AI Arms Race from ChatGPT to Deepseek - AZ TRT S06 EP08 (269) 4-20-2025              What We Learned This Week AI Arms Race is real with the major tech co's involved ChatGPT by OpenAI is considering the top chat AI program Google has Gemini (was Bard), Microsoft has CoPilot, Amazon has Claude / Alexa Deepseek is a startup from China that has disrupted AI landscape with a more cost effective AI model Costs and investment $ dollars into AI is being rethought as Deepseek spent millions $ vs Silicon Valley spending billions $   Notes: Seg 1:   Major Tech Giants AI Programs - Gemini (was Bard) Developed by Google, Gemini is known for its multimodal capabilities and integration with Google Search. It can analyze images, understand verbal prompts, and engage in verbal conversations.  ChatGPT Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is known for its versatility and platform-agnostic solution for text generation and learning. It can write code in almost any language, and can also be used to provide research assistance, generate writing prompts, and answer questions.  Microsoft Copilot Developed by Microsoft, Copilot is known for its integration with applications like Word, Excel, and Power BI. It's particularly well-suited for document automation.    Amazon Alexa w/ Claude - Improved AI Model: Claude is a powerful AI model from Anthropic, known for its strengths in natural language processing and conversational AI, as noted in the video and other sources.        Industry 3.0 (1969-2010): The Third Industrial Revolution, or the Digital Revolution, was marked by the automation of production through the use of computers, information technology, and the internet. This era saw the widespread adoption of digital technologies, including programmable logic controllers and robots.  Industry 4.0 (2010-present): The Fourth Industrial Revolution, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is characterized by the integration of digital technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and cyber-physical systems, into manufacturing and industrial processes. This era is focused on creating "smart factories" and "smart products" that can communicate and interact with each other, leading to increased efficiency, customization, and sustainability.    Top AI programs include a range of software, platforms, and resources for learning and working with artificial intelligence. Some of the most popular AI software tools include Viso Suite, ChatGPT, Jupyter Notebooks, and Google Cloud AI Platform, while popular AI platforms include TensorFlow and PyTorch. Educational resources like Coursera's AI Professional Certificate and Fast.ai's practical deep learning course also offer valuable learning opportunities.    ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in 2022. It is based on large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4o. ChatGPT can generate human-like conversational responses and enables users to refine and steer a conversation towards a desired length, format, style, level of detail, and language.[2] It is credited with accelerating the AI boom, which has led to ongoing rapid investment in and public attention to the field of artificial intelligence (AI).[3] Some observers have raised concern about the potential of ChatGPT and similar programs to displace human intelligence, enable plagiarism, or fuel misinformation.[4][5] OpenAI was founded in December 2015 by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. The founding team combined their diverse expertise in technology entrepreneurship, machine learning, and software engineering to create an organization focused on advancing artificial intelligence in a way that benefits humanity. Elon Musk is no longer involved in OpenAI, and Sam Altman is the current CEO of the organization. ChatGPT has had a profound influence on the evolution of AI, paving the way for advancements in natural language understanding and generation. It has demonstrated the effectiveness of transformer-based models for language tasks, which has encouraged other AI researchers to adopt and refine this architecture. The model's success has also stimulated interest in LLMs, leading to a wave of research and development in this area.   Seg 2: DeepSeek is a private Chinese company founded in July 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, a graduate of Zhejiang University, one of China's top universities, who funded the startup via his hedge fund, according to the MIT Technology Review. Liang has about $8 billion in assets, Ives wrote in a Jan. 27 research note. Chinese startup DeepSeek's launch of its latest AI models, which it says are on a par or better than industry-leading models in the United States at a fraction of the cost, is threatening to upset the technology world order. The company has attracted attention in global AI circles after writing in a paper last month that the training of DeepSeek-V3 required less than $6 million worth of computing power from Nvidia H800 chips. DeepSeek's AI Assistant, powered by DeepSeek-V3, has overtaken rival ChatGPT to become the top-rated free application available on Apple's App Store in the United States. This has raised doubts about the reasoning behind some U.S. tech companies' decision to pledge billions of dollars in AI investment and shares of several big tech players, including Nvidia, have been hit.   NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra Enables AI ReasoningThe NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 connects 72 Blackwell Ultra GPUs and 36 Arm Neoverse-based NVIDIA Grace™ CPUs in a rack-scale design, acting as a single massive GPU built for test-time scaling. With the NVIDIA GB300 NVL72, AI models can access the platform's increased compute capacity to explore different solutions to problems and break down complex requests into multiple steps, resulting in higher-quality responses. GB300 NVL72 is also expected to be available on NVIDIA DGX™ Cloud, an end-to-end, fully managed AI platform on leading clouds that optimizes performance with software, services and AI expertise for evolving workloads. NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD™ with DGX GB300 systems uses the GB300 NVL72 rack design to provide customers with a turnkey AI factory. The NVIDIA HGX B300 NVL16 features 11x faster inference on large language models, 7x more compute and 4x larger memory compared with the Hopper generation to deliver breakthrough performance for the most complex workloads, such as AI reasoning.     AZ TRT Shows – related to AI Topic Link: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=ai+       Biotech Shows: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Biotech-Life+Sciences-Science   AZ Tech Council Shows:  https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=az+tech+council *Includes Best of AZ Tech Council show from 2/12/2023   Tech Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Tech-Startup-VC-Cybersecurity-Energy-Science  Best of Tech: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=best+of+tech   ‘Best Of' Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+of+BRT      Thanks for Listening. Host Jenny engages with Lia Haberman, a creator economy expert, to unpack the role of influencer marketing in higher education. Fresh off a visit to the White House, Lia shares insights into the evolution of the creator economy, how influencers shape audience engagement, and actionable strategies for integrating influencer marketing into university communications.Key TakeawaysInfluencer Marketing vs. Creator Economy: Understand the difference between influencers promoting brands and the larger ecosystem enabling creators to thrive. Why Higher Ed Needs Influencers: Institutions can leverage influencers, including students, alumni, and faculty, to amplify messages authentically.Building Relationships with Influencers: Collaborate with influencers through budget-friendly approaches like campus events, content partnerships, or passion-driven projects.Start Small and Local: Many influencers with niche audiences, such as professors or student athletes, can create meaningful connections without hefty price tags.Stay Current: Keeping up with newsletters, books, and conferences helps higher ed marketers navigate the rapidly evolving influencer landscape. What Is Influencer Marketing?Lia Haberman defines influencer marketing as a brand's collaboration with influencers to promote its products or services to their audiences. She explains that this is a subset of the broader creator economy, which encompasses the platforms, tools, and businesses supporting influencers. While influencer marketing has evolved from simply posting product ads, its role remains vital in creating relatable and impactful connections. For higher ed, influencer marketing means leveraging students, alumni, and faculty to act as relatable amplifiers for the institution's messaging. Haberman notes that while traditional marketing can feel impersonal, influencers offer a genuine voice, fostering trust and engagement. Why Higher Ed Should Embrace InfluencersHigher education is notoriously slow to adopt new trends, but Lia emphasizes the benefits of integrating influencer marketing into university strategies:Reach Gen Z and Gen Alpha: These demographics trust influencers and prefer authentic, peer-led communication over institutional messaging.Evolve Beyond Celebrities: Influencers today include professionals, experts, and niche creators, making the strategy accessible to universities with diverse audiences.Build Relatable Content: Influencers excel at creating compelling content that resonates with their audience, often outperforming traditional advertising.Lia encourages institutions to think locally, identifying influencers within their community, such as star student-athletes, faculty with niche audiences, or alumni with strong online presences.Finding and Collaborating with InfluencersWhen it comes to sourcing influencers, Lia suggests the following:Social Listening: Observe who your students engage with online. Tools can help, but even manual research—like monitoring social media interactions—yields insights.Personal Outreach: Sliding into DMs with genuine compliments or proposals can open doors for collaboration.Creative Compensation: Not all partnerships require big budgets. Consider offering speaking opportunities, awards, or aligning with the influencer's passions to add value. For example, a university might work with a prominent alumni influencer to create content showcasing campus life. The collaboration doesn't have to break the bank—highlighting shared values or giving access to unique resources can be enough.Influencer Marketing on a BudgetHigher ed marketers often face budget constraints, but Lia stresses that great partnerships are still possible. Micro-influencers or creators with smaller, engaged followings can be affordable and impactful. Additionally, repurposing influencer-created content for institutional social media channels can stretch limited resources.Institutions can also look internally for influencers. Professors with expertise, athletes, or even enthusiastic students can act as authentic voices for the university. Lia highlights examples like Stephen Nedorazek, an Olympian and Penn State student whose collaboration with the university has amplified its reach.Staying Informed in a Rapidly Evolving SpaceLia recommends staying current through newsletters, books, and conferences. For beginners, she suggests resources like her own newsletter, In Case You Missed It, as well as other thought leaders like Rachel Karten and Lindsay Gamble. Regularly attending events like VidCon or VidSummit can also provide inspiration and insights into the latest trends.Guest Name: Lia Haberman, Creator Economy Expert | Advisor | EducatorGuest Socials:LinkedInXInstagramBlueskyTikTok Guest Bio: Lia Haberman is a distinguished Creator Economy expert and author of the best selling ICYMI newsletter — a must read for anyone in the social marketing space. She's been tapped for her social media and creator insights by brands such as Google, Robert Half and AT&T, she was invited to attend the first ever Creator Economy Conference at the White House in 2024, and has led live creator workshops for clients such as YouTubers Colin and Samir, Macy's and Riot Games. She teaches social media and influencer marketing at UCLA Extension; has created custom lectures for visiting students from Zhejiang University, SKEMA Business School and ESIC University; and was asked to speak to a delegation as part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program at UCLA. Play Episode Listen Later Dec 26, 2024 5:11

Artificial intelligence-enabled medical diagnostic tools are ensuring greater accuracy in cancer screening and detection, helping doctors arrive at more precise diagnoses and enhancing treatment quality.Zhejiang University recently introduced an AI-powered universal pathology assistant called OmniPT, which integrates vision and language models for human-computer interaction. The model is being used at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine's department of pathology, focusing on high-incidence cancers such as gastric, colorectal and cervical. The hospital in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, is the first clinical institution in China to use an AI-powered pathology assistant.OmniPT has achieved a number of breakthroughs in laboratory tests, including in cancer classification, grading, vascular and neural invasion identification and the discovery of markers that indicate the future course of the disease, the hospital said. Analyses and predictions by OmniPT have been 80 to 90 percent accurate across cancer types. Most patients and their families are unfamiliar with the details of pathology examinations — work performed on tissue samples or cells in a lab, and pathologists generally do not interact directly with patients. When biological samples from a patient are sent to a lab, experts go through an intense process to understand the pathological changes and the nature of the disease in the specimen at hand. The role of the pathologist is to help reach an accurate diagnosis through the application of rigorous empirical standards. China, however, faces a severe shortage of pathology professionals."Many people may know that pediatricians are in short supply, but pathologists are even more rare. Currently, our country needs 150,000 to 200,000 pathologists, but there are only about 30,000 officially registered," said Zhang Jing, chair of the pathology department and vice-president of the Yuhang branch of the hospital.Apart from this massive gap, there are also regional imbalances. While cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou may be facing less severe shortages, the situation is dire in remote areas, he added.Additionally, the long training period only complicates the situation as young pathologists often lack the required depth of experience.Against this backdrop, OmniPT, developed by Professor Song Mingli's team from Zhejiang University's College of Computer Science and Technology in collaboration with the First Affiliated Hospital, is facilitating fast, accurate clinical diagnosis.By leveraging human-computer interaction and centering on the needs of pathologists, OmniPT significantly improves diagnostic efficiency and quality, and helps alleviate the shortage of professionals."It serves as an assistant to pathologists by handling repetitive tasks so that they can focus on final judgment," Zhang said.He provided an example of counting mitosis, which is a critical task when diagnosing gliomas, a kind of tumor that can be found in the brain or spinal cord."It can take at least 30 minutes to an hour to count a single pathology slide under a high-power microscope," he said."OmniPT, however, can complete this task in less than 10 seconds. Its computational capabilities allow it to analyze the findings in far greater detail than manual work. When it encounters 10 uncertain mitotic figures, it reports to a pathologist like me to make the final judgment," Zhang added. In collaboration with the hospital, Song's team has focused on clinical needs. OmniPT accelerates the evaluation of samples on slides, particularly details that might be overlooked by fatigued doctors. OmniPT handles more than 90 percent of repetitive tasks, leaving only a small fraction for pathologists to assess."It assists us, but it doesn't drive us. We drive it. By leveraging AI in our interactions, we can solve challenging problems in pathology — particularly for people in remote regions or those with less experienced doctors. It greatly improves efficiency, reduces costs and helps us avoid errors," Zhang said.

A future where injured or diseased organs can be removed and replaced with new lab-printed tissues that are customized specifically for each patient is not as far away as you might think. These functional and living tissues could grow naturally within the body, and repair and sustain themselves over time. While these concepts were once in the realm of science fiction, advances in bioprinting, which is a form of 3D printing using biological “inks” (known as bioinks) loaded with living cells, are bringing them closer to reality. Among the researchers advancing this field is Dr. Mingjun Xie of Zhejiang University, China, and colleagues, who are performing work that addresses a significant challenge in bioprinting. This involves creating large portions of tissues that have a functional vasculature, thereby mimicking the complexity of native tissues and organs.

Timestamps: 4:56 - Having an investor back out 11:45 - Was the AVA exit a good or bad thing? 14:55 - Femtech stopped paying salaries and vendors 21:08 - Moving on to expeerly 30:29 - Is bootstrapping more stressful? About Lea von Bidder: Lea von Bidder is the co-founder and former CEO of AVA Women, a femtech startup advancing women's reproductive health by bringing together artificial intelligence and clinical research. Since 2022 she's also the founder and CEO at expeerly, a startup which makes it easy and efficient for companies to leverage the power of video without the hassle of production, editing, and distribution. She holds a MSc in Global Entrepreneurship from Emlyon Business School and Zhejiang University. AVA Women garnered much fame and success in Switzerland from 2015 up until 2021 (more on that in Lea's former episode with us), but unfortunately in 2021 they had their leading investor back out of their Series C round, which made the whole fundraising round fall apart. Since they did not have the money necessary to carry on for another 6-12 months, which would have been the time necessary to set up a new fundraising round, Lea and her co-founders decided to sell the company, and contacted CEOs they were personally acquainted with.   Out of many potential buyers, they chose FemTech Health, because they believed in their vision to unite the fragmented femtech market. Sadly, FemTech didn't not follow through with the promises they had made post-exit, and even stopped paying vendors and employees, resulting in a round of layoffs. At this point, Lea left the company herself. She has since begun a new venture, expeerly, which she is bootstrapping.  Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Designing a robust portfolio requires considerable expertise, data, and experience. And while there are plenty of published articles that can guide how you build your portfolio, they are not investment solutions by themselves. Wei Dai is the Head of Investment Research and Vice President at Dimensional Fund Advisors, and she joins us today for a comprehensive and informative conversation on portfolio design for higher returns. Her background includes a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Statistics, Operations research, and Financial Engineering from Princeton. She has also earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and applied mathematics from Zhejiang University. Her work has been published in multiple journals, including The Financial Analysts Journal. She has also collaborated on articles with esteemed figures such as Professor Robert C. Merton and Robert Novy-Marx. In our conversation with Wei, we explore the contents of these articles, key findings from research conducted by Dimensional Fund Advisors, and how they are implementing this knowledge in their portfolios. We discuss the fundamental aspects of portfolio design, like expected return, risk, and costs, with Wei providing a detailed breakdown of each subject. There's a lot to be learned from today's conversation, and while things get pretty technical, you are in very capable hands! Tune in for a fascinating dive into the latest research on portfolio design and much more.   Key Points From This Episode:   (0:03:37) The main risk premiums that Dimensional Fund Advisors target in their portfolios. (0:05:42) How long-term drivers of returns vary across different regions: an overview of the tests and outcomes they've seen at Dimensional Fund Advisors. (0:07:15) Unpacking whether the value premium differs from the profitability premium across regions; why it makes sense to be globally diversified. (0:08:57) Typical approaches to a multi-premium strategy in a portfolio: a rundown of the three approaches they take at Dimensional and the trade-offs between each. (0:13:44) How they evaluate portfolios at Dimenstional: the benefits of taking a holistic, integrated approach, and instances where that doesn't make sense. (0:17:24) Weighting schemes: Dimensional's approach to assigning individual security weights to achieve the desired level of exposure and how investments factor into weights. (0:26:46) Advice on how investors should decide whether to currency hedge their foreign asset exposures, and insights on how to approach currency hedging. (0:30:42) Premium timing: Why timing exposure to premiums is so tempting; parameters that must be defined to implement timing strategies; and which strategies worked in their research. (0:39:21) Valuation ratios: why it theoretically makes sense that they would be related to differences in expected returns and why they aren't useful in timing premiums. (0:42:11) An overview of the main implications for pursuing premiums that arise from Dimensional's research. (0:44:10) Diversification and how to improve your odds of capturing return premiums. (0:46:38) The tradeoff between concentration and expected returns, and defining the optimal balance. (0:49:06) What investors should look for when choosing a systematic investment manager, why not all systematic strategies are created equal, and Dimemsional's approach. (0:52:52) The downsides of performance fees, specifically for systematic managers and what it was like writing a paper with Robert Merton. (0:57:41) How short-term reversals differ from momentum, ways that reversals are related to liquidity, and how reversals vary across different stocks. (01:03:12) The ways that Dimensional is implementing this knowledge in their portfolios; how their ideas go from research to publication to implementation. (01:08:18) What sets Dimensional apart, and the value that they add, despite their research being available online.   Links From Today's Episode: Rational Reminder on iTunes — https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-rational-reminder-podcast/id1426530582. In Seeking a Future for the Past: Space, Power, and Heritage in a Chinese City (U Michigan Press, 2024), Philipp Demgenski examines the complexities and changing sociopolitical dynamics of urban renewal in contemporary China. Drawing on ten years of ethnographic fieldwork in the northeastern Chinese city of Qingdao, the book tells the story of the slow, fragmented, and contentious transformation of Dabaodao - an area in the city's former colonial center - from a place of common homes occupied by the urban poor into a showcase of architectural heritage and site for tourism and consumption. The ethnography provides a nuanced account of the diverse experiences and views of a range of groups involved in shaping, and being shaped, by the urban renewal process - local residents, migrant workers, preservationists, planners, and government officials - foregrounding the voices and experiences of marginal groups, such as migrants in the city. Unpacking structural reasons for urban developmental impasses, it paints a nuanced local picture of urban governance and political practice in contemporary urban China. The book also weighs the positives and negatives of heritage preservation and scrutinizes the meanings and effects of “preservation” on diverse social actors. By zeroing in on the seemingly contradictory yet coexisting processes of urban stagnation and urban destruction, Seeking a Future for the Past reveals the multifaceted challenges that China faces in reforming its urbanization practices and, ultimately, in managing its urban future. Philipp Demgenski is Assistant Professor in Anthropology within the Department of Sociology at Zhejiang University, China, and a Senior Research Fellow at Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Germany. His research interests include intangible cultural heritage, the politics of space and place, memory, and urban redevelopment. Yadong Li is a PhD student in anthropology at Tulane University. Zong Qinghou, the founder and chairman of Hangzhou Wahaha Group, China's leading beverage manufacturer, passed away on Sunday at the age of 79. As one of the most respected representatives of China's first generation of entrepreneurs since the country embarked on reform and opening-up in 1978, Zong's down-to-earth style and innovative spirit greatly impressed the public. Experts said Zong's rags-to-riches life story will surely inspire more Chinese entrepreneurs to focus on the real economy and run their businesses in a pragmatic and steady manner. Born in 1945 in Suqian, Jiangsu province, Zong took over a small grocery store at a school in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, in 1987, and worked as a distributor of soft drinks and popsicles for children. In 1989, he founded Hangzhou Wahaha Nutritional Food Factory, which became Hangzhou Wahaha Group two years later after the acquisition of a local canned food factory on the verge of bankruptcy.1989年,他创办了杭州娃哈哈营养食品厂,两年后收购了当地一家濒临破产的罐头厂,成为杭州娃哈哈集团。In 1996, Zong launched Wahaha AD calcium milk, which became a great hit with Chinese consumers.1996年,宗庆后推出娃哈哈AD钙奶,受到中国消费者的欢迎。The company's products now cover more than 200 categories, including purified water, milk and yogurt drinks, carbonated drinks, fruit and vegetable juice, tea and coffee drinks, with its sales revenue reaching 51.2 billion yuan ($7.1 billion) in 2022. China's efforts to review normative documents, such as administrative regulations and judicial interpretations, will be strengthened in line with a new decision to ensure that the Constitution is better upheld and implemented. The 22-article decision, passed on Friday by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, emphasized the importance of examining whether normative documents are consistent with the Constitution, and it urged more studies on constitutional issues.Provisions that contradict the Constitution, its principles or its spirit must be corrected in a timely manner, the decision said, adding that NPC special committees or the NPC Standing Committee's working bodies have the right to require those who create problematic documents to rectify or remove them.It is the first time that the NPC Standing Committee has streamlined the process of reviewing normative documents, with specifications on what should be examined, through such a legislative decision."Improving the review, correction and abolition procedures is to play the supervision role of the NPC Standing Committee, showing our stronger determination to rectify unconstitutional behavior," said Yan Dongfeng, head of the review office of the NPC Standing Committee's Legislative Affairs Commission. He said the formulation of the decision was designed to ensure the full implementation of the Constitution as required by the central leadership and a report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2022.Zhang Yong, deputy head of the commission, said the decision will promote whole-process people's democracy, advance law-based governance and guarantee compliance with rule of law."It's also a summary of our experience in reviewing documents over the past few years," Zhang said.In one case given as an example, the commission said practices resulting in the collective punishment of family members of convicted criminals should be abolished, as they were inconsistent with the principles and spirit of the Constitution. The commission had received requests from some residents for a review of local notices in which a few criminals' spouses, children, parents and close relatives had been subjected to restrictions in accessing education, employment and social insurance.Flagging the restrictions as collective punishment, the residents called for such practices to be stopped. The case was included in a recent report released by the commission, which deemed the notices inconsistent with the Constitution and laws related to education, employment and social insurance."So we've urged related departments to abolish the documents," said Shen Chunyao, head of the commission. "Criminals should be liable and punished for their own misconduct, meaning that others shouldn't be implicated in the penalties. It's a basic principle of rule of law in modern society."Self-examination should also be encouraged across the country to prevent similar situations, he said. The decision also expanded the scope of documents deemed to be normative to include those created by economic zones and free trade areas, and said all such documents should be handed over to the NPC Standing Committee for record within 30 days of being made public. It also urged greater efforts to use information platforms for recording and reviewing documents to make the process digital as well as easier. The decision, which took immediate effect on Friday, has received thumbs-ups from law professionals.Zhang Xiang, a law professor at Peking University, said oversight of normative documents had been intensified since the 19th CPC National Congress in 2017, adding that the decision provided a stronger legal basis for it.Zheng Lei, a law professor at Zhejiang University, said the decision has legal force despite not being a typical law, comparing it to a prelude to subsequent special legislation.Qin Qianhong, a law professor at Wuhan University, said in a recent article that the adoption of the decision was conducive to solving problems in the review of normative documents, and was a quick response to meet public demands on establishing rule of law and correcting unconstitutional actions.Reporter: Cao Yin

East Buy, a subsidiary of private tutoring giant New Oriental that successfully transitioned to a livestreaming e-commerce company, removed Sun Dongxu as its executive director and CEO, and named New Oriental's founder Yu Minhong as its chief executive. The appointment, which was confirmed by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange late on Sunday, came after a dispute involving the company's most influential livestreamer, Dong Yuhui, intensified last week, leading the Hong Kong-listed company to suffer billion-yuan losses on the stock market within days. Industry experts said it is time for companies to reevaluate their star-oriented business model and strengthen internal management, in order to drive the country's burgeoning livestreaming e-commerce sector to be more rational and healthier. Dong, who was formerly an English teacher at New Oriental Group, went viral as a livestreamer in June last year thanks to his insightful and humorous hosting style. He soon amassed a huge number of followers, who bought products from East Buy just because of him. His followers on Chinese short-video platform Douyin hit a staggering 20 million as of Sunday. The latest dispute started after the editorial team of East Buy said on Dec 6 that the script used by Dong during livestreaming was written by the team and not by the star alone. It quickly prompted a group of online shoppers and many of Dong's fans to question the company for taking credit for his work and longtime efforts. On Tuesday, Sun Dongxu, then CEO of East Buy, said in a livestream that neither the editorial team nor Dong had behaved appropriately, adding that Dong is treated well by the company and draws a steep annual salary. Sun also condemned the "fandom culture", noting that netizens often attack a company because of their idol. He triggered a wave of anger among netizens with his remarks and aggressive approach during the livestream, including hurling his cellphone onto a table. Many netizens said they felt offended by Sun's behavior. They said they felt like employees being rebuked by their boss, instead of being respected as consumers. Later, both Sun and Yu, the founder of New Oriental, as well as Dong, apologized for the incident and clarified that the script used for the livestream was written by both the editorial team and Dong. However, this didn't stop the stock price of the Beijing-based company from plunging to HK$26.25 ($3.69) per share on Friday from HK$32.75 on Dec 6. The number of followers on Easy Buy's Douyin account was 28 million as of Sunday, a significant drop from over 31 million a week ago. Zhang Yi, chief analyst at market consultancy iiMedia Research, said, "The incident is basically an internal strife over making a balanced profit distribution between leading livestreamers and companies or MCN (multichannel network) agencies that manage livestreamers." The East Buy case is not a stray incident, Zhang said, adding that many livestreaming e-commerce companies are star-oriented and rely hugely on a top livestreamer to attract customers and make profits, as can be seen from the emergence of Li Jiaqi, a top beauty and cosmetics livestreamer well-known as "lipstick king". Livestreaming has become deeply entrenched in people's lives in the country over the past years. Data from iiMedia Research showed that the market scale of China's livestreaming e-commerce sector reached 1.43 trillion yuan ($200 billion) last year, up 19.5 percent year-on-year. 19.5%。On Saturday night, Yu and Dong appeared in a livestream in order to prevent the incident's impact from further spilling over. Yu admitted that East Buy had been plunged into "chaos", and removing Sun from his current position was due to a series of mistakes he made while performing his management duties. Sun will continue to work in other positions in New Oriental," Yu said, emphasizing that Dong had never been asked to leave.“孙东旭将继续在新东方的其他职位上工作,”俞敏洪表示,并强调从未要求董宇辉离职。There were rumors in the market that Dong was being courted by other livestreaming e-commerce companies and some tech giants. Recalling the past week, Dong said the dispute was "painful" and hoped it would end soon. He added that he was staying with East Buy. Pan Helin, co-director of the Digital Economy and Financial Innovation Research Center at Zhejiang University's International Business School, said that China's livestreaming e-commerce industry is a unique and emerging business, and that it is not surprising that the consumers' trust in a top livestreamer makes all the difference. The Beijing Consumers Association conducted a survey, in which nearly half of the respondents said their "fondness" for a particular livestreamer was the main factor motivating them to watch the live online programs. On the one hand, we have to admit that the market value of such an engaged user traffic from a livestreamer is immeasurable. On the other hand, the country's livestreaming e-commerce sector needs adjustments, and fans need to be more rational to avoid extreme fandom culture," Pan said.“一方面,我们不得不承认,参与用户流量给网络直播带来了巨大的市场价值。另一方面,中国的直播电商行业也需要调整,粉丝需要更加理性,避免极端的粉丝文化。”盘和林说。Zhang, from iiMedia Research, said: "Companies should also beef up management and avoid risks. Also, the sector can be more technology-driven with the rise of artificial intelligence-based virtual livestreamers." Hurl英/hɜːl/ 美/hɝl/v. 〔用力〕投掷〔尤因生气〕;猛摔

Looking Outside comes to you LIVE from the Dubai Future Forum, the largest gathering of futurists in the world. In this conversation we talk about disruptive technology and transformative blue sky innovation with Airbus Senior Vice President and Head of Disruptive Research and Technology, Dr Grzegorz (Greg) Ombach. Greg describes the mindset shift he experienced in leading innovative transformation across various industries, each with their own lifecycle - from Telecommunications with 1 to 2 year innovation cycles, then to Automotive where it moved out to 7-10 years and now in the Aerospace industry where he has 30-50 years in sight. As Greg considers future disruption, he is looking out to the next 50 years with a clear goal in mind. For Airbus, this takes the ambition of the company from accessible air travel, to sustainable air travel, and then to aerospace. Greg describes how this focus on transformation through disruptive technology requires active monitoring and proactive imagining. At Airbus, this is enabled firstly by enlisting open and curious people called 'Scouts' whose role it is to spot new trends across varied regions. These people are inhouse engineers who have a finger on the pulse of the air travel and aerospace ecosystem in which they operate daily and are therefore in the best position to assess the viability of the trends for the business. Accompanying this is the center of research where the 'Blue Sky Thinkers' live. Their job is to come up with moonshot ideas that are turned into pilots.Jo and Greg also discuss the need to look more broadly, assessing a product based on its ecosystem - what keeps the structure standing on the outside as well as the components that keep it relevant on the inside. --If Greg was not a futurist, he would be sailing around the world. He gets energy and drive from exploring new places, from discovering new places and being able to adjust the course based on the conditions. --Dr Grzegorz (Greg) Ombach, is Head of Disruptive Research & Technology, Senior Vice President at Airbus. Greg is passionate about managing technological innovation from an idea to broad market adoption. His combination of technology, leadership and commercial expertise together with a truly global outlook, having worked across Europe, the USA and China, puts him in a solid position to drive international market success for high-tech innovations. As a Head of Disruptive R&T, he shapes Airbus's ability to be the global leader in innovation and future technologies across all Airbus divisions. There is a 950 million yuan ($131.15 million) industry cashing in on college admissions. As an increasing number of Chinese parents turn to paid service providers, who claim to be using AI-driven technology, to decide which universities their children should apply to for their undergraduate studies, experts have warned against opting for such services.Chen Huajun, a professor at Zhejiang University's College of Computer Science and Technology, said that AI, assisted by big data technology, can help analyze information, which is good."It can help fill the information gap (between universities and students), but can only be used as a reference," Chen was quoted as saying by Qianjiang Evening News.A fraud alert has been issued by Beijing Education Examinations Authority against "application consulting services with a high price tag". "Schools and teachers are forbidden to work with companies or institutions that make money by providing application consulting services," said the authority.Students in China need to complete the college application process within a short time after gaokao, the nationwide college entrance exam, based on their grades. If their grades are higher than the threshold announced by colleges they are applying to, they will be enrolled. Otherwise, they have to find a place in other schools.According to data from the country's education ministry, as of June 15, there are 3,072 colleges and universities in China. A total of 12.91 million candidates are vying for admissions this year.Against this backdrop, a large number of service providers are offering new tools, which they claim are based on artificial intelligence, to help with the college admission process. Hundreds of such apps are available in mobile app stores."It's a headache helping my daughter decide which universities she should apply for because of the overwhelming amount of information," said Li Jie, mother of a college candidate in Shanxi province. "However, I didn't take help from any apps or companies because I'm not sure how capable those are," she added.According to Chinese corporate information provider Tianyancha, there are more than 1,850 enterprises in China with names or business scope that suggest involvement in the college application process. Many internet giants such as Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba have also developed such apps. There are also many in-person consulting services to help candidates. The fees range from hundreds to several thousands yuan. The domestic market consultancy firm iiMedia Research estimates that the market value of the college application industry has reached 950 million yuan, a sixfold increase from 2016.However, there is no such entity as "a college application planner "on the official list of occupational qualifications released by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. This means there are no clear standards for people who provide such services.Reporter: Du Juan

This month on JHLT: The Podcast, the JHLT Digital Media Editors review two studies from the February issue of The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation—and bring in a couple of experts to help them make sense of some new technology.   First, the editors explore a pre-clinical study entitled “The dynamic cellular landscape of grafts with acute rejection after heart transplantation,” which comes from Kong and colleagues at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.   Single cell technologies are emerging as non-biased techniques to discover novel biological pathways in a variety of pre-clinical models and in human tissue both in health and disease. To help the editors—and you!—understand single cell approaches and this study, JHLT editors Ben Kopecky, MD, PhD and Kory Lavine, MD, PhD, from the Washington University St. Louis, appear in the episode to explore the methodology and what the study tells us.   Second, the editors welcome author Sam Rayner, MD from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, to discuss the paper by Hirsch and colleagues, “Circulating markers of inflammation and angiogenesis and clinical outcomes across subtypes of pulmonary arterial hypertension.”   When considering differences in pathophysiology of the subtypes of PAH, changes in biomarkers in angiogenesis and inflammation may provide useful insights and potential therapeutic targets. The authors of this study prospectively looked at 33 biomarkers of angiogenesis and inflammation in a cohort of patients across various PAH etiologies, and made correlations to clinical outcomes.   Follow along at www.jhltonline.org/current, or, if you're an ISHLT member, log in at ishlt.org/journal-of-heart-lung-transplantation.  Don't already get the Journal and want to read along? Today on The Negotiation, Todd speaks with author and educator Mark Greeven. He is a former Associate Professor at Zhejiang University's School of Management in Hangzhou, China. Today, Mark serves as Professor of Innovation and Strategy at IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland. The biggest difference between teaching at Zhejiang and at IMD is that the former “has all the features of a bureaucracy that you could imagine when it comes to state-run public institutions.” Despite the limitations imposed on Mark during his time at Zhejiang, he found it refreshing that the students were nevertheless eager to learn anything that Mark was willing to teach. If a foreigner is considering doing business in China, it pays to know the culture and the ecosystems that are unique to the country. Mark says that it will help greatly to familiarize oneself with all the eCommerce and social media platforms that essentially run the modern Chinese economy. In China, Mark classifies four types of innovators who help shape the country's business landscape on a cyclical basis. The first type is the pioneers: usually large, well-known business entities who kickstart or capitalize on new systems or technologies that will continue to evolve, such as manufacturing (in the 1980s) and the internet (in the 2000s). The second group is the hidden champions: lesser-known companies who are proficient when it comes to one specific technology, application, or industrial product. The third type is the technology underdogs: mostly younger companies founded by overseas returnees with newfound prestigious academic accolades. The fourth and final group is the changemakers: digital-driven ventures who believe in rapid iterations and offer disruptive new ideas for traditional industries.Everything in China is always moving. In fact, Mark considers 2015 as having occurred “eons ago”. Countless waves of creativity and innovation have come and gone since. The Chinese, in times past, were not known to be inventors of new technologies as much as they were known to be able to adapt and mass-produce products that come from these technologies. Today, things have changed. When it comes to software engineering, AI, and biotechnology, China is now at the forefront of many breakthrough technologies.
