Hacking Car Anti-collision Systems, August 28, 2016 A group of researchers presenting at this month’s Def Con hacker conference showed how they were able to trick Tesla's sophisticated anti-collision sensors to make a car hit an object it would normally detect in its path. Before we start on the cars – you went to Def Con this year Mike – how was it? So let’s get to the cars now – who did this research? The group consisted of Chen Yan, a PhD student at Zhejiang University, Jianhao Liu, a senior security consultant at Qihoo 360, and Wenyuan Xu, a professor at Zhejiang University and The University of South Carolina. So can you give a quicker overview of what they did? They discovered methods for "quieting" sensors to diminish or hide obstacles in a car's path, "spoofing" them to make an object appear farther or closer than it actually is, and jamming, which, Yan said, renders the sensor useless as it's "overwhelmed by noise." Could this be done now? I mean, if someone is driving a Tesla or any other car with this kind of sensor technology, should they be concerned? It's important to note that the demonstration was a proof-of-concept that did not mimic real-world conditions today. Researchers were working on cars that were usually stationary with what was sometimes very expensive equipment. They noted that the "sky wasn't falling." But the experiment suggests that theoretically, a few years from now, somebody could make a device that could jam certain sensors in a nearby car. Can you talk about these sensors a little more? There are a number of sensors on a Tesla Model S that are used for a variety of functions. It has radar to detect objects in front of it, GPS for location tracking, and cameras to detect speed limit signs and lane markings, for example. As the talk showed, many of these things can be tricked by a determined attacker. Is it just Tesla people need to be concerned about? Much of their presentation focused on the Tesla Model S, but they also successfully jammed sensors on cars from Audi, Volkswagen, and Ford. So what kinds of systems were they jamming? Cars with ultrasonic sensors Cars with parking assistance The Tesla Model S with self-parking and summon Let’s talk a little more about what they were able to demonstrate. In a video demonstrating an attack, the researchers jammed sensors in the rear of the Model S, so the car did not know it was about to hit a person standing behind it. In another, they "spoofed" its Autopilot to trick it into thinking it would drive into something that was not actually there. You mentioned they talked about using lasers – can you give any details? They also used off-the-shelf lasers to defeat the onboard cameras, and, in one of the most low-tech demonstrations, they wrapped objects up in cheap black foam that rendered them invisible to the car's sensors. What kind of feedback did they get from the manufacturers? Yan said after the talk that Tesla reacted positively when they disclosed their research, and it was researching ways to mitigate these types of attacks. "They appreciated our work and are looking into this issue," he said. So, in summary what are the auto makers concerned about after this presentation? Realistic issues of automotive sensor security Big threat to autonomous vehicles (present and future) Attacks on ultrasonic sensors Attacks on Millimeter Wave (MMW) Radars Attacks on cameras Attacks on self-driving cars Where can people get the full Deaf Con presentation? It's available at Def Con’s website https://media.defcon.org/DEF%20CON%2024/DEF%20CON%2024%20presentations/DEFCON-24-Liu-Yan-Xu-Can-You-Trust-Autonomous-Vehicles.pdf Reference: http://www.businessinsider.com/defcon-tesla-jamming-spoofing-autopilot-2016-8

In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and editor of Zacks International Trader newsletter, as they discuss which are the best Chinese stocks for 2016. John has been investing in Chinese stocks in the International Trader for several years so he’s ridden the ups and downs in that market. He thinks there’s opportunities to get into some Chinese stocks in the new year, but he warns that investors have to be careful about the short sellers, which can decimate some of the small market cap names. He advises investors to stay in the biggest names like Baidu (BIDU), Ctrip.com (CTRP), and Trina Solar (TSL). Investors also have to be aware of the dangers of these companies going private, as Qihoo (QIHU), a Chinese internet company, just announced. Qihoo traded as high as $124 a share in 2014 before plunging in 2015. But it is going private at just $77 a share, which would be a significant loss for a shareholder who bought at the peak. Tracey hasn’t invested in Chinese stocks, either in her personal portfolio or in her Zacks services, including Value Investor, for several years after getting burned a couple of years ago in some of the fraudulent reverse merger stocks. Is she letting her past experiences taint her views? If she had to invest, she shares two Chinese stocks she would be buying for 2016 if she were going to buy Chinese stocks. Tracey and John also discuss Alibaba’s (BABA) mysterious recent acquisition of a Hong Kong English-language newspaper and magazines for $260 million. Tracey dislikes the deal because it is outside of Alibaba’s core business expertise but John thinks it will just expand Alibaba’s content reach. Should Alibaba be on your “buy” list for 2016? What other Chinese stocks are the best in their class? Listen to this week’s podcast to find out. Ltd. Qing Yang Team Leader of Unicorn Team, Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. It is known that GPS L1 signal is unencrypted so that someone can produce or replay the fake GPS signal to make GPS receivers get wrong positioning results. There are many companies provide commercial GPS emulators, which can be used for the GPS spoofing, but the commercial emulators are quite expensive, or at least not free. Now we found by integrating some open source projects related to GPS we can produce GPS signal through SDR tools, e.g. USRP / bladeRF. This makes the attack cost very low. It may influence all the civilian use GPS chipset. In this presentation, the basic GPS system principle, signal structure, mathematical models of pseudo-range and Doppler effect will be introduced. The useful open source projects on Internet will be shared with attendees. HUANG Lin is a wireless security researcher, from Unicorn Team of Qihoo 360 China. Before entering Qihoo, she worked for telecom operator Orange, for 9 years, as a wireless researcher. Her interests include the security issues in wireless communication, especially the cellular network security, and also other problems in ADS-B, GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, and automotive electronics. Twitter: @huanglin_bupt She is one of the earliest users of USRP in China, and keeps active in SDR/USRP research and development since 2006. She contributed to several UMTS/LTE soft base station projects, e.g. Open Air Interface. In 2009, She wrote one free e-book for GNU Radio training, which is very popular in China. Ltd. Haoqi Shan Wireless/hardware security researcher, Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. In recent years, more and more products, are integrated with cellular modem, such as cars of BMW, Tesla, wearable devices, remote meters, i.e. Internet of things. Through this way, manufactories can offer remote service and develop a lot of attractive functions to make their product more valuable. However, many vulnerabilities have also been introduced into these systems. It puts new questions to black-box penetration testing engineer. How to capture the SMS command between the cellular modem and the remote server? How to intercept the data link? Some existing solutions, such as USRP based OpenBTS, commercial product nanoBTS can be used to build a fake base station and capture data traffic. However all of them cannot access the real operator's core network so that they cannot capture real SMS and voice traffic. With the inspiration from social engineering, we got a femto-cell base station from a telecom operator. After a series of hacking and modifications, we built it as a powerful SMS, voice and data link inception tool. Furthermore, not like a fake station, it’s a legal base station and authorized to access the operator’s core network. By this tool, we can conveniently explore vulnerabilities of cellular modem inside products. Yuwei Zheng is a senior security researcher concentrated in embedded systems over 10 years. He had reversed blackberry BBM, PIN, BIS push mail protocol , and decrypted the network stream successfully in 2011. After that, one year later, he finished a MITM attack for blackberry BES, which based on a modified ECMQV protocol of RIM. At the Qtr4 of 2014, he entered wireless security research group, Unicorn Team, in Qihoo 360 China. Now he is focusing on the security issues of embedded hardware and IOT systems. He obtained bachelor degree of electronic engineering in Harbin Engineering University, China, in 2015. He focuses on Wi-Fi penetration, GSM system, router/switcher hacking etc. Other research interests include mobile phone application security, reverse engineering on embedded devices such as femto-cell base station, Audio cameras.

With the advent of the Internet of Things, more and more objects are connected via various communication protocols like Bluetooth,Z-wave,WiFi , ZigBee etc. Among those protocols ZigBee accounts for the largest market share,it has been adapted to various applications like WSN(Wireless Sensor Network),Smart Home . Over the last few years, large amount of research has been conducted on the security of ZigBee. In this presentation we will introduce a new technique to beat the security of ZigBee, we found the “signature” of the location of the security key . We will go through a specific example and share the thinking process along the way. The techniques used throughout this example can be generalized and used by other hardware reverse engineers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LAiHWAvIMk In this edition of China Money Network, Tian X. Hou, founder and CEO of T.H. Capital, shares her thoughts on why Qihoo's stock is just starting a major bull run, why Sina is undervalued and what Baidu should do to advance forward in a mobile world. Listen to the full interview in the audio podcast, watch an abbreviated video version or read an excerpt below. Q: How will China's economic slowdown impact Chinese overseas listed Internet stocks? A: Not that much. The Chinese Internet companies raise money from private funds and public markets. They spend their money buying advertising and traffic online. So the Internet becomes a self-feeding economy. China's credit crunch and liquidity issues have little to do with Chinese Internet companies. Q: In May, Qihoo 360's stocks were trading just above US$40, and you had a buy rating with a price target of US$52. Today, the stock is trading around US$51. Where do you think it will go next? A: Currently, we are using 2014 earning projections. I think if we use forecast numbers further out, we could see the stock trading between US$67 and US$87 at the end of next year. Qihoo's strength comes from several places. One is its monopoly in PC security software, or its anti-virus software. It's literally used on every single PC in China. When users install the software, they are asked to use Qihoo's browser and set up a Qihoo personal page. This set-up enables Qihoo to gain search market share in a second. Qihoo launched search service last August. Over night, it gained 8% market share. Today, it has 16% of the search market. Another strength is Qihoo's web game hosting business. Because they have a lot of traffic, they are able to sell traffic to web game owners or developers. Even though each web game may be small, but the aggregate of all the games is huge. As the host, Qihoo is growing this business very rapidly. Lastly, Qihoo's Android app store is number one in China with 110,000 apps and billions of downloads. Just two months ago, it was number two. Qihoo can do two things with this platform. It distributes enterprises' mobile apps. Everybody needs a channel to distribute their apps. Qihoo plays that role and charge money. Qihoo also operates a mobile game hosting service. It's similar to web game hosting service but on mobile. There is great revenue potential in this business as well. So Qihoo's potential growth is just starting and the company is in a fast-moving upward trend. Q: What are some major risks you see with the company? A: The company could raise more money in a secondary offering, or they could buy other companies. These could cause the stock to set back temporarily. Also, the strong personality of Qihoo's CEO Zhou Hongyi could potentially create issues for the company. Q: For Sina, you've had a price target of US$89 for some time, but the stock seems to suffer from a lack of direction. It's currently around US$55. Are you still holding on to your projection? A: Very much. All the Chinese stocks that we recommended "buy" have enjoyed a good run. Sina is the only exception. Sina's Weibo is more than social media. It has a very authentic user base. Sina somehow thought it could monetize Weibo quickly so monetization schedule got pushed back several times. Some investors therefore doubt whether Sina can monetize Weibo. Weibo's traffic, including mobile, is 1 billion times a day. That compares with 800 million for Baidu and 400 million for Alibaba's Taobao. But if you look at advertisers, Baidu has about 400,000, Alibaba has almost 800,000 vendors. Weibo's advertisers are negligible. If we look at Weibo's recent strategic alliance with Alibaba, the potential value creation is being under-estimated. What you see now, display of Taobao vendors on Weibo, is just regular traffic direction. There will be another potential revenue source coming from a specially designed product that is...
