If you or someone you care about is having a tough time through this pandemic (and we have all gone through waves of highs and lows), this episode is sure to bring comfort. This is a conversation with Renee McGregor (@r_mcgregor) about how food continues to be a coping mechanism for many people as a way to get us through tough times. But most of all, she helps shed light on how we can develop healthier relationships with food. Renee is one of the leading Sports and Eating disorder specialist dietitians and has spent 20 years working in clinical and performance nutrition. While she’s a sports dietician, she focuses her work on eating disorders and helping people establish healthy relationships with food and training as well as mental health and female health. Renee has worked with sports teams in the 2012 London Olympics, 2016 Rio Paralympics, and Commonwealth (Queensland 2018). Renee is also an author and podcast co-host of Train Brave. “It's important to tune into your emotions and work out that they are trying to tell you something.” —Renee McGregor In this episode we cover… How we have been using and abusing food to help us get through tough times, especially COVID. [0.11:00] How we can change the way we talk to young adults, teenagers, and children when it comes to food to help them develop a healthy relationship to food. [25:50] The anxiety and depression happening for many right now, and how to be there for someone you love going through that (while also recognizing that it can have a huge impact on our mental health). [46:00] We talk about body image and perfectionism. [1:03:00] And much more. There is a reason this is Renee’s third time back on the podcast. I appreciate her advice and wisdom, and hope listeners do too. A polymath, commonly referred to as a Renaissance Man or Woman, is an individual that has an interest in a variety of fields and a level of expertise or professionalism in each of them. A few of the most well-known polymaths are Galileo, Benjamin Franklin, and Leonardo de Vinci. These individuals are often highly praised and revered because of their successes in a variety of fields. But what if their wide-ranging interests are the very reason for their accomplishments? David Epstein had this same question as it related to sports. Do the best athletes become the best because they specialize at an early age? Or do they become the best because they choose not to specialize? As his book suggests, is there a Sports Gene? Many of the top sports performers are highly competitive in several sports. Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, Serena Williams, Steve Nash and many more have showed levels of brilliance in multiple sports and likely could have topped the podiums in other sports had they chosen a different path. So, what does that mean for you and me? How should we approach the things we do? How should we raise our children to be? In a specialized world, should we be concerned over spreading ourselves too thin in a variety of interests? How effective is cross-training? Answers to these questions and more can be found on today’s Running for Real Episode. Join in! Sunk Cost Fallacy One of the surest ways to be great, is to do something that you can stand to do day in and day out. Many people call this “finding your passion” or “finding your life calling.” If you do what you love, it would make sense that you want to do it well and do it consistently. While it may not be necessary to discover your life calling in order to be happy and successful, it certainly doesn’t hurt. The single most deterring factor in doing those things you love is called the “Sunk Cost Fallacy.” When you begin down a certain career path and invest a lot of time or money into developing your talents in that field, it is difficult to justify changing directions. Those that practice medicine or law can come out of school with enough debt to last a lifetime and can’t even fathom changing careers because of that burden. This fallacy haunts us in a variety of ways in life. It stops some people from being able to choose a major in college at all. It tells us that we are too old to switch sports. It forces us to continue using our iPhone or Android even when we think we would like the other better. The truth is, you have a choice. You can change careers, music subscriptions, shoe brands, or sports. In fact, many of the studies show that as you choose to have variety, your chances of success skyrocket. Experiment with Yourself (Skill Stacking) David has become an expert at being a beginner. He was a walk-on college athlete that went on to set an 800m record, a student of astronomy and environmental science where he did research in the Arctic Circle, a two-time bestselling author, and a journalist for Sport’s Illustrated and ProPublica. Finding things that interest you is David’s passion. He is an advocate for Gap Years, career changes, and personal experiments. Finding things that interest you is important to your well-being, but just as important is the process of finding. Most people in today’s work force will switch jobs and careers several times, even if you stay within the same company. David suggest that each of us should practice skill stacking—the process of cognitively getting out of ruts of competence. The world is changing, and to keep up, we should perform many mini experiments with ourselves to find the things that interest us and bring us pleasure. This will teach us how to move on to a new job or solve a new problem, and we are sure to find golden eggs of interest along the way. Practice, not Theory David’s final advice is that “we learn who we are in practice, not in theory.” It isn’t enough to take a personality test and then follow the results. We need to get out there and just try things. Read a new type of book, try another sport, accept a new project at work, travel to a new city, eat a new type of food. As you experience more of life you will learn to enjoy the experience and are sure to find more things you love. Is it possible to manifest without taking action? Can you get too specific in manifesting? And why in the world do we talk ourselves out of manifesting our biggest dreams? In this episode, Lauren and I talk about manifestaction, what it is, how to do it, and what happens when life doesn’t go exactly as you planned. If you’ve ever had questions about manifesting and how or when to take action, this episode is for you. What is manifestaction? Manifesting is intentionally creating what you want to happen in life, but manifesting also needs to involve action. To manifest, be specific about what you want and then ask that it happen in the kindest, most gentle way possible. Have the vision -- get clear about what you want -- then act on it the best way you know how. Manifestation is not about “the thing” you want, but about the energy around it - your vibe and thinking. In my life, I asked how I could reach more women. Not long after that, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, which I saw as my way to reach more women. It’s important to remember that many good things come because of pain, suffering, and hardship. Why do we talk ourselves out of our dreams? We women can easily talk ourselves out of pursuing our dreams, especially those money-related dreams. Here are some tips in manifesting what you really want: It’s important to understand your motive behind your manifestation. You must know your “why.” When you struggle with understanding why you are so blessed when others aren’t, remember that you may be blessed with good things so you can bless others. Ask yourself what lies you’re telling yourself. Believe in yourself and then things will happen. Remember that negativity attract negativity. Ask yourself what’s going on in your life that’s making you feel negative. Make a promise to yourself not to worry. Instead, turn that worry into an action phrase, “Today, I’m going to …” Can we get too specific in our manifesting? Lauren wonders if as she’s manifesting for a new partner, if she’s being a strong woman or just being nit-picky. How can you tell the difference? Ask yourself, “What’s real vs. reel?” Manifest about how you want to feel when you’re with someone vs. the specific looks or job of that person. Manifest how you want your life to look when you’re with that person. Think about what qualities are most important to you. Final thoughts on manifestaction Manifesting may not take the form you thought. Listen when the universe answers, and pay attention to how the answer shows up.
