In this week's episode Lance and Jacklyn teach listeners about chronotypes. What it is and how to determine your chronotype so that you can get the best sleep of your life. A through line in our episodes is learning more about what makes you you and how to thrive by living a life that caters to your specific strengths and tendencies.According to the sleepdoctor.com, chronotype dictates our body's natural tendency to fall asleep and wake up at a certain time of day. Our biological clock is influenced by the presence of bright light and more specifically, the production of melatonin. But not everybody falls asleep when the sun goes down—chronotypes are the explanation for some people tending to stay up till the sun rises and others nodding off on the couch before ever even making it to their bed.Your chronotype comes from the length of your PER3 gene and is dependent on genetic, environmental, and age-related factors. Your chronotype influences hormone levels, metabolic function, and body temperature, to name a few. Each Chronotype will reveal exactly what you need to do to work with your body, not against it.Want to learn your chronotype? To better understand your biological programming and discover which Chronotype best fits you, click Start Quiz in the link below and answer each of the questions to the best of your ability.https://thesleepdoctor.com/sleep-quizzes/chronotype-quiz/We also discuss ways to get the best sleep of your life. This is another episode of the podcast where I (Robbie Swale) share some of my thoughts. Like in episode 8, I'm going back to some content I previously created and sharing it again here as a podcast episode. As I listen back (sometimes for the first time), I also provideupdates, extra ideas and extra links as I go.The content I (re)share in this episode is what I created when I sat down to think about this question: what have I learned about the most important parts, aspects, shifts or stages that coaches almost always go through if they are going to create a sustainable, successful coaching business, whatever that means for them?So many of the ideas that have been most helpful for me in my journey are contained in this episode; in some ways these videos turned out to be a summary of what I had learned from the first three years of having transforming people's lives as my work.In particular, I talk about:Why you need commitment if you are going to create a coaching business in line with your integrity (and why confidence is a con). The power of the shift to embodying the belief that you can create your own coaching business and how to make that shift. The many, many, many ways that doing your own work is fundamental to life as a coach, including what counts as doing work on yourself.Within that there are so many little details and nuggets in here, including: why I think the Prosperous Coach has been such an important book for so many coaches; how we slip into feeling under threat in our coaching work and how to move back into a sense of trust; and why, confusingly, making a commitment frees you rather than trapping you. Oh, and I dictate two invitations that any coach can use to jump-start their coaching business when they need to. Tim Ferriss' Four Hour Body..or 4 Hour Body? Well, I went through a quick little, a little bit too little summary of the book though. I still believe that it's a very good book and worth reading. There are some really important ideas and tips in here! —————————————————————

No one believes that they can train themselves to not drink water, or drink significantly less than they should for any length of time. Why then do we think that sleep is somehow optional? We've read and heard about people who insisted they could train themselves to go without as much sleep as was always recommended. Best-selling author Tim Ferris, who wrote ‘The Four-Hour Work Week’ and ‘The Four Hour Body said the secret to sleep was not the amount but the quality of sleep that mattered. Sleep and consistent quality sleep is incredibly important. Sleep can even aid weight loss. But If anyone read the headline, ‘sleep more to lose weight’, they’d dismiss it because it’s counter-intuitive to say the least. Doesn’t more motion and activity burn calories? Here with the real answers is respected Houston based neurologist and founder of the Houston Healthcare Initiative CO-OP is Dr. Steven Goldstein.
Aggie's desperate to start a diet but is sticking to her guns, Bryan's reintroducing lentils to his diet after the trauma of the Four Hour Body, and Gwyneth is manspreading and renouncing her acting career in the New York Times. After a roundup of the "news" we discuss the week's newsletters. We talk about the endless GMO debate, astrology for self-acceptance, a $400 Tata Harper serum, how goop is good for female entrepreneurs, how Old Navy is saving feminism, a new way to breathe, and why French drugstore products are better than "natural" skincare.
We've all no doubt experienced times in life when we lose the resolve and resilience to carry on with good habits and positive practices. It can be as simple as falling out of the habit of going to the gym, meditating, carefully managing our money or giving our relationships the attention they deserve. When this happens, we have a choice whether to quickly acknowledge this, and pick up the good habits again, or to lament the fact, hating or judging ourselves and delaying getting back to the good habits. When this happens, we NEED to get back on the horse and pick up with the good habits again to see their effects in our life. Inspired by one of my recent blog posts (http://bit.ly/2VTzCdi) this episode explores what our reactions can be when we lose the good habits and how to approach picking them up again. I refer to my own experiences of losing the habit of going to the gym and looking after my health. I managed a solid 6 months of gym going in 2018 before losing the habit! I found the excellent book, the Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss which helped me to rediscover my resolve and to start looking after myself again, but it was only at the start of the new year when I started back at the gym in earnest. If your plans, habits and good intentions have been knocked off track, maybe this podcast will help you to restore your motivation and get back on the horse! Out walking, so you can hear the birds in the background. Haha. After seeing a hypnotherapist, getting some advice, I have also gone back to the Four Hour Body methods. But keeping it simple simple simple. So I’ve just listened to chapter 1 and made the first commitments that he said. And so far so good. Establishing a premium products brand is no easy task. The higher price point that is characteristic of premium products scares most brand builders away. They'd rather settle for a more affordable product that appeals to a broader audience. They believe that approach will generate more sales. But more sales are not what is most important when it comes to premium products. Product quality and a commitment to excellence are what sets them apart. Ryan's guest on this episode is Chris Ashenden, founder of Athletic Greens. In this conversation, he shares the journey from small startup to becoming a premium products brand that does things outside the realm of what's normal, on a number of levels. Why your product is the best possible marketing tool you have. When building a premium products brand, a commitment to producing the best product available is vital when it comes to marketing. It's not only about the number of eyeballs that see your advertisements nor is it only about getting big-name influencers to endorse your product. Your product itself sets a standard that is hard for the competition to reach, much less exceed. That in itself sets you up for higher pricing and a more loyal following in the end. Ryan digs deep into the journey of Athletic Greens with the company's founder, Chris Ashenden, on this episode of Freedom Fast Lane. Nutritional product sales using a subscription model: Unheard of but incredibly successful. Recurring monthly income is a gold mine when it comes to e-commerce. But it's not the typical way a product based business is able to operate. But the team at Athletic Greens has learned how to make it happen for their premium product green supplements. If you're at all curious how they were able to set up a subscription-based model that retains customers over the long term then you will want to hear this conversation between Ryan and the company's founder, Chris Ashenden. Chris thinks way outside the box and what he shares will challenge you to rethink what you know or think you know about product-based businesses. If what you're doing doesn't match your brand mission you need to stop it. As Chris and his team built the Athletic Greens brand they did all kinds of things to both learn who they were as a company and to figure out the best ways to market and sell their products. That is normal for most businesses but the unique thing about what happened in their journey is that though many of the things they tried were very profitable, they gave them up when they realized those things didn't match their brand mission. Initially they took a hit financially, but in the long run, those decisions served to move their brand forward like nothing else. Find out why Chris believes that brand consistency matters more than sales volume, on this episode of Freedom Fast Lane. Knowing and targeting your audience gives greater success than broad stroke marketing campaigns. Every company has to determine how it is going to go about marketing its products. Marketing is the lifeblood of customer acquisition and company profitability. But the common approach to marketing is not always the best. The Athletic Greens team determined that they were better off taking the time to discover the type of person who is most likely to use their products and then target them, and only them. On this episode founder Chris Ashenden describes the benefits they have seen from doing targeted, smaller marketing campaigns. Outline Of This Great Episode [0:22] Ryan's prediction about how much this episode is going to help you. [3:53] Why athletic greens has become so much more successful than its competition. [6:28] The impact influencers have and the most natural way to get their attention. [7:28] How and why Chris' team developed a subscription model for their products. [13:26] Carrying the momentum gained by a mention in The Four Hour Body. [17:27] How Athletic Greens approaches marketing and promotions. [21:15] How company growth did not translate into success. [24:00] Sticking to their guns when it comes to premium pricing. [28:58] Why the marketing approach Athletic Greens takes is slow but steady. [33:47] Advertising priorities: audience targeted, smaller campaigns. [38:09] Has being on Amazon changed the overall strategy of the business? [41:03] What it takes to follow up the first amazing, successful product. [43:50] Finding really great people to build one person's vision. Action Steps From This Episode FOR GETTING STARTED: Make sure you focus on two things: First, understand exactly who you are trying to reach. That's what will enable you to target your products to the people who will be willing to pay for it. Second, make your product state-of-the-art for whatever it is. Don't compromise quality for anything. FOR GREATER SUCCESS: Secondary products need to be a result of discovering what your existing customer base wants and needs. That enables you to build a quick-selling, market-tested sales process. Dear Jimmy and Doc Nally, Thank you for doing what you do. My life has changed thanks to this podcast. I have a quick question you guys: I recently got my Pathway Genomics results and the report said that my genes would benefit from a LOW FAT, higher carb diet. I have been keto for a year and I was shocked to see this. The report suggested my fats should be comprised of 20-25% of my diet, protein 20-25% and carbs 50-55%! I shuddered when I read this. It also said my body can process monounsaturated fats better than animal fats. What gives? Do my genes just not lend themselves to a keto diet? All the best, Esma KEY QUOTE: “If your low-carb ketogenic diet is working, why would you cheat and put your body through that?” – Jimmy Moore STUDY: Submitted by Dr. Dallas Peak, MD who was taken in by the use of the phrase “benign dietary ketosis” (BDK) to describe nutritional ketosis 1. Why did my symptoms of Raynaud’s syndrome seem to get worse when I started eating keto? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I went gluten free years ago and Paleo was the next natural step. I have had autoimmune issues my whole life and my doctors couldn’t figure it out. One of them once told me, "we usually only see these symptoms in overweight people", but overweight I am not. When first going Paleo, I made a drastic mistake without knowing it. The Paleo crowd was all about the bananas and potatoes back then so that's what I did. Even though I am not big fans of either of these they were the least offensive carbs and it seemed to help. A few months ago I decided to go with a ketogenic approach doing it the correct way this time. I still have fruit in the house for my kids but I have not touched it. I never had the low-carb flu and within a week was sleeping like a rock for the first time in years despite living the stressful life of being a single mom. Joint pain did not flare up as much and my migraines are not showing up as often. My question for you guys is this: I have always been plagued with Raynaud's syndrome. It lasts all year long, not just in the winter. I have noticed that since I do not feel hungry on a regular basis it is easy to go many hours without food while out running errands without noticing how long it has been. My Raynaud’s then rears it's ugly head and I feel it. I'm not sure if it's going too long on an empty stomach or something else happening, but the Raynaud's is the only thing that has gotten worse since I started eating keto. Do you know why this is happening? I am already taking a magnesium supplement to help. Even if you guys have no solution for me, I will just suck it up buttercup and deal with it as I have in the past because the benefits I am getting from nutritional ketosis far outweigh the cold hands and feet that I have always had to deal with anyway. Listening to Keto Talk, it is very clear to me that you guys have a goal of helping people and getting correct information out there. I am so glad I found your podcast. Thank you both for your time and effort and keep up the great work. Sarah 2. Why did I start experiencing very sore spots on my skin when I decided to cheat on my low-carb, ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I recently found your podcast and have greatly enjoyed getting caught up on all the episodes! I have a question that might actually be a new one for you as I haven’t heard it discussed on your show before. I have been eating low-carb, ketogenic with weekly cheat days as Tim Ferriss outlines in his book The Four-Hour Body. After about six months of doing this, I noticed I would wake up with very sore spots on my skin following a cheat day. It seemed to be concentrated on my torso and sometimes on my upper arms, neck, and scalp. This soreness was on the surface of the skin, not the muscles or joints. The best way I can describe it is it felt like a giant bruise that was only painful when you pressed on it. My skin would be so sensitive that I would skip running or other exercise that day because the mere bouncing of my skin was too uncomfortable to bear. The surface area of skin that would be sore seemed to correlate positively with how much crappy carbage I splurged on the previous day. Interestingly, the first areas to become sore were the areas in which I tend to store fat, such as the love handles, and the soreness would radiate out from there. If I had a really obscene cheat day, then even my upper leg skin would get sore. Very surprisingly, this phenomenon did not go away when I went back to the high-carb Standard American Diet for a period of time. It seemed anytime I indulged in something particularly sugary/carby, my skin got sore. This soreness would only subside after a day of eating low-carb keto again. So my questions for you guys is this: What could be causing this? Is it just a rapid-onset generalized edema resulting from a significant increase in carbs? Why did it not begin occurring until a good 6+ months into eating low-carb and why did it persist after I went back on a high-carb diet? Have I permanently altered how my body reacts to carbs by going low-carb for so long? Finally, should I be concerned about this? While trying to find answers to these questions online, I saw this “sore skin” phenomenon mentioned by a couple of people on low-carb diet forums who claimed they never experienced this before going low-carb. But none of these references included any explanations other than "possible edema". Thanks so much for your help and your wonderful podcast! CD JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS 3. Can Adderall be having an adverse effect on getting into ketosis? And does keto do anything to help improve adult ADHD? Dear Keto Talk hosts, I am a 62-year old female and have been moving to keto through the usual progression—it started 20 years ago trying to eat local and real food, then on to WAPF, then Paleo, and now low-carb, ketogenic consuming 20-40g carbohydrates daily. Most of my carbs come from salad, kefir, cheese, and kombucha. My blood sugars have been coming down but I am still in the high 90s for fasting blood sugar in the morning. I have only seen .5 once on the blood ketone meter. I am trying to figure out what might be preventing ketosis for me and I have a couple of suspects. Because I have some of the MTHFR family of variations, my doctor has me on 1000 mcg of L-methylfolate and adenosyl/hydroxy B12. I am also taking 10 mg daily of Adderall. Would any of these be having an adverse effect on getting into ketosis? And does ketosis have any positive effect on improving adult ADHD? I’d really love to get off of that medication if at all possible. Thanks for any insights you can provide. Stephanie KETO TALK MAILBOX - Why can’t I stay in ketosis eating what seems to be a well-formulated low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat, ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I listen to your Keto Talk podcast all the time and I have been doing keto for nearly 2 months. I am 6'7" and weigh 220 pounds with 16% body fat. I started keto for all the health benefits, energy, and disease prevention it provides. I eat about 100g protein, less than 20g carbs, and 200g of fat. This all seems right to me and I am being very strict with it. I get lots of sleep, am not stressed, and have experimented with exercising a little and not doing any exercise. There’s only one problem: I JUST CANT STAY IN KETOSIS! I bought a blood ketone monitor and the highest reading I have seen is 1.2 for a very short 2-day period and most of the time I am less than 0.5. Every morning I wake up I am 0.2 and then it’ll rise to 0.6 mid day and once in awhile I'll get to 0.8 in the evening or sometimes it goes the other way and I'll drop back down to 0.3. I eat bacon and eggs in the morning with coffee, MCT oil, and full fat whipping cream as well as high-fat meats and cheeses or cream cheeses for lunch and supper. The frustrating thing for me is my wife is getting 2.5-3.5 on the ketone meter eating the exact same thing I am. HELP! I hope you have an idea why I can't stay in ketosis. Growing up on a farm in rural Finland before exploring the entire planet, Tero has been fascinated by nature’s effect on the human body his whole life. He co-founded his company Four Sigmatic (formerly Four Sigma Foods) in 2012 with several Finnish friends and ever since then, he’s converted tons of people to mushroom lovers (including Four-Hour Body author Tim Ferriss). In this episode, Tero and I will go into the differences between the powerful adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms, how they work in the body and how they can help you get into the flow state. Make sure to check out the end of the episode where Tero shares his experience of a soundbath in the Californian countryside.

Its always been a funny thing to say to someone to "Take a cold shower," but it may be one of the best tips that you have ever been given. There are many benefits of taking a cold shower if you can handle it. I have been doing it for about three weeks now, and in addition to diet, have seen a pretty nice drop in body fat. I recently started reading the 4 Hour Body and have tried a bunch of the crazy experiments to see exactly how they work. I have found many positive results in my body and will continue to experiment and see exactly where this rabbit hole leads. Cold showers burn fat:this is initially what attracted me to them. In the 4 Hour Body, Tim Ferriss speaks about a massive increase in body fat burning. He started by looking at swimmers and why they can consume such a massive amount of calories and not go up in body fat. Their massive amount of swimming, 3-4 hours daily can contribute to this, but they still do not swim enough to burn the massive amount of calories, such as the 12,000 taken in by Michael Phelps a day. When looking at it, they found the high level of heat of the pool really magnified calorie burn, but to an extreme. So a NASA scientist, looking to make himself a bit skinnier and not willing to sit in a pool for 4 hours a day, checked out cold exposure and found that it burned more calories in significantly less time; 10-20 minutes. So Ferriss looked at this and started taking ice baths for 20 minutes a day, I'm totally not doing that because of the immense amount of pain it can potentially create. Then, there was a break through in types of fat that the human body carries. We have two types of fat in our bodies, white and brow. The brown fat is actually a fat that burns other fat, like the type in muscle milk, is stored in the back of your shoulders and activated by extreme cold or extreme heat. So, set your timer for ten minutes, clean yourself quick, then turn the water cold. Make sure to focus all of that shower on the back of your neck and upper shoulders and let the body fat burn! Cold showers boost workout recovery:Ever heard of pro athletes sitting in an ice bath for 20-30 minutes to recover faster? Well, not you can have most of those results in a significantly shorter and less painful time. Cold showers stop lactic acid build up as well as removing inflammation that may be starting in a muscle or the whole body for that matter. Cold showers can enhance mood:your heart rate increases from a cold shower and thus your body process speed up a bit. Therefore, they wake you up and make you feel a bit better by catching your groggy body up with the rest of the world. Cold showers enhance immunity:Remember since cold showers are speeding your metabolism, they are actually speeding up your total metabolic rate. With that comes a greater sense of wellness and a greater ability to fight off disease. You may think I'm bit crazy, but remember to put on a timer. Also, go back and reference the first reason: you only need to do it for ten minutes a day and it only needs to hit your neck and shoulders. Your body will actually really appreciate your new found sense of adventure. Now, go take a cold shower. I like the change of the calendar year. It's a convenient time to sit down and take an inventory of where things are and assess the plans for where things are going. 2014 was an awesome year. It was certainly one of the more challenging times of my life and was filled with change of all types. But it was awesome. 2015 will be transformative. This year, I'll be heavily focused on stepping up my game and making everything I do to be world class. I have plenty of goals. But for me, the end result of achieving a goal is less important than who I become on the way. Also, since there's no way for me to achieve a lofty goal without developing as a person, I tend to focus less on the goal or outcome and more on the plan of what I need to learn and who I need to become. In today's show I share with you some of my areas of focus for 2015 and some of the plans I have for my personal development. Here are three of my areas of focus for the coming year coupled with some of my action plans for development as an example with resources: I am a world-class business owner. In order to be a world-class business owner, I need to sharpen and hone my personal productivity skills. Nozbe Action: Complete their 10-part skills course and program training videos. Evernote Action: Work through Brett Kelly's Evernote Essentials Book again Gleeo Time Tracker and Alarm Every 15 Minutes Action: Add a careful review of my time usage to my weekly review. Look for items to delegate. Rescue Time Action: Check to see if it has been improved and if it will serve my needs. In order to be a world-class business owner, I need to strenthen my habits in these areas: Work from a list of prioritized importance. Plan each day's work in advance. Complete my weekly reviews, without exception. Complete my comprehensive monthly reviews, without exception. In order to be a world-class business owner, I need to establish new skills and a new comfort level with outsourcing and team building. I also need to focus on automation and systematization. Allison Reynolds is the guest on today's Real Fit Women podcast episode. We discuss how she has managed to improve her fitness and drop her body fat percentage even while having Multiple Sclerosis and having to deal with the effects of that. She used the philosophies from Tim Ferris's book The Four Hour Body to make her transformation happen. The main points I got from this chat were: - You need to make exercise a routine/habit - No matter which program or book you decide to follow, you need to make it your own - There's no need to over do it, just the minimum effective dose

Brian is the co-author of an epic textbook on training titled Power, Speed, Endurance , and the New York Times bestseller, Unbreakable Runner. As the founder of the CrossFit Endurance movement, Brian gained notoriety for challenging the dated conventional endurance wisdom of a mileage obsessed, “more is better” approach. Brian’s comprehensive program blending traditional aerobic mileage with varied forms of explosive strength training, flexibility/mobility work (he’s a close associate of MobilityWOD.com and Becoming a Supple Leopard author Dr. Kelly Starrett), breath work and recovery has busted the boundaries and barriers of the old school approach. Brian has occasionally faced challenges and controversy by those favoring status quo. Consider this salacious magazine article title from Outside magazine in 2013: “Brian MacKenzie's Controversial New Approach to Marathon Training: The mastermind behind CrossFit Endurance says the best way to train for a marathon is to run less and torture yourself more in the gym.” Well, it’s not nearly as simple and crude as the frequently referenced juxtaposition of “quantity versus quality” suggests. It’s now becoming clear that chronic cardio is not only ineffective but can also destroy your health. Furthermore, it’s also evident that endurance athletes are deficient in many areas of general fitness, especially preserving efficient technique as they become fatigued. If your low back and hip flexors get cooked at mile 20 of a marathon (because, for argument’s sake, that’s a butt-long way and you’ve perhaps never run further than that in training), some of the energy your cardiovascular machine is still able to produce for the final six-mile slog is wasted. Instead of maintaining a balanced center of gravity and generative efficient explosive force with each stride, you center of gravity caves and you collapse a bit into the ground on each stride. This is where the explosive training goes in. Loading a squat bar with weight, running sprints or performing any other explosive efforts is in many respects simulating what happens to your body at mile 20, but without having to exhaust yourself by running the first 20 miles in training before obtaining that desired breakthrough adaptation. Explosive work is not an endurance “hack” (you will never hear Brad use that word on this show or in life, ever). Rather, it’s adding a critically important training modality to your game in order to best prepare your body for daunting competitive challenges without falling apart. With Brian passionately advocating to expand our training consciousness, he has come off as an intense guy, which he is. After all, that’s him sprinting in Tim Ferriss’s epic Four Hour Body book trailer and his thumbnail image with his individual finger tattoos spelling “U-N-S-C-A-R-E-D.” What was cool in meeting Brian person was how thoughtful and chill he is. The conversation went off into the metaphysical and reflective direction instead of just going into his boiler plate PowerSpeedEndurance message. Brian starts by discussing the perspective he has gained from his recent terrible accident, surgery, and recovery process, gives a refreshingly expanded perspective of the dated and oversimplified quality versus quantity debate, countering the “more is better” mentality with the priceless maxim, “Better is Better.” Perhaps the best takeaway from the show is Brian’s emphasis that the next evolution in human performance will come in the area of recovery, and complementary practices such as breathing, cold therapy, and heat therapy, of which he is super focused on these days.
