The drivetrain hasn't seen a really significant evolution since the advent of index shifting in the 1980's. IMHO. Well, maybe the brake/shift lever combo - but really, not since then. More gears, electronic movements but the things still basically attach and work the same as the old Nuevo Records that our dads rode, mechanically speaking. So I went to the SRAM Eagle XX premier party at Mellow Johnny's in ATX with a bit of skepticism - and curiosity. Dang. It's different! OK - two jocky wheels, and the slant parallelogram are still there - but the UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) is completely different, the adjustments are basically gone, the setup is easy - and super super strong! I talked with product developer Jason Blodgett about the evolution of bike transmission systems! In 2019 Steve Cannon rolled across Knik Lake, an hour northwest of Anchorage Alaska, with more than a hundred others riding, skiing and on foot, down the Iditarod Trail. Leaving McGrath, more than 300-miles away, the 17 remaining would ride and walk deep into the unknown, pushing through fresh snow, across barren tundra, up melting rivers and across a frozen sea as they made their way the 1000-miles to Nome.

Upon his return home, Cannon sat down with Dave Mable to capture his experiences on film. This is his story of crossing Alaska by bike, from the shores of Knik Lake, to the edge of the Bering Sea. Welcome to the first episode of Bike Talk Shorts! (well, kinda... hey... it's my first short! I'll get better making the Shorts short!) - We begin with Kathi Merchant, Co-Director of the 2019 Iditarod Trail Invitational as she dives into a bit of the history of the race, the trail as well as some of the competitors (from Iowa... it was for a news piece in Des Moines). It's all pure Bering Sea gold! Secondly, we talk with Flori Reiterberger on the couch of the host home of the 350-mile checkpoint in McGrath, Alaska. It's a glimpse into what brings someone from the other side of the world to the middle of remote Alaska in the winter. It's also Bering Sea gold! Enjoy this treasure from deep inside one of the most difficult races on the planet. I also share a funny (sort of) story about Flori! In 2019 Steve Cannon embarked on a journey with a handful of other intrepid souls, to ride their bikes along the Iditarod Trail from near Anchorage, across the Alaska Range to Nome, a thousand miles away on the Bering Sea. Bike Talk with Dave's Dave Mable followed along to film a documentary about the journey. Once the two had returned home, Cannon and Mable sat down to record Cannon's experience, from his first fatbike ride all the way through Alaska to Nome. This is the first half of that recording - taking listeners from Cannon's first ride to the starting line of the Iditarod Trail Invitational on the frozen Knik Lake just outside of Anchorage. Tune in next week for Part 2 which will take us, with Cannon, from the starting shotgun blast through the Alaska Range all the way to the Bering Sea. Also, starting this week we'll be randomly dropping a new Bike Talk with Dave Feature: Bike Talk Shorts! Five-to-15-minute stories and interviews with incredible people doing incredible things - this week you'll meet Flori Reiterberger, a fat biker who was attempting his first Iditarod Trail race to Nome. Mark West has been fixing bikes for nearly 20 years and has been working in the trenches for some of the best domestic cyclocross teams and riders: Raleigh/Clement, Donnely, Cannondale/Cyclocross World and in 2022/2023, the Steve Tilford Foundation Cyclocross Team. He's worked with some of the best in the nation and world: Ben Berden, Jamey Driscoll, Gage Hecht, Lance Haidet, Clara Honsinger, Lizzy Gonsalus, Raylin Nuss and Curtis White. He was handing off bikes to both Gage Hecht and Curtis White when they won the U.S. National Cyclocross Championships. Most recently he spent a month in Belgian, supporting the Steve Tilford Foundation team during the Kerstperiod, two weeks of intense cyclocross racing in Europe. We caught up with West at the Des Moines' German Bier Haus - Hessen Haus - for a beer and to dive deep into West's experience wrenching in the mud for the best in the world. Gravel Locos: "The biggest race you've never heard of." Betsy Welch - VeloNews. Fabian Sarralta, who came to America from Cuba with his family when he was eight, started riding gravel events in 2016 and loved the challenge, camaraderie and acceptance of the sport so much he began hosting his own race only a few years later. His first event, in Hico, Texas, now attracts top pros from around the U.S., as well as around the world and is known for it's scenic (read: challenging) courses, unique awards, and grassroots feel. The race now encompasses two events, the second in Pueblo, Colorado, and both exemplify the grass-roots spirit of gravel. Brendan Quirk has a long history of cycling and in the cycling industry, founding one of the first online bicycling retailers: Competitive Cyclist. Since selling it he's worked as the President of Rapha North America, CEO of the bike brand Allied, has worked with the Waltons on the planning and development of mountain bike trails in OZ (Northwest Arkansas) and just prior to being hired to replace Rob DeMartini as CEO of USA Cycling, served on the USAC Board of Directors. In December of 2021 he replaced DeMartini at the helm of competitive cycling's U.S. governing body and recently announced the creation of a National Mountain Bike Training Center in Bentonville, Arkansas. In this hour, we discuss his history as a cyclist and road to becoming USAC's CEO as well as the creation of the National Mountain Bike Training Center, including it's staffing and program goals. This week, I've put together a double episode - Episode 53, which you might have just listened to, is a recent conversation with a bike packing fat biker who crafts his purpuse-built bikes at the University of Iowa Bike Lab. 12 years ago he started the bike building curriculem that we'll hear about in detail in this episode. I met our guest, Steve McGuire, In 2019 as he was riding the Iditarod Trail with his Friend Judd Rowler. I was intregued with his program, and wanted to include it in my film 1000 Miles to Nome. After we got home from Alaska I made the trip to Iowa City to hear about the program - so what you've got here is that conversation.Steve is quietly one of the most interesting and well traveled bike packers I know - and that program at the university of Iowa makes me want to go back for my masters! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, September 2. Thursday's weather will be mostly pleasant again, with some development toward rain on Friday. According to the National Weather Service, a partly cloudy sky will grow increasingly cloudy during the day Thursday in the Cedar Rapids area. The high temperature will be 84 degrees, with the temperature dropping to 59 degrees Thursday night. There will be a slight chance for rain late Thursday night, with the chance increasing into Friday. Iowa now updates its COVID-19 numbers weekly, and the state saw another big jump in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in the last week. According to state health data, 560 Iowans were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Wednesday night. This is another leap of about 100 more people hospitalized with the virus, the second straight week with an increase of this size and a continuation of an overall rapid spread of the disease since the highly contagious delta variant of the virus became the dominant strain in Iowa. To put this jump into perspective for Iowa trends, there have been more new people hospitalized for the virus in the last two weeks than there were hospitalized for the virus, in total, at the beginning of August. It is the highest number since the last peak began to recede late last year. Also of note, there were 8,308 new reported cases of COVID-19 across the state in the past week, the highest number of new reported cases since the beginning of the year. Representing the biggest majority, 22 percent of these new cases, were kids below the age of 17, many of whom are not yet eligible to be vaccinated. Meanwhile those experiencing serious symptoms, including hospitalization and death, are still mostly above the age of 40, according to state numbers. One positive note that ties these two negative trends together is that the vaccines are being shown to be largely effective at slowing COVID-19 down, at least at the moment. Nationally the vast majority of those hospitalized are not vaccinated, and the school population where the spike is being seen in Iowa at the moment is also a population that has largely not been vaccinated. The challenge is to either increase masking to slow down the spread or to get more people vaccinated. Or, ideally, both. Unfortunately, Iowa's government has made it illegal to mandate masking in schools, and the FDA has not approved vaccination for people below the age of 12. So we likely will be seeing the numbers continue to go up for a bit here. Speaking of Iowa's Government, according to the Associated Press, sixty Iowa Republican legislators are asking the Iowa Supreme Court to overturn a 2018 ruling that declared abortion a fundamental right under the state Constitution. Attorneys for conservative groups opposing abortion filed a brief with the court Monday on behalf of 22 senators and 38 House members, all Republicans. The groups include Arizona-based Alliance Defending Freedom and Iowa-based The Family Leader. In June 2020, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law a bill requiring a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can get an abortion. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland sued, and a judge struck the law down this June, citing the 2018 ruling. Iowa Republicans started a process to amend the constitution to remove the idea of a right to an abortion this past legislative session. But it will have to be passed again and then voted on by Iowa voters. The effort is part of an overall offensive by conservatives to not only overturn Roe V. Wade, but to establish a framework in the states that will prohibit abortion should that law fall. There was some concern for flooding in Northern Iowa this week after 10 to 15 inches of rain fell across north-central Iowa last week, causing the Turkey and Wapsipinicon rivers to swell The Turkey River at Elkader crested Monday at 22.79 feet — roughly 3 feet above major flood stage — but by Tuesday morning... These Iowa natives have decades of experience in agriculture and have seen first-hand the effects of un-sustainable agricultural practices on the landscape of Iowa. Listen as we discuss the importance of soil health, the problems and opportunities future farmers face, and ways we can improve agriculture for better food and environment. Bios: Bob Fassbinder and his wife Kathy have operated Fassbinder Apiaries near Elgin for the past 41 years. Bob graduated from Iowa State University with an engineering degree, but came out as one of Iowa's most innovative and passionate bee keepers. The Fassbinders tend 200 hives in the river valleys of northeast Iowa. Bob is very proactive at promoting both land stewardship and the need for a diverse and healthy landscape through his bees. They continually work toward improving the local genetic health of their bee colonies by selecting successful local colonies and producing their own queens. Daryl Landsgard grew up on a farm in Clayton County near Gunder. After obtaining a degree from Luther College in Decorah he returned to the farm and has been a life-long farmer ever since. Daryl is a very conservation minded producer and has been both planting trees and doing no-till on his farm for more than 20 years. He is also an avid hunter and angler which motivate him to also manage many parts of his farm in the best interest of diverse wildlife species. Paul Schlake is a lifelong farmer from Clayton County near St. Olaf. After Paul decided to quit milking cows, he and his fiancé Julie converted a manure storage pit into a hydroponic greenhouse called the “Red-Greenhouse.” They grow and locally market a variety of fresh flowers and seasonal vegetables.
