In this episode of the Food Junkies podcast, Dr. Vera Tarman interviews Dr. Hala Lahlou, a leading obesity medicine physician based in Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Lahlou shares her journey into bariatric medicine, which began with her family medicine practice, where she noticed that many of her patients struggled with obesity and metabolic issues. This personal connection, along with her own experiences with obesity, motivated her to specialize in this field. Dr. Lahlou discusses the complex role of adipose tissue, explaining its function as an endocrine organ that plays a significant role in metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. She emphasizes that obesity is not merely a cosmetic issue but a serious health condition that can lead to various diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. The conversation also delves into the use of GLP-1 agonists and bariatric surgery as treatments for obesity. Dr. Lahlou explains that GLP-1 agonists, initially developed for diabetes treatment, are now being used to treat obesity because they help reduce food cravings and manage metabolic disorders. However, she also highlights the challenges, including side effects and the high cost of these medications. Dr. Lahlou also touches on the importance of screening for underlying conditions like ADHD, which can complicate weight management due to issues with impulse control and emotional regulation. She explains that ADHD, often underdiagnosed in obese patients, can contribute to food addiction and challenges in following structured weight loss plans. The episode concludes with Dr. Lahlou's thoughts on the future of obesity medicine, her focus on educating medical students and residents, and her hope for a more compassionate approach to treating obesity, recognizing it as a complex, multifaceted condition rather than a simple issue of willpower or discipline. Dr. Vera Tarman is the Medical Director of Renascent, one of Canada's largest treatment centers for substance abuse where she works as an addiction specialist. Dr. Tarman cites the statistic in her book, Food Junkies:  the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that by the year 2030, 84% of the U.S. population will be overweight and 42 % will be obese. After recovering from food addiction herself by maintaining a 100-lb weight loss for more than 12 years, Dr. Tarman is on the front lines in presenting the message about the problem of food addiction and recovery solutions through her work, her book, Food Junkies: Recovery From Food Addiction and her podcast Food Junkies. We discuss how sugar and processed foods can be addictive and contribute to the growing obesity crisis and are the “tobacco of the 70s”.  Since the truth about food addiction has not been acknowledged and accepted, the food industry, insurance, and pharmaceutical industries continue to benefit financially without addressing in a meaningful way how addictive foods contribute to health issues today. The length of time it takes for people to withdraw from excess food, sugar, and trigger foods varies by individual but is typically three to four weeks. Dr. Vera Tarman is an instructor at the INFACT School https://infactschool.com/ and is an internationally renowned expert on sugar and food addiction and knows recovery is possible. She goes into detail about subjective age, and explains that how we FEEL is actually more important than our chronological age. She also talks about important factors such as the concept of having "agency' over our lives, the critical component of building and maintaining muscle mass, as well as the social determinants that play a major role in how we age overtime. Aging well, as opposed to just living a "long life,"  is most likely everyone's concern, and this episode is wildly packed with information that can absolutely empower you. In addition to her professional expertise, she has her own food addiction recovery story and it includes having lost and kept off 100 pounds over 13 years. In this interview, we explore the topic of how trauma intersects with food addiction. Some camps say trauma causes addiction which implies or suggests that if we heal the trauma, our addiction can heal too or at least fade into the background. It is or was caused by the trauma. It is a trauma response.Others say, trauma and addiction are separate and distinct and may or may not co-occur. There is a correlation, not a causation relationship.Others say the root cause of addiction is not a biochemical brain glitch, nor a misguided attempt at self-regulation, but a spiritual crisis.Listen in as Dr. Tarman weighs in on the topic of how these different threads, these different perspectives on the root cause of addiction, come together into a cohesive narrative. She sees people coming into a residential setting, they're putting down their alcohol, cocaine, cigarettes, and marijuana. However, they start picking up the sugar. Within two or three weeks, they started to gain a lot of weight. Eating was very much like their previous behavior of addiction. Now, Dr. Vera loves to talk about the addiction that people have with food. Plus, she even wrote a book on the subject – Food Junkies. It's a fact-filled guide to coping with compulsive overeating problems. Get Food Junkies: https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Junkies-Recovery-Addiction/dp/1459741978/benazadi-20  [06:05] How Can Food Become Addictive? The inspiration for Food Junkies came from another book, Hooked. Hooked is about the troubling story of how food companies have exploited our most fundamental evolutionary instincts to get us hooked on processed foods. Get Hooked: https://www.amazon.ca/Hooked-Food-Giants-Exploit-Addictions/dp/0771059590/benazadi-20 The food industry has made our food addictive by targeting the chemistry in our brains. Sadly, the food industry has figured out that the reward pathway will keep people coming back for their food. Brilliant scientists are paid good money to figure out how to activate those pathways. [08:50] The Negative Impacts On Your Brain When Consuming Sugars Sugars will light up part of the brain that's emotional and impulsive. It's the part of our brain that makes us do things without thought - this is all subconscious thinking. Plus, sugar will trigger dopamine primarily, which is our neurochemical of desire. There's also endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins trigger comfort while serotonin triggers connectedness. Addiction will make you want an entire bag of chips. You can't stop at one or two because your neural biology is so damaged. The physical manifestations of sugar and high-carb addiction are happening in the brain. [17:00] What You Need To Know About The Different Stages of Food Addiction When we talk about food addiction, it's essentially like diabetes. Food addiction is a chronic and progressive condition. You may have a food addiction if you would rather stay at home and eat instead of going out for a social occasion. If you consistently do not feel well because of the food you eat, you may be suffering from food addiction. Another sign of food addiction is eating foods that you know are not going to make you feel good. If your obsession with food is excessive, then you are a food addict. Lastly, if you are in trouble with your health, then you may be a food addict. “You have to be very careful if you're moving down this path of food addiction.” -Dr. Vera [25:25] Fasting For People With Addictions To Food Cutting out sugar will be the first step for people who have an addiction to food. Sugar is the trigger – so, ditch the trigger! If you have a food addiction, be aware of pitfalls. If you have a history of starving yourself, then fasting may not be the right path. Fasting can be healing; however, it's a tool that can hurt you if you do not know how to use it. If it's done carefully, fasting can be great for the body. [30:40] Why Dr. Vera Is A Massive Fan Of Eating More Protein Vera isn't necessary a fan of protein. Instead, Dr. Vera is a fan of low-carb. Protein and fat will give the body satiety. Most likely, if you are low-carb, then you are eating higher protein. Vera says she doesn't have a problem with carbs as long as they are not processed. [32:15] It Takes Three To Four Weeks To Kick Your Sugar Addiction It takes about three of four weeks to quit an addiction fully. A connection with a daily coach or sponsor will be critical on your journey. So, find support from someone while kicking your addiction. He is the author of the 2017 best-selling book:  The Hungry Brain: Outsmarting the Instincts That make us Overeat. He has also designed a course-based body weight management program called the Ideal Weight Program.   One interesting aspect for us at Food Junkies is how Dr. Guyenet upholds the belief that it IS calories that matter the most when it comes to obesity (and NOT sugar specifically).  He does however add that it IS the addiction to trigger foods, such as sugar that leads to overeating the calories that then lead to obesity.   In this episode: Dr. Guyenet's personal and professional journey The Obesity Model Processed Foods and Hyper-Palatability Food/Sugar Addiction Volume eating Weight loss/diets Signature question   Find Dr. Guyenet: Website: https://www.stephanguyenet.com/ Book: The Hungry Brain Twitter The content of our show is educational only. She is the best-selling author of Body Image Remix: Embrace your body and unleash the fierce confident woman within and the creator of the flagship You, On Fire – an online group coaching program dedicated to helping people break out of the diet culture cage, get free from body shame and live life on their own terms so they can wear, say and do what they want. She is the host of Eat The Rules, a podcast dedicated to anti-dieting, body image, intersectional feminism, and empowering people to live life on their own terms, where she has interviewed leading body image and anti-diet experts and activists such as Isabel Foxen Duke, Virgie Tovar, Chrissy King, and Ragen Chastain. She has been featured in Refinery29, FabUplus Magazine, The Huffington Post, Beautiful Magazine, and featured on several chart-topping podcasts including, Food Psych, Listen to Your Body, and The F*ck It Diet Podcast. She lives in Vancouver, BC Canada with her husband and toddler son. On this episode of the Food Junkies podcast, we bring you Clarissa's BEST FRIEND from high school, Summer Innanen, to talk about all things body image, body neutrality, and healing from body dissatisfaction. Summer is the best-selling author of Body Image Remix, host of the podcast Eat The Rules, and creator of You, On Fire – an online group coaching program dedicated to helping people get free from body shame. She also co-runs the Body Image Coach Certification program helping anti-diet professionals learn to work with clients around body image.  Growing up, and in high school, Clarissa and Summer both had body image issues but Clarissa doesn't remember talking about it or sharing any deep conversations about what they thought of themselves. After high school, we both began an unhealthy and disordered relationship with food where we struggled with weight, diets, and the societal pressures to be thin. Even at their thinnest they still hated our bodies.  Today Summer shares her personal journey to body image recovery and healing. She shares how body image develops, how diet trauma affects us, perfectionism, why we are always comparing ourselves to others, and how we must let go of the relentless pursuit of thinness and free ourselves by rejecting the rules and reclaiming our power. How changing the way you feel about your body isn't actually about liking the way you look.  Clarissa and Summer have different stories of healing and recovery with food. While Clarissa's includes being abstinent from addictive foods, Summer's lead her to an intuitive eating approach where she stopped trying to makeover her plate and start making over what was going on inside her head. Just because we don't eat the same way doesn't mean we can't heal the same way when it comes to transforming the way we see ourselves and igniting our hope, our power, and shifting our outlook on life. So in this episode, we don't talk about the food, we talk about the thoughts and feelings about ourselves that often lead us to EAT THE DRUG FOODS to drown out the noise and numb out.  Follow Summer: Website Podcast: Eat the Rules Instagram: @summerinnanen Facebook Twitter The content of our show is educational only. Food addiction is a real thing, but it's not recognized in many healthcare, workplace, and school settings. It could be the number one reason why most people struggle to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.  In my conversation with Dr. Vera Tarman, food addiction expert and author of Food Junkies, we discuss the difference between food addiction and eating disorders, what happens neurochemically in the brain and why some people are more prone to addiction, and ways to recover to find food serenity.  About Dr. Vera Tarman:  Dr Vera Tarman has been working in the field of addiction medicine since 1994. She became accredited with the Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) in 2004. She has been the medical director of Renascent since 2006.  She is a regular contributor to the call-in TV show Living Clean, Living Well and was cohost on Addictions Unplugged, a community call-in show about addictions.  Although she has spoken on various issues in addiction, her special interest is in the area of food addiction. She is the author of Food Junkies: The Truth about Food Addiction. Dr Tarman has found working at Renascent extremely rewarding, mainly because of its support of an abstinence model of care and its acceptance that the spiritual, as well as medical and psychological dimensions are important for recovery. Dr Tarman and Renascent believe that good care involves treating addiction and fostering a lifelong recovery life plan based on community and peer support. Dr. Vera Tarman is the author of the book Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction. Her book (as well as the podcast Food Junkies) tackles the complex and often poorly understood issue of food addiction. It's so poignant because it's written from her own clinical experience with dozens of her patients who suffer from overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia. But Vera is also the person behind the white coat. In this episode, she tells her own touching personal story about her addiction to food, especially to sugar and flour. She talks about how it began and developed, and how she found peace from that "hornet's nest" of self-destructive addictive tendencies. Hers is a journey of discovery and self-acceptance, as a patient as much as a doctor. For people struggling with food addictions, finding health professionals who understand and recognize their condition remains a frustrating battle, even today. Thanks to her book, podcast and Facebook group, Dr. Vera Tarman continues to lead the way in research as well as giving practical strategies for people facing the complicated challenges of eating disorders and addictions.Find Dr. Tarman, her book, podcast and Facebook group here: https://www.addictionsunplugged.com/And if you're ready and motivated to break free from sugar for good, you can get all the support, encouragement and guidance you need when you join the After Sugar Club here.

She has educated thousands of people across the world and hopes to help all those struggling with food addiction. In this episode, Dr. Vera Tarman reveals how she found the connection between indulging cravings for "comfort food" and engaging in substance abuse. Yes, food can become addictive, and Dr. Vera explains how. Plus, we talk about how to know if you're addicted to food and what steps you can take to face that food addiction. It’s a fact-filled guide to coping with compulsive overeating problems. Overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia – Dr. Vera tackles the poorly understood issue of food addiction in her book. [08:50] The Negative Impacts On Your Brain When Consuming Sugars Sugars will light up part of the brain that’s emotional and impulsive. It’s the part of our brain that makes us do things without thought - this is all subconscious thinking. Plus, sugar will trigger dopamine primarily, which is our neurochemical of desire. There's also endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins trigger comfort while serotonin triggers connectedness. Addiction will make you want an entire bag of chips. You can’t stop at one or two because your neural biology is so damaged. Fasting can be healing; however, it’s a tool that can hurt you if you do not know how to use it. If it’s done carefully, fasting can be great for the body. [30:40] Why Dr. Vera Is A Massive Fan Of Eating More Protein Vera isn’t necessary a fan of protein. Instead, Dr. Vera is a fan of low-carb. Protein and fat will give the body satiety. Most likely, if you are low-carb, then you are eating higher protein. Vera says she doesn’t have a problem with carbs as long as they are not processed. [32:15] It Takes Three To Four Weeks To Kick Your Sugar Addiction It takes about three of four weeks to quit an addiction fully. A connection with a daily coach or sponsor will be critical on your journey. So, find support from someone while kicking your addiction. INGREDIENTS OF THE DAY:  None For today’s show, I continue digging into the subject of fast food restaurants by examining the worst of the worst, what I call “freaky fast foods.”  They have really become a phenomenon in recent years.  I will try to explore what that says about our society, and why that trend will probably continue into the near future. Is Sugar Addiction Real?  Catherine Gordon, the author of Sugar Freedom at sugarfreedom.com uses the 11 criteria from the Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition to illustrate how sugar and processed foods can qualify as addictive substances.  Using real life examples she shares how you can consider whenther you are dealing with a substance use disorder when it comes to food, and steps you can take to seek help. If we claim sugar addiction as a physiological reality, stigma is removed, and it is much easier to seek out a new way of eating that brings long therm relief from sugar cravings. Catherine recommends, "Food Junkies," By Vera Tarman M.D. 2nd. edition for further study.

When Krupa and Sid Panchal moved to St. Louis from Bombay, India, they craved the food of their homeland. There are a lot of great Indian restaurants in St. Louis but the Panchals were looking for the street food they loved. So Krupa started making it herself. It was a bit of a shift from her career as an optometrist but after watching a Food Network show on food trucks, she decided that was the next adventure. Bombay Food Junkies found success as a vegetarian and vegan food truck, filling a void in the city. They opened a kitchen and brick and mortar restaurant in St. Ann but now the Panchal's are ready for their next adventure. They will open a new restaurant featuring the same authentic, plant-based food at their restaurant in Creve Coeur. Krupa joined us on the Meet St. Louis podcast to talk about the food of her childhood, the growing vegan community and why she's ready to hit pause on the food truck.
