In this episode of Cult Film School, Adrian and Dion overstay their welcome in Fairvale to soak in the ambience of the three Psycho sequels: Richard Franklin's Psycho II (1983), Anthony Perkin's Psycho III (1986), & Mick Garris's Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990). They discuss the different attempts at returning to the 1960 film, and the different ways the sequels remake and reimagine it. They also consider the many incarnations of Norman Bates while attempting to answer the question, ‘How many film references can one sequel have?' Slogging on through the Halloween movies, Two Nerds watched the most recent Halloween (which brings the count up to three whole ass movies titled Halloween), and its sequel, Halloween Kills. These two movies dispense with every single Halloween sequel so far, and are instead direct sequels to John Carpenter's original Halloween. Most importantly, these films jettison any familial connection between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, which was introduced in Halloween II, and was most decidedly not part of Halloween itself. Not including the Rob Zombie Halloween, these are probably the most competent Halloween movies to date, which -- and I know this is a bitchy thing to say -- isn't that high of a bar to clear.

Welcome to Talktober! That's right, and entire month of talking... on a podcast... wait wait wait, this theme kinda makes sense. For spooky season, we are breaking from the tradition of nearly every episode of this show, where talk about a singular film or franchise, instead opting to a topic presented by each host. If you like this format, please let us know. If not, please let us know. This week's topic is hosted by Jake, who asks, "which are better, reboots or remakes?" Now, when we write these episode descriptions, it's kinda tough. Imagine a book report, but instead of a teacher, you are writing it for Skynet from Terminator (i.e., the Google algorithm). Given the topic this week, we literally touched on over 50 films, and now we are left trying to include mention of them in this description, but crafted in a way that is not a generic list. Let's see if this works... The discussion defends the Friday the 13th (2009) reboot, but trashes the Nightmare on Elm St. remake. We kinda defend the Rob Zombie Halloween reboot and distinguish it from a remake. We take a hefty dump on the Let the Right One In remake. The 13 Ghosts reboot kicks ass. The Carrie remake does not. The Blob can kinda be a reboot or a remake; find out which we call it. The Hills Have Eyes has a remake, or is it a reboot? The Thing gets arguably the most successful reboot ever, but Psycho may have the worst remake. The Fly has a wicked reboot. The Omen has a dorky remake. The Child's Play reboot is amazing, shut up. The Grudge remake is butts. The Evil Dead (2013) reboot rules your behind. The Ring remake is caca. Evil Dead II is a reboot, right? My Bloody Valentine has a remake and it's not worth watching. Piranha 3D is a great way to revitalize a franchise. Willard is a rat-infested remake. Dawn of the Dead is a bombastic reboot, whereas both Night of the Living Dead remakes from 1990 & 3D 2006 are alright. I am Legend and Omega Man are different and thusly we have a reboot. No one gives Manhunter credit, but its remake, Red Dragon, is a masterclass. The Crazies is kinda bleh until its reboot. Quarantine is a lesser remake of Rec. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a super fun, vibrant reboot. Amityville Horror... sigh... is fine, but the sequels need to shut up. House of Wax/ House of Wax/ Tourist Trap are all movies. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot/ remake argument could go round and round like leatherface's chain. Black Christmas has shitty remakes that pretend to be reboots. Suspiria is great in both forms. Pet Sematary has a reboot. And then we talk about a bunch of other flicks, so just like... download this episode and let us word vomit inside of your noggin, bruh. Doug also interviews extreme videographer and director, Samhel. Find trailers for his films and links to buy them here: https://vimeo.com/user90082436 This week's "Hidden Track" is Runaway by Mercury Rising. Let's give this another go shall we? After penning what was actually an admittedly gnarly episode description to kick off 2001 A Space Augusty, it was all lost. Let's see Jake parody himself. *cracks fingers* This film is James Gunn's directorial debut, after writing for Troma with such films as Tromeo and Juliet and Terror Firmer, then Scooby Doo for Warner Bros. He went on to do Guardians of the Galaxy and after he was thoroughly swagger jacked by DC with their feeble Suicide Squad from 2016, he returns triumphantly to the house of Warner to grab that franchise by the ears and make mouth love to. The Suicide Squad comes out this week, fun coincidence. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) plays Bill Pardy and will be returning to work with Gunn as The Detachable Kid ("T.D.K."). Similarly, Michael Rooker, who plays Grant Grant in this, will be coming to the DC Extended Cinematic Universe as Savant. We talk about Elizabeth Banks' career, comedic chops, and how she may have played the part of Rita Repulsa, she did not look it, if you catch our meaning. We also talk Gunn's burgeoning directing style in this and how he stayed clear of troops by some of his collaborators like Zach Snyder, whom he penned Dawn of the Dead for. The effects in this film are stupendous and blend CGI and practical elements seamlessly. We talk about how the marketing materials failed the film in this regard, because the quality film you get is not depicted in the promotion. Did you know that James Gunn was in a band called The Icons? They do not appear on this soundtrack, but they did make it onto his sophomore film, Super. The music for the film was actually done by Tyler Bates, who has done everything from Tammy & The T-Rex to the John Wick trilogy. . . (yes, I am purposefully leaving out the Rob Zombie Halloween films). Last, we talk about all of the references to classic films such as The Thing and Big Trouble in little China with the Mayor, Jack MacReady, Tremors with the high school being named after Earl Bassat, Slugs, Shivers, The Brood, Night of the Creeps, Society, and even manga with Uzumaki by Junji Ito. This week's "Hidden Track" is Out Front by Life Force off their album, Hope And Defiance, on New Age Records. It features a vocal spot by Tim McMahon of Mouthpiece/Hands Tied/Search. They will be playing Promcore festival at The Vanguard in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 22nd and 23rd. Wow! Jerry Cantrell is on Talkin' Rock. Jonathon Davis from Korn hit the nail on the head between one of their songs when he called them "F'n Legends". I got the message that Jerry had a few minutes to talk the morning of the show. To say I was was stoked is an understatment. Jerry and I discuss lots of stuff. The tour with Korn and if he still likes touring. Robert DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots let me in on the AIC mascot, Larry (which you can follow at Larryaic). He tells me about the GNR tour, places they've played at that they never have and living the life of a rockstar. He tells me his thoughts on the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. We talk about some of his favorite riffs, the possibility of an un-plugged tour, solo album and what they have coming up.  In today's Rock News, Al Beck fills us in on the latest news about Tool, Flea and his auto-biography, a Rob Zombie Halloween exhibit and why Ozzy is going to outlast us all....it's science! This week on Slasher Radio, Bonez and Dismay go head to head with The Owl in a "Halloween" versus match! There's no denying that John Carpenter's "Halloween" is one of the greatest films of all time. Not to mention, it was done on an extremely limited budget in the 70's. Rob Zombie stepped in decades later to give his take on the monstrous killer and delivered an over-the-top version of the Carpenter classic. Do you dig the Rob Zombie remake? How do you think it holds up against John Carpenter's cult classic? We address all of this and MORE on Episode 69! Now that remakes are the new sequels, the boys tackle what movies should be reimagined (ever heard of Vally of Gwangi or Champions of Justice?), the direction giant monkey movies should be headed in, and what went wrong with the Rob Zombie Halloween remake.  There's also a couple of movies that maybe never should be remade.  Or maybe sooner or later they'll all get remade.  Who knows?
