry with some head-to-head matchups to come at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon and also at the Commonwealth Games. Before all of that, Josh wants to be a British record holder so this weekend he's heading to Boston University to try and break Peter Elliott's indoor 1500m and mile British record. We talk a bit about his plans for that but also his plans and hopes to make this an entertaining season. Josh chooses his races wisely and he wants to make it appointment viewing. He's a great showman for the sport. SUPPORT THE SPONSORS FINAL SURGE: No matter if you are an athlete or a coach, Final Surge helps plan and attain both short, and long-term training success. “For some reason, I think everyone on this team is kind of an underdog. Everyone has that same killer mentality. We want to be at the top and we want to have that respect we deserve. Even Danny as a coach has been an underdog. Time after time, people are starting to understand these guys are legit. Josh is the best example of that. I think over the next couple of years, there will be more people winning medals.” Isaiah Harris is taking his 1:44.42 personal best for 800m and 3:42.63 personal best for 1,500m to the Brooks Beasts. In this episode, he tells CITIUS MAG why he decided to make the move after a year where he finished fourth in the 800 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials and recorded a victory at the British Grand Prix at Gateshead. He takes us through his early roots in finding success in track as a high schooler in Lewiston, Maine. By the end of his high school career, he held the Maine state record in every event from 200 meters through 800 meters. Riley Masters considers him the greatest athlete to come out of Maine. Now, Isaiah wants to give back to his community at home as a professional because Lewiston ranks as Maine's poorest city so you'll get to hear a bit about those plans. Consider Isaiah someone to watch in the 800 in 2022. HOW TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST
For our 50th EP, we spoke to Olympic bronze medallist in the 1500m, Josh Kerr. Josh ran a PB of 3:29 when he picked up his Olympic medal in Tokyo this year, and we talked through his career so far. We covered it all; from his NCAA achievements at New Mexico, to signing for the Brooks Beasts out of college, and then performing on the biggest stage of all this past summer. Enjoy!
Once again, your Aaron & Joshua Potts talk to Spencer Brown about his running journey. This time the running youtuber, is coming off his time with the Brooks Beasts through the 2020-2021 track season. Now he has returned to his hometown across the country in CT to be coached by his dad as he continues to document his journey on The Athlete Special YouTube Channel.
On this episode Lauren and Emma chat about Gwen Jorgensen's announcement that she is leaving Bowerman, coaching updates for Tinman Elite, BYU XC and Brooks Beasts and the Olympics starting this week. After the break they run down the results from the week at the USATF 6K Champs + Sound Running meet in SoCal.
This week I has the pleasure to speak with Josh Kerr of Brooks Beasts. He's a Scottish runner and former Lobo, just coming off a great 1500 at the Stumptown Twilight Meet on June 3rd. His 3:31.55 makes him the fastest at that distance ever on American soil. Of course we talk about that halfway through the conversation, but we start off discussing his podcast, the Sit & Kick Podcast, with his cohost, David Ribich. They have a unique style of interviewing that is fun. We also talked about their jersey sales which allowed runners to make their money back by racing in the jersey. He talks about traveling to British Olympic trials soon and what that looks like, as well getting to see his parents. Josh is a confident runner and it was fun to not only get his insight about Brooks, training in Albuquerque, his buddy (and former guest) Julian Florez, but also his thoughts on the future of athletes self promoting. I really appreciate Josh taking the time to talk to me and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Especially his musical choices. So put on that sunscreen, stay hydrated, be kind, and keep running, New Mexico.

Today we're talking to Spencer Brown. Spencer is currently a member of the Brooks Beasts running team but he joined the group of Olympic hopefuls in a pretty interesting way. The company found him online and asked him to join. Nick and Chris talked to Spencer the week before his training with the Beasts began to discuss how he went from social media runner to member of an elite running crew, his time running in high school and college, how he finds motivation to put in the work to succeed, and the insane journey he's been on so far. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support
“What I did, anyone else can do and more people should be doing that. The running market is starting to get a lot bigger. There are more people making YouTube channels because they’re thinking, ‘I can do that.’ You know I had an iPhone until I hit 30,000 subscribers. I’m still using iMovie until this day. It doesn’t have to be unbelievable quality videos. People are a little scared to make that jump. Having no fear helps me stay motivated to put out content and also show that I’m somewhat of an elite runner and I’m trying my best to continue.” My guest for today’s episode is Spencer Brown but many of you might know him as The Athlete Special from his popular YouTube series. Some of you who have been following CITIUS MAG from the start might be familiar with him because he was one of the original contributors to the site and ran a 4:16 Blue Jeans Mile back in 2017 to set a then-world record. He’s come a long way since. He has run 3:39 for the 1,500 meters and 3:59.97 for the mile. Recently, Brooks decided to take a chance on him and sign him to a contract that will have him training with the Brooks Beasts and coach Danny Mackey in Seattle, Washington. His goal is to make it to the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials. You’ll hear more about how that deal came to be, his goals and expectations for himself as well as the background story on when he got his start in running on the competitive Connecticut high school scene and then what led him to pick up a camera to start documenting it all to the masses. "I definitely felt very different from everyone else and that's definitely, to be honest, a huge reason why I don't really like cross country as much as track. I do feel like there are less people I can relate to or I can even talk to some people about some things I'm experiencing or feeling. I know when I was being recruited at Penn, there was a specific middle distance group that was a mix between 400-800-milers. Those people didn't necessarily run cross country. I was excited about coming into a group like that. When the coaches changed a bit, now I was a distance runner. I was running cross country and I was the only individual of color. I think that was a very different experience. To anyone who is listening, who is one of very few or maybe the only person of color on their team, you're supposed to be in that space. Just being in that space is doing a lot for not only you but the Black community at large. You're immersing people in your experiences and perspectives, even if you're not saying that much or anything about being Black. It's felt by everybody. Your presence is definitely felt and you're making an impact by doing that. I've had some really great people in my circle outside of just my immediate training group that did a good job of telling me, "You're supposed to be here. You can do well here." I think that helped me have that degree of success that I had in cross country and prepared me well for track." ------ Nia Akins joins Dana Giordano just days after signing a professional contract to run for the Brooks Beasts training group in Seattle, Washington. She just wrapped up an accomplished career at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a two-time NCAA runner-up in the 800 meters and boasts a 2:00.71 indoor personal best in the event. She also graduated with a degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. In this episode, they discuss her decision to turn pro amid a global pandemic, the accomplished final goals wiped away due to COVID-19, balancing her coursework at the No. 1 nursing school in the country, her conversations regarding the Black Lives Matter movement and what her hope is for society and sport moving forward. In May, she opened up about an incident where a man yelled racial slurs at her while she was working out. Chris Chavez and Ryan Welsh post up at the Brooks Hyperion House at Switchyards in downtown Atlanta to test out a new podcast concept – talking to strangers to get to know their running story. For this first episode, we sat down and got to meet some of Brooks' Hometown Heroes. They're sub-elite runners who hold full-time jobs and still manage to find the time to run fast. You'll be surprised at who we meet. We knew nothing about these people beforehand. It was blind speed dating of sorts. Garrett Heath of the Brooks Beasts (27-minute mark) happened to be working at the lounge and so we got his thoughts on being in town for the trials, what it's like to compete for an Olympic team spot and some of his own predictions for the race. Teresa McWalters (41-minute mark) is a four-time U.S. Olympic trials qualifier with a newfound perspective on running after an injury in this buildup. Kelly Calway (51-minute mark) is a U.S. Army officer who ran at NC State. She is a combat veteran with two deployments under her belt. Because of her work and service for this country, running has taken place in a wide variety of places. Elizabeth Gregory and Holly Clarke (1 hour, 8-minute mark) share their experience as teammates on the Impala Racing Team, who qualified together. ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag | instagram.com/citiusmag | facebook.com/citiusmag ✩ Connect with Chris via Email: chris@citiusmag.com | twitter.com/ChrisChavez | instagram.com/chris_j_chavez

“Anybody that's in this industry, especially somebody that was in my former position, you sit around all the time and complain about what's wrong with track and field. I'm one of the biggest talkers when it comes to that, I always complain about what's wrong. And I feel like I have a chance to potentially work towards one piece of the solution, which is an events series in the U.S., after USAs, not only where athletes can make money, but we're doing things differently, and it's more entertainment. We're going to do our best. It's exciting—very exciting.” Excited to share a conversation I recorded in late September with Jesse Williams, who was the head of sports marketing at Brooks for 13 years, where he oversaw the marketing and business side of the such initiatives as Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, the Brooks Beasts, the Brooks PR Invitational, and other athlete programs. Williams left Brooks in 2017 and took a year off from work to figure out his next move, and at the end of last year he launched Sound Running, a company which offers training programs, coaching, and events for runners of ALL ability levels. He's particularly excited about next summer's Sound Running Tour, a series of track meets in southern California designed to create competitive domestic racing opportunities for athletes seeking Olympic tune-ups and personal bests, all while helping push the sport forward—which is something that it desperately needs right now. Williams has had interesting career trajectory: from studying exercise physiology and English as undergrad, to becoming a kindergarten teacher as a 22-year-old, going back to grad school for a degree in biomechanics, to then working his way up the chain at Brooks to become head of sports marketing. We got into all that and a lot more over the course of this 90-minute conversation, including quite a bit of discussion about the marketing side of the sport, what excites him and what worries him about it right now, how brands can better use their athletes, and a lot more. Hi Everyone! You are listening to episode 18 of the Chasing Bravery Podcast. Today I am speaking with the lovely Katie Mackey, who just got back from World Indoor Track and Field championships, where she represented the United States in the 3000 meters. Katie is not only speedy- she is also kind, open, funny, and real, and it was such a pleasure to speak with her about all things running and life. Katie is someone who wears her heart on her sleeve, and while she will say this is a quality she has had to learn how to moderate and control on the track- it makes her so relatable and refreshing to the broader running community. Katie is a prime example of someone who has had their heart broken by this sport of running, yet has found a way to turn that heartbreak into an opportunity to grow and come back stronger than ever – which is pretty brave if I do say so myself. Katie and I chat about her unique training environment with the Brooks Beasts, and what it is like to have her husband as a coach. I must say that I had my boyfriend laughing after I recorded with Katie, because he could totally relate to being on the other side of some of the fiery moments she speaks of with me as an athlete. It was great to hear that even professional athletes whose coaches are their significant others (a dynamic we are seeing more and more of) sometimes struggle to maintain the balance within their own relationships, and I thought that Katie provided some great insight into how she and her husband Danny make it work. Before we get to the episode I want to give a little disclaimer that I was not the best podcast host during this episode. My hosting skills are novice at best on a good day, but today I was particularly spacey and tired after a big workout and being a bit under the weather. We could have tried to super edit up this episode, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this is real life, and the important thing is getting this awesome, real conversation I had with Katie out to you all. Please check the show notes of this episode for links on how to follow Katie on Social Media, read her blog, and check out her awesome summer camp! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chasing-bravery/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chasing-bravery/support
