Cybersecurity failures are no longer just IT problems. They are legal, financial, and leadership failures. In this episode of Security Squawk, we break down how a ransomware attack on Ireland's Office of the Ombudsman delayed justice for citizens and what that incident reveals about preparedness, accountability, and real-world consequences of cyber risk. We start with the Ireland cyberattack that forced a key public watchdog agency to halt case processing for months. This was not a minor disruption. Systems were taken offline, legal action was required to prevent potential data leaks, and people relying on the system became collateral damage. The story highlights a hard truth. When cybersecurity fails, mission failure follows. Government or private sector, the outcome is the same. From there, we zoom out to the private sector where the warning signs are flashing red. New survey data shows cybersecurity litigation risk is rising faster than any other legal exposure for U.S. businesses. Corporate legal teams expect cyber and data privacy disputes to intensify, yet fewer of them feel prepared compared to last year. That gap tells us everything we need to know. Companies understand the risk is growing, but they are not investing or aligning fast enough to reduce it. We also examine the dangerous confidence gap in middle market firms. Nearly one in five experienced a cyber incident, yet almost all executives still believe their security posture is strong. Confidence without controls is not resilience. It is exposure. This disconnect raises serious questions about leadership accountability and how security decisions are being made at the executive level. The episode also dives into research showing that many top U.S. companies still fail basic cybersecurity hygiene. Reused passwords, outdated software, poor configuration, and unpatched systems remain common in 2025. These are not advanced threats. These are fundamentals. When organizations cannot execute the basics, the issue is not technical skill. It is culture, discipline, and leadership priority. We discuss the ongoing wave of data breaches affecting insurance, healthcare, and business services organizations, exposing millions of records. These incidents are proof that many companies remain reactive instead of proactive. Third-party risk, weak internal controls, and poor governance continue to amplify the damage. Finally, we tackle a growing blind spot. AI security governance. As businesses rapidly adopt AI tools, many still lack formal rules, oversight, or risk frameworks. Without governance, innovation turns into liability. Attackers move faster than policy, and organizations are left exposed. This episode is a wake-up call for business leaders, MSPs, IT professionals, and security decision-makers. Cybersecurity is no longer about compliance checklists or technology spend. It is about reducing real risk, protecting trust, and leading responsibly. If you want to understand why cyberattacks now lead to lawsuits, why confidence is not the same as security, and why leadership decisions matter more than ever, this episode delivers the insight you need. What if your podcast could be reused and resold without you ever knowing? One of today's leading stories looks at a new tool that strips ads from episodes and resells ad-free versions without creators' permission. The conversation raises uncomfortable questions about podcast ownership, revenue loss, and what happens when third parties repackage your work outside the systems you rely on. We talk through how this kind of reuse could affect host-read ads and even listener trust. That discussion sets the tone for a wider news and commentary conversation about what's happening across podcasting right now. We walk through several updates across podcasting, ads, listening behavior, and creator tools, including shifting at-home listening habits. The Controversial Truth1. The Crisis of FaithFor 50 years, Mother Teresa secretly struggled with a loss of connection to God, describing feelings of abandonment in private writings ("The Saint of Calcutta").She confessed to experiencing "the presence of the devil" five years before her death—yet publicly upheld an image of unwavering faith.2. Questionable Medical PracticesMultiple reports (including from volunteers like Hemley Gonzalez and journalist Donald Macintyre) reveal:Reused, unsterilized needles and contaminated water (justifying it as "God's will").No trained medical staff in her hospices, despite $30M/year in donations.Filthy conditions: Urine/feces-soaked laundry washed next to eating utensils.Refusal to improve care: Volunteers offering boilers or supplies were told "Jesus doesn't want that."3. Exploitation of Suffering?Critics (like atheist Christopher Hitchens) argue:She romanticized pain as "piety," denying painkillers to the dying.Focused on baptizing the terminally ill (often without consent) over alleviating suffering.Tied patients like animals: Reports describe children tethered to beds, a woman bound to a tree, and volunteers laughing at their distress.4. The "Miracle" ControversyHer first canonization "miracle" (a cancer cure) was debunked as the result of medical treatment.Funding priorities: Despite massive donations, facilities remained squalid—fueling accusations of performative charity.5. Legacy: Compassion or Cult?Pro: She drew global attention to the poor and inspired humanitarian work.Con: Evidence suggests her missions prioritized Catholic dogma over genuine care, with volunteers "intoxicated by the myth" (Macintyre).Key SourcesDocumentary: Hell's Angel: Mother Teresa of Calcutta (Chatterjee, 1994)Investigations: The Washington Post, New StatesmanVolunteer testimonies: Hemley Gonzalez, Donald MacintyreMy Video: Mother Teresa: Saint or Sinner https://youtu.be/p1j41iIRCsoMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast4/Mother-Teresa-Saint-or-Sinner.mp3For sources on the claims & quotes:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OZtJUEXykEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEaKXRJ4NB4https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/02/25/why-to-many-critics-mother-teresa-is-still-no-saint/https://www.newstatesman.com/long-reads/2005/08/squalid-truth-behind-legacy-mother-teresahttps://edition.cnn.com/2016/08/31/asia/mother-teresa-controversies/index.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/1995/02/08/movies/critic-s-notebook-a-skeptical-look-at-mother-teresa.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/1996/01/14/books/books-in-brief-nonfiction-068195.htmlhttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/mother-teresa-s-canonization-controversy-clouds-nun-s-work-n641181https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/icon-of-the-poor-leaves-legacy-of-controversy-1.105892

It's time for another Mind Gap Podcast! This week, Doug and Justin debate about which fictional character they'd like to swap lives with for one day. Justin asks Doug's opinion on another gym experience he recently had with a guy practicing his handstands on the dip bars. Then, using the example of the recent SNL 50th anniversary show, the dorks talk about how weird it would be to get invited to a milestone celebration for a job that let you go and how this only could make sense in the entertainment industry. The guys then discuss how the Brighton Half Marathon started reusing cups for the runners after running out too early in the race and how…well, that's just gross. Things are wrapped up with another round of the movie clip guessing game, where Doug plays clips from different movies and Justin does his best to guess which films they're from. Let's talk about nests. Every spring, robins build their cup-shaped nests using grass and mud. Orioles weave a hanging sack. It's hard work, and yet once the chicks fledge, the structures probably won't be reused. But bigger birds, such as herons, hawks, and eagles, often reuse a nest for many years. Europe's migratory White Storks — like those pictured here — get the award for best reuse. One nest site, still used in 1930 and likely seeing many repairs, dated back to 1549. That's a continuous series of stork pairs nesting in one spot for 381 years!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. On todays show:THINGS YOU SHOULD DO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TO BE HAPPIER ALL DAY:❑ Pick a wellness habit, and link it to one of your morning rituals: It could be meditation, deep breathing, reading, or exercise. Perhaps add the deep-breathing thing to the time you spend making the bed after your shower. ❑ Get your phone out of your room: You've heard this before. No screen time in your room. If you reach for the phone or other device first thing, you're letting the outside world dictate your mood for the day.❑ Talk to yourself: Self-talk can be very conducive to helping you overcome whatever obstacles you face in the coming day. It's even better if you use your own name out loud. ❑ Talk to someone else: Make a social contact with somebody you like. This could be a spouse or child, a friend, an extended family member, almost anyone. A call or a text will work, but meeting for coffee will give you a big boost to start your day. ❑ Incorporate gratitude: People who journal about the things they're thankful for have been shown to score much higher happiness scores those who kept track of things that irritate them. OLD CUSTOMS THAT ARE HARD TO IMAGINE TODAY:☞ A kid in a car without a child seat: It wasn't that long ago that this was legal. In France, for instance, child seats have only been mandatory since 1992. For Canada and the US, it was the 1980s.☞ Checking your cash before going out: Before bank cards, you wouldn't dream of leaving home without cash. Credit cards didn't become popular until the 1970s. In the 1980s, ATMs popped up everywhere.☞ Buying a newspaper every morning: In movies, we often see the commuter faithfully picking up the morning paper on the way to the office. Of course, the internet changed that.☞ Throwing away plastic bottles: Recycling hasn't always existed as we know it today. While plastic bottles are everywhere, we're increasingly aware of the need to recycle them.☞ Having a tooth pulled by your barber: That's precisely who pulled out damaged teeth after dental care instruments were invented in the 16th century.☞ Watching movies at specific times: Remember waiting for the exact time a movie would be shown on TV? And tough luck if you missed it! Thanks to streaming, the way we watch shows and movies has been transformed.☞ Corporal punishment at school: Not only do laws now prohibit it, society sees it as barbaric. Current teaching methods favor non-violent means of discipline.☞Smoking in restaurants: You knew this was coming. Smoking sections first appeared in in the 1990s (US). Eventually, smoking was banned in all public places, including restaurants.GERMINATING GERMS:While it's true that these days, it's hard to go anywhere without seeing hand sanitizer stations available, there are other, far more sinister sources of germs than doorknobs and handrails. In fact, scientists are warning of 7 common spots where bacteria are thriving. In fact, these areas, places you might never suspect are hotbeds for microbial life, are all germier than the average toilet seat, according to science…1. Smartphones: When did you properly clean yours last? They are likely a key source of bacteria entering the body.2. Kitchen sponges: One study even found that the average kitchen sponge carries more bacterial species than a lab Petri dish.3. Water bottles: Reused water bottles can contain mold and bacteria, especially if they aren't washed thoroughly.4. Fountain soda water: The water lines from these things are usually teeming with bacteria, researchers say. That includes salmonella and E. coli.5. Handbags: Consider all the bacteria-laden items that get stored inside the bags, none of which are routinely cleaned.6. Self-checkout screens: They are touched by so many dirty fingers,...

Inspired by a question from friend and Patron Amy Payton, this week I cover the history of oak barrels. I go from animal skins in Mesopatamia to modern day barrels, talking about how winemakers decided that oak was the best vessel for wine. I answer her follow up questions too -- How are barrels obtained by winemakers? What happens to them after they are used and are oak barrels sustainable? I learned so much in this show and I thank Amy for the idea. ______________________________________________ Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. The Prime Minister is talking up the conversations had behind the scenes at Waitangi as he comes under fire for what he said publicly. Christopher Luxon used extracts from last year's speech, which he says he has no regrets for. He expects to do the same in the future such as his Anzac Day speech. Luxon told Mike Hosking that while in Northland, he had some good conversations on housing and water storage in the region. He says there was some pretty inspiring conversations about problems and then potential solutions. He's also standing by a statement criticising China. The joint statement by Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Defence Minister Judith Collins and their Australian counterparts criticised China for eroding freedoms in Hong Kong and the repression of the Uyghur people. The Chinese Embassy in Wellington says it strongly deplores and firmly opposes the statement. But Luxon told Hosking that he supports the statement. He says New Zealand's been consistent in its position both publicly and privately, and he thinks it's a good statement. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Architect Kirsty Maguire explains why reusing an existing building is always preferable to demolishing and rebuilding. However, when buildings are in terrible condition or need radical alterations to make them habitable we should be looking to reuse, recycle and reclaim as many materials as possible. Kirsty shows us that with intentional and sustainable design, you can create a new structure with a wealth of history. Check out the show notes for more information.

With so many companies offering API products, it can be hard to get your particular APIs discovered and used by the developers who need them most. You might have the best, most useful solutions out there, but if you're relying on the digital equivalent of foot traffic for discoverability, it might as well not exist. And if an API solution can't be found, then someone else is going to reinvent it. On this sponsored episode, we chat with SmartBear API Technical Evangelist Frank Kilcommins about the growing challenges of API visibility and how to outsmart the invisibility trap with the right development strategies and tools. Episode notes:Kilcommins suggests you can get better visibility for your APIs with SmartBear's new free API exploration tool. Open specifications like the Open API Initiative help make your endpoints easier to understand—both by humans and computers. Connect with Frank Kilcommins on Twitter and LinkedIn. Congrats to Stack Overflow user WorstCase, who asked five well-received questions on five separate days and earned themselves a shiny new Curious badge.
