FTP Theater Hour: USU play reading reviews -- Shrek 2 cast -- The Scarlet Pimpernel
What do you get when you mix Broadway royalty with sci-fi cloning, environmental theater, and a dash of boogie-woogie piano? A wildly entertaining conversation with the legendary Terrence Mann. From his earliest days growing up in a musical household to helping launch the North Carolina Theatre, Terry's journey is packed with passion, persistence, and a whole lot of timing. He shares the story behind how he actually got cast in Cats (it involves London and a royal connection), and how he practically willed his way into Les Misérables after being told multiple times they didn't want to see him. His advice for young performers? “Have no fear, there are no wrong choices, and be specific”—words he lives by and teaches. Now back on stage in Broadway's The Great Gatsby as Meyer Wolfsheim, Terrence opens up about what it feels like to return to the theater after years in “Foundation land,” filming Apple TV's epic sci-fi series. We also dive into his work as a director, educator, and his longtime love for North Carolina's historic Lost Colony production. And yes, we play a game of Plot in 60 Seconds, get a surprise cameo from iOS balloons, and bond over the beautiful chaos of 1980s New York auditions. This episode is packed with decades of wisdom and a whole lot of heart. Terrence Mann is a three-time Tony nominee best known for originating iconic roles such as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Javert in Les Misérables, and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. His Broadway credits also include Pippin, Tuck Everlasting, The Addams Family, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Rags. On screen, he's appeared in Sense8, all four Critters films, and currently stars as Brother Dusk in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation. He's also an accomplished director, educator, and co-founder of Triple Arts, a musical theater training program. “The Greatest Batman Analogues” started as a companion to our “Greatest Superman Analogues” episode but it quickly grew into a conversation about how powerful and impactful a Batman could or should be. Many Twitter dorks including us have tried to put real world morality on this particular comic book character given our frankly natural suspicion and disdain for billionaires. It isn't actually clear that the original creators of Batman wanted his wealth to be a key part of his badassery in any way besides gadgets and free time. Almost all of the original comic book men of action were rich. Zorro, The Phantom, The Green Hornet, hell The Scarlet Pimpernel! But those guys aren't Batman. In interrogating what exactly constitutes a Batman analogue maybe we can recontextualize the character. Maybe we can find out what areas his “sons” can investigate to carve out their own place in the pantheon of awesome “regular humans” who fight alongside the super gods. Follow us! Lux Radio Theater "The Scarlet Pimpernel" December 12, 1938 CBS starring Leslie Howard and Olivia De Haviland
The episode features an interview with Adam Mangana and Dan Sturdevant of Optima Online Academy, the world's first all-VR school. Optima aims to merge classical education focused on the liberal arts and humanities with cutting-edge virtual reality technology. The school teaches a classical curriculum based on great books and stories to prepare students to be their most human in an age of AI. The founders argue that VR is not bleeding-edge tech but rather the inevitable evolution of technology, just as books were initially criticized yet ultimately transformed learning.A key challenge Optima faces is building school culture and overcoming loneliness in a virtual environment. They use techniques like virtual scavenger hunts based on classics like The Scarlet Pimpernel, designing natural social spaces, and activities drawn from canonical stories to foster student connection. Specific learning activities highlighted include Latin classes to prepare for computer science, the concept of VR as a "memory palace," and equity of access to high-quality education.Overall, Optima seeks to leverage the immersive properties of VR to ground students in classical education and culture. As the internet transforms into three dimensions, the school aims to maintain the best of humanities-based learning while expanding access through virtual technology. Dan and Adam argue this fusion will optimize preparation for the future of learning and human-AI collaboration.---Guest Bios:Dan SturdevantUpon graduation from Wheaton College (IL), Dr. Sturdevant moved to Charlotte, NC to teach at Providence Day School. Within a few years he married Christa (also Dr. Sturdevant) and they moved to Raleigh, where he continued teaching and earned a Duke masters focused on skills for student success. He later earned a UNC doctorate in Educational Leadership, completing a dissertation evaluating NC charter schools' efficiency.Dr. Sturdevant believes in experiential education, student success and healthy school cultures. He has over a decade of classroom experience leading schools at all levels. He firmly believes in Optima Academy Online's mission to shape the next generation with its classically aligned, virtual reality education.Outside of school, the Drs. Sturdevant have two wonderful daughters and enjoy spending time together outside, hiking, biking, and exploring new places.Adam ManganaAdam Mangana is a respected figure in education, known for integrating virtual reality into the classroom. As Founder of Optima Ed, he has created VR curriculum solutions catering to modern learners.Previously, Adam served as Head of School at Benedict Day, where he established the first-ever VR Lab in the Pine Belt.
