Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘N' RollAt 34, Amanda Meredith had it all – A successful career, a home, a child, and everything that should have made her happy. She was also crazy in love; his name was Cage, and their love would become her first addiction—but not her last. Some would say that love destroyed her, but what she let ravage her mind, body, and soul had nothing to do with love and everything to do with a deep-seated need to destroy herself. With the prick of a needle and a shot of methamphetamine, she lost everything- her child, her career, and she lost Cage. Homeless and alone on the streets of Dallas, she became a statistic. A broken nobody that had hit the gutter and licked it. Her story is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, a true account of what a life lived without a true sense of self, without self-love, and addiction looks like.Addict Chick: Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘N' Roll is her heartbreak, her sorrow, and the story of how she fought like hell to save herself, with a little help from the Man above. In this memoir, one woman proves that no matter who you are or how far you have fallen, nobody is beyond redemption.AboutAmanda Meredith is a recovering drug addict whose foray into the twisted and dark world of chemical dependency will profoundly change the way you view the disease of addiction. She sees yoga as an earnest companion for growth that is both physical and mental, an invitation to openness, compassion, and mindfulness. “My primary intention,” Maria says, “is to help people learn to heal themselves.”In late childhood/early adulthood, Maria was plagued by addiction, body image issues, and broken relationships. These all experiences eventually led her to heal and transform mind, body, and soul. She experienced it as “alchemy,” left her corporate job, and went onto become a yoga teacher and studio owner. From her hometown of River Vale, she has taught happiness, global awareness, and joyful living for over 12 years.Maria has devoted her life to inspiring others to be themselves through spirituality. She believes yoga can be one of the most effective recovery tools that people can add to their quest for lasting sobriety. She knows this because she too has a recovery story. She can be found speaking at venues nationwide where proceeds go to various philanthropic organizations aimed at helping with addiction and recovery. Her motivation is simple: to bring awareness to mental health and addiction, and end the stigma around these topics so people will ask for help.Maria has extensive knowledge and education in health, wellness, fitness, anatomy and holistic nutrition. However, she believes that inner work is most rewarding. “My journey is pretty simple,” she says. “It is to help people accept themselves. To notice shortcomings that they may want to change. My mission is to break the stigma around mental illness and drug addiction and help people realize that deep salvation, healing, even a life of joy is possible! And sometimes, you have to start with something so strangely obvious you almost miss it, like a post on social media. I feel it is my responsibility as a human and as a yoga teacher to share the message that you can heal, in body mind and spirit.”When she is not in the yoga studio, you can usually find Maria walking her Chesapeake Bay Retriever, riding horses with her daughter, or spending time at home with her husband and two cats. Susan Marks, aka Nurse Susan, is passionate about the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. She is a medical cannabis patient. She has a progressive neurological movement disorder, and cannabis (high CBD, low THC) has allowed her to stop anti-seizure medication and the intolerable side effects. She is also a highly qualified healthcare professional, holding a nursing degree and several nursing certificates. She works with medical patients who want to include cannabis therapeutics in their health management program.During this fascinating conversation, Susan gives a history of the hemp plant as a product and cannabis as a medicine. We hear how political and financial motivations forced this highly valuable plant to become labeled a dangerous drug and eventually become placed as a Schedule I narcotic. The three criteria for a drug to be included in the federal list of Schedule I narcotics are:1. No medical benefit2. Addictive3. Very unsafe and dangerousDoes it meet these criteria? Nurse Susan believes it does not, listen in to hear why she feels this way. What is the difference between THC and CBD? Nurse Susan explains that basically, CBD works from the neck down and THC works from the neck up. However, she feels strongly that using the complete plant and portions of all the cannabinoids is the optimal way to treat a medical condition therapeutically.Does this mean you're going to get high? Not necessarily as this can be completely modulated and controlled. But, you need both. Why? Because the CBD diminishes the psychoactivity of THC and the THC boosts the effectiveness of the CBD.Why do different people experience different responses to cannabis? Two reasons, the product and the individual. When it comes to product, Susan says, "There's a lot of crap out there" and you have to make sure it is lab tested. And individuals need to start with a low dose, pay attention to the response, and adjust their protocol based upon that response."Know the product, know it's safe, and know how you respond."PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Cartels are now spraying cannabis with Fentanyl to make it highly addictive, BEWARE!What inspired Susan to become an advocate for medical cannabis? And what's the most badass thing she's ever done? Listen in to find out! Background and LInksSusan Marks, RN, BSN, PHN, is a cannabis nurse and a member of the American Cannabis Nurses Association.Susan educates and consults with clients on:- The endocannabinoid system and how cannabis works in their body and is specific to their disease or issue- How to select safe and reliable products- The dosing process- The risks and benefits of cannabis- Identifying drug interactions and avoiding unwanted side effects- Understanding that cannabis is a treatment within a continuum of care which involves interacting components and being able to integrate cannabis with the client's current treatment choices and lifestyle. With this knowledge, her clients can make informed decisions about their cannabis regimen.Nurse Susan states, “I am very grateful for this plant, and I'm committed to working with other patients who can benefit from cannabis therapy.”Susan works with patients with several medical conditions, visit her site for more details.Susan has received certification in the following subspecialties:- Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ)- Public Health Nurse (PHN)- Legal Nurse Consultant (LNCC)- Catastrophic Case Management and Life Care Planning- Susan was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honor Society. For more info, visit http://dearnursesusan.com/More info - http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy - The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/The Functional Psychology Pro - Natural Solutions to Mental Health: http://drteralyn.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly - http://crowflyrocks.com/

BackgroundOn this episode, I interview Paul Gilmartin, a stand-up comedian since 1987. He has been on several shows including a half-hour slot on Comedy Central's Presents show “Comedy Central Presents Paul Gilmartin.”In 1995 Paul began presenting the cooking and entertainment show on TBS “Dinner and a Movie”. DAAM stopped airing in 2011 and after suffering from severe depression Paul decided to air a podcast on that very subject.“The Mental Illness Happy Hour” began in 2011. A mental health awareness podcast where Paul interviews artists, audience members, listeners and mental health practitioners on mental health subjects, whilst at the same time adding a soupçon of his own comedic genius into the fray. To date, MIHH has been downloaded a staggering 22 million times and has been rated 5/5 on iTunes. As if this wasn't enough MIHH is frequently picked as Editor's Choice by Apple Podcast staff and in 2016 was chosen by Esquire Magazine as that year's best podcast. It has also featured in the PBS documentary “A State of Mind”.Early To BedTune in to hear about Pauls habit of getting up at around noon. He shares that it's perfectly normal for comedians because of late shows and comedians having more to worry about than what time they get up, like, is there an echo in the room that they are about to perform in? Or is the mic on? This, he says, “is the real stress and can be the difference in the career you have, rather than the career you want. Getting laid and getting paid are the two most important parts of being a comedian. If you're funny then well, the ladies will think you're attractive, right?”Paul remembers that he was always funny as a kid but this was more a case of having to be rather than wanting to be. It was more a case of validation, of feeling special. You want to be validated and experience pleasure.InspirationListen in to learn how Paul comes up with his material and the process he follows thereafter. It's different for everyone, according to Paul. “When you first start out you are a nobody. You have no experience whatsoever so you think of things that are going to be the most effective on stage.”Nasty HabitsJoin in to hear Paul share a shockingly dark similarity among most comedians. He reflects that some comedians are a complete disaster offstage but onstage are hilarious geniuses. For others, it is vice versa.Paul shares a disturbing statistic about comedians and the destructive efforts they make to be funny. Paul shares that he has seen some brilliant comedians that just never achieved the success they could have, because of their own self-destruction or addiction. You call that Funny?Paul enlightens us about the side of the comedy world that we don't see. The questions, doubts and constant comparisons comedians indulge in. We learn that comedians are actually perfectionists- always looking to perfect their gigs.Tune in as we cover interesting examples like Chris Tucker and his work.“A greater writer analyzes the comedy, sees it as a philosophy; a way of life, Anyone can write but to write great comedy you have to analyze it and look into its being, its soul.” Deep words from Paul.Move AlongWe learn that Paul's decision to move from “Dinner and a Movie” to “Mental Illness Happy Hour” wasn't his to make. He shares the dark journey of depression, medication and suicide that directed him to his podcast. Join in to hear about his intentions and goals for the podcast that will touch your heart.Paul aims to connect with his guests. Episodes need that vulnerability element. No RegretsThis episode will show you how something as simple as a podcast and helping other people, can positively impact a life. This is precisely what happened to Paul. You will want to hear first hand the huge inspiration his podcast provided to him to change his life for the better. He shares his lifestyle changes and the healthier choices he has gone on to make because of his podcast!AdvicePaul says that his two pieces of advice would be:Have compassion for others but not at the expense of compassion for yourself; andNothing degrades the quality of your life more than obsessing about the quality of your life.Check out the Mental Illness Happy Hour at http://mentalpod.com---More info - http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy - The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Treatment Services, Recovery/Sober Coaching & Intervention Training Academy: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly - http://crowflyrocks.com/

In his twenties and early thirties, Tom had developed a lifestyle that centered on alcohol and cocaine. Although he had stopped excessive drinking and drug use, a number of things happened in a short period of time which led him back to that lifestyle. He was wrongfully fired from a high-profile job in 2009 in a public and embarrassing manner. Then in January of 2010, when his colleague's 18-year-old son was paralyzed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident, he agreed to assist with her law practice for a year to allow her to take time to care for her son. Just months later, in March of 2010, his brother was similarly paralyzed from the neck down in a ski accident and he wound up becoming intimately involved in his daily care and rehabilitation in Maine. In June of the same year, his mother was diagnosed with throat cancer, which had Tom running back and forth to Albany to assist in taking his Mom to chemotherapy treatments and other doctor appointments.Taking on all of these new responsibilities, on top of running his own law firm, was extremely overwhelming. Given the utter lack of even minimal help from other family members in dealing with his brother's accident and other issues, Tom returned to his reliance on alcohol and drugs as a crutch to keep up with all of these demands. This resulted in Tom winding up at rehab in upstate New York in May of 2011. When he entered rehab he was 140 pounds, had bleeding gums from frequent cocaine use, cardiac and pulmonary problems from smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, and was near bankruptcy. There was no doubt Tom was a mess. When he left rehab one month later, Tom was 177 pounds with a muffin top, his gums were healing, and he faced the challenge of cleaning up the messes created in every aspect of his life.Nutrition, exercise and a regular twelve-step practice have helped Tom overcome these obstacles. In the last five years, he has rarely been sick; he set out to eat right and exercise every day and on August 1, 2015, Tom won a physique contest for men over 35.Tom has made all his financial amends and no longer has the specter of bankruptcy hanging over his head. He was certified as a personal trainer in sports nutrition and weight management, all while maintaining a thriving law practice. After two years of freedom from alcohol and drugs, Tom was able to give up cigarettes and nicotine. In 2013, Tom graduated from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition. He has been free of alcohol and drugs since May 11, 2011, and cigarettes and nicotine since September 27, 2013. Tom measures his success by the differences between the life he was living when I entered rehab and his life today. It seems like looking back on a different person and a different lifetime. Through the grace of God, and by utilizing the twelve-steps and tools in this book, Tom was able to achieve his goals of sobriety and overall health.Website: https://www.spiritualadrenaline.comsFacebook: https://facebook.com/SpiritualAdrenaline/Instagram: @Spiritual_AdrTwitter: @spiritualadrenYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZn-be9v4Qhi2QwAQOZI57AMore info – http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy – The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly – http://crowflyrocks.com/

Inspired by his love of nature and the spirit by which his late mother lived, a former MTV star and struggling artist, who now can't even pay rent, finds courage to try something new, stand-up comedy."We're simply three guys who wondered what if you could create an entire feature film using just an iPhone. No crew, no lighting, no makeup, just the camera and the assets we had before us. That's how we decided to focus the story on our actual lives and use ourselves and basically our entire lives as the sets and subject matter."Brian Drolet is originally from Queens, NY, and started his acting career in NY theaters as well as several MTV shows where he met Jordan Eubanks who is originally from North Carolina, the two became best friends and went on to both star on season one of MTV's The Hills as well as started producing independent films together. That is how they met Chris Livingston, an NYU Graduate Film School alumni, while making the indie feature Dumbbells, a comedy about a gym staff.Collaborating and operating in such a freeing medium we decided to take advantage of all the iPhone had to offer, and along with a Moondog anamorphic lens, an Osmo Mobile gimbal, and some lavaliere mics we set out to shoot a full feature not worried about big names or big budgets and instead focused on heart and story. For more information on Brian Drolet please visit http://www.briandrolet.comFor more information on Chris Livingston visit http://www.chrislivingstonproductions.comFor more information on Jordan Eubanks visit http://www.canvasassassins.comIMDB - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8499810/?ref_=nv_sr_1Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Be-Like-Trees-235939946956618/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/beliketrees/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/beliketreesfilmWebsite - https://www.beliketrees.com/Other - https://www.buzzfeed.com/bricesander/the-hills-dudes-nowMore info - http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy - The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly - http://crowflyrocks.com/

For this episode, I was able to talk with Annie Grace, author of the book This Naked Mind. Our fascinating and enlightening conversation reveals that Annie's book primarily addresses the subconscious beliefs most of us have around alcohol. After understanding and tackling these beliefs, you can make a more mindful choice and rely on less willpower when trying to control your drinking. We unpack what Annie means by "controlling drinking" and how it is a very individual thing, it means different things to different people. How did Annie go from two bottles of wine each day to complete abstinence? Find out what she means when she explains, "I stopped trying to stop drinking."I asked Annie what was it in her subconscious that was keeping her stuck? And how did she unlock this key theory to help her control her drinking? Listen in to hear how she discovered it really came down to three layers of belief; substance, society, and self. Her next book is called The Alcohol Experiment, a 30-day challenge that will help people find the answer to the big question, "Would my life be happier if I was drinking less?"BackgroundAnnie Grace is the author of This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life. Annie grew up in a one-room log cabin without running water or electricity outside of Aspen, Colorado. She discovered a passion for marketing and after graduating with a Masters of Science (Marketing) she dove into corporate life.At the age of 26, Annie was the youngest vice president in a multinational company, and her drinking career began in earnest. At 35, in a global C-level marketing role, she was responsible for marketing in 28 countries and drinking almost two bottles of wine a night.Knowing she needed a change but unwilling to submit to a life of deprivation and stigma, Annie set out to find a painless way to regain control. Annie no longer drinks and has never been happier. She left her executive role to write this book and share This Naked Mind with the world. In her free time, Annie loves to ski, travel (26 countries and counting), and enjoy her beautiful family. My guest is the celebrated musician, Jam Alker. After touring and playing in a successful rock band, the rockstar lifestyle eventually caught up to him. Once he found heroin, Jam put his guitar down for over a decade. Eventually, after he came to the conclusion that drugs weren't his problem, but only covering the real problem that was lying dormant, he started to make positive strides in the right direction. And his desire to play music came back.Since then he has released a solo album, Sophrosyne. He is involved in the recovery community and continues to speak about and teach the positive properties of music. This interview with Jam is a great introduction to the subject of music for recovery purposes, as well as the life of a man who is recovering despite the desperation of hitting rock-bottom many years ago. Listen along.A Musician FirstJam talks about how he was a musician first and foremost before he began to experiment with drugs. Music was a great outlet for expression; it did wonders for him. But as he states during the interview, “it worked until it didn't.”Growing up in his teens and wanting to devote his life to music, Jam had a limited understanding of what being a successful musician meant. Chasing the ‘rockstar' persona, he admits that his addiction was always present, it was just manifesting itself in different ways: through his ego, his anger, and so forth. To hear this segment in Jam's own words, tune in.Real Estate, Record Label, and Recording StudioJam started making a decent amount of money while he was a musician. He was involved in some real estate, a record label, and owned his own recording studio. In addition to his other pursuits, he was drinking and doing drugs; it was just a part of the lifestyle. It was normal. As he says, the only time quitting is ever possible is when things start to seem unmanageable. While you are touring in a rock band and are still functioning fine, the lifestyle seems sustainable during the day-by-day happenings. And then suddenly it catches up with you. Once the cash came in, his lifestyle of addiction and compulsion only continued. Eventually, though, the party had to stop.Trying To Fill The VoidHe was well on his way to become a millionaire musician. He had performed in fronts of screaming fans. But the hole inside of him was still prominent and just as large as it had always been. He was miserable and turned to the one thing that he found could actually numb that misery: heroin. For more on the events that led to his turning to heroin, listen along. An Exemplar For The Recovering CommunityThere is pressure in being labeled as a musician who is in recovery; the community looks to Jam for additional support and guidance. And although there can be pressure, Jam says he loves it because it keeps him focused and holds him to a standard. He is in the position to reach out to a lot of different people who are struggling with addiction and will keep pursuing those aims.Music is MedicineJam is involved with Music is Medicine, which is a non-profit that centers on showing the healing properties of music. Basically, the organization is focused on showing how music can become a part of an addict's recovery. Through benefit concerts with educational information, resources, and peer-to-peer recovery examples throughout, the musical events are a platform that brings everyone together through music. This platform is great because it is a way to deliver information to people that might otherwise have never gotten it. For more information listen along.Strategic Playlists For Positive TriggersJam talks about how during his work with recovering addicts, music is used to frame the mindsets of those who might be triggered to take drugs again. Because music can be so powerful and elicit emotional responses like empathy, understanding, and so forth, the playlists that are made can be strategic tools used to keep recovering addicts on the right path. The moment they start to stray, the music can bring them back. For more, listen along!Recovery UnpluggedJam talks about his involvement with the organization and just how important experiential therapy is through the immersion of music. He reminds listeners not to ask “why the addiction?” But instead, to ask, “why the underlying pain?” For more on this powerful interview, tune in. My guest Chellie Campbell has helped countless people with her Financial Stress Reduction® Workshops and is the best-selling author of The Wealthy Spirit, Zero to Zillionaire, and From Worry to Wealthy. In addition to her game-changing contributions to the financial industry, she is a past president of the Los Angeles Chapter of NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) and was Los Angeles District SBA Women in Business Advocate. Chellie focuses on working with clients to provide a balance between taking a risk and being financially responsible; she promotes financial literacy for everyone. This is just the tip of the iceberg though; listen along and soak up everything she has to say. Her advice is invaluable. Not As Easy As You ThinkTo start, Chellie talks a little bit about how seemingly impossible writing a book seemed to her. Her clients had affirmed her ability to teach and convey considerable wisdom on financial matters, but they wanted her advice in book form. After struggling with the prospect of writing a book, she found the structure for The Wealthy Spirit that she wanted to utilize and did so with aplomb. The rest is best selling history.Positive AffirmationsChellie also states that for many people, the logical progression to financial success starts with the law of attraction and then the law of action. This means that positive thinking will ultimately spur the kinds of activities that are conducive to success. One wouldn't expect an interview to go well when one's mind has already determined a negative result. But there is also a limit to just how effective positive affirmations can be! Positive affirmations are very important to frame a successful action; but, as Chellie states, you can sit at a piano and make affirmations for hours--eventually, though, you will have to practice to get any good at playing.Send Out ShipsAnother key aspect of the episode is Chellie breaks down the importance of her famous saying: “send out ships.” Take positive actions in personal life and professional life. Don't just send emails, but instead, call clients. Reach out to people and put positivity out into the world. She also breaks down the historical meaning of the phrase. It comes from a 19th-century instance where London merchants would load up their ships with provisions and send them out on yearlong endeavors with no means for communication. It would take a while, but eventually, their ship would come in, treasure and all! And so, she tells her friends, colleagues, and clients that you must send out a lot of ships. Ultimately, you will reap the rewards. For much more, including poker, Chellie's new program coming in February, taking risks, and plenty of other useful tidbits, listen along. In this episode, guests Joe Turner and Stephen Swisher share their strategic approach to addiction treatment and recovery--one cup of coffee at a time. As the owner of Happy People Coffee Company (and a veteran coffee artisan to boot), Stephen Swisher teamed up with the founder of Recovery Champions, Joe Turner, to roll out their Recovery Coffee.Coffee TreatmentKnowing the copious amounts of coffee that are consumed at treatment centers during an average attendee's time spent in recovery, both Joe and Stephen knew they could make a difference by supplying high-quality coffee to each center. They also wanted to provide alternatives for recovering addicts who find themselves consuming sugary drinks and unhealthy foods after the 10:00 AM coffee cut-off time.Focus on NutritionIn addition to making the highest quality Recovery Coffee, they provide teas and sports drinks, as well as focus on nutrition and education to supplement the positive recovery habits they instill in participants. They really are making considerable strides in replacing the well-worn treatment center approach towards beverages and foods.Worth itAlso, you can taste the love and quality with each cup of Recovery Coffee: both of them understand the need for absolutes and things to look forward to during the difficult road to recovery. Waking up and finding adequate motivation to tackle the program work and stay focused on treating addiction is much easier when the day has been started with an excellent cuppa joe. And during the interview, it is said that weak coffee is one of weakest links in treatment centers around the nation.Recipe for SuccessAs Stephen Swisher states, most treatment centers offer weak coffee and then feed members high-carb, sugary foods. About 10:00 AM, most crash and want to go back to bed. That's hardly a recipe for success. And so, Stephen and Joe will continue to supply the proper fuel to help everyone looking to recover from his or her addictions. For much more, tune into this episode.
