319 · Sam Gaer - From the Copper Pits to Crypto Derivatives: How Trading Edge Evolves

Chat With Traders

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2026 63:48

Sam Gaer's career spans several major shifts in market structure — from the open-outcry pits of COMEX to high-frequency trading and now crypto derivatives. Sam began his career as a teenage runner on the COMEX floor during the gold boom of the early 1980s before becoming a copper pit trader himself. While most traders relied purely on instinct, Sam was already experimenting with technology — building early pricing tools that helped identify inefficiencies in spread markets. His path eventually led beyond the trading floor into exchange technology and market infrastructure, including building trading software that was later acquired by the New York Mercantile Exchange. In recent years, Sam has focused on crypto markets, where he applies traditional derivatives frameworks to volatility, options, and digital asset trading. In this episode, Sam shares insights from decades of experience across multiple market regimes and discusses how trading edge evolves as markets and technology continue to change. In this episode, we explore: · Getting introduced to markets as a teenager · Life inside the COMEX copper trading pits · Early use of computers to price commodity spreads · Inefficiencies in open-outcry markets · Building exchange technology and selling Trading Gear to NYMEX · The transition from pit trading to electronic markets · Market structure lessons from traditional derivatives markets · Why Sam shifted his focus to crypto markets · Opportunities in crypto options and derivatives · Convexity, volatility, and institutional trading frameworks in digital assets About the guest: Sam Gaer, Chief Investment Officer of the Directional Strategy at Monarq Asset Management, has more than three decades of experience across derivatives trading, exchange technology, and quantitative strategy development. He previously served as Chief Information Officer of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), where he helped modernize the exchange's trading infrastructure. Earlier in his career, he was a floor trader on the COMEX commodities exchange and later founded Trading Gear, a technology firm whose trading software was acquired by NYMEX. Sam has also launched and managed quantitative trading strategies focused on derivatives and volatility markets, and today works on institutional trading approaches within digital asset markets. A bullish long-term outlook for rising natural gas demand and pricing has partially mitigated the current deep concerns about the steep erosion of oil prices. However, short-term gas pricing has proven very volatile, as the near-month NYMEX price has yo-yoed dramatically in October and the Energy Information Administration recently cut its January forecast. In today's RBN blog, we present a new metric that calculates the gas price sensitivity of major U.S. producers.

Market Update Report: Platinum Shortages Are a Modern Metals Market Symptom

Platinum is quietly entering one of the most critical supply squeezes we've seen in years—yet hardly anyone is talking about it. Inventories are vanishing, lease rates are exploding, and major players like China are scooping up what's left. If you're serious about understanding where precious metals are headed next, this is a story you can't afford to ignore. Listen to the full breakdown now before the market catches on.   Platinum Market Squeeze: Platinum lease rates are soaring, signaling extremely tight physical supply globally. Inventories in London and Zurich are reportedly depleted, with NYMEX stocks down over 55% since April 2025. China's Platinum Demand: Despite claims to the contrary, China remains the top platinum consumer—driven by auto manufacturing, glass, and oil refining industries—and is likely absorbing Western inventories. Gold Price Surge on Political Rhetoric: Gold briefly spiked to $3,375 oz midweek after Donald Trump mentioned potentially firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell, before settling back to $3,350 oz. Gold to Silver Ratio Climbs: The ratio rose to 87 this week, with silver retreating slightly to $38.17 oz while gold strengthened—highlighting a potential opportunity for silver to catch up.

John expresses a bullish stance on gold, emphasizing its long-term potential despite near-term volatility. He acknowledges silver's struggles due to contango and high costs but remains optimistic about its eventual rebound. He also highlights his bullishness on bonds and the U.S. economy, crediting President Trump for fostering positive change and balance in the financial system. JJ's trading strategy revolves around technical indicators like the slow stochastic oscillator and Wells Wilder's directional movement indicator, which he applies across various markets. He stresses the importance of position sizing, risk management, and understanding one's limitations as critical components of successful trading. The conversation delves into broader economic themes, including Trump's policies on taxation, tariffs, and antitrust measures, which JJ believes could redistribute wealth more equitably. He also touches on risks such as geopolitical tensions and potential recessions but remains optimistic about the administration's ability to navigate these challenges. John critiques the Federal Reserve's dual mandate, arguing it should prioritize protecting the dollar and banking system. He reflects on the historical significance of current events, likening them to pivotal moments in American history that will shape the nation's future. Under this new three-year contract, starting in November 2024, Diversified will provide approximately 40 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas, using a fixed pricing structure indexed to Gulf Coast prices. Hutson emphasized the significance of this agreement, which supports global energy security at a time when trading partners are grappling with supply disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and rising regional demands. The contract underscores Diversified Energy's reliability in natural gas production and operational efficiency, while offering the company another avenue to boost margins and ensure stable cash flows. Furthermore, Hutson noted that the company has strategically capitalized on the recent strength of natural gas prices to expand its hedge portfolio for 2025 through 2027, with an average NYMEX hedge price of approximately $3.45 per MMBtu. The market is pricing in a zero-percent chance of a recession, but is also rapidly reaching over-bought conditions. The market needs a break at this point, which will give opportunity to add exposure. Gold has had a very nice run, seeming to stagnate somewhat, while maintaining a bullish trend. However, a monthly chart of Gold performance would indicate peaks in prices corresponding with over bought markets typically precede corrections (remember, Gold prices are driven by commodity traders on the NYMEX). Gold traders are extremely long in the speculative positions in Gold, currently. Our advice here is to remember to take profits and rebalance your positions at this point. Tom welcomes back Analyst and experienced commodities trader. Michael now provides advisory through his website moor-analytics to bring actionable intel for traders. Michael is a technical-based analyst and has a deep understanding of commodities like the natural gas market. He believes that technical analysis can be a powerful tool to get in and out of markets before the fundamentals catch up. The two experts discussed the technical patterns for gold, the S&P 500, and Bitcoin. For gold, they looked at various timeframes to gain more insight. On the S&P 500, they talked about the exhaustion levels and the bullish correction that could be triggered if the market holds. Michael also noted that the current character of the market is a corrective character, not a trending one. Finally, they discussed Bitcoin, noting that the rollover in November 2021 put the market into a bearish trend. However, they suggested that the market is building a base, and the nervousness has been put on hold. Overall, Michael Moor is an experienced trader and technical analyst. He believes that technical analysis can be a powerful tool to get in and out of markets before the fundamentals catch up. He also looks at the macro level of a market, layering a shorter-term basis on top of that. He also looks at seasonality, which could be a major factor for example in the natural gas market. Finally, Michael is currently bearish on gold and expects a pullback in the near future. We covered a lot of territory in our time together and were thrilled to visit with him! The Breakthrough Institute is a global research center that seeks innovative technological solutions to environmental and human development challenges. We enjoyed learning more about their areas of impact and in our discussion we also touched on Ted's observations on the current state of the environmental world, his recent article in Foreign Policy, the issues with denying developing countries resources and infrastructure to use fossil fuels, the impact of Ted's upbringing and background, which countries are funding developing nation's energy growth, nuclear as a prime example of technology that has both scale and impact, the deregulatory movement needed to fix seventies era environmental laws that are still in place, and much more. We could have continued for much longer and greatly appreciate Ted for joining. In our upfront discussion, Mike Bradley shared bond, commodity and equity performance from the past week noting the widest inversion of two and ten-year US government bond yields since 2000, natural gas pricing's tie to demand over the next few weeks, midterm elections, and COP 27. Colin Fenton zoned in on oil and gas prices, specifically the difference in probability for NYMEX and WTI prices over the next few weeks compared to 2023. We also had Veriten's nuclear champion Brett Rampal join for today's session. We hope you will enjoy the session as much as we did. Thanks to you all!

Tom welcomes a new guest, Michael Moor, to the show. Michael is an analyst with a fifteen-year career on the floor of the NYMEX. He now provides industry-leading analysis and directional calls in the Gold and Energy Markets. He explains the importance of using technical trading and why it normally leads fundamentals. Michael explains what led him to make the call for low oil prices back in 2020. Heating oil and gasoline lead crude oil about eighty percent of the time, which can be highly advantageous in trading. He explains some of his analysis for gold and how time frames influence his calls. Various formations are usually a gradual progression over different time frames that eventually result in a move. He feels the down move in the S&P this year is more of a bearish correction within the longer bull cycle. He gives us his analysis on where the equity markets may be heading. Should the S&P hold around this level, we could see a substantial move upwards. He also believes that energy will be moving to the upside. Lastly, he discusses crude spreads and how they can be a leading indicator. Understanding the inner workings of energy options can give a trader an enormous advantage. Dennis Davitt has spent more than 3 decades in option markets. Getting his start in the crude pit on the NYMEX, he soon thereafter moved to equity derivatives, a product he's run risk in across both the sell-side and buy-side through many cycles. Through our conversation, we learn of the strong appreciation for liquidity – especially as it relates to dynamic products like options – that Dennis has gained through the many vol events he has traded through, especially during his long tenure running equity derivatives at Credit Suisse. In his rendering, it is from these episodes that we see two consistent outcomes emerge. First that investors become overleveraged and second that books wind up mismarked in some way. Here he cites the concept of “liquidity delta”, a metric that incorporates the impact of one's own presence and that of similar participants in markets. Impressed by the efficiency of prices in US-listed option markets, Dennis sees little obvious opportunity to extract arbitrage profits. Instead, he sees option markets as a vehicle to produce an intended risk outcome. And here, we shift to the work that Dennis is doing as CIO of Millbank Dartmoor Portsmouth, a firm he founded in 2020 to provide a risk-managed equity alternative through an options overlay. We explore the factors driving the flat skew in S&P 500 options as Dennis contrasts today's setup versus that which drove the famous XIV blowup in early 2018.  I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Dennis Davitt.

US CPI Surprise - What it Means for US and Global Inflation

A Dash of Coldwater Economics

The US July CPI result was better than expected, with headline inflation moderating to 8.5% yoy (from 9.1% in June), mainly thanks to a 4.6% mom fall in energy costs. This was on the back of a 10.4% mom fall in Brent oil prices and a 8.5% mom fall in Nymex natural gas prices. It is not obvious this is being repeated in August: so far, on average oil prices have fallen a further 7.5% mom, but gas prices have rebounded 12.6% mom, and overall the CRB index, which fell 9.5% in July, is almost unchanged. Still, July's result is strong enough to allow us to scale back the likely inflationary trajectory in the US, with it now expected to peak at 9.1% in September, before drifting down to below 8% by end-2Q23. But two caveats. First, I'm fashioning these trajectories from the 6m deviation in 5yr seasonalized trends - but volatilities in CPI indexes during the last six months have been consistently dramatic (both above and below trend), and in some cases (UK) positively freakish. So even a 6m trend assumption isn't looking particularly stable month-on-month. Second, whilst inflationary pressures may be moderating in the US, they are only now beginning to show up in force in NE Asia. Overall, this means that my measure of global aggregate inflation continued to rise in July. . . .

John Paulson, a multi-fiat Fed note billionaire Wall Street trading legend, was interviewed on August 12th, 2021, and Bloomberg Wealth published these video clips this past week.  This famed, often highly leveraged derivative, a trader who helped his firm and investors net over $20 billion on a trade shorting the 2007/2008 housing market credit bust, had additional sharp insights on the parabolic future price climb for gold. The close to this week's silver and gold derivative trading hours ended on a positive note for bullion bulls. A massive near 500,000 jobs bolstered both respective silver spot price and gold spot prices in August 2021. The gold-silver ratio also fell firmly on the news, showing signs that derivative traders were seeking alpha by placing down additional silver derivative long bets.  Sideways spot price consolidations can wear people's excitement and patience out. But this last year to time for silver bulls like myself and the extended base we have been building signals tremendous upside energy likely ahead. And with fiat creationist cartels en route to doubling their ballooning balance sheets within the last two years, well, a reckoning in store of value confidence is what I continue actively betting on and saving against. This week we have some exciting news from various important gold stacking and even increasing commodity-price-discovering nations on the other side of the world. We'll begin with news out of China. Note the mentioning of shipping futures contracts and the massive escalating price squeeze ongoing for goods from China to the USA since the pandemic.  Much of these shipping price escalations have and will likely continue to be passed off to consumers with higher prices for goods coming out of China. Also, China is still the world's largest consumer of commodities, and it's not close in terms of the second-largest market buying most things critical for a quality modern lifestyle.  Pretty easy to guess that China wants to wrestle much commodity price discovery influence away from futures markets like the US-based COMEX and NYMEX to have her longer-term agenda more easily appeased.  Of course, Russia likely knows well the International Monetary Fund's Special Drawing Rights history. The SDR began in 1968 as a supposed gold-backed freely convertible supra-central banknote only to morph into year another complete fiat currency contrivance. The SDR fiat currency unit inputs basket has lost over 97% of its value to gold bullion. And the Russian Federation likely agrees that the SDR devaluation vs. bullion trend is not changing anytime soon. Gold market analysts Daniel March and Krishan Gopaul were quick to cite massive gold demand out of India for this past month of August 2021.  Remember how last week we mentioned Germany had almost imported 100 metric tonnes of gold in the first half of 2021? Well, India did that and more in August alone. India's most significant gold bullion buying nation f India is getting back on track, and it appears she is well open to importing 1,000 metric tonnes for the year.  This week Market Watch had an exciting story citing estimates that an additional 20% of undocumented smuggled gold moves into India annually — stashed inside wigs, jeans, shoes, and other body cavity regions. The reason for this at a large scale is the arbitrage of possibly avoiding the 7.5% duty and tax slapped onto both gold and silver bullion bar imports into India. A country that is preparing to launch trial programs for its fiat CBDC rupee late this year 2021. The Indian banking system is notorious for being insolvent and not writing down bad loans and debts, so moving to a fiat CBDC grid and killing cash is likely a high priority for the financial powers.  Finally, to close, I will leave a link to an interview I did yesterday with Tom from Palisades Radio. https://youtu.be/QHKOirpEkqc   In the interview, I go over a bit of what I am about to tell you. My recent less than 24 hours one day trip through Istanbul, Turkey, was eye-opening. The ancient and largest city on the European continent, with portions of it extending on the continent of Asia as well. About 16 million people live there at the moment.  And the majority of the people living there are suffering under severe currency devaluation and ongoing price inflation. Historically and currently, this part of the world has a massive gold trade, not merely in annual demand for high-grade gold jewelry manufacturing but also its growing gold refining capacities.  Increasingly too, as the Turkish lira continues devaluing, their demand for silver continually grows, as likely the poor man's gold is deemed a better value and with a reasonable price range.  In mid-2208, the Turkish lira was almost at par with the fiat Federal Reserve note, and now it takes over eight fiat lira to get one US dollar. So I went there with the express intention to buy some high-grade gold jewelry gifts in their world-famous Grand Bazaar. The trouble was they had a national holiday on August 30th, so I will have to return happily. Here's the point, I didn't get my high-grade gold jewelry gifts, but what I did get was some perspective of how lucky I am. That day I got to meet and sit with a young, charismatic Syrian refugee for a 15-minute tea, and we quickly got to the point where he mentioned how terrible his job was. He complained of having to work 12 hour days with no breaks and how his pay was demolished by ongoing lira price inflation. Never mind the fact that his home country was recently ravished by war.  I bet if you asked a lot of these people here, they would tell you similar or even possibly worse stories. You see, most of watching this video have been lucky, including me: Count, our blessings, That is all for this week's SD Bullion market update. As always, take great care of yourselves and those you love.

Hot Topics in Tech: What do you need to know about financial technology?   A technical glitch postponed the start of trading in futures and options contracts on Eurex by more than two hours, the latest in a run of breakdowns by exchanges. Exchanges around the world are avidly wooing high-frequency traders, those controversial speed demons of Wall Street. Despite the often explosive debate over this kind of trading in the U.S., bourses in Mexico, Turkey, South Africa and beyond are trying to lure HFT types to boost business. China, perhaps the last big obstacle to high-frequency trading achieving global dominance, where tight government rules, a stamp duty on stock trades and market inefficiency have so far kept out the algobots. High frequency share trading, which favors “predatory strategies that queue jump institutional and retail investors”, is having a toxic effect on Australia financial markets, according to researchers at the Business School. NY AG preps case against Credit Suisse dark pool - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is preparing a civil case against Credit Suisse AG (CS). CMEs power of electronic trading let it acquire Nymex: The importance of technology was demonstrated again when CME saved Nymex from disappearing. A new report by regulators admits that there was an unusual amount of “self-trading” leading up to the October 15 bond market flash crash. The Treasury market, officially, had its own flash crash. The Inbox: Listener questions and comments Question from GG: Has there ever been talk of some sort of technology glitch or shutdown futures? In the wake of the NYSE problems it seems there would be a fertile market for such a product. Firms could hedge themselves against system risk. Please discuss. Question from Eli Minn: Good discussion of the NYSE meltdown. I came away from it agreeing that tech actually saved the day. I guess fragmentation is good for something after all. Question from TJD: I know you guys were joking when you talked about HFT boats and blimps. But has there been any serious application of drone tech in the trading world? I have seen them used for combat, photography, movie-making, science experiments and more. Why not trading?
