There’s always been something aspirational about the term “smart home.” It was coined by a residential builder association here in the U.S. back in the mid-’80s, long before the inventions we now think of as hallmarks of the smart home. Today, 42% of American households with internet own at least one smart home device, according to the market research firm Parks Associates. In her new book, “Threshold: How Smart Homes Change Us Inside and Out,” Heather Suzanne Woods of Kansas State University asks whether that's a good thing.

In our latest Electronic Specifier Insights podcast we spoke to Elizabeth Parks, President and CMO, Parks Associates all about Insights into a female- and family-owned market research and consulting firm.
After taking its first dip into sports streaming last year, Apple is now immersing itself. The tech giant kicked off a 10-year partnership with Major League Soccer (MLS) with the launch of Season Pass on Apple TV+. “This is very important for us. It is one of the key things we are doing this year and for the next 10 years. We're now part of a family together,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said during a presentation for MLS players, owners and media at Apple Park. The Apple launch comes after a transformative year for sports and streaming services. The NFL further embraced streaming last year as Prime Video carried “Thursday Night Football,” and Major League Baseball partnered with Apple TV and Peacock to stream games. The NFL also reached an agreement with Google's YouTube TV to carry the “Sunday Ticket” package beginning next season. Tech companies and broadcast outlets likewise see the value of live sports programming. According to a recent report by Parks Associates, revenue from sports streaming subscription packages is expected to increase 73% to $22.6 billion in 2027 after generating $13.1 billion last year. In the era of cord-cutting, tech companies, advertisers and sports leagues are also finding that younger viewers continue to migrate toward streaming and are watching for extended periods. According to Amazon tracking data, 22% of “Thursday Night Football” viewers on Prime Video were in the coveted 18-34 age demographic, compared with 14% of viewers watching NFL games on linear networks. The average viewing time for “Thursday Night” games was 85 minutes — nine minutes longer than games not on Prime. Apple teaming with MLS makes sense for both parties. Various studies have found that soccer fans are more likely to watch sports on streaming devices or recorded TV. MLS will receive at least $250 million per season from Apple. The league averaged $90 million per season under its previous eight-year agreements with Fox, ESPN and Univision. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
On this week's podcast, Joe Whitaker joins us from St. Louis, MO, where, for the past week or so, he has been the VP of business development for Origin Acoustics. Prior to accepting this new role, Joe was president of Thoughtful Integrations, a custom installation firm with locations in Dallas and St. Louis. However, as we learned on my very first podcast back in April 2020, Joe is no stranger to working with Origin, having assisted with product development as a consultant. This is not the first time a custom integrator has gone to work for a manufacturer, and it won't be the last. But while the news is still relatively fresh, I thought it would be interesting to learn more about Joe's career move and find out what he can tell us about his future projects at Origin. Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus. Where Are the Women in the Streaming Media Industry? As (hopefully) many readers will know Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen, Tim Siglin, and I have been strong vocal supporters of Women in Streaming Media and more broadly of our ‘sisters-in-streaming' for many years. In programming conference sessions and panel discussions, webinars, and more we always proactively try hard to reach out to those women we know in the industry to ensure there is frequent representation for women in public events. Photo above: Speakers on the "Future of Monetization" panel at Streaming Media West Connect earlier this month. Top row, L to R: Nadine Krefetz, Consultant, Reality Software and Contributing Editor, Streaming Media; Damian Pelliccione, Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Revry TV; Elizabeth Parks, President, Parks Associates. Middle row, L to R: Mike Woods, SVP - Ad Products, Amagi; Daniel Schneider, SVP, Revenue, Cinedigm; Gene Pao, Senior Vice President, Digital Enterprises, Shout! Factory. Bottom: Chris Yates, General Manager, Redbox On Demand We attended the launch of Women in Streaming Media at IBC in 2018 as invitees of Alicia Pritchett, Diane Strutner, and Peggy Dau (who drive the initiative). We have always held one of two guest seats for them in SMAdvancedForum.com—our monthly catchup with ‘characters' from the industry, and we traditionally try to hand over the reins of the show to an all-woman crew specifically for International Women's Day each March. When interviewing for articles, we keep our ears out for opportunities for womansplaining to take the priority over mansplaining, and (unknown to you all) we have protocols for keeping an eye out for when women are getting squeezed out in panel discussions where we are moderators, to ensure their voices are heard. And if you think it is bad across the streaming sector as a whole, once you dive into the CDN sub-sector, the situation is seriously dire. In fact, no event has even been more painful for me to programme than the Content Delivery Summit, the latest iteration of which ran earlier this month. Just look at the agenda. Great topics with really engaging speakers, and a dense day of exciting engagement across the sector. But we had only two women on the program—kudos Elsa Pine from EdgeConnex and Nino Doijashvili from Tulix). On publication of the agenda, this issue was raised directly with me by both Ian Wagdin from the BBC (whose PR department raised it on a ‘non-discrimination' concern) and by active support of Vanessa Vigar, who is a member of Women in Streaming Media and has pointed out the issue in events beyond Streaming Media and SMAF. And absolutely rightly so. But I had to clarify the back story, which I want to share a little with you all here. We initially worked with sponsors to place their participants. Elsa has been a frequent panelist at CDS, and so she and her company were very much involved from the outset of this event. And while a couple of the other sponsors initially did put forward women speakers, in both cases they switched them out for male representatives before the programme was finalised. We don't really have much control over who sponsors put forward to speak, so at that stage we took that on the chin, and decided to focus on the panels and non-sponsor placements in the event. So we put out the call for speakers in August/September, and we had about 3 dozen responses. The respondents were 100% from men. Not a single woman replied—and that call was distributed on StreamingMedia.com and its associated feeds with no (known of) bias. This is the first time that has happened, and it ties up strongly with evidence I have seen in SMAdvancedForum (SMAF) too; while up until this summer we have never had any issue reaching out for and finding f...

With the decline of pay-TV, traditional home services bundles have steadily declined over the past seven years. As a result, the penetration of stand-alone internet service is increasing, jumping from 34% in 2017 to 42% in 2021. Service providers have relied on bundles to attract new subscribers, increase consumer loyalty (and thus lifetime value), and differentiate from competitors. With bundling in decline, service providers turn to new value-added services to play these critical roles. In this Fiber for Breakfast, Jennifer Kent, Ph.D., Vice President of Research at Parks Associates, will discuss shifting broadband buying behaviors, the impact on service revenues, and opportunities for service providers to offer new service types to attract and retain customers.

Smart home technology is one of the fastest growing industries, thanks in part to devices and services such as Nest, Ecobee, Google Home, Amazon Echo and Apple. Research from Parks Associates from its Q4 2019 survey of 10,000 broadband households found that over 41% of US broadband households now own a smart home device, a 20% growth rate from one year ago. With all this connectivity in the home and enablement to better monitor, manage and control appliances, lighting and security that it brings to the consumer, what role does all of this ability bring to the grid? Utilities are forging ahead with bold efforts targeted at grid modernization, much of which focuses on greater situational awareness and action. In the connected home, consumers are also focusing not only on awareness, but conditional actions based on comfort, convenience and logical actions. Are we at the nexus of both of these innovations, can the grid benefit and support the smart home and vice versa? Denise Ernst, Vice President of Parks Associates, discussed all this with EnerNex host Ron Chebra live from DistribuTECH 2020 in San Antonio.

Parks Associates reported in their December 2018 study that 13% of U.S. households have already fired their traditional pay television providers. As explained by Anselmo Pilla, Senior Director of Marketing of Pixelworks, FlexVU is an ad-hoc consortium of companies with a goal of educating consumers as to how to use over-the-top and over-the-air television services to create an effective substitute for the typical pay television line-up. In this episode, Marcello Sukhdeo talks about the Samsung Galaxy Note8, also, Siri has been given an update and will sound more natural in iOS 11, and Apple TV is losing ground to Roku and Amazon streaming devices. Show Notes: Samsung has announced the release of the Galaxy Note8. The Note8 is the successor of the Galaxy Note7, which was recalled because of defective batteries that caused fire. The new phone comes with a dual-lens camera, animated messages, and expanded note-taking. The Note8 offers significant improvements over the last Note and has “infinity display”. This display is already in the S8 which makes the screen size bigger by reducing the bezel, surrounding the display. So, the Note 8’s screen will be bigger than the Note7 without feeling bigger due to the reduced bezel. With the Galaxy Note8, the new App Pair feature lets you create a custom button on the Edge panel that will let you launch two apps in multi window mode. So you can watch a video while messaging your friends, or dial into a conference call with the number and agenda right in front of you. This new device is among the most expensive smartphones, starting at about $1,299. The iPhone 7 for example, starts at about $899 and the S8 at $1,034.99. Siri With iOS 11 coming in the next few weeks, Apple has released a research paper giving details of the methods that they are using to make Siri sound more natural, with the help of machine learning. For iOS 11, the engineers at Apple worked with a new female voice actor to record 20 hours of speech in US English and generate between 1 and 2 million audio segments, which were then used to train a deep learning system. The team noted in its paper that test subjects greatly preferred the new version over the old one found in iOS 9 from dating back from 2015. Apple TV losing ground Parks Associates sampled 10,000 homes in the US which had at least one streaming player. In their findings, they noted that Roku jumped year-over-year from 32 per cent to 37 per cent, which is a foothold that none of its competitors can quite match. But Amazon is also gaining ground and moved up from 16 per cent to 24 per cent. In the case of Apple, it fell year-over-year from 19 per cent to 15 per cent marketshare. Consumers seem to be favouring the aggressively priced streaming sticks and boxes from Roku and Amazon over the comparatively more expensive Apple TV.
