Jamie Hagen's got the inside scoop, but won't divulge the name of the new Mack tractor model set to be debuted next month in New York in this year of Mack's 125th anniversary as a company. Small Fleet owner Hagen has actually driven one hand-built production model already around the company's test track hidden behind the walls, and come June he expects to be leasing one of the first production units in an arrangement with Mack's marketing arm -- it'll add to his all-Mack fleet, South Dakota-headquartered Hell Bent Xpress, among finalists in 2024 for Overdrive's Small Fleet Championship: https://www.overdriveonline.com/small-fleet-champ/article/15704803/small-fleet-champ-four-finalists-to-square-off The new truck will add 1 to Hell Bent's power-unit count, currently sitting where it was back when we last spoke around the Small Fleet Champ program's conclusion in November, at 9 trucks, so there's big things ahead for Hagen and Hell Bent, no doubt. Yet the new Mack wasn't the principal reason we brought him in for this edition of Overdrive Radio -- rather, the forward-looking small fleet owner happens to be the first U.S. owner to install a new-to-the-U.S. auxiliary air-conditioning unit in the sleeper of one of his Macks. That's the Fresco 9000 MaXX system built by an Italian manufacturer and powered by U.S.-based Dragonfly Energy's Battle Born Batteries Lithium Iron Phosphate battery to deliver cooling power in the warmer months: https://www.overdriveonline.com/gear/product/15684579/autoclima-fresco-9000-maxx-batterypowered-auxiliary-ac-unit-hitting-us-shores Hagen walks through the unit's design and, along the way, his rationale for jumping into the modular, portable system after years forgoing alternative A/C for his mostly upper Midwest regional fleet. (Yes, he's got auxiliary heat in the form of Webasto bunk heaters.) If you'll be in attendance at the big Mid-America Trucking Show later this month, too, Hagen will be part of a panel discussion opening the event on Thursday, March 27, about small trucking business issues. It also features a past Overdrive Small Fleet Champ in Silver Creek Transportation's Jason Cowan, among many others: https://truckingshow.com/opening-breakfast/ Hear more about that in the podcast, likewise the story of how a 2023 Mack Anthem in the small fleet of Hell Bent Xpress came to be the first truck to get an install of the Fresco 9000 MaXX battery-powered alternative air conditioning system, performed by the way by Jim Fowler and his team at Michigan MD Alignment. Jim Fowler is Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Nationwide. In this role, he is responsible for the company's technology strategy, IT capabilities and business transformation programs. Prior to joining Nationwide in 2018, Jim was Chief Information Officer for General Electric, where he led the company's global information technology strategy, services, operations and internal digital transformation program. Prior to his 18-year career at GE, he held IT roles with NCR and Accenture. Jim holds a bachelor of science degree in management information systems and marketing from Miami University and a master of business administration degree from Xavier University. He is also a certified Six Sigma Black Belt. He is well recognized for his results-oriented leadership style and his ability to drive innovation—and was recently recognized by Forbes with the CIO Innovation Award. Highlights from the Show Jim came to Nationwide after 18 years at GE, where he was most recently CIO, and was not interested in a role in insurance when he was approached about Nationwide He was swayed when he learned how forward-thinking the company was When interviewing, Jim learned about how the company has always been innovative, including using projected slide shows in client presentations in the 1900s before mixed media and AV was even considered for things like that Jim identified three reasons why Nationwide has been highly innovative despite its size and complexity Leadership that is willing to disrupt what they've done to protect their relevance in the future, regardless of how long they've done it for or how successful they may have been before Mutuality helps them make decisions that protect their members into the future Technology is about becoming the preferred partner for customers and intermediaries, giving people the space to focus on people They've been able to move faster on innovative ideas because of how they structure innovation The team has dual-reporting to Jim and their Chief Strategy Officer They incubate ideas within the innovation team to try the idea free of the constraints of the bigger business and make a go-no-go decision after giving something a real try If it passes the initial test, then they can move it to the business at large That is, innovation is thought of as incubation Jim sees a future where insurance will be more personalized for each customer, given data they give you permission to use to serve them Regulators want us to figure this out, we just need to show them how this benefits consumers He also sees a shift to coverage being fluid across people's lives , with more telematics-driven options in various coverages rather than seeing Auto separate from Life from Home, etc This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance thought leadership series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Angie Klett is Senior Vice President of Corporate Development leading Ventures, Mergers & Acquisitions, Strategic Partnerships, and Brokerage Solutions. This set of shared Enterprise competencies focuses on investing in, buying or divesting, and partnering with outside parties to create enterprise value. The team is focused on new ways to acquire customers and partnering to share capabilities, such as data and technology. Corporate Development advances and enhances near term business outcomes while also conducting tests as building blocks into the future. Previously, Angie served as IT CFO and Chief Procurement Officer (CPO). As CFO, she was a strategic business partner to Jim Fowler, Enterprise Chief Technology Officer, providing financial planning and reporting on the $1B+ IT budget. Since a great deal of technology spend is sourced externally from suppliers, there was a tight link to Angie's responsibilities as CPO, where she led $4B of strategic sourcing and procurement for Nationwide. Angie began her career as an accountant in the financial services side of Nationwide. She has spent half her career in the property and casualty business and half in various finance roles. In the property and casualty business, Angie held leadership positions across sales and service centers, marketing, and product management. She has held roles in corporate finance, as well as property and casualty finance. Angie holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University, a Chartered Financial Consultant designation, and is a CPA. She currently serves on the governance committee for Berger Ohio Health and holds a seat on the finance committee of Ohio Health. Highlights from the Show Angie is responsible for things in the Build, Buy and Partner side. Corporate Development, which includes M&A, Partnerships and Ventures Nationwide has been an early and bold mover on partnering with OEM car makers on connected insurance This includes partnerships with Ford, Rivian and others Nationwide modernized their core system, moving it to the cloud, allowing them to launch 55 partners on their new platform and the API library they've built on it They have 385 internal APIs and 52 public APIs that allow a partner to go all the way through API Those APIs get over 10 billion pings annually It also allows them to manage things like PCI compliance for payment, or other regulatory considerations that need to be handled at different moments of the process When a customer is in the partner journey, the partner brand is front and central, and then once the insurance is in place, Nationwide's brand is central to the insurance experience We talked about why a car maker would want to embed insurance, and it's not about the commission or marketing consideration they'd earn, but rather the impact on the customer experience of problems securing insurance or an embedded insurance experience that isn't good enough The take rate on the partnerships has been very strong, but the experience and the customer's level of trust in the process dictates the adoption The customer will dictate the speed of adoption and what ways of working will prevail, not us, so we need the flexibility to learn from what they want and provide it, adjusting as their desires change Retention and cross-sell have also performed better than expected Nationwide has explicit learning plans when they partner, and this has allowed them to find new offerings and new products that their openness allows them to see and respond to, like their recent partnership with Assurant on digital coverage verification What does embedded mean to agent distribution? Angie says that we need to let customer dictate how they want to transact, and some will definitely want agent help no matter what That means carriers need to support agents as they become more digital so they can support customers as needs evolve and change In terms of the future, customers will set the pace and adoption rate, and if we can meet their needs as they arise, that transition will be easier for us But trust will be critical, so we need to meet the true needs as they're really being asked for rather than how we want To respond to that means having the flexibility in your platform to respond to each opportunity and have the customization in how you deploy it to meet that specific partnership's needs; if you try to build a new solution each time, you'll find that the economics never work out, but if you lack the ability to really customize efficiently, you'll also fail because you won't meet the market needs This episode is brought to you by Guidewire Software (guidewire.com). This is a super exciting episiode - not because Chris and Ari are back together in the same office for the first time in over a month, but because they're joined by a super cool guest, Zoo Miami's Ron Magill! Ron shares a bunch of great stories from his history in the zoo field: meeting and becoming good friends with Jim Fowler, reflecting on the lessons learned from 27 years of being watched by 10 million people a week on the biggest TV show in the world, how an experience breaking zoo policies on live TV lead to him becoming their spokesperson, and how a very special relationship with an incredible couple had a massive impact on Ron and the zoo's conservation efforts. Not even kidding, all three of us were crying! If you have a question or a topic you'd like us to discuss on the show, let us know at podcast@naturalencounters.com!
Ron is.............THE MAN at the zoo. Born in New York City, his father a Cuban immigrant, and his mother the daughter of Colombian and German immigrants, he always loved animals, and initially wanted to be a veterinarian. After his family moved down to Florida in 1972 to live on a farm and raise horses in addition to mangos & avocados, he was truly exposed to the raw outdoors. His first job with animals was at the Miami Serpentarium, and his senior year at UF, he was offered the job of zookeeper for the zoo in Crandon Park in Key Biscayne. His first big mentor was Jim Fowler, a side host for the show "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom", who taught him even more about carrying forward a sense of play and wonder with the animals. After being hired as zookeeper for the Miami Zoo, he eventually stared his own endowment, the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment, raising millions of dollars to support high tech equipment for conservation efforts, & enabling youth with scholarships in the field. If he had a billion dollars, he would invest it in the education and sustainable work opportunities of those living in developing countries very near to precious animal reserves. A strong believer in holding up our promise to the urban development line in Miami, he is passionate about preservationism and has many close friends to thank for his progress thus far. Follow him on IG @ronmagillwildlife and listen closely to the episode, to hear some of Ron's favorite underrated spots to see wildlife, in both South Florida and his favorite getaway spot, Africa. He is the man behind the Lion King. Thank you Ron.
What Makes Big Cat Rescue the Cat's Pajamas? Big Cat Rescue is the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated entirely to abused and abandoned big cats. The nonprofit sanctuary began in 1992 and is home to more than 100 exotic big cats. The cats at Big Cat Rescue are here for a variety of reasons, including: • Abandoned by owners who wrongly thought they would make good pets • Abused by owners in order to force them to perform • Retired from performing acts • Saved from being slaughtered to make fur coats • Rescued as babies after hunters killed their mothers Big Cat Rescue has many species of cats, many of whom are threatened, endangered or extinct now in the wild, including: Tigers, Lions, Leopards, Cougars, Bobcats, Lynx, Servals, Ocelots, Caracals Big Cat Rescue's mission is to provide the best possible home for the animals in our care and try to stop the flow of exotic cats needing sanctuary by educating the public about the plight of the animals and supporting stronger laws to protect them. This award winning sanctuary is situated on 55 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa. Our IRS Federal ID# is 59-3330495. Our 990s are available online at GuideStar.org with a complete breakdown of how your donations are spent. We are: • Accredited by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries • Certified by Independent Charities of America as a “Best in America Charity” • A Member of the World Society for Protection of Animals • Rated 4 Stars by Charity Navigator (their highest rating) and has the highest score of any animal based charity The high profile good that is being done by Big Cat Rescue has inspired awards such as: PC Magazine Names Big Cat Rescue in Top 12 Favorite Charities 2011 Big Cat Rescue, which takes in retired circus lions and tigers, also rescues other big cats from people who tried to keep them as pets, and otherwise offers sanctuary to large cats that are not eligible for release into the wild. It's focused on educating people about the unsuitability of the animals as pets, working toward passing laws against roadside zoos, and shutting down breeding programs like the exotic pet trade. They also take in injured wild cats and rehabilitate them for release. The group has a video cam set up in the sanctuary, and they regularly post videos of the big cats. The cats eat a massive amount every day, naturally, so Big Cat Rescue relies on donations and paid tour groups to support them.—Arielle Rochette PC Magazine Thanks to all of you who voted for Big Cat Rescue, we won the People's Choice Award at the WEDU Be More Awards! Big Cat Rescue won against 90 contenders for the People's Choice Award. WEDU has a viewing audience that includes 16 central Florida counties. Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. Jumanji Leopard and Our Evolution of Thought I suspect that our tour guides just don't know what to say about Jumanji the black leopard because I often overhear people saying, or I read in some article that Jumanji came from the pet trade. His story online and in the Safari Guide is below and does not say that, even though it is true in a sense. Jumanji's parents, Sabre and Lola were pets who were rescued by Big Cat Rescue but Jumanji was born here on 2/23/96. Back then we didn't know any better and the people who advised us were breeders who said these were endangered species (true) and that they should be bred for conservation purposes (false). By 1997 we had figured out that none of the wild cats in private hands were part of the Species Survival Plans (SSP) and thus could never be used for any legitimate conservation breeding program. That is why we stopped breeding cats in 1997. We had a few accidents in the first couple of years after that as we were trying to get all of the cats separated, spayed and neutered. Like TrickE and MrE the Amur Leopard Cats whose parents were in their late teens and thought too old to breed, Windstar Bobcat who was born to a hybrid father, who should have been sterile as the result of being a lynx hybrid, and the bearcats Mocha, Bean and Thing whose parents had been separated. We later discovered that binturongs are delayed ovulators meaning they can get pregnant but not have the babies until conditions are optimal. (Thank goodness, because we thought they might be the result of immaculate conception and that would have really messed with some of our religious beliefs.) I use Jumanji's stop as a way to introduce guests to our evolution of thought. While people are captivated by his beauty I say, “Big Cat Rescue was not always what it is today. Jumanji was born here in ‘96 because in the early years we were told that these were rare and endangered species that should be bred for future generations. What we learned was that none of the wild cats in private hands will ever be bred for return to the wild. In fact, the more we came to learn about these magnificent cats, the more we realized that they don't belong in cages at all. They were designed to roam hundreds of square miles and it is cruel to confine them to cages measured in square feet. As a result, we stopped breeding in 1997 and began working on ways to end the abuses that cause so many beautiful cats like Jumanji to end up in cages.” This helps you set the stage for later questions when people ask about cats on the tour path who were born here. We don't post on their signs or on the website that they were born here because if a person only lands on that page, or only notices that sign, they may come away with the belief that it is OK to breed cats for lives of confinement. We need to be sure they get the whole answer. I have also heard people say that he was Jamie's pet, but in 1996 when he was born, Jamie was 16 and was feverishly working to complete high school two years early because she was needed so badly at the sanctuary to help with all of the cats. The kittens had to be fed every two hours for weeks, then every four hours, then every six. Jumanji and Black Magic were litter mates and Magic was a stargazer and very ill and hard to feed. Auroara the tiger was a cub (not born here) at that time as were some servals, caracals and bobcats. Jamie was feeding all of them around the clock. There were some high profile cases where Jamie walked Jumanji on a leash, including the People Magazine article, one in the Palm Beach Post and then at a fundraiser in Chicago for the Cheetah Conservation Fund. We used to tell the story, which is pretty funny, about the latter, but don't any more because we don't want people to think that they too could walk a leopard on a leash. It was a bad idea then and we know better now. This was the story that we don't share on tours but I kept in my diary: It had to be late 1997 or 1998 (maybe even as late as 1999) that we were invited to bring Jumanji Leopard, Hercules the Snow Leopard and Jayla Cougar to a fundraiser in Chicago for Laurie Marker Kraus' Cheetah Conservation Fund. Later I would come to hate that she unwittingly promotes the extinction of cheetahs by promoting images of herself treating cheetahs as if they could be pets. The event was at the Imperial Hotel and Mel Gibson was there filming a movie (Maybe What Women Want?) and staying at the Imperial. Jamie spent most of the night walking Jumanji up and down the hallways hoping for a glimpse of the actor. One funny moment happened when a man, clearly drunk, saw Jumanji and yelled to his wife that there was a black panther in the hall. The wife called him a drunk and told him to go to bed. He kept insisting so Jamie moved to the next floor. The event was a black tie gala where Jim Fowler wanted an array of wild animals to be brought on stage where he would pontificate on them and the need for funding the Cheetah Conservation Fund. Our cats were NOT trained my the methods others used (such as starvation, beating, cattle prods and such). Our cats were allowed to pretty much be cats and we were just happy if they didn't bite anyone. We get to the event room to practice and are told that Jumanji has to be walked down a spiral staircase, then across the ballroom floor, past a grand piano and huge, velvet theater drapes to a table. Then he's supposed to jump up onto the table, stand there while Jim Fowler talks, and when dismissed, the cat is to hop off the table and exit stage right. Jamie decides right then that she's going to have to wear her hiking boots under her flowing, full length gown, because Jumanji is going to see all of this as a huge playground. Sure enough, during practice, he's leaping off the spiral staircase, dragging Jamie by the leash. He jumps on the piano, leaps into the velvet curtains before taking her practically skiing behind him all over the room. All of this while it's just Jamie, Judy Watson and me in the room. We know that adding a couple hundred people, in sparkly attire and bird feathers boas and hats is going to make matters even worse. Hercules and Jayla are far less rowdy, and we go through the motions with them, except they aren't going to do the staircase thing. They will have to enter from stage left. That's OK. Jamie will make the grand entry meant to awe the audience into silent check writing. We practice for hours. Jumanji is having the time of his life, as are Hercules and Jayla. We are wondering if we should bow out or take the chance of the evening being an utter fiasco. The event time comes and we are all sweating bullets. I'm watching from stage right, as Jamie and Jumanji descend that spiral staircase as if the cat were computer generated to do exactly what was requested. He passed by the previously undeniable call of the piano and curtains, walks right up to the table and hops to his spot. Jamie and I look at each other is total disbelief! Jim Fowler does his talk and indicates to Jamie to walk Jumanji off the table to where I am standing in the wings. Jumanji is just LOVING the attention of everyone in the audience and has no intention of leaving. Jamie tries pulling, pushing, coaxing and the crowd starts to laugh as Jim makes some comment about the cat's love of the spotlight. Now it's getting crazy and that cat isn't budging. I do the only thing I know a wild cat can't resist. I turn my back and crouch down to the floor. In an instant Jumanji leaps off the table for my back, and all I can hope is that Jamie has a good enough grip on the leash and sense of balance to keep the three of us from rolling out into the audience in a brawling blood bath. Jamie manages to keep her balance and grip, if not her composure. We both know what a dumb move that was but it got Jumanji off the table. That was the last time we took our cats out to a fundraiser, I think. JUMANJI Male Leopard DOB 2/23/96 Since he is one of the first black leopards you see at the sanctuary, Jumanji is used to quite a bit of attention. Most days, he can be found in the shadiest part of his cat-a-tat lounging on his fern-covered tree log. It is very easy to see how well black leopards camouflage themselves in the jungle since most people walk right by without noticing him there. People magazine certainly noticed Jumanji though. His photo was featured in an article written about Big Cat Rescue. Jumanji is also known as quite the superstar achiever in our Operant Conditioning Program. He learns very quickly and always wants to please, especially when treats are involved. If the keeper is not quick enough with the reward, Jumanji will offer other behaviors to see if maybe the keeper wants something else. He makes it easy to capture and reward other behaviors, which he will then subsequently remember. The adage that leopards have the longest memories truly applies to Jumanji. On 2/3/09 Panther International pledged to donate $20,000 to Jumanji's life time care. I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. Larry Battson is our guest. He is a long-time wildlife educator and a long-time creative Bigfoot researcher. On June 9, 2009, Larry gave a lecture to the US Fish & Wildlife Service on his research on the Bigfoot/Sasquatch.For 40 plus years, he has traveled across the country, educating all ages about our natural world. He has lectured for the Audubon Society, Explorer’s Club, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. One of his proudest moments is the presentations he has done for thousands of schools and countless lectures with his animal family along with Jim Fowler, star of Mutual of Omaha’s WILD KINGDOM. It was over breakfast in Columbus, Georgia, that Jim was telling Larry about his recent trip to Russia to do a special with ABC Television on the Russian brown bear. All the Russian guides wanted to talk about was their sightings of the Russian Sasquatch. Inspired by their discussion, Larry developed an exhibit on the Bigfoot/Sasquatch for a major outdoor show in Cleveland, Ohio.Which included having the noted Sasquatch investigator and writer John Green come to Cleveland for the event. John and Larry would establish a friendship that lasted until John’s passing.Later, John Green and Bob Gimlin would be guests on Larry’s Blog Talk Show, “WILD WORLD.” This is the only time that the two appeared together in an interview. John Green said that it was the most important moment since the Patterson-Gimlin film in Bigfoot research.
Sackboy, A Big Aventure is the newest game in the Little Big Planet series. In this launch title created by Sumo Digital for Sony's Play Station 5, Sackboy sets off on a quest to rescue his friends who have been kidnapped by the evil Vex and forced to work on his diabolical Topsy-Turver. Sumo Digital Audio Director and composer Jay Waters and composer Joe Thwaites say the huge scope of the game and the all-star line-up of the other composers who contributed made this a really enjoyable project. Jay and Music Director James Marshall worked with a roster of incredible media composers, including Lena Raine, Brian D'Oliveira, Winifed Phillips, Nick Foster and Jim Fowler. Each of them had their own part of the world in the game to create a musical signature; Winifred wrote music for the bubbly, underwater levels, and Brian for the Amazon region, for example. This gave the composers freedom to create their own sound within the larger world. Sackboy, A Big Adventure has been nominated by the

This week I chat with Jim Fowler about Little Orpheus, Sackboy and a lot more…
Special guests include Jim Fowler, Jannelle Iaquinto, Adam Zaccara '95, and Matt Hird.
I have so much work to do, but I feel that it is important to log these coincidences now in case they amount to something later. I got home last night from a week in Chicago for the Friends of Conservation hosted by Ruetie Butler Kent and Jim Fowler. Judy Watson and Jamie had left last Wednesday in an extended van, but said it overheated in Bushnell and that the mechanic said it would be $650.00 to repair. I took Dad, Kenny Farr and Tom Watson up there with my Jeep and Don's Dodge van with the intention of moving everything out of the bigger van down into the smaller van and my jeep and taking two cars to Chicago. We were able to cram everything in to the one van and I sent my jeep back. The water pump which was only a few months old, failed on the jeep's return to Tampa. Dad and Kenny Farr worked on the jeep and began to make some frightening discoveries. When the jeep first started overheating this summer, I asked Don to fix it and he told me and Kenny Farr that it couldn't be fixed and kept asking me to drive the silver station wagon (The 600.00 car with no title). The kids like to drive the wagon, because it has more seats for more kids, and Don said that the brakes were bad and he was repairing them one day as I walked past the shed. The brakes had never been bad before, but they felt different than my brakes so I did not question it any further, like to ask why he was doing the repair, when he always pays the old man next door (James Jennings) to do this kind of stuff. When he got through, Don went looking for Jamie and told her that he had fixed the wagon and that it was safe now and they could ride it any time they wanted. She and her friends were a little leery of the car after that because Don had not wanted them driving it before and he would never have cared about their safety. I remember the night before Don disappeared how anxious he was to bring that car home at four in the morning when it had overheated on me. There was no reason why it could not have set there until the following morning when Kenny Farr could have wreckered it in on his way to work. If Don knew he was going somewhere very early Monday, why did he bother with the car so late? Monday morning when I blew the engine up on interstate in the silver wagon, I called Kenny Farr to wrecker it in. It was then that he discovered Don had completely removed two of the brakes and had sabotaged the remaining brake assembly. In the meanwhile, I had asked Kenny Farr for a second opinion on my jeep and he had told me he could fix it for $24.00 with a water pump. I had bought the pump and had him install it, and when Don found out he went into a rage and kept telling Kenny Farr that my jeep could not be fixed and that he didn't want Kenny Farr to touch the car. I paid Kenny Farr on the side to do it anyway while Don was gone. The water pump fixed the overheating problem and I had started to use the jeep again. Before the water pump scene, Jamie had noticed while following me home from church, that I had no brake lights and I asked Don to fix them. He told me that he had Kenny Farr do it. I did not check behind him. Again, before the water pump scene, one of the volunteers told me I had no brake lights. I asked Don about it and he started blaming Kenny Farr and saying that he had specifically told Kenny Farr to fix the lights and that he would take care of it. He never did, but he lied to me again and told me they were operating just fine when we checked them out. I stepped on the brakes and Don said he could see them light up. When Kenny Farr worked on the water pump, I meant to ask him to check out the brake lights, but forgot to. Just recently, someone said that I didn't have brake lights, so I asked Kenny Farr to fix them and I drove extra carefully in the meanwhile. Driving to Bushnell, I told Tom Watson, who would be driving my jeep back to Tampa, if we didn't need it, that he should be careful because my brake lights were still out. When they returned to Tampa and began working on the car, Kenny Farr and Dad disassembled the entire brake system, from the lens caps to the dashboard and under the hood. What they discovered is that someone had cut the power lines to both brake lights and had re-taped them to disguise the fact that one of each dual line had been severed. Who ever had done this had gone to the extra bother to just barely connect the lines so that if a tester was used under the hood, it would give the appearance of power to the lights, but the least little jolt (in this case slamming the hood) was enough to disconnect the lines that had just been slid in place, but not attached. Only Don would have had the time to do so much to my car without anyone thinking about him messing under the hood. Then there is the thing with the mobile home that Don bought for my parents next door. Jamie's house where Don insisted she was only to have space heaters (used ones at that) and no central heat or air. The gas dryer outside and gas oven inside that would make a good excuse for an accident. The fact that I cannot escape the house, all windows are screwed shut and the gates around the yard could be locked as well. The blue metal bender falling right where Dad was working and Don pulling his van in the way to keep my Dad and I from being able to exit without walking right into the path of the falling ton of metal. The crane dropping the tree at my feet and then taking out the fence. In retrospect, I think Don was swinging it at me and it just fell short. Little Orpheus , created by the award-winning studio The Chinese Room, is set in the Soviet Union in 1962. Sure, there's a space race, but "interior-naut" Ivan Ivanovich is being interrogated for his journey to the center of the earth, in charge of a nuclear device, the Little Orpheus, which has mysteriously disappeared. Ivan spins a fantastic tale about his adventures for his Siberian general, who may or may not believe him. Composer Jim Fowler worked with BAFTA Award-winning composer Jessica Curry to craft a soundtrack that's inspired by film music of Shostakovich, Disney, and even The Wizard of Oz! Jim says the lovable character of Ivan, and the gorgeous art created by the Chinese Room gave him and Jessica plenty of inspiration. The soundtrack was recorded at the legendary AIR Studios in London. Long before they arrived at the session, Jim and Jessica gave the studio a "wish list" of the performers they wanted to use. Because they put their requests in so far in advance, they were

Mardi Dickinson is the founder and CEO of KymryGroup a digital media company that focuses on social marketing and photography. Mardi has decades of experience in the advertising, photography and publishing industries. She is also the owner, host and producer of BirdCallsRadio and the BirdCallsRadio podcast. This is a journalistic platform with guests that talk about wild birds and conservation. Her practical knowledge of digital systems and culture enabled her to blend smart content creation with a promotional scheme critical to her current success. She is also a prolific and widely published photographer who has worked on the inside of the photography and publishing business. She has two master's degrees one in photography and one in marketing. We talk about how Mardi got involved in bird watching and how podcasting was a natural transformation for her. In spite of this, she still faced challenges. She shares these challenges along with great advice for new podcasters. She also shares her world class equipment list and setup. We also get to learn about migratory birds and songbirds. Mardi shares some of her favorite birds to spot and one she is yet to find. She also shares her favorite places for bird watching. We talk about the challenges of tackling a small niche, and Mardi’s vision of overcoming that. We also talk about photography and our nostalgia for old school film developing. Darkrooms and all. Mardi shares how she is a conservationist and historian. She uses her work to share the history of conservation with future generations. She even has a legacy podcast series of important conservationists that have passed on. All of Mardi’s guests are her favorites, but she shares a little about a couple of special guests. Mardi is doing important work that will benefit future generations. Show Notes: [03:48] Mardi's mom was an author of children's books and a professional photographer. They lived in the country, and Mardi loved being outdoors. [04:51] Her family also went on outdoor adventures on weekends. [05:57] She was in front of the camera a lot but preferred being behind the camera. Her first picture was published in a local paper when she was 15. [06:54] In high school, she was the editor of the yearbook and paper. She also did side projects. [07:06] She has two master's degrees one in photography and one in marketing. She also mentored with several well known artists. [08:21] Darrell and Mardi both miss the old days of darkrooms. [10:04] Mardi's husband is also a photographer. On dates, they would go bird watching. [11:39] She became fascinated at the behavior of birds. It became an obsession. [12:28] BirdCallsRadio started in 2011. Mardi took the show over from a partner. She changed the focus and made it interview based. [14:06] There aren't very many podcasts about wild birds and conservation. She knew that if she positioned it correctly and was patient, the podcast would get the attention it should. [15:04] Mardi is a historian and has several very important archived calls. She wants to share the stories of those who have lived lives that we haven't known. She wants to leave information about conservation for generations. [16:50] The podcast is about more than wild birds. It's about conservation as a whole. The purpose is to show us where we came from in order to know where to go. [18:44] One of Mardi's first legacy podcast was with Chandler Robbins. The work he did with migratory songbirds and the effect of DDT changed history. He passed away in 2016. [19:43] Jim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was also one of her interviews. [22:00] Mardi interviews in person and knows a lot about gear. [22:22] She has a studio at her office with a Soundcraft mixer. She has monitor speakers. She has a JK audio phone connector. She has been using Skype, but is changing soon. Probably to SquadCast. [23:18] On location, she uses a Sound Devices audio recorder. She wants to have the best content that she can have with very good audio quality. She can also use Skype and her iPhone. She also uses a Roland R-05 handheld recorder with a dynamic mic. [24:55] She uses condenser mics in her studio. [27:44] She wanted great sound and bought great equipment. [29:13] A challenged Mardi faced was understanding there is a learning curve you just have to go through. She had to find her rhythm. [30:25] It's helpful to line up 10 shows ready to go, because there is so much to do. Having an editing team like PPS saves time and money. [32:44] She is planning on adding a guest scheduler. She does like to send personalized emails. Finding guests is the most time consuming. [35:34] In the spring, she loves to bird in Northwest Ohio. There's a migratory track there. It's on the edge of Lake Erie. She also loves Cape May, New Jersey. [37:56] She would like to go back to Africa, Alaska, the Galapagos, and the Pantanal in Brazil. [38:47] Atlantic Puffins are really cute. She hopes to one day see a Laysan Albatross. There are thousands in Midway Atoll. [41:16] Mardi defines success as doing the work. Audience interaction and comments are also success. [42:08] She's working on doing speaking engagements and covering events. She also has Sunday School bird watching for kids in the spring and the fall. [43:18] She might be developing another podcast for her other business. [45:24] Darrell's Takeaways: Mardi uses BirdCallsRadio to leave a historical record of those working in conservation for future generations. She uses world class gear. Mardi recommends doing test interviews before the regular production. Start with a buffer of at least five episodes. You know my friend the Senator has a lot going on this summer… he’s on a Marriage retreat, he’s preparing for a 12 day hike around the Lake Tahoe rim trail and in that preparation he tells us about an encounter with a snake and somehow he thinks that if a poisonous snake bites you it dies. Seriously… again, the word Moron is in the name of this show for a reason. Somehow this snake story brings up Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Remember that show? Was it on Saturday afternoons or Sunday afternoons? With Marlon Perkins sitting in the helicopter while Jim Fowler did all the goddamn work wrestling the alligators and boa constrictors. Then we wrap up with a parenting story where the tough love has to prevail. We hate doing it but sometimes being a parent is not a popularity contest. It’s Rattlesnakes, Wild Kingdom and Water Polo on the Modern Moron! Thanks for listening.

ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for September 9, 2018* * *Dear Folks -I called the talk I offered in Ordinary Life this week -Setting a Trap To Be Captured By The SacredDualistic mind wants to capture things - ideas, beliefs, God, etc. Non-dual mind knows that this is neither wise or useful. My main goal in this talk was to address the question of how we can avoid being captured by the, largely unconscious, archetypes that are running and ruining this culture. In the hope of offering a "road map” for navigating the territory between the “no-longer” and the “not-yet,” I offered two models of faith development: that of Jim Fowler’s work and the “cosmic egg” as presented by Richard Rohr. We can use these to take advantage of the opportunity we have to respond to the invitation into Wisdom so that we can find the restful liberation that is the gift of the journey. The goal of our work is to experience the love that delivers us from the illusion that the outcome of any situation is the truth about us.That is a very brief summary of the talk offered this week in Ordinary Life. You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, listen to the audio of the talk and/or watch the video of the talk using the links below. If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.Be well and much love,Bill KerleyTo read or download the text of the talk, click here.To view or download the presentation slides of the talk, click here.To listen to the audio of the talk, which is somewhat different from the text, or view the video of the talk, use the links below. In college he organized nonviolent actions against army the vietnam war. In his early years, there was no set notion of what it meant to be a leader, but rather it was something imposed on the individual. Learning to make sense with greater complexity deals with deepening your meaning making. Kegan's work Orders of Mind can help you understand how people understand the world. Mark described that there is an evolutionary process of further developing your ability to make meaning in the world. Kegan's Orders of Mind can be more deeply understood via this Stanford Article and The Developmental Observer Blog. Orders of Mind in a Religious Notion Mark worked with congregation members who were head of law firms, hospitals, and small businesses. The main issue congregation members faced was where they stood as individuals in their faith. It was not uncommon for ministers coming out of seminaries who studied the bible to whole heartedly believe the dogma that was prescribed. These young ministers easily got into arguments regarding interpretations, as it sometimes differed from how they were told to interpret the texts. Understanding where someone is in their meaning making system (in the example of the ministers, in a socialized mind) can help you understand how they see the world. Essential to Supporting Leaders' Development The most important thing to keep in mind in supporting another's development, comes from understanding the context they are coming from. This paired with an understanding of their emotional and cognitive processes they are going through at their level of development. You want to give them opportunity to cultivate opportunities to develop in their life real. Mark described one of his clients who imagined an imaginary scorecard. This scorecard identified what it meant to be a good minister. Some of Mark's work with this client supported his ability to help him look deeply at his assumptions, and begin to test them. How do assumptions hold people back from being more successful? In terms of the pastor, the scorecard was unrealistic. It sustained a level of judging himself that made his work seem like a “hopeless task”. After a good amount of coaching, the pastor realized that , he couldn't do everything that the parish wanted, but he could be helpful in his own way. The pastor developed an increasing level of self-compassionate, in the pastor's words it allowed him to “see a bigger world”. Does it get easier in facing up to deep seated assumptions/fears? In some moments it does and in others not so much. Jim Fowler was an American theologian who was Professor of Theology and Human Development at Emory University. He is credited with developing Communities of Developmental Expectations and Stages of Faith. You can find Mark at http://www.daltoncornercoaching.com/
Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom television show during the 1970s inspired so many people I have interviewed, including myself, to fall in love with wildlife. If you aren’t familiar with this show, (maybe you are too young!) it was a show bringing adventure, exotic animals, and different cultures into our American living rooms every week. Marlin Perkins, a zoologist, and his partner, Jim Fowler, also a zoologist, would travel the world to educate us about an exotic animal in a faraway land. (Often, I believe, Jim was usually the one to risk life and limb to get close to some dangerous animal). This show was my gateway “drug” show to reading Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen, watch Born Free over and over and learning to sketch leopards and elephants in great detail. Our podcast guest May 15th, Dr. Andrew Stein, an Assistant Professor at Landmark College, was also influenced by Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and other wildlife documentaries growing up in central Massachusetts. He didn’t believe he would ever have the chance to visit places in Africa to see big cats, elephants and more. That all changed when entered the School of Field Studies and was able to travel to Kenya. It was in Kenya where he began to see a confluence of his interests with culture, wildlife, and conservation. Now Dr. Stein is one of the leading experts in leopard conservation. His passion drove him to create CLAWS Conservancy in 2014; where CLAWS stands for - Communities Living Among Wildlife Sustainably. CLAWS is collaborating with many communities in Africa and the US where there is potential human-wildlife conflict. His goal is to problem solve with these communities to find a way where wildlife and people can coexist peacefully. In this episode we are talking about edible cutlery and huge Kickstarter success with crowdfunder Sarah Munir. ‘Edible’ and ‘Cutlery’ are two words that don’t normally go together and yet this is a remarkable idea that may play a significant role in reducing toxic, plastic waste. In India alone, it’s estimated that 120 billion pieces of disposable plastic cutlery are thrown away each year. So, the invention of edible, biodegradable cutlery provides an alternative that’s good for everyone. Our guest on Crowd Scene today is Sarah Munir, the US representative of the Indian team behind edible cutlery, which recently hit the big time with this idea on Kickstarter. The edible cutlery product is called “Bakeys” – which is a reference to the production technique. Sarah launched the Kickstarter campaign for Bakeys two months ago with a goal of $20,000. 30 days later, she had raised close to $300,000 and her campaign was backed by 9,293 people (including Pete). We find out how she did it and – perhaps more importantly – how it’s possible to eat soup with an edible spoon. Show notes are on crowdsceneshow.com. Larry Battson is a nationally known educator on wildlife. He has traveled around the country for the last 30 years studying alleged sightings. Eventhough he faced the usual ridicule, he remained a believer. Larry's interest is in all wildlife and Bigfoot is another form of wildlife. Larry runs Wildlife Educational Services, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people.
