We know that humans can become addicted to drugs and alcohol, but can we actually become addicted to food? Today, we interview Dr. Vera Tarman, the author of "Food Junkies - A Recovery from Food Addiction" Dr. Tarman, is the medical director of Renascent, an addiction rehab centre in Toronto, and works with people struggling with a variety of substance addictions, including food. Evidence is mounting for the ways in which the brain responds to hyperpalatable food substances, such as food products that are high in sugar, fat and/or salt. Research is showing that these substances can trigger a brain response and cascade similar to drug addiction. The food industry however, often creates food with the intention of having it be addictive. We have always counselled people about learning to develop a positive relationship with food, but there may be a case of learning how to avoid certain food products that have these addictive food substances. Tune in to today's conversation with Dr. Vera Tarman to hear all about this controversial topic. Dr. Vera Tarman is the Medical Director of Renascent, one of Canada's largest treatment centers for substance abuse where she works as an addiction specialist. Dr. Tarman cites the statistic in her book, Food Junkies: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that by the year 2030, 84% of the U.S. population will be overweight and 42 % will be obese. After recovering from food addiction herself by maintaining a 100-lb weight loss for more than 12 years, Dr. Tarman is on the front lines in presenting the message about the problem of food addiction and recovery solutions through her work, her book, Food Junkies: Recovery From Food Addiction and her podcast Food Junkies. We discuss how sugar and processed foods can be addictive and contribute to the growing obesity crisis and are the “tobacco of the 70s”. Since the truth about food addiction has not been acknowledged and accepted, the food industry, insurance, and pharmaceutical industries continue to benefit financially without addressing in a meaningful way how addictive foods contribute to health issues today. The length of time it takes for people to withdraw from excess food, sugar, and trigger foods varies by individual but is typically three to four weeks. Dr. Vera Tarman is an instructor at the INFACT School https://infactschool.com/ and is an internationally renowned expert on sugar and food addiction and knows recovery is possible. #237 Everything is made of energy and has its own unique vibration, including you. Everything is in a constant state of receiving and radiating energy. The frequency of this energy falls on a spectrum from light to dark. Light energy is infinite, effortless, and rooted in love. Dark or shadow energy is dense and rooted in fear. As an electromagnetic being, you attract experiences and relationships that match your frequency. How do you know what frequency you are vibrating at? You may sense this energy by seeing colors or hearing sounds, or you may just know it. If you pause before you think, speak, or act, you can usually sense whether you're spurred by doubt, insecurity, control, or the need to be perfect or you're coming from a place of truth, creativity, love. You are in for a very powerful time as I am honored to have Spiritual Accelerator, expert energy clearer, and master tracker, Bonnie Serratore as our guest in this episode. She specializes in removing and clearing all unwanted foreign energy from all time and space which interfere with the expression of our Divine self. Bonnie will share how we can unravel our deepest emotional wounding and accelerate our personal growth. She will talk about the “New Paradigm”, the shift of energy and consciousness that our planet is transitioning into, which I'm sure you've been seeing when you look around the world. Never before, at least in our recorded history, has so much awareness, awakening, care and concern been so palpable. Bonnie will unwrap that and so much more for us. I hope it benefits you as much as it did me. Enjoy! Martha Peirce, MSEd., RP* -Educator, Trainer, Consultant -International Trauma Specialist (in the process) Martha spent the first fifteen years of her career teaching foods, nutrition, and quantity food service courses at the high school and college levels in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ontario, Canada. She began her own recovery from an eating disorder, food addiction, and alcoholism over thirty-five years ago. In time, after much healing and further professional development, she started a new career. For over 30 years she has worked as a counselor and psychotherapist in private practice specializing in the treatment of addictions (especially food addiction), eating disorders, trauma, and codependency. Long before there was science to back up the concept of food addiction, Martha noticed in her own healing journey and that of many of her clients, sensitivity to healthy foods and an individual's inability to eat certain healthy foods within moderation. This seemed comparable to the alcoholic's craving for alcohol and the “phenomenon of craving” hence the concept of “food addiction.” Her work was validated by that of Kay Sheppard's initial writing: Food Addiction: The Body Knows (www.kaysheppard.com). Martha had the opportunity to co-facilitate Recovery from Food Addiction workshops with Kay Sheppard early in her career. She receives ongoing supervision and training from Dr. Kate Hudgins, an internationally acclaimed expert in the area of treating trauma, addiction, and eating disorders. In recent years she has also had the opportunity to co-facilitate workshops with Dr. Kate Hudgins (www.therapeuticspiralmodel.com). From 2015 to 2019, Martha was honored to be a Senior Clinician and part of the Team that developed the 28-day in-patient and 5-day out-patient programs for the treatment of Food Addiction at Renascent (www.renascent.ca). It was discovered that the client was best served via the Team approach which included the Head Cook, Cooks, and the Dietician (Mary Bamford, RD) collaborating with Food Addiction Counsellors, and Martha, the Senior Clinician because of the complex nature of food addiction pathology and recovery process. During her affiliation with Renascent, she has been made aware of research that is now validating her grassroots personal and professional experience with food addiction treatment and recovery. Martha maintains her passion for her vocation and continues to maintain a full and rich private practice! *Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario In this Episode: Martha's personal story and AHA moment Her thoughts on specific food plans 12 Steps Codependency Residential Treatment Many take-aways The content of our show is educational only. This might help to explain why various plans work for some people and not others, or even for the same person at one time (and not at another time) - all about the progressive changing nature. Dr. Vera Tarman is the Medical Director for Renascent, one of Canada's largest drug and alcohol treatment centers. She spearheaded their new in AND out patient programs in food addiction. She is the author of Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction. Dr. Tarman is also in food addiction recovery herself , having maintained a 100 pound weight loss for over ten years. In this episode I talk with food addiction expert Dr Vera Tarman. Dr Tarman has been working in the field of addiction medicine since 1994 and has been the director of Renascent, an addiction treatment center in Toronto, Canada since 2006. Although she works full-time in all areas of addiction, her particular passion is helping people recover from food addiction. She is the author of the book, “Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction” now in its second edition. We cover a lot of ground in this episode including discussing eating behaviors on a spectrum from normal eating to different types of eating disorders. Then we talk about the similarities and differences between what Dr Tarman identifies as three distinct disease states: Obesity, Emotional Eating, and Chemical Addiction to food. We then focus-in on chemical addiction to food, specifically foods that are created in labs, are highly processed, and are specifically formulated to target the reward centers of our brains. When the reward center in our brain turns on our brain releases neurochemicals that results in thoughts and feelings of, “yes, that tastes especially good and when I eat it I feel, at least temporarily, better, happier, calmer, more fulfilled.’ This sounds great but what is so concerning are the false “promises” that come with highly processed foods and the price we pay is much higher than we realize, including what more and more evidence is showing to be the growing phenomena of chemical addiction to food. Discussed in this episode: Please Consider supporting the podcast at either Patreon or PayPal (THANKS!) Defining Normal Eating as best we can. Eating disorders of Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating. Obesity, Emotional eating, and Chemical addiction to food. What excess sugar does to the human body Dr Tarman’s personal story with food addiction. Gastro and Neuro hormones that are released in response to eating. The cycle of addiction. Bariatric surgery influence on gut and brain hormones. Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS). Dr Tarman’s “Your Sweet Enough- Sugar Free September Challenge” on Facebook. How to begin abstinence from sugar. Overeaters Anonymous support. Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous How to handle social situations when abstaining from sugar. A little history on why Binge Eating Disorder is in the DSM-5 but Food Addiction is not.
