Let's talk about nests. Every spring, robins build their cup-shaped nests using grass and mud. Orioles weave a hanging sack. It's hard work, and yet once the chicks fledge, the structures probably won't be reused. But bigger birds, such as herons, hawks, and eagles, often reuse a nest for many years. Europe's migratory White Storks — like those pictured here — get the award for best reuse. One nest site, still used in 1930 and likely seeing many repairs, dated back to 1549. That's a continuous series of stork pairs nesting in one spot for 381 years!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. On todays show:THINGS YOU SHOULD DO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TO BE HAPPIER ALL DAY:❑ Pick a wellness habit, and link it to one of your morning rituals: It could be meditation, deep breathing, reading, or exercise. Perhaps add the deep-breathing thing to the time you spend making the bed after your shower. ❑ Get your phone out of your room: You've heard this before. No screen time in your room. If you reach for the phone or other device first thing, you're letting the outside world dictate your mood for the day.❑ Talk to yourself: Self-talk can be very conducive to helping you overcome whatever obstacles you face in the coming day. It's even better if you use your own name out loud. ❑ Talk to someone else: Make a social contact with somebody you like. This could be a spouse or child, a friend, an extended family member, almost anyone. A call or a text will work, but meeting for coffee will give you a big boost to start your day. ❑ Incorporate gratitude: People who journal about the things they're thankful for have been shown to score much higher happiness scores those who kept track of things that irritate them. OLD CUSTOMS THAT ARE HARD TO IMAGINE TODAY:☞ A kid in a car without a child seat: It wasn't that long ago that this was legal. In France, for instance, child seats have only been mandatory since 1992. For Canada and the US, it was the 1980s.☞ Checking your cash before going out: Before bank cards, you wouldn't dream of leaving home without cash. Credit cards didn't become popular until the 1970s. In the 1980s, ATMs popped up everywhere.☞ Buying a newspaper every morning: In movies, we often see the commuter faithfully picking up the morning paper on the way to the office. Of course, the internet changed that.☞ Throwing away plastic bottles: Recycling hasn't always existed as we know it today. While plastic bottles are everywhere, we're increasingly aware of the need to recycle them.☞ Having a tooth pulled by your barber: That's precisely who pulled out damaged teeth after dental care instruments were invented in the 16th century.☞ Watching movies at specific times: Remember waiting for the exact time a movie would be shown on TV? And tough luck if you missed it! Thanks to streaming, the way we watch shows and movies has been transformed.☞ Corporal punishment at school: Not only do laws now prohibit it, society sees it as barbaric. Current teaching methods favor non-violent means of discipline.☞Smoking in restaurants: You knew this was coming. Smoking sections first appeared in in the 1990s (US). Eventually, smoking was banned in all public places, including restaurants.GERMINATING GERMS:While it's true that these days, it's hard to go anywhere without seeing hand sanitizer stations available, there are other, far more sinister sources of germs than doorknobs and handrails. In fact, scientists are warning of 7 common spots where bacteria are thriving. In fact, these areas, places you might never suspect are hotbeds for microbial life, are all germier than the average toilet seat, according to science…1. Smartphones: When did you properly clean yours last? They are likely a key source of bacteria entering the body.2. Kitchen sponges: One study even found that the average kitchen sponge carries more bacterial species than a lab Petri dish.3. Water bottles: Reused water bottles can contain mold and bacteria, especially if they aren't washed thoroughly.4. Fountain soda water: The water lines from these things are usually teeming with bacteria, researchers say. That includes salmonella and E. coli.5. Handbags: Consider all the bacteria-laden items that get stored inside the bags, none of which are routinely cleaned.6. Self-checkout screens: They are touched by so many dirty fingers,...

Inspired by a question from friend and Patron Amy Payton, this week I cover the history of oak barrels. I go from animal skins in Mesopatamia to modern day barrels, talking about how winemakers decided that oak was the best vessel for wine. I answer her follow up questions too -- How are barrels obtained by winemakers? What happens to them after they are used and are oak barrels sustainable? I learned so much in this show and I thank Amy for the idea. ______________________________________________ Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. The Prime Minister is talking up the conversations had behind the scenes at Waitangi as he comes under fire for what he said publicly. Christopher Luxon used extracts from last year's speech, which he says he has no regrets for. He expects to do the same in the future such as his Anzac Day speech. Luxon told Mike Hosking that while in Northland, he had some good conversations on housing and water storage in the region. He says there was some pretty inspiring conversations about problems and then potential solutions. He's also standing by a statement criticising China. The joint statement by Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Defence Minister Judith Collins and their Australian counterparts criticised China for eroding freedoms in Hong Kong and the repression of the Uyghur people. The Chinese Embassy in Wellington says it strongly deplores and firmly opposes the statement. But Luxon told Hosking that he supports the statement. He says New Zealand's been consistent in its position both publicly and privately, and he thinks it's a good statement. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Architect Kirsty Maguire explains why reusing an existing building is always preferable to demolishing and rebuilding. However, when buildings are in terrible condition or need radical alterations to make them habitable we should be looking to reuse, recycle and reclaim as many materials as possible. Kirsty shows us that with intentional and sustainable design, you can create a new structure with a wealth of history. Check out the show notes for more information.

With the growing popularity of disposable e-cigarettes, communities across the U.S. are confronting a new vaping problem: how to safely get rid of millions of small, battery-powered devices that are considered hazardous waste. For years, the debate surrounding vaping largely centered on its risks for high school and middle school students enticed by flavors like gummy bear, lemonade, and watermelon. But the recent shift toward e-cigarettes that can't be refilled has created a new environmental dilemma. These single-use devices containing nicotine, lithium, and other metals cannot be reused or recycled and, under federal environmental law, aren't supposed to go in the trash. U.S. teens and adults are buying roughly 12 million disposable vapes per month. With little federal guidance, local officials are finding their own ways to dispose of e-cigarettes collected from schools, colleges, vape shops, and other places. “So the destruction of vapes when it comes to destroying it, we classify it as a hazardous material. So an average barrel for us, which takes about 1200 vapes costs us about $1400 to destroy the product,” said New York Sheriff Anthony Miranda, who leads a task force on the issue. “The sheer volume of what's being sold right now or what we're finding on the streets is something that says that this is an alarming number,” Miranda said. Vaping critics say the industry has skirted responsibility for the environmental impact of its products, while federal regulators have failed to force changes that could make vaping components easier to recycle or less wasteful. Among the possible changes are: federal standards requiring that e-cigarettes be reusable or that manufacturers fund collection and recycling programs. New York, California, and several other states have so-called extended product responsibility laws for computers and other electronics. But those laws don't cover vaping products and there are no comparable federal requirements for any industry. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) tobacco chief, Brian King, said in a statement that his agency “will continue to carefully consider the potential environmental impacts” of vaping products. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

With so many companies offering API products, it can be hard to get your particular APIs discovered and used by the developers who need them most. You might have the best, most useful solutions out there, but if you're relying on the digital equivalent of foot traffic for discoverability, it might as well not exist. And if an API solution can't be found, then someone else is going to reinvent it. On this sponsored episode, we chat with SmartBear API Technical Evangelist Frank Kilcommins about the growing challenges of API visibility and how to outsmart the invisibility trap with the right development strategies and tools. Episode notes:Kilcommins suggests you can get better visibility for your APIs with SmartBear's new free API exploration tool. Open specifications like the Open API Initiative help make your endpoints easier to understand—both by humans and computers. Connect with Frank Kilcommins on Twitter and LinkedIn. The clothing we wear is a source of carbon emissions and landfill waste. Sarah Pinner, cofounder and CEO of Beni, introduces a new plugin for Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari browsers that helps shoppers find reused alternatives to new clothing. Beni makes thrift shopping easy with digital helping hand, and the team is working to add environmental impact information to make choosing the lowest-impact option simple. Reusing clothing is an important step to reducing our carbon and waste footprint. And, according to GlobalData, a research firm, reuse shopping has grown from almost no revenue in 2012 to $14 billion in 2021, it's projected that it will reach $51 billion by 2026. Shoppers need a guide to the exploding world of clothing reuse options. Sarah also shares her ideas about how to transform thrift clothing into a meaningful, hot topic to make more popular with all generations. The World Economic Forum reports that the fashion industry emits up to 10% of annual human emissions, though other estimates run as low as two percent. McKinsey & Co. says that less than one percent of the cotton produced annually is recycled and suggests that keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius requires we make clothes last longer and embrace reuse and rental programs. Reusing clothing is an important step to reducing our carbon and waste footprint. We've been testing the Beni plugin, which can understand what product you are looking at on an Ecommerce site and suggest reuse alternatives from other sites. Beni takes the shopper to the reuse site with a single click, keeping the original window open so it is easy to compare. You can learn more about Beni at https://www.joinbeni.com/
Reports suggest that the percentage of plastic packaging that is recyclable, reusable, or compostable increased for the third consecutive year, rising from 63.2% in 2019 to 65.4% in 2021. In other news, the environment ministry has green lighted commercialisation of the indigenously developed GM mustard that might eventually reduce the country's import bills for edible oils. You can listen to this show and other awesome shows on the IVM Podcasts app on Android, iOS or any other podcast app.You can check out our website at https://ivmpodcasts.com/.Do follow IVM Podcasts on social media. We are @IVMPodcasts on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram.Follow the show across platforms:Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Prime Music.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, we talk about a type of artifact called "Battlefield pickups." These are items, related to a specific battle, that were discarded by the participants, collected by the locals, and repurposed into some other tool or use by the locals scouring the aftermath of the battle for things they could use. This is a pretty rare genre of artifact, but we have several examples we have and will discuss. Please help us out by leaving a comment and sharing our show with others! Don't forget to Subscribe, Comment & leave us a rating and review. We also have a YouTube Channel "Chasing History" where we take you into the field with the men & women who discover history!

Metaphor in Illness Writing: Fight and Battle Reused (Edinburgh UP, 2022) argues that even when a metaphor appears problematic and limiting, it need not be dropped or dismissed. Metaphors are not inherently harmful or beneficial; instead, they can be used in unexpected and creative ways. This book analyses the illness writing of contemporary North American writers who reimagine and reappropriate the supposedly harmful metaphor 'illness is a fight' and shows how Susan Sontag, Audre Lorde, Anatole Broyard, David Foster Wallace and other writers turn the fight metaphor into a space of agency, resistance, self-knowledge and aesthetic pleasure. It joins a conversation in Medical Humanities about alternatives to the predominance of narrative and responds to the call for more metaphor literacy and metaphor competence. Wohlman has developed the vade mecum for Metaphor Method. You can find it here (in the right column). For the PDF file, click here. Anita Wohlmann is an associate professor in the Department for the Study of Culture at SDU. Victoria Oana Lupașcu is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature and Asian Studies at University of Montréal. The Aldrich Family, a popular radio teenage situation comedy (1939-1953), was also presented in films, television and comic books. In the radio series' well-remembered weekly opening exchange, awkward teen Henry's mother called, "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!", and he responded with a breaking adolescent voice, "Com-ing, Mother!". Henry Aldrich was an endearingly bumbling kid growing awkwardly into adolescence, and The Aldrich Family often revolved around Henry's misadventures with the girls and with his friends.Henry Aldrich was the creation of playwright Clifford Goldsmith. Aldrich began on Broadway as a minor character in Goldsmith's play What a Life. Produced and directed by George Abbott, The actor who brought Henry to life on stage was 20-year-old Ezra Stone, who was billed near the bottom as the 20th actor in the cast. Stone was also employed as the play's production assistant. When Rudy Vallee saw the play, he asked Goldsmith to adapt it into some sketches for his radio program, and this was followed in 1938 by a 39-week run of a sketch comedy series on The Kate Smith Hour with Stone continuing in the role of Henry. Kate Smith's director, Bob Welsh, is credited with the creation of the "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!" opening, which eventually became one of the most famous signature sounds in radio. After finding an audience with Kate Smith's listeners, The Aldrich Family was launched in its own series as a summer replacement program for Jack Benny in 1939 on NBC. The Aldriches survived its replacement status and ran from 1939 to 1944. After a brief hiatus, the show moved to CBS, running on Fridays from 1944 until 1946 with sponsors Grape Nuts and Jell-O before moving back to NBC from 1946 to 1951 on Thursdays and, then, as a sustaining program in its final run of September 21, 1952 to April 19, 1953 on Sundays.

She breaks down the key questions to ask yourself, with the most important one being: do YOU even like THEM? (Not the other way around!) But don't worry, Brooklynn has the recipe to get you off that emotional ledge- and more importantly get you what you want in dating. Your glass ceiling is about to be shattered. Let's go.
