Peter and the Starcatcher, by the American writer Rick Elice (Jersey Boys, Water for Elephants), is a Tony Award-winning play inspired by J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan stories. It reveals how Peter, the Lost Boys, and Captain Hook came to find themselves in Neverland, and it puts a new character named Molly at the centre of the action. Also, the big sound of a cappella Sacred Harp singing will ring out in an Australian theatre this month in a new play called The Hall, and we pay tribute to our recent guest Roz Hervey, who has died. Roz was a celebrated dancer, choreographer, director and, most recently, Creative Producer at Restless Dance Theatre.

Why those greatest at risk may not get the new COVID vaccine. New book “Autobiography of a Sea Creature: Healing the Trauma of Infant Surgery.” Sacramento Theatre Company's “Peter and the Starcatcher.” New COVID Vaccine Lacks Outreach This month, the FDA approved a new COVID vaccine. And this latest vaccine is one the FDA hopes will be updated annually, just like the flu shot. The problem is that those getting vaccinated have waned. According to the CDC, while roughly 70% of those 5 years and older in the U.S. completed the original vaccine, that dropped to 17% for the bivalent shot in 2022. And there is concern that a majority of people will skip this latest COVID vaccine, especially those who need it the most. Science journalist Amy Maxmen shares her reporting on the new COVID vaccine, and why those at greatest risk may not get it. Autobiography on Healing from Infant Surgery Up until 1986, it was believed infants weren't developed enough to feel or remember pain, and it was common practice to perform neonatal surgery without anesthesia. But the medical community was gravely wrong, and reversed course in 1987. Although unable to speak at the time, or consciously remember, there is growing awareness that trauma within the body can have a profound impact on your life. Wendy Williams has lived that journey and discusses her new book “Autobiography of a Sea Creature: Healing the Trauma of Infant Surgery.”  Sacramento Theatre Company ‘Peter and the Starcatcher' The Sacramento Theatre Company is opening its season with a youth production of "Peter and the Starcatcher." This production is the precursor to Peter Pan and Captain Hook and is performed by students from 4th grade through high school. Joining Insight are 11th grade actor Asher Wilson, Director William Schmidt and Miranda Lawson, Education Manager at the Sacramento Theatre Company.

PETER AND THE STAR CATCHER June 2nd - 11th The Village Players Theatre "A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's best-selling novels, Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old tale of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a Peter Pan). From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair...and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love." Show Notes Drama Teacher Academy Peter and the Starcatcher Episode Transcript Welcome to the Drama Teacher Podcast brought to you by Theatrefolk – the Drama Teacher Resource Company. I'm Lindsay Price. Hello! I hope you're well. Thanks for listening! This is Episode 191 and you can find any links to this episode in the show notes which are at Theatrefolk.com/episode191. Okay. Where do you start with a play? How do you come up with a vision? How do you take that vision and turn it into character or light or sound or set or costuming? How do you execute on your vision? If you are one of the hundreds of schools putting on Peter and the Starcatcher this year, sit back and relax. This podcast is for you. I'm talking to the amazing Kerry Hishon – a Theatrefolk blogger extraordinaire. She's going to talk about her experience directing the show from soup to nuts which – if Wikipedia is to be believed – is derived from the description of a full dinner – from the beginning, soup, to after dessert, nuts. Not bad, eh? Learn something new today. Also, Wikipedia tells me that a similar Latin phrase is “from egg to apple” after a typical Roman meal. See, you didn't think you were going to listen in and learn something about words. Have I ever mentioned I love words? Uh, enough about me. Okay, let's get to it. LINDSAY: Hello everybody! I am speaking with Kerry Hishon. Hello, Kerry! KERRY: Hello! LINDSAY: Now, if you are a regular Theatrefolk follower – which you are, of course – Kerry is our blogger with the moistest. Our blog queen here at Theatrefolk recently and our blog is – I'm going to say it – it's pretty awesome these days and it's all thanks to Kerry. So, there you go, Kerry. I'm publicly giving you props. KERRY: Amazing! Thank you so much! It's so much fun! I love doing it and now you can all hear what I sound like, too. LINDSAY: Oh, now there's a voice! Now there's a voice with the words which is really funny because I think that the way that you write is very much how you talk. I can totally hear your voice when I read your stuff. KERRY: It really is. I very much write in my own voice so it's a lot of stream of consciousness and I go back and read it and I'm like, “Wow! That's a lot of run-on sentences!” LINDSAY: I may cut out one or two exclamation points, too. KERRY: I do that a lot! I write and I talk in exclamation points. We all have our crosses to bear – that's mine. LINDSAY: That's right. If that's yours – too many exclamation points – I think that's a pretty good run. KERRY: Yeah, I'll take it. LINDSAY: So, we are talking, we're doing sort of a production case study again here today. I really enjoy these where we sort of get in depth with someone who has done a show and this one I know everyone's going to be interested in and that is Peter and the Starcatcher. KERRY: Woohoo! Oh, my gosh, it was crazy! Craziness – just craziness. LINDSAY: All right. Well, let's get into it! KERRY: Yes! LINDSAY: This is something that is the high school show – or going to be – for 2017. I'm really interested to sort of get into your approach and what you did with it. Was it part of your theatre season? Or did you have a hand in choosing it? Did you put your hand up and said, “I would like to direct this”? KERRY: Yeah, it was the choice of our season. Just to go back for a second, give a bit of context, I work for Original Kids Theatre Company in London, Ontario which is a youth theatre company with a membership of over 300 kids and we produce over 20 shows a year.

Celia Keenan-Bolger, a native of Detroit, Michigan, has made a very impressive mark in the Broadway community. A Tony nominee beloved for her talent, kindness and political activism, Celia has moved effortlessly between musicals and straight plays. She burst onto the scene with her role in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."  Shortly thereafter she captivated audiences as Laura in "The Glass Menagerie," showed her comedic genius in "Peter and the Starcatcher," and moved us to tears when she starred in "Les Miserables" (a childhood dream). In this intimate episode Celia discusses how she handles the highs and lows that inevitably come along with a life in the theater.  Married to actor John Ellison Conlee, Celia shares what it's like for two actors in a marriage and she opens up about the joys and surprises of parenthood.  Celia also touches on her early years -- including her time with Sutton Foster in the children's theatrical troupe "The Peter Pan Players."  Listeners will feel closer to -- and more in awe of -- this deeply talented, and equally kind, award-winning actress.
