Moonlight Brewing co-owners Brian Hunt and Patrick Rue join Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Brian is the founder of Moonlight Brewing and Patrick Rue is now a co-owner. Patrick is the former owner of “Bruery” in Orange County which he sold. After opening a Moonlight Czech Pils Reality Czech, we hear their stories. Patrick started brewing in 1992 and just kept at it. He started in a barn near the airport then to Graton 10 years later then to Coffey Lane and has been there since then. It's walking distance for lucky residents of Santa Rosa. Lagunitas bought 50% of Moonlight, then Heineken bought Lagunitas. Now Moonlight is back local with Patrick Rue. Brian gets to tell the story of looking for just the right partner for a long time. Patrick has been a fan of Moonlight since drinking Death and Taxes in college. He admires that they have a steady identity and do not have to chase trends. Patrick opened a Brewery in Southern California and he ditched law school to operate it then sold it to some investors. He tried his hand at wine, his winery is called Erosion. They also brew beer and they make ice cream too. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Patrick and Brian served together in the California Craft Brewers Association which is how they got to know each other. Brian had a great reputation that inspired Patrick. For a lot of people, including Harry and Patrick, Death and Taxes was popular when they were students. The Importance of Death and Taxes Death and Taxes is Moonlight Brewing's signature brew. Brian was working for a brewery in Napa and he thought of a beer that he wanted which didn't exist. Today we are used to a lot of choices but back then, he had to make it. It's something that works well in hot weather. It is the epitome of the San Francisco style black lager. He made up that term, because his friends in Europe are used to naming beer styles after cities. Even if that's not a habit in America, it makes sense to him. It is designed for when it's 90 degress outside. “To me a hop is an accent, it's not a reason to exist…” Get tickets for the Freshtival 2022 on eventbrite dot com. The Freshtival is back on June 25, 2022, at Sonoma Mountain Village. Come for 160 different beers from over 80 breweries from Portland to San Diego. All of the beer poured in this event will be less than 7 days old. For details visit Hen house brewing dot com slash freshtival Patrick explains how he likes to try to bring unusual flavors into beer, which is unlike what Moonlight does. He likes to use ingredients, yeast strains and spices that don't usually appear in beer. They have plans to let some Moonlight beer mature in oak barrels for 6 to 12 months. Reality Czech is a style from Pilsen, in western Czechia. They also have Dim Lights, a gently smoked lager. It took some trial and error to get the perfect smoked malts. Patrick's brand Erosion wine takes some Muscat Canelli (a cool climate aromatic wine) and flavors it with hops, three different ways.

Last week, word got out that Patrick Rue, the founder of The Bruery in Orange County California, and more recently the founder and operator of Erosion Wines in Napa had acquired a 50 percent stake in Moonlight Brewery, a beloved northern California brewery founded 30 years ago by Brian Hunt.  Moonlight is known for its beers like Death & Taxes and Reality Czech and had been half owned by Lagunitas via Heineken for the past six years.  I first learned of the news via Beer by BART, a great site run by Gail Ann Williams and Steve Shapiro. If you're not already following them on social media, rectify that quickly.  A subsequent press release release from the brewery noted that “Patrick will serve in an advisory capacity and will direct an oak barrel-aging beer program that enhances the integrity and heritage of Moonlight.”  It continued by saying that under the Heineken co-ownership Moonlight "packaging shifted from exclusively draft to additionally offering beers in cans, and both production and distribution have grown all while keeping sales limited to Northern California.  The new ownership strengthens Moonlight's dedication to remaining locally owned. This will allow for patient growth, greater availability of its coveted beers to its fans and wholesale partners, while maintaining the deliciousness and highest quality for which Moonlight is so well known.” Press release aside, in this episode we hear from the owners directly.  This Episode is sponsored by:Cigar City Brewing Co.Check out Fancy Papers from Cigar City Brewing. With aromas of freshly cut grass and tangerine along with white wine grape and bread-like aromas, this Hazy IPA has flavors of guava, melon, and lime leaf. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy bridges the gap between wine and beer. Back on the show is Jake Endres from Crooked Run Brewing in Sterling, VA; Patrick Rue from Erosion Wine in Napa Valley, CA; and long-time Beer Sessions Radio favorite, BR Rolya.Patrick kicks off the show with an introduction to Erosion Wine. With prior training as a Master Cicerone, Patrick brings craft beer methods to winemaking and explains the differences he witnessed between the beer and wine worlds. Back East in Virginia, Jake walks us through his mixed fermentation beers that are a part of Crooked Run’s Native Culture series, which aims to challenge people’s ideas of what beer can taste like. BR agrees that mixed fermentation opens the range of flavors you can get, and explains how the language to describe beer and wine flavors has evolved through time. Then, Jimmy poses a hot take about wine drinkers versus craft beer drinkers, and the gang walks us through their favorite food pairings. Even after diligent training, Patrick still maintains a lax approach to food pairings, and BR concludes that beer is much more forgiving than wine when looking for the right food-drink match. Drinks list:Druplet from Crooked Run BrewingSecret Handshake from Erosion WineryDe Ranke, Cantillon BreweryPhoto Courtesy of Erosion Wine.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Season 3, Episode 38 – This week, we’re on the floor of the expo at the California Craft Beer Summit in Sacramento, California, talking to some rad beer industry peeps. This week’s post was written in collaboration with the lovely Yvonne England.  Hey y’all! Guess that we did?! We went to Sacramento! (Have you watched our road trip video yet?) Make Beer Clear Again… This week, we went to the California Craft Beer Summit and had the opportunity to talk to a bunch of amazing beer people on the floor of the event. There were so many great breweries and beer peeps in attendance. We couldn’t talk to them all, but we know you’ll love the folks we did get! First on the list was Miss Franny FullPint, of The Full Pint. She’s also the Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Brewers Guild (Get. It. Girl!). She’s badass. Just know that. Then we dropped acid…knowledge with Jeffers Richardson, of Firestone Walker Barrelworks, and learned what the hell Titratable Acidity is. Yeah, that’s a thing, and Jeffers explains it. We then interviewed Brandon Hernández, Chief Marketing Officer at Societe Brewing Company and Editor at Large of West Coaster Magazine, not to be confused with West Coasters Magazine, the best roller coaster review you’ll ever read! Patrick Rue of The Bruery and Henry Nguyen of Monkish Brewing Company Next you hear us with Patrick Rue, from The Bruery. Our SoCal duders will know this fine gentleman from his tiny little start-up in the OC. Just kidding! It’s one of the fastest growing breweries around…AND our own Matt Becker used to brew there!  Natalie Cilurzo, President of Russian River Brewing Company, also graced us with an interview. It was so dope! She was dope! Get ready for dopeness! (b-t dubs, the Russian River sour pilsner that was on tap at the festival was DOPE. SO. MUCH. DOPENESS.) Finally, we interviewed the wonderfully brilliant and knowledgable Julia Herz, of the Brewers Association. Julia knows her shit when it comes to the brewing industry, and also knows a thing or two about pairing beer with food. She even wrote a book about it! Beer Geeks! We had a blast at the California Craft Beer Summit. Like, for real. The expo was great and the fest on Saturday was well run with many spectacular California breweries pouring their brews. It was also really cool being literally down the street from the California State Capitol, drinking California craft brews! It was a fun road trip, followed by fun times with awesome beer people. We hope you enjoy these interviews as much as we did. We lived. We learned. We talked beer. We drank beer! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT, CALIFORNIA. Season 1, Episode 23 - This week, a Duck Duck Gooze side-by-side, and some, er, interesting homebrew from Nagel. Welcome to November. It’s that special time of year when we get together with our families, roast birds in the oven, and drink barrel-aged beer to keep warm in the brisk winter weather. On the show this week, we’re cracking open two beers from The Lost Abbey called Duck Duck Gooze. You may have heard of it. It’s an excellent sour that many beer geeks consider to be a “whalez, bro”. No hype here. It’s fantastic. The Lost Abbey – Duck Duck Gooze 2009 & 2013. Matt really knocked it out of the park for this episode by providing not only one, but two variants of the DDG, one from 2009, and one from the most current 2013 release, which was provided to him by his super-rad boss, Patrick Rue. So, thanks Matt…and Pat! We break away from the drinking for a bit to discuss the recent IPA showdown at Vendome Wine & Spirits in Toluca Lake, CA. The results may surprise you… Greg brought two homebrews for us to try this week, one made with sourdough yeast (yes, really), and the other, a Tart Of Darkness clone, which was a More Beer homebrew kit. We start with his Tart of Darkness clone. The beer itself turned out OK, but this homebrew teaches us that making a sour beer that’s on the level of The Bruery’s Tart of Darkness takes a lot more time and work that just adding bacteria to wort. Next, we try Greg’s collaboration beer that he made with OC Baking Company. Greg did a five day sour mash for this beer and fermented it with sourdough bread yeast from OC Baking Company. The beer really didn’t turn out well–we’re not gonna lie. Not all experiments turn out well. Sorry, Greg, but thanks for the beer!  We mentioned The Festival on the show, which is a badass beer festival hosted by Shelton Brothers. Tickets are still available. It’s going to be epic… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT! Subscribe to the show: RSS iTunes – While you’re there, give a review of the podcast!
