Derf Backderf - Kent State ShootingDerf Backderf, is an American cartoonist. He is most famous for his graphic novels, especially My Friend Dahmer, the international bestseller which won an Angoulême Prize, and earlier for his comic strip The City, which appeared in a number of alternative newspapers from 1990 to 2014. In 2006 Derf won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartooning. Backderf has been based in Cleveland, Ohio, for much of his career. On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard gunned down unarmed college students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University. In a deadly barrage of 67 shots, four students were killed and nine shot and wounded. It was the day America turned guns on its own children—a shocking event burned into our national memory. The fatal shootings triggered immediate and massive outrage on campuses around the country. More than four million students participated in organized walkouts at hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools, the largest student strike in the history of the United States at that time. It was a day that shocked the nation and helped turn the tide of public opinion against America's war in Vietnam.A few days prior, 10-year-old Derf Backderf saw those same guardsmen patrolling his nearby hometown, sent in by the governor to crush a trucker strike.Using the journalism skills he employed on My Friend Dahmer and Trashed, Backderf has conducted extensive interviews and research to explore the lives of these four young people and the events of those four days in May, when the country seemed on the brink of tearing apart. In this award-winning and powerful graphic novel, Derf Backderf takes us back to the age of the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon, Woodstock, and the Cold War and explores, in words and images, a scene of tragedy: the campus of Kent State University, where National Guard Troops attacked unarmed protestors and killed four students (Allison Beth Krause, age 19, Jeffrey Glenn Miller, age 20, Sandra Lee Scheuer, age 20, and William Knox Schroeder, age 19).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Frequently Asked Questions: Privacy, Security, and the State of Tech (Early 2025)1. What is "SparkCat" and why is it significant?SparkCat is malware discovered hiding in both the Apple App Store and Google Play. It uses optical character recognition (OCR) to scan users' photo galleries for cryptocurrency wallet recovery phrases and uploads them to attacker-controlled servers. Over 242,000 Android users downloaded infected apps. It highlights the evolving sophistication of malware and the need for increased vigilance, even with apps from reputable sources.2. What is the UK government asking Apple to do, and what are the potential implications? The UK government has reportedly ordered Apple to create a backdoor allowing access to encrypted cloud backups of users worldwide, through a technical capability notice under the Investigatory Powers Act. Apple is likely to discontinue its encrypted storage service in the UK rather than compromise user security globally. If Apple complies, it could set a dangerous precedent for other governments to demand similar access, undermining encryption and weakening security for everyone.3. What is the story about the man trying to buy a landfill, and what does it illustrate?A man is trying to buy a landfill to search for a hard drive containing his lost Bitcoin fortune. While seemingly absurd, it illustrates the very real consequences of poor digital asset management and data security. It highlights the permanence (and potential inaccessibility) of digital assets and the lengths people will go to recover them, even resorting to extreme measures.4. Why is the US considering banning the DeepSeek AI app?The US is considering banning the Chinese AI app DeepSeek due to concerns that it collects data for a foreign government (China). The app pumps data to China Mobile unencrypted, and there are close ties between the company and the Chinese military. This aligns with the US government's broader concerns about foreign-owned apps, especially those from China, posing national security risks due to data privacy and potential surveillance.5. What is the massive brute-force attack targeting VPNs, and how can organizations protect themselves?A large-scale brute-force attack is targeting VPN devices from companies like Palo Alto Networks, Ivanti, and SonicWall, utilizing nearly 2.8 million IP addresses. Attackers are attempting to guess usernames and passwords to gain unauthorized access. To protect edge devices, organizations should change default admin passwords to strong, unique ones, enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA), use allowlists of trusted IPs, and disable web admin interfaces if they are not needed, and also ensure VPN software is fully up to date.6. Why is Google's removal of its pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance significant?Google's removal of its pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance is a concerning development. It suggests a shift in the company's ethical stance and a willingness to potentially engage in activities that could have negative consequences for human rights and global security. It raises questions about the future direction of AI development and the role of tech companies in shaping its use.7. What is "enshittification" and how does it relate to current tech trends?"Enshittification" refers to the gradual decline of online services as they prioritize profits over user experience. This process involves platforms initially offering value to users, then shifting focus to business customers, and finally exploiting both for maximum profit. Examples include Twitter restricting API access, Facebook prioritizing sponsored content, smart TVs becoming data-hungry ad machines, and Google Assistant's diminishing functionality. It reflects a broader trend of tech companies sacrificing user experience for financial gain.
It's time to TRASH YOUR EX! This game is fun!
Episode 229If your seed phrase was in your photo gallery, congratulations! You might have just funded North Korea's next Missile launch. The UK government just asked Apple to make privacy optional—because nothing says "secure" like a government-mandated security hole.A man wants to buy an entire rubbish tip to find his lost Bitcoin hard drive—because sometimes, your financial future is literally garbage. The US is considering banning a Chinese AI app, proving once again that if it's cheap, efficient, foreign, unencrypted, and collects data for a foreign government it's probably too good to be true.Massive VPN Attack – 2.8 million IPs are trying to brute-force their way into VPNs—because apparently, resetting the default admin credentials to a "strong password" is still too much to ask.Google quietly removed its promise not to build AI for surveillance or weapons, so expect "Don't Be Evil" to disappear completely in a rev. or two.If your smart TV, social media, and AI assistants feel like they hate you, it's not paranoia—it's capitalism, or that other word we can't repeat here.Earth's Inner Core Is Changing – Scientists say the Earth's core might be slowing down, which is great, because the last thing we needed was more things spinning out of control.Let's go digging!Find the full transcript to this podcast here.

Paul told the Philippians that if anyone had reason to have confidence in the flesh based on commitment and dedication through various experiences and working diligently ... it would be him. But in spite of Paul's ability to boast—if he had chosen to do so—he counted it all as rubbish so that he may gain Christ. To gain Christ would be to attain righteousness ... not through the law or by his works ... but by *faith* in Jesus Christ so that he could *know Him* and the power of His resurrection. Nothing else mattered. And yet there were Jewish brethren who would eventually try to convince Paul to go back to the zealousness he once had for the law prior to his conversion ... and to proclaim a testimony publicly in front of other *believing* Jews that his rumored teachings were untrue and that he also was one who seeks to observe and keep the law of Moses. --Available on Amazon - "Clash of The Covenants: Escaping Religious Bondage Through the Grace Guarantee" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713ZSKY7

This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower and Natalie Orpett and Lawfare Contributing Editor Michel Paradis to talk about the week's biggest national security news stories, including:“A Justice Delayed Still Has Justice on the Mind.” After weeks of waiting, New York state court judge Justice Juan Merchan has finally become the first judge to apply the Supreme Court's Trump v. United States immunity decision, holding that incoming President Donald Trump's convictions under New York state law may stand and did not unduly rely on conduct for which he is immune. How persuasive is his ruling? And what can it tell us about the future of both Donald Trump's criminal case and the Supreme Court's immunity holding?“A Break in the Case.” Tectonic shifts in Syrian politics over the past few weeks that has led, among other consequences, to the release of thousands of former prisoners, have brought back to the fore the case of Austin Tice, an American journalist who has been missing in Syria for more than a decade. Believed to have been held by the Assad regime before its collapse, some are concerned that he might have been injured or killed during Israeli airstrikes over the past several weeks. What does Tice's case tell us about the challenges of wrongful detention cases like his? And what should we make of allegations that the Biden administration is not doing enough to bring him back?“Gym, Tan, Low-flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.” The state of New Jersey has a new signature activity, as Americans and politicians of all stripes have been voicing concern over reports of mysterious drones of unknown origins operating in the state's skies. What might explain this phenomenon? And what should we make of the reactions around it? For object lessons, Anna recommended “Intermezzo,” by Sally Rooney as a read over the holiday. Natalie Orpett endorsed Washington, D.C.'s Eastern Market as a worthwhile visit for holiday shopping, and Scott doubled down with another local recommendation of Middleburg, VA, as a holiday wonderland not to be missed. And Michel wrapped things up with a final endorsement of Weike Wang's dryly comedic book “Rental House,” for those needing to commiserate over managing family relations over the holiday. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Rich lodes of valuable metals lie on the seafloor. Will a global rush to mine them be allowed – and will doing so damage the world’s oceans? Synopsis: Every first and third Tuesday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Scattered across the sea bed are trillions of potato-sized lumps brimming with lucrative metals vital to making electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, smartphones and much more. This is sparking a “blue rush”, as some countries and companies are eager to cash-in on them. Yet the mining of polymetallic nodules remains banned and there are growing concerns that scooping them off the sea floor risks disrupting one of the most important, but still poorly understood, parts of the planet. In this episode, hosts Audrey Tan and David Fogarty speak with The Pew Charitable Trusts’ project director of ocean governance Julian Jackson on the risks. Highlights of conversation (click/tap above): 2:12 Three different types of deep sea mining 6:42 Environmental impacts of deep sea mining 12:21 Why countries are pushing for deep sea mining 14:58 Implication of Micronesian country Nauru announcing intention to start sea bed mining. 17:02 Is deep sea mining necessary? Heartless and disgusting is how police have described the trashing of a south Auckland pre-school. Over the weekend, someone broke into the Ōtara Community Pre-school and smashed the place up, breaking windows, destroying the microwave and tossing computers on the ground. Police say it is the kids who are now missing out, Counties Manukau East Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Rakana Cook spoke to Lisa Owen.
I remember sitting on my bed, reading through a box of old journals I had tucked away in the closet. At first, it was fun, remembering some of the friendships I had and experiences I had gone through. Laughing at some of my immature moments. But instead of storing them back in the closet, I dumped them all in a trash can. Have you ever done that? Back in episode 55, Elizabeth McCravy and I talked a bit about how there are times when you just need to throw your old journals away. And we're going to explore that a little more today. Because I've got to tell you, I don't have any of my journals except the ones from the past few years. Everything else, I threw away. Why? I'll share with you my reasons why and also help you discern if you need to throw yours away, too. Please note, throwing away your journals is not for everyone. It's actually not for most of you. But how do you know if and when it's time? I hope today's episode will help you determine that for yourself. We become what Ethan hates most - a Dramione podcast. We're all over the place on this one, and Kenna being trashed likely had something to do with it. Our bookish podcast is definitely still about books.
In this final episode, Mary offers personal reflections and parting thoughts. She reviews key points from the podcast and reaches a surprising conclusion: Perhaps, at its core, the NC debutante ball isn't really so much about the young women who debut. She also discusses the exclusivity of the debutante season as a symptom of larger economic barriers in the state. Rachel Hope Anderson offers guest comments on her experience as a non-debutante at Davidson College.Find out more:“Secret Sharing: Debutantes Coming out in the American South” by Cynthia LewisThe Season: A Social History of the Debutante by Kristen Richardson“Bloodlines, Ball Gowns, Trashed in the Hotel Room: Hegemonic Processes of Debutantes as Southern Royalty” by Anna Shelton-Ormond.
